Professor Arch. Ermanno Di Sandro:
When I recently met the Russian artist, naturalized Norwegian, Zoja Sperstad, figurative painter of international caliber, just in June 2022, I immediately realized that I was facing a great personality in the art world, a Woman with artistic ability -amazing compositions, full of creative resources, fertile experiences due to her experience and her philosophical studies as well as ethical and artistic reflections on the fate of the world.
I realized that Zoja has a vision of the world and of the universe that is difficult to grasp in its complexity and entirety, because I could fully consider her a champion in the fields that belong to the iconographic-expressive language, the latter capable of conveying with immediacy his world to the admired spectators who contemplate his works so beautiful, so extraordinary, so rich in light and colour, so profound…
When Zoja, an international artist, asked me to write this catalogue/essay on her life and work in the field of visual arts, highlighting her talents, her knowledge and - above all - her know-how, I realized that I would have entered a new world with mind and soul, that I would have plunged into an adventure whose implications I cannot see at the moment, but which I wish to imagine full of fertile international experiences, for which my life will also be linked to our common project of spreading a new artistic message, never investigated by anyone in such a complete and profound way - without any art critic, however good and competent, feeling mortified or, even worse, offended - as far as its inexhaustible resources and future prospects.
In many of his works we perceive a nascent symbolism with a strong personality, an evocative neo-symbolism with various stylistic contaminations and other artistic languages, the result of his many travels and his enormous culture also in the philosophical, historical, ethical, religious-orthodox, not least - even if marginally - in architecture and cinema.
Its symbolism is also linked to a vision of a fairy-tale type, certainly naturalistic, but of an uncontaminated naturalism that is difficult to find today except in Norway and in the other Scandinavian countries (Sweden, Finland), which, by its very nature, becomes ideal and aspiration to perfection and all-encompassing, unique, indisputable beauty.
In some works you can glimpse influences of oriental and Indian cultures, while in others you can see the languages and colors typical of German Expressionism and Edvard Munch, but also of the surrealism of Salvador Dalì which the painter claims to prefer as "elected among the elect of that movement.
His cultural project, oriented towards the salvation of the world through the cult of beauty, love and harmony, is in a constant evolution of languages, techniques, canvas dimensions and future installations, the latter made possible by a growing appreciation and recognition of his artistic talent.
