Doug ran into an emergency situation during a training dive.
There is a ton of footage from this day and Jared and Doug from the AWP team wanted to make sure this footage is used as a learning tool for divers around the world.

I really appreciate you guys going into depth on this video. I myself have the role of videographer on the team but with a background in lifeguarding i am naturally concerned about the safety of those in the water- before this video i have already been researching more information on dive technicals and safety and want to be able to react topside to the best of my ability. I was pleasantly surprised to see doug come in the screen at the end and am glad you guys were able to connect face to face. Although our team gets results we do not pretend to be experts in diving and are all eager to learn and perfect our skills. I am working on a “Dougs Redemption Dive” Bts from that 100 ft boat recovery with the DB. Hope you see improvements in Doug. He is fearless and although inspiring is nerve wrecking when i’m topside filming. -Josh p.s. your video shoutouts to me where hilarious. Glad i could ask the right questions.

Just try to keep your team safe man. This kind of stuff shouldn't happen in these uncontrollable environments. Practice makes perfect, practice in a lake at 100ft isn't practice at all. It's an accident or death waiting to happen. I appreciate you asking the right questions. I love you guys, and want to see you around more often for years to come. I don't want to see a video of a recovery of one of your team over lack of training. 👊

All the agencies offer both a CPR and a Emergency Oxygen provider course. You don't have to dive for those classes.
Being topside and ready to respond is a great thing.
I worked with a dive master who would stay topside and had a stopwatch for each diver/buddy team. So he could monitor on the serface an estimate of the dive plan.

Seems like AWP has had a whole lot of dangerous situations that luckily didn’t end with anyone hurt or dying, and that’s created a HUGE confirmation bias that the way they’re doing it is either the right way or good enough. The problem with confirmation bias in this situation is that when it’s disproven the results are almost always catastrophic. I really hope they can gain a bit of humility (and respect for their audience) and send their team through the proper certification classes. *More knowledge* when it comes to diving is never a bad thing.

I think Woody's being a little unfair. As long as Ebay sellers include manuals, new divers will be fine. It's why the expression 'sink or swim' entered common usage.
Ok, so I was cringing during the briefing. Waaay too many 'firsts' for a relatively novice diver. When I got my full-face mask, I read bunch of reviews first, talked to other divers, bought the mask, read the manual, and then did the certification. I'm still alive. I became confident with my new toy, my buddies know I'm less likely to become an emergency situation for them to deal with.
(Oh, and recommendation for some dubious diving.. Discovery's 'Blind Frog Ranch' show. It's an alternate-reality TV series that includes some cave diving.)

This is typical Jared, DIVERT when he knows he is wrong. Let's remember Jared has only been diving for 3yrs at this point. On short, not so deep diving, with the odd deep dive here and there. Not enough experience at all to be teaching. This is why friends don't teach friends how to dive. The fact that he doesn't even understand how not to silt up the area is telling.
Let me make it clear: Doug is mistaken or maybe confused about wither they had oxygen there. They may have it now, however they didn't have oxygen on that day - why I know this, I made a comment on that video regarding the fact that Doug should have been put on oxygen when he surfaced and why, and Jared had it deleted. Josh Cantu thanked me for the info, & confirmed that there was no oxygen, he said he would look into making sure that it was available for any deep dives thereafter. I even advised that they needed to be certified in administering oxygen to carry it.
No person in their right mind takes a new diver who already isn't Overly familiar with the gear, suddenly surprise him with a new set up on such a deep dive - it's ludicrous. Doug hasn't even been shown how to use the shearwater & AI.
No your gauge doesn't have to dangle and drag. I still dive with my shearwater & my console, with a dive gauge and secondary computer with compass. Not once have I ever done a dive where I am relying only on a computer telling me you need to do a safety stop. I already have my safety stops planned. Jared hasn't even explained to Doug how unbalanced that tank set up is going to be or how to use weights to counteract that unevenness when he is at Trim. This is also the reason why I'm not a fan of combined regulator and BCD inflator attachments. Jared should have done all the training and gear orientation in confined or shallower water, not at 100ft.
The camera didn't stop recording Jared had it cut and edited out.
JOSH ISN'T EVEN A DIVER & knows this isn't right. I also have a major issue with the fact that Jared had any comments from more experienced divers giving advise on what happened & what they should've done deleted and blocked those commenters - jared can't take critiques, criticisms, or redirection to better training resources.
I also call BS on 144 as jared doesn't know how to dive Nitrox or mixed gasses, he only dives air !!!!!
Jared had no business taking a newly certified diver to such depth. Doug is lucky to be alive.

I’m blown away by so many of these comments.. I wonder if Doug knows just how dangerous this was and how wreckless jared was doing this. @Jefferson-ly5qe 7 месяцев назад +7

I don't think Doug was totally straight about how much he didn't know either. He was hazy about his remaining air from the first time it was questioned. He also couldn't describe the rule of thirds or his relative air consumption at depth. I think he knows even less than he suggests which is a bit scary.

@@rebeccafantstegall1899 I believe that what hotmoon was referring to was the letter that Jared wrote in the video. Dive Talk invited Jared to come on to the show and discuss why it is important to have certifications and standards for teaching. Jared wrote a note back saying that he didn't really care that there were certifications he wasn't planning on getting them. In my honest opinion, Jared's letter contained the same tone that he condemned himself. He states that companies he has worked for contain a very ego-centric individual, yet in the same letter he brazenly states that he is going to do things his on way because "there are no dive police that are going to put us in scuba jail." I take that as he is openly flaunting that he will not follow any standards that have been set by the dive community because there is no one that can force him to do so. Basically he is saying that he is going to do whatever he wants simply because he can. While that is all good and well if you are only going to do things yourself, he is teaching and imparting his knowledge (which appears to be very flawed in numerous ways) to someone else who trusts him, or worse, is employed by him and may not have the authority to tell him no. I apologize for the long reply as I am not the original poster you asked the question of. I hope my answer helped.

However, I have learned enough from this channel and others to basically confirm for myself not to become a diver. I also appreciate Woodys comments, which give me more knowledge of the TRUE DANGER of this sport & enough to realize WHY stunts like the ones in this video costs lives…both of the divers and dive rescuers (how many rescue divers have died in the process). Not only the cost of human lives but additional costs too such as those incurred via the TVA, etc). Why people criticize Woodys comments are beyond my understanding. He’s trying to educate ppl and warn them against taking these risks. Woody, keep doing what you do. Ignore the naysayers. I got one have learned from. He asked great questions, but I think they were genuinely questions not hints at “I don’t think this is safe”. He asked if it was safe, and Jared said that it was, and the cameraman trusted him because he’s the authority figure and he spoke (incorrectly) but with confidence.
It’s not fair to put this on the camera man, the fact that he even noticed it was dangerous was fantastic and Jared was the one who the responsibility and accountability should fall on. Let’s not split blame to someone who isn’t even a diver in the first place.

As a trained and certified underwater pumpkin carver, this stuff is no joke. Seriously guys, get your certifications. You don't wanna be blindsided when you're at 24 meters and you lose your Aqualung carving knife. The class I took taught me a very valuable lesson: never underwater pumpkin carve without a backup carving knife. Preferably from Aqualung. Specifically a titanium one. Also, you can go ahead and try to carve pumpkins at depth without training, but your pumpkin is gonna look bad. In my class, I was taught many cool and interesting designs. Dive smart, not stubborn.

I love AWP and the work that they do is beyond reproach. The comfort and closure that they bring victims’ families is unparalleled. I can also understand that hands on experience is often more valuable than a certification - I deal with this on a daily basis at my own job. BUT trying to teach a diver several new skills at once without going into the reasoning and function of how and why they’re performed a certain way is a disaster waiting to happen. Doug is a competent diver and no doubt Jared cares about his safety and trusts Doug’s judgement, but clearly this went badly. Clearly both men bit off more than they could chew. Super grateful for both men and their families that this was just a mildly embarrassing incident rather than a tragedy.

I nearly drowned on my very last open water certification dive. Only reason I did not panic was because of my instructor's exceptionally good training. We were doing our final test at passing over our regulators for buddy breathing. We were also doing it with no masks. The idea being you'd been hit in the face and lost your mask and reg. So I was blind and my instructor gave me the signal to spit out my reg by tapping me on the shoulder. My buddy then grabbed my held out his reg. We done the pass off a thousand times. So I reached out, grabbed it and put it in my mouth. The problem? My buddy had given it to me upside down. Most of my first breath was water.
Only reason I didn't panic was because my instructor had told us that was a possible problem we could have. So I stayed calm used what air I had sucked in to cough, and flipped the reg over. Took me a minute to get all the water out of my lungs, but I did it. My instructor told me later he was two seconds from pulling my weights and sending us up. We were about thirty to forty feet down at the time.
Either way, TRAINING. IS. EVERYTHING! And an instructor with a thousand or several thousands of dives under his belt helps too. His name is Greg Haywood and is a PADI certified instructor. Potential for the Dive Talks crew to know of him.

In my second OWD dive, I took my buddy's regulator upside down, 3 times in a row, on my own, breathing some air, drinking some salt water :). I didn't really panic but after 3 tries I felt I just had to bolt to the surface. We were only about 15 feet deep. Then I took the regulator on the surface, looked at it, learned which way is the correct way, and did it right on my fourth try. I don't think I will ever forget that lesson :).

If your instructor told you that was a potential problem they probably had him give it to you upside down on purpose.
In any case if you inhale a bunch of water doesn't your body start violently coughing ? Like when you take a drink and some goes down your air pipe accidentally ? Seems like water down the wrong pipe would be an instant death sentence underwater because you'd cough and more water would come in , causing more coughing . You'd die really quick. No?

    • @journeymanic9605
      @journeymanic9605 9 месяцев назад +3

@chetwalther-ep9zb I got like half a breath of water. I knew what had happened pretty much instantly. So yeah, I was trying to cough. Think of it like holding in a very irritating sneeze. I just had to have enough awareness to flip my reg, hold it in my mouth, then cough, so I inhaled air instead of more water. It wasn't fun. My instructor did everything exactly as he said he would to everyone else. He wasn't the type to surprise people. Plus we were 30 feet under. An accident there would have been serious.

I'm a NAUI Master/Rescue diver who just completed my SDI Self Reliant diver this weekend, and this hurt me to watch. I really love their channel and respect what they do, and I've emailed them before offering to dive with them. I'm also a Midwestern Great Lakes wreck diver. A dive to 100-110ft in cold water is extremely routine here, and if you do the proper training (For NAUI it'd be AOW that gets you certified to 130ft, though you don't actually go deeper than 100 until Master Diver).
There's so many things wrong here. They had NO dive plan, no gas planning, probably have no clue what their SAC or RMV is to even begin gas planning. No buoyancy control, I mean this honestly when I ask if the newer diver has ever had explained to them how gas burns much much faster at depth. He panicked and obviously didn't purge that reg (or didn't do it properly) and he could have very easily died there. A LOT of people when they get that first breath of water from not purging the reg they instantly spit it out and gasp water and its all over from there. I was part of a search at a local quarry and because the person was found with no air and no reg in their mouth, we're pretty sure that's exactly what happened.
He also should have accepted those gloves since he compounded the factors for deco sickness of A: a deep dive HUFFING air, B: an emergency swimming ascent, C: Being cold, D: altitude.

My blood pressure is get high watching this... Jared has the personal of a con artist. He pretend to be an expert of things he doesnt even know. What he is doing is so dangerous because you could lose your life instead of money if you believed him. Yes, you can learn a lot from a really life emergency, IF YOU SURVIVE! Otherwise you will just become people’s training material. Yes, you have the right to risk your own life, but with only ‘open water’ certification, he doesn't even know what he doesn't know, yet acting like an instructor. He is murdering Doug. Doug, Please STAY AWAY from Jared! he is not a friend, he is risking your life. PLEASE get some proper training, then you will know how ridiculous he is.

oh my gosh, I just found your video after watching the AWP over the weekend and as an experienced and trained professional Diver and Medical Provider I was screaming at the TV. I felt bad because I wanted to be so excited for these guys for all they do but I have been horrified at their unfortunate and yet often un-necessary risks or oversights to safety. like the time the dove off the dock while boats were whizzing by and they had no flag up, they were not letting bypassing boats know that a diver is down. I get that the guys are doing good, but they get amped up and start rushing to get to the wreck and skip steps. getting bent doesn't always happen instantaneously, Bends can come on gradually. and why don't they have oxygen on hand? this is nuts.

People like to toss the term "dunning-kruger effect" around and it often gets attached to people who are simply stupid. Jared in this video however is a perfect explanation of what Dunning-Kruger describes and the dangers inherent. He is not stupid, at all. He is over-confidant in himself. Every successful excursion leads to an increase in that over confidence. He points to a perceived ego of instructors(often accurate) while completely failing to recognize that exact same ego in himself. We are all susceptible to this on some level, my self most certainly included.

Example they can reconize stressed/struggling divers very quickly and they stay within range to assist quickly, even though they ( instructor ) will scrub their own pleasure dive to ensure a divers safety. Because they dont want anyone in danger on their watch !!! A great example was with Bryan Stafford with Lake Hickory Marina with a stressed diver that was not in his group.

My big concern for Jarad is complacency.... as a personal example I have done a lot of chainsaw work. Thousands of hours. Cutting graft sites and associated cutting in fruit orchards. This work was mostly done using little chainsaws with special low kick chains. Using this gear I have never had a saw kick, I have never had a near miss. So a few months ago one of my shelter belts dropped a tree out of it so I broke out the saw. Being my place not 'work' and it being hot as hell I didn't feel the need to put on the safety gear. So I was starting to cut and I thought that the saw I used at work had a 12 inch bar with low kick chain... and the saw I was using had an 18 inch bar and normal chain.... and more than twice the BHP.... then the saw had a little kick (I controlled it fine) and I went and put on the boots, Helmet chaps and gloves.... And I can see this crew getting into trouble in a way that you can't flick the kill switch and change your setup. The hazards of shallow diving in a river or pond are so much different to deep you would need a massive amount if self awareness to make it out alive....

The letter is really a strawman argument, and does nothing to support his method. It's true a lot of learning does happen outside the classroom. That doesn't make certification worthless, far from it.
There is very robust evidence across every field that formal training has had a significant impact on safety. The most common cause of accidents is human error, so you NEED to be formally assessed before taking on a responsibility where a mistake you make could have significant consequences. You need to build experience, you need to make complex things simple.
Hands on learning is not an alternative to formal training, it's inherantly part of diving that should be practiced. Just because you do practice it, doesn't make formal training redundant. They run a great channel but it doesn't excuse them from criticism.

Practice makes permanent, not perfect. If you are trained wrong, and reinforce that bad training with practice, you can end up in WORSE shape than a novice!

To be honest, even if the certification was teaching something like underwater knitting it still would be 100% worth taking, there's always value in any sort of certification.

@@SupComRaiden2 I guess it depends on how much you value your life. There are good instructors and bad. Basic certs and extra "more elective" certification. Just like there are good and bad colleges and professors. Yes Everyone learns differently but when I go to the hospital I want a licensed surgeon to operate on me not just a self proclaimed one. A little homework would go a very long way to be safe. Diving is a technical sport that kills uneducated people.

The certificate is the base level you safe can continue learning from your self. It's a starting point for a new set of risks.
A drivers license doesn't make you a full learned driver. Just make you safe enough to continue your learning without an instructor next too you at all time. Same with divers license. OW is base level for go on with other experienced divers, but just because you made a one week course and 8 dives, doesnt make you skilled enough to difficult dives in cold and dirty water by yourself.

I was actually shocked at 16:49 when he said it's his first deep dive and a completely new system. I'm not a diver but I can't think of anything where it makes sense changing 2 things in a dangerous situation.

I am no diver, I am a software developer and every time something changes in my line of work something goes wrong.
Doug is an idiot and was not honest about surfacing quickly from 30ft because he then went on to say 50-30ft so you can take a guess he surfaced quickly from around at least 70ft.

Sounds like you're having a hard time with comments that are gaslighting. You all don't need to defend yourselves. I'm never going to dive but find all of this fascinating. I've learned so much from this channel and while I'll never use it personally, I can easily recognize the value you all provide. Training is important, over confidence is deadly, and refusing advice because of ego is stupid.
You all are doing great, don't let hateful comments stop you from doing what you're doing. Great video as always, looking forward to the next.

Honestly, a huge take away for me with this Dive Talk video I NEVER EVEN KNEW that there were SO MANY dive classes. Before this channel, I thought there were only like 3 or 4 classes total. Awesome knowledge!

I love your videos and learn so much every time. I'm a militant about diving safety and all your advice and comments have come in so handy when diving from a liveaboard with my (all-women, advanced OW) diving group in the Red Sea earlier this year. We're getting ready for a Komodo Islands liveaboard in May of next year!

I totally agree with Woody. Safety is paramount and ego is the one thing that will inevitably let you down, without fail. People need training and certifications DO create more safety. Please keep spreading these messages.

I love what AWP is doing. However, from the beginning of watching their channel, I knew Jarod was playing fast and loose with his abilities. As a firefighter I can relate to what they are talking about. So many basic issues that were missed in this dive. Very few understand what it is like to be in an environment where you have a timer on how much air you have left to breathe. There is a reason there are systems and training for this kind of thing. Jarod needs to realize this and get some actual training. I worry his attitude makes him unwilling to do just that. What he may fail to realize is his channels continuing popularity will shine a light on his poor practices. He needs to do better.
