What are the chances that the cave diver who mapped out that cave also just happens to have all his equipment with him at that moment. Wow!
I know. Just an incredible story.
I'm not a super spiritual person but stories like this make me believe in fate or that divine intervention does exist. What are the chances that all those things would fall into place? It just wasn't their day to go.
@@stacin821 What's even crazier is the diver who mapped that cave, at that location on that day, wasn't there diving, passing by, or checking it out. He was there at the exact time because...a company picnic. Just...what?
I'm not incredibly spiritual, but that is divine intervention, also the fact those divers found an incredibly rare air pocket seemingly only big enough to keep them alive long enough for him to barely save them...

The rational part of me believes that he's a Super Cave Diver (But for real) near one of his favorite dives, so he's just always around with his gear. I keep adventure gear in my bag just sometimes, you know?
But the spiritual part of me believes it was Aliens.

Yeah like the guy who thought he would be rescued from the Swiss cheese cave.. while trapped in an airpocket. He survived for weeks in there before he died, nobody could save him because they didn't know where he was, and didn't want to get lost themselves. He was only found later when a cave wall was blown in from an unrelated excavation. But he was already dead at that point.
My dad was featured on Rescue 911 for saving a family from a burning house. He was burned severely and lost every stitch of hair but saved every one of them. My dad passed last year but he will be my hero forever. Miss ya pop

@@DIVETALK it wasn't woody who first ask the lady if they were cave sert, it was woodys friend and he ran and got woody and told him and it also wasn't woodys gear it was the guy who first noticed and ran and got woody, i like your channel but you guys miss alot of what is said because your talking during it, it should stop the video whenever you need to say something, you guys do this alot, just wanted you to know, also he only blew the air so they would know he was there, he never said he did it cause the co2 witch was probably a learning experience for him so now he knows what to do if he comes across this again, anyway not being mean just think you guys should pay a little more attention to what there saying

I bet you, if that cave diver was ever unsure about always taking full cave gear with him, he sure as hell didn't doubt it after saving 2 people's lives

How anyone can just blow off their instructor is bad enough but I hope she fired them all as her students - what arrogant little know-it-alls. Woody carrying his gear in his truck going to a picnic, what a legend. He deserves the Gold Lifesaving Medal.
As a Paramedic, it amazes me, when regular people, with minimal training, but the desire to do something, anything. That is what I find truly heroic. This is an amazing story.

@@JohnSmith-ul2ce the divers is what I took away. I felt the same frustration. Like WHY. They KNEW they had limited time/oxygen and did a absolutely STUPID thing.
@@krystlem8920 obviously they shouldn’t have gone in. Yes they knew they shouldn’t ! I’m just not sure calling them stupid is helpful in any way! Especially given that one of them lost their life, that comment just rubs me the wrong way! Theirs a reason so many people that are uncertified, have lost their lives in caves! It’s not because they are stupid! Most of the time it’s open water divers who build up confidence being under water! It’s very easy to think “I’ll just go a take a quick look” and before they know it, they are lost. They don’t know how much they don’t know! Especially back before the internet.
As a surfer, I’ve rescued countless tourists swimmers that get caught in rip tides. There’s signs on the beach warning of rips! Many times it’s apparent that they have zero real ocean experience! They “know” the dangers there, but go in anyway & almost drown! They feel confident because they know how to swim so they push their limits and get in (literally) over their heads! It’s human nature!

This is crazy, I can't believe they a) went in there after saying they would go out, and b) that they had an angel on the surface who just happened to know the cave well AND have all his gear ready and on hand... Incredible that they didn't all die. Woody is a hero.

The selflessness of that woody fella blew my mind. When he dropped the first guy off and said he had to To go back down gave me a little more hope in humanity. Thanks for sharing these stories with us. I'm not a diver and in fact am scared to death of any body of water, keep up the great work.

When I got certified they also said the song Another one bites the dust works too. I thought that was kinda funny. CPR is a great thing to know.
That’s what they told me when I joined the Red Cross as well, but I think that for some it might be a bit difficult to keep count on the compressions and sing that in your head at the same time 🙈
I've hear when you're faced with a situation like that, that your training kicks in and you don't think of any thing else besides saving them. I hope I never have to find out because it would be horrible for the person going thru it, but if they do I hope that they live.

In the red cross we practiced all the time, because when you practice often enough it becomes muscle memory, you don’t have to think about doing it, you just do it.
I used to watch Rescue 911 as a kid. It still makes my eyes misty. It's very well done. Blows many of today's similar shows right out of the water, pun intended.

I feel really dumb to fess up to this but I've never watched "Rescue 911".
This has happened to me as well and it's a really tough in so many levels. We were diving in an open-pit mining that is closed since many years. Its a great place to dive because of fresh spring water coming up from the bottom and there is very clear vis there. It's also a very popular place for swimming and go to chill down hot summer days. There young boys were playing and jumping off the cliffs and swam quite far out. Suddenly one of the boys go under and isn't coming up. We were in the other pit and suddenly a guy is calling for us and wants out attention and help. We didn't hasitate to try to help out. I as the most experienced pulled everyone together to try to make a quick plan and what search system to use but the other divers didn't really understood what I talked about because they were newly certified ow-divers. We jumped in but due to their inexperience and being very stressed they kicked up so much silt and the vis was absolut zero. Even if we knew where he went down we couldn't find him. It's was later revealed that we were at the correct place but he was stuck under a big boulder or cliff. If this happens to you please try to do a simple rescue plan and follow it. If you feel anxious and stressed don't do it. I honestly would rather had done the rescue attempt myself because of my buddies being way to inexperienced. Also remember it often very hard to see people that have drowned because they die in absolute panic and their eyes are wide open, so avoid eye contact at any cost. If it comes to retrieving a body, just don't do it if you don't have the right education. It's really hard if the vis is bad and the only way to find them is to feel them. It's not nice to feel bloated and has started to decompose. I did this because I'm a former paramedic and knew I would have a chance to resuscitate the boy and I have seen plenty of dead people and been trained to treat sick and dying people and take care of deceased. I give absolutely props to people that wants to help out but sometimes the best help is to stay on the surface and help out from there. Also if you feel it too much for you or you can't handle it, don't do it! We don't want 2 bodies to retrieve. Also this rescue is amazing and so many of the odds were on their side that day. Those 2 boys lucked out, very tragic for the one! This is the type of video that all people need to see before getting certified for open water. Just like when you go to get your drivers license and they make you watch a tragedy video from car accidents. Something for people to remember and fear. Keep the great Videos coming!

I like how even with all his thousands of dives worth of experience, Woody still asks Gus questions with a special glimmer in his eyes. That passion and genuine intrigue is so awesome to see.

I remember 5 to 1. Got my first C.P.R. card in 78. Got my first A.C.L.S. card in 84. These guys are so lucky people were on the scene who knew cpr. I think cpr should be required to graduate high school. Great commentary fella's. Im an old Kirk and Spock trekie too!
I agree. Plus we all took the Advanced Life Saving & Water Safety course as soon as we were old enough. Not to be lifeguards, but for safety as friends had a swimming pool, and we grew up around rivers and lakes, swimming & kayaking. The parents highly encouraged it. (Actually required it once we were teens if we wanted to be swimming or on the rivers without adult supervision).
I think CPR should be universally required too. Like along with a drivers license or with graduating high school like you said. It’s a very important life skill that you hope to never use, but are more than thankful to know if you ever are in that situation and need to perform. Anyone can do it, but it does take proper training to do it well. You’re going to break ribs, you’re not just pushing lightly, you’re pumping that chest, hard. I’ve been an EMT for a long time. You’d be shocked what people don’t know, even just basic first aid stuff. Hope you’ve never needed your skill set but always good to stay up on!
@@Stephaniemickle I think CPR should just be switched to straight compressions and have it as part of PE classes in high school. It seem's every 5-10 years they are changing the program and i think that puts people off.
When i started it was 5 initial breaths then 15 - 2 for an adult and 5-2 for child, Then they ditched the 5 initial breathes and went with just 15 - 2 for everyone, as woody said now its 30 - 2 for adults and 15-2 for child.
I've had to do CPR once there were do of us and within 3-4 minutes we knew we were fucking up the breaths but just carried on. The ambo's were able to revive the lady in the hospital. She has some permeant damage but thankfully it's only minor and she can live a fairly normal life.

My high school’s required health class had paramedics come teach us all CPR a few years ago and they taught us compressions only. They told us that essentially the survival rates with and without breaths were similar and people with minimal or no training tend to end up getting more confused and distracted trying to do breaths as well.
That rescue was truly amazing. Huge kudos to him for going down again and again for these guys. And they were so incredibly lucky there was an experienced cave diver there as well as an air pocket. Seriously, what are the odds.
On a different note - the people doing CPR and trying to revive the guys also did a great job. So many good choices made there. Reacting like that in an emergency... Because of life guard training I've learned first aid very intensively, but luckily never had to use it like this. My mum brought someone back with CPR once, though. That sure made everyone emotional.
In 2014 in Germany it required 700 rescuers to get an injured and unconscious cave scientist out of a cave from a depth of 3.200 feet and over a distance of 6 miles. It took the team 1 whole day to climb down to him and another 10 days in total darkness to pull him up to the entrence of the cave by hand.
This was an incredibly well told story, especially for the typically ridiculously over dramatized 90’s tv docudramas. The commentary you two have is also very entertaining even as someone who is not a diver, only been recreational shallow water once on vacation. However you do a great job of explaining proper process and procedures in a way non-divers can understand and how an inherently risky activity can be made relatively safe by following them.

These kinds of creators tend to get big after youve noticed them. It might mean youtube subtly boosted and that’s why you saw them. I’ve never been into diving ever and I’ve discovered them somehow lol

@@jeskeepinitreal It's historically accurate. The recovery position used today was not universally adopted by general first aid courses until 1992.
Before that most first aid courses taught people to keep the victim on there back with the head tilted sideways by default.
Nowadays in many places/courses they dont even teach the air blowing. Just to keep pushing at a steady pace.

The fact that any of them survived is insane. The luck of woody not only being there but having his tanks on him and could go down immediately the odds are astronomically tiny. Talk about a guardian angel.

Would never cave dive but have read and watched enough on it to learn about frog kicks. I actually frog kick while cruising above a reef(I am a photographer) and it helps me avoid kicking the reef, sponges, coral etc. I’m deathly afraid of overhead environments

Seconded. I have never had even the slightest interest in diving, hell, I don't even like swimming. But these videos randomly got recommended and I've watched several, and enjoyed what I've seen so far. Mostly the emergency videos like this one seem to appeal to me the most as well, it's something everyone can relate to and learn from. I've learned more than I ever could've imagined about diving though watching these videos, and since watching, I could see myself maybe giving it a try one day. The passion you guys have is a bit contagious and I suspect you'll inspire a lot of people to try diving. Keep up the good work boys.
I’m new to your channel. This is the best video I have seen yet. It perfectly highlights the difference between an experienced, cave certified diver and an untrained novice. I am just a recreational open water diver, but I’m an ER doctor so I have a bit of insight into the medical side of this story. Hyperbaric chambers can be used to treat drowning victims, even if decompression sickness is not a major problem. A major consequence of drowning is that the lungs become saturated and inflamed. This makes it difficult for oxygen to cross from air to blood in the lung. Due to this, doctors will have to use higher pressure ventilator settings to get oxygen to cross, and that will damage the lung tissue further and make it even more stiff. As you know, in a hyperbaric chamber at higher pressures there are vastly more oxygen molecules per volume of gas. This allows oxygenation with lower volumes of gas, reducing the lung damage. At higher pressures there is also diffusion of oxygen into tissues (most importantly the brain but all organs). On a dive this is a problem but in a hospital it can be a treatment for a patient whose injured lungs cannot keep up with the demand.. There could have been some concern for decompression sickness but the chamber was likely used more for this reason.

So, based on all you've stated: wouldn't it be safe to say that the Hyperbaric Chamber would be the BEST suited mechanism for those with severe cases of Covid?
As opposed to the Ventilator being utilized? ( as the Vents are more than likely the 'main cause' for most of these patients' declining conditions...)

Great work guys. I can't even imagine being on that situation, I have had scary moments as a diver not for me being stupid or taking stupid decisions but because of a poor instructor I remember that really got me scarred was diving a plane wreck at 140ft down right after our Nitrox class the instructor decided that we had to dive at 140ft with Nitrox 32 with a PO2 of 1.6 I was the only one who measured the oxygen present in the tank and I set my dive computer for a 1.4 PO2 when I was going down I got the alert of my computer and I went back up fighting against a strong current in the middle of the ocean and I surface about a couple miles away from the boat, that instructor could have killed 15 divers that day pushing recreational divers to 140ft with Nitrox 32... thankfully no one suffered any injuries but they could have been... It is hard when you are new and you are trusting your life in an instructor that can't even follow the book...

Instructors are helpful to have around. Ultimately my survival is MY responsibility. I was on a dive a while back as a newbie, maybe 20 or so total. Using their gear my Reg was leaking on inhale. It got worse the deeper we went. It was a fairly shallow dive maybe 60' at the most. I stayed shallower around 30' so if I had to bolt I was safer. An Instructor noticed me and checked me a couple times I pointed to the Reg and gave the So So signal. After a while it started leaking a lot more and I switched to the backup which seemed to work well...Luckily. I then dropped with the rest of the group once I felt I was safe and comfortable.
This man Woody deserves a National Medal for his bravery. 👋I've never seen anything like it and I'm 63.

I remember this when it was originally broadcast on TV. I still don't know how Woody made it into that cave with all that equipment along with the massive set of balls it takes to do that in the first place. Luckiest divers ever, that he just happened to be there with all his gear.

Yeah that's mount K2 disaster levels of lucky. At some point in the 90's (start of 2000's? Can't recall) a crew was climbing towards the summit of mount K2 to film for a tv channel, but stopped halfway in cause one guy felt bad, and the whole crew decided to head back to camp. They helped to rescue about half a dozen climbers on their way down, as the weather got worse.
As a first aid instructor I tell students 30:2 for cpr/rescue breaths. 100-120BPM (baby shark is good as when you finish a verse, it’s time for breaths)
Yes we teach it this way also as this is latest recommendation. The chest compressions are critical.
I was taught by my first aid instructors that in cases of drowning you start with 5 rescue breaths then continue on with 30:2..

What a hero. Guy is like superman; even when he's doing casual things, he keeps his superhero costume around just in case. Those divers experienced the equivalent of winning the lottery in terms of probability.

I wish you guys know how much I appreciate this video. I couldn't compose myself to write about it before but discussing this rescue gave me so much information in case where's a drowning victim. My father, who was the one who taught me to swim, drowned during the visit he came to see me, before he saw me. His body was found 7 days later. Where I used to live, the sea can be very dangerous, especially if one underestimates the sand dips and currents. You’re not going to believe this! I REMEMBER watching this exact episode when I was a kid! Specifically, the two divers up in the air pocket and the rescue diver holding the regulator up to them reviving one. My family would gather on the couch every week to watch every episode of Rescue 911. Thank you for your chats!

The undeserved yet greatly appreciated luck that a _cave_ trained diver was that close and *had his gear ready enough to dive!* Let alone one who was familiar with this exact cav? Unreal. Amazing that the divers hadn't gotten very separated. Imagine this scenario if one, just one, had gone down the other passage in the confusion. Two of them being found together but not stuck was a boon too. Thanks for your amazing share.

I know I’ll never dive anywhere unless it’s my pool but it’s hard to express the level of respect I have for all divers, especially in situations like these. Mind blowing to think how much mental and physical strength you need to do rescues. Legend!

The first time i tried a scuba tank was when i was a kid, on vacation, in Spain. The pool was only 10 ft. I was a beast of a swimmer but the reg felt so alien and weird, so panic ensued hahaa. I cant imagine being 100ft down. I respect you guys greatly. You have huge balls.

Happened at Otter Spring. The family of the deceased sued the instructor in 2005 claiming that she didn’t convey the dangers of cave diving and didn’t instruct him in cave diving.
I knew it! For god sakes, people have the hardest time taking accountability for their actions.
She said "NO! Not going in here! Do you understand?" - "Yes" - "Alright we go back up!"
I will never understand people who don't follow instructions. They are like children.
What was the outcome of the case? Also, I agree with Yann, it was their choice to go in the cave. Sad outcome, but not the instructor’s fault.
And she probably lives with severe guilt even though faultless.

@@ninachr Yes. I've lead adults for Sierra Club, Dive Club, mission trips, and Kayak Club trips, and adults are TERRIBLE at being team and authority oriented...even when they've signed pretrip agreements. Children listen better and lie less.

Hello you two, it always pleases me to see your reactions to such videos. I myself am a German rescue diver and can only confirm that any rescue whether diver or civilian is very difficult and deserves great personal respect. I am glad that everything went so smoothly.

If you've never watched it would be great to see you guys to watch "Cave Diving Story" by Sid Perou, especially one of the first 2 episodes when they are still developing the techniques. Its a really spectacular documentary where they recreated the equipment and techniques cave divers were using as early as the 20s in the UK.
Episode 2 "The Devil is a Gentleman" is more exciting would make better content

Had to watch that again!! Let's take a minute and give props to Bob for kicking off the rescue. He wasted zero time... divers down? Yup. Cave certified? Nope... and he was in a full sprint for help. Incredible reaction. I mean this was in real time, no second guessing himself, no sticking around to see if they pop out in a minute or two. You guys do point it out, but i think the actual rescue dive overshadows this major detail as the video goes unwinds.

Amazing and hats off to the lifesavers just being there at the right time. Condolences to the family that lost their loved one but hopefully his loss has now saved many more lives by just hearing and seeing this re-enactment. Mercy, what a story !! I truly don’t think that people realize how dangerous cave diving can be - you have to be certified and have the necessary equipment. One thing I do know - you two are going to save lives with these videos !!!! The things I’ve learned … it also makes me realize that I need to get CPR certified. So many heroes 🙏🏼
I’ve heard that story before but seeing that video was edge of the seat type stuff ... great find ... amazing story. Woody talked about a higher power from ancient cave reaction ... this story makes you think ... the amount of things that had to happen for those guys to live is mind blowing. Remove one of those things that happened exactly when they did happen and they all die ... great video

Did this 'higher power' favor the ones who lived or the one who died? It's discomfiting to think there is some cloud potato up there, lounging around with a live-or-die joypad playing sick games with people's lives all day. I'll take lady luck and a superhero cave diver over a higher power any day.

This story is AMAZING, I can't believe how lucky all these elements came together and how many things went right.
However, the lesson stays the same. This all could've been completely avoided and they all could've come out alive had they just LISTENED to the more experienced diver.
In the case of this oxygen deprivation the breaths in cpr are a little more important

That is one of the reasons when I even go on small camping trips or gold hunting I plan and prepare heavily. Hell I always pack about 80+ pounds of gear and supplies in case. Cave diving I wouldn't even consider unless I got trained properly. Heck I was trained in Mexico to Identify edible mushrooms in Jalisco even then I don't touch any even if I am confident because its not something I do every day.
I found this channel bc of ur reviews on Mr Ballen's cave diving tragedy videos, and absolutely it. I'm not only not a diver, I have a fear of very deep water, especially the ocean. Luckily I live inland in south Ontario, Canada, in between 2 Great Lakes - Ontario and Erie. They're more than big enough for me for a short boat ride or fishing trip.
I used to watch Rescue 911 religiously w my parents and sister when it was on. Amazing show that taught me a lot about safety, situations to avoid danger, and how to respond to certain situations. I ended up working in a nursing home and then w developmentally disabled adults for a group home agency, both required First Aid - CPR certification. That taught me a lot more. Ur definitely right about training taking over. I worked w a wide range of individuals w many different needs. One person had a serious seizure disorder that required we remain calm and take control of the situation. Others had serious behavioral issues which required us to have specialized training in physical intervention including take down and floor restraint.

That went from a horror story to a miracle very unexpectedly quickly.
That that particular rescue diver was there and had his gear is incredibly lucky. And that they were both brought out so quickly by that true hero, cause that’s what the definition of a hero is to me, is amazing. Even though only one of them survived that was a great story.
I heard of another story where a experienced diver was doing a body recovery down a several hundred metre hole and unfortunately died himself. But when they pulled up his safety line he came up with the dead diver he was attempting to recover. In his last moments he had secured the body to himself.
3 out of the 4 men survived! Not just 1! And what a heartbreaking story you shared about the diver who died trying to recover a body. 😔
