You deserve a great sail after all that well done hard work! It's always great when everything you have done pays off and works out great. I can't wait to get to the Atlantic Crossing! My wife says she is too scared to cross an ocean but I think she will warm up to it eventually...Especially since we have watched a few people successfully do it. Keep living the Dream!
Again your videos are more than educational, of all the different sailing vidoes I watch, none have ever talked about tuning a rig and it make so mush sense. others talk about replacing , so again thank you a peaceful relaxing yet very educational, I hope you get more subscribers, I do send your videos to friends great couple ,and I will continue to enjoy great content :)

It's been quite the journey, and enjoyable to see the trials and tribulations of the Med and how you both have gained enough experience to tackle the rigours of the Atlantic.
If it gets tough, Google Alain Bombard to provide perspective 😁.
Sleep deprivation is a problem, however I think on such a long passage your mind and body will eventually overcome any discomfort and you'll probably be happy sleeping on the bowsprit!

Thanks so much, Jason. We thought/hoped so too, but unfortunately it didn't happen. Elena slept 2 hours on a lucky night, 0 hours most nights, which proved to be a huge challenge.

Hi Ryan/Elanor. I have been watching your videos from day one. As some one with an interest in marine navigation could you explain how you use your chart plotter to plot your course and way points etc. Thanks Terry Liverpool.
Every time I watch your videos I observe the cockpit without that helm. I really want to do the same to my boat (our boats are almost identical) but I hope when you get closer to the carribean (better cell coverage) we can talk before I change mine over. I just have a few questions that are lengthy to write. Great videos as usual.

I have really learned a lot, watching you two! Thank you. Just one complaint.... You didn't wave to me in Estepona (between Málaga and Gibraltar) as you went by! It seems strange to me to see such familiar sights on your video, but I usually see them from land. (Or the ferry on the way to Morocco). From the area where I live, I can see the snow capped mountains behind the Spanish coast, and the mountains in Morocco, and of course Gibraltar. Also I sometimes go to Tarifa for a weekend. I wonder if one day I will graduate from the school of Sailing Kittiwake and see the view from your perspective!
So good to see you on yur way again, it's odd thinking that this was filmed pre Covid getting a grip in Europe Although at the same time you couldn't have picked a safer place to be had you tried. I notice you have swapped out the Wallas cooker for gas, was there a reason for that (sorry if you covered that in a previous episode I must have missed it)

Is your rigging cable or rod? I see you have a Tiller and not a wheel. Cooking with propane or alcohol? When I sail the Atlantic back in the early 70’s I had to navigate with a sextant and charts. There were no GPS’s.
Lovely video, but please, please, take your tourniquets out of that plastic bag in the depths of a first aid kit with loads of other identical bags!
If you ever need it you'll be flapping and you'll need it NOW. Put it somewhere you can easily get it, I'd suggest near the companionway so you can get it from inside or out.
I don't mean to sound preachy, and hopefully you'll never need it 😄

I remember doing astro as a young acting-Sub-Lt. Morning Stars, Bearing Amplitude at sunrise, morning sun, merpass, afternoon sun, Bearing Amplitude at sunset, evening stars. And repeat daily. Ahhh, the memories.

@@SailingKittiwake It got old fast. Then GPS came in and astro went out the window. I have some friends that are still in the Navy, and they tell me they are starting to train on this again. Apparently, it is impossible to jam! lol.

Fabulous guys, you sound so positive and happy to be out of the Med and on towards a new horizon as you have had some tough times with rig, collision etc. When you said you had your med kit ready for any apocalypse that didn’t include a global pandemic but you were in the safest place. How do you find Open CPN? Do you use this exclusively with AIS overlay on the PC? Does your tablet have Open CPN also or Navionics as a back up? Not sure if you have gone through your nav gear in a video but point me to one if you have. Thanks and hope you are still enjoying the sun in the Caribbean. Andy UK

Curious I know you sealed between the Teak Decks boards with a black sealant but wondered why you never seem to treat / seal the actual teak deck boards themselves? They always appear sun bleached and begging for a coat of some type of finish? I'm sure there is a reason as your "Mechanic" never seems to miss a detail, he's a pretty sharp bugger? Cheers
Hi Mike, so true! Teak doesn't need any finish - it likes the sun and salt water. That's how Skua's teak decks are in excellent condition after 45 years. Some people don't like the silver colour the teak naturally becomes, so they use teak cleaners to make it look brown.

When setting rig on one design j boats I was taught to use a halyard from top taken to equal side points to find center then sight up the mast to center lowers

HEllo, great episode, you deserve this nice sail! Did I see correcly that your chart plotter is synchronized with the AIS receiver and also with the wind anenometer? What plotter and anemometer do you use? Best regards!
Yes, it’s an old Raymarine that was already on the boat but we never really use it - it requires expensive charts to work. It just so happened that the previous owner had the Western Med charts on it.
We prefer to use a tablet with Open CPN and the AIS connected to it via wifi. We can see the windspeed both inside and outside of the boat on the speed log anyway.

Love it! Super excited to see you leave the med. We had a brief stay in Almerimar on a short delivery run last year. It was off season and walking off the boat into the shops was a real treat. February 2nd.... you guys just got out in time, I think! Here at the marina we are fielding calls on a daily basis from cruisers looking to stay in Oban as they passage through Scotland to Norway and Sweden. We feel really bad for the cruisers who have contacted us. They tend to be either just setting out and have got stuck before they could begin their adventures or they are desperately trying to get home with the boat before money runs out / work starts. Pulling off the "Full Pardy" (i.e. being self-supporting whilst cruising) is clearly not easy either - well done and thanks for taking us along. Please keep it going! Where would we all be without the Pardys and the Hiscocks? and the - um - Kittiwakes!

Thanks so much, huge compliment :) Yes, we got extremely lucky this time :) It's never easy to live on a boat full-time and plans never go as expected, but a worldwide pandemic isn't something anyone could predict or get used to deal with. We hope everyone is safe - that's the most important thing.

I guess it's too late now, but I always do 4 three hr watches from 1800 to 0600, then 3 four through the day. That gives you a different night watch every day. Anyway I am enjoying your channel.bKeep it up.

While I commend you on the boat repairs you need to be careful teaching your viewers how to tune a rig ? Why you may ask ? Well let me explain. When tuning a rig you need to consider a few items ? Is the rig deck stepped or does it go through the deck down to the keel. If the rig is deck stepped you should be carful not to overload the shrouds so you push the mast through the deck. Depending upon how the bulkheads below are constructed / construction below, this can happen , it is not uncommon. Also take into consideration the condition of the deck, is it cord with balsa or ply ? Is the cording compromised , is the deck solid below the mast step ? Like your vessel take a quick look at the condition of the chain plates. Are they leaking ? How are they fastened to the hull ? Are they mounted to the bulkheads? In what condition is the tabing from the hull to the bulkheads. When sailing do you find that the bulkheads creak, this is a sure sign of chain plate / bulkhead issues.
There are quite a few other items one needs to know before attempting this task. If you don’t know what you are doing leave this to professionals.
You will only get yourself in trouble !!!
As Ryan specifically said, very clearly, it was NOT a tutorial and NOT meant to teach anyone to tune their own rig. No one can learn to tune a rig in 2 minutes...
