    Yeah! Atlantic crossing start! I understand having to prioritize making the money...It's awesome you found a job that you can do underway. I never really liked marina's myself...I feel like they are expensive RV parks with less space between you and your neighbor. Really like your adventure. Keep living the dream!

    As always, a brilliant video. I have to confess with the winds here for last few days of force 6/7 I am glad I play with old cars. But I still miss the water.
    Wish you both fair winds, tides and currents.

    Hi guys, have a look at the "Easyloc" Clutches they will last decades and the internals are S/Steel long plates that grip the ropes over a long distance, that doesn't damage the outer sheeth. They are a great price too, a lot less than the Lewmar Plastic Camlocs. Get the medium and large sizes. Large for your Main and Genoa halyards, mostly because you won't need to load the rope tail onto the winch. Cheers

    Spinlocks need to be closed so that when the jaws touch the line, you pull the line a bit and that makes the mechanism to work effortlessly and hold the line. If you must use force to lock a spinlock, your doing it wrong.

    Dear lord don't screw your floors down. Getting access to those spaces in a long passage could mean serious complications. Use magnets. child locks or some putty to stay them, but getting a screwdriver or damaging your floors in an emergency at 3AM can only make things worse when you have 2 weeks to go. Safe passage.

    Your bust Spinlocks are not “clutches” as you call them but jammers. They’re designed to either fully release or stop the rope but nothing in between. In contrast your new units look like Lewmar which are genuine clutches, meaning you can progressively apply or release pressure to control the rope. I put similar Lewmar clutches on my last boat. Bulletproof.

    Had exactly same problem with my clutches on my oceanlord new ones are much stronger all metal on working mechanisms

  • @chriswills9530

    Good one this. I used to fit Spinlock clutches to posh yachts. Think the XTS and XAS models. I thought they had a metal "chassis" under the plastic skin, but could well be miss-remembering. In any case, might be worth looking for a code number and contacting Spinlock to get an age and assess whether these were faulty or had lived their lives. You'd think maybe one or two might have been affected by an impact but def not all those. I'd be interested to know what age they were.

    One would think you would use flat top screws for the floorboards so they sit flush on the floor. Maybe you just didn't have any.

    Great vid, thanks, the work aboard at sea and rough anchorages issue helped me decide what kind of vessel I will buy. Keep sailing, you guys are authentic and your vids have been of great help. Question... Do you ever wish you had the catamaran back?. 2nd Q... What do you think of trimarans?

    Can anyone help what's the best boat to solo sail ? I'm from uk my aim is to sail south from uk I'd like to spend winter months in the sun and come back to uk in summer, I'm 40 this year and it's been on my mind for a while, I'm going to take sailing lessons at some point,
    What boat would be good I'm mechanically minded and I think I'd use the motor a lot to get round if needed, and how much would I need to spend , is there anything to think about being a solo sailor

    Do you plan on doing a Pacific crossing?

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  4 года назад +9

      For now, nope. We've been stuck in one Caribbean country ever since we landed and now it's hurricane season, so we need a few years to explore the Caribbean Sea. Lots of countries on our wish list: E Caribbean, USVIs, BVIs, DR, PR, Bahamas, Cayman Islands, Mexico, Belize, Guatemala,... we'll see how we feel after that :)

  • @joshuahhhhhh

    I am really considering sailing. I'm going to take some classes but I want to know how to find others to sail/converse with if I do live at sea. I would want to stay at anchor for the most part and fit my monohull with solar and wind power. I'm nervous but I believe I can do it. Is the Caribbean forgiving for a new sailer?

    • @frankd2301
      @frankd2301 4 года назад +2

      It is a tight knit community and you will easily make friends. The Carib has consistent winds with many anchorages and few if any long passages.

    • @SailingKittiwake
      @SailingKittiwake  4 года назад +2

      Hi Joshua, it depends on where in the Caribbean - the E Caribbean has lots of wind and currents, so it may feel intimidating to a novice :) As they said, the Virgins look good, and the Bahamas too. You'll meet lots of other people because there's always other boats in the anchorages :) Just swing by other boats by dinghy and say hi. Best of luck!
