Our black wrought iron railings from 1972 were gloss black, then after a light sanding painted them flat black and it made a world of difference , I’m trying to figure out how to router out wood oak caps for the top of the railings to add a even more modern rustic look. To replace the railings would be over $6000 for the entire house so this was a good option
It's so expensive to replace the railings. I'd love to hear if you are able to figure out a method to add the wood oak caps to the top! That sounds amazing.
Bigger Than The Three Of Us -They sell the Oak Railing Caps at Home Depot but the channel underneath is not wide enough to go over the wrought iron caps, they would have to be milled out and that’s a lot of work but it can be done as I have seen it at a neighbors so I’m hoping someone out there hopefully has thought of this and already done this to retro fit but I haven’t located it yet, being hopeful!
A neighbor had it done many years ago with the oak caps possibly from Home Depot but he had to mill out the underside and then drilled holes through the wrought iron to mount the Oak Caps to the railing with special screws ... looks great and yes a good trim carpenter could pull this off and possibly myself with a little trial and error as I have a small woodshop with routers and other tools
I have the same type of railing and want to cut out the same large decorative pieces. What tool did you use to perform this task? Really want to hear more about the project details!
No, I didn't. I don't think that would be a very good idea since hands are constantly touches those areas. You may not be able to get it smooth enough.
Looked better with designs
It looks great! Thank you.
I would have left the scrolls and repainted as I think the art work would look nice.
Trying to get my scrolls off as well. Thanks for the video!

@@user-pq1pk5mi8f I'd look for a wood carpenter (also called a trim carpenter).

Look nice..Do u have to remove the pain to painted black?..
It probably would have looked good just painted black tbh
Yeah. Restored correctly, old scroll work is beautiful.
Did you take the whit paint off or sand it off? Is the latter what you meant when you said you "primed and painted" it?

Hi. I got it from Lumens. Directly linked on the shop my home page on my blog. =)
What paint did you use
spray paint. =)
Did you also grind off the loop at the end of the railing? We have the same railings that I’d love to give a modern update to

Do it yourself, visit the Woodglut website and find out how.
doesnt even show how to remove the railing..NOT GOOD
If you can’t see for yourself that it’s screwed to the floor then maybe diy isn’t for you 😂
