@@tmm4195I mean most don't honestly pay attention first time around most and probably even you thought it was a cute love story until you watch it again.
Yeah, these were all just a set of really talented Black actors that were in these great films that most non-Black people never watched. It's like people only knowing Regina Hall from Scary Movie. Weird that this seems to be a trend now in reactions to watch these Black led slice-of-life films. Either way, glad more people are discovering this film.
It's not. Those people have the privilege to be able to live in their own world. We didn't and don't have that. I'm not saying this in a man way m these guys are cool but a lot of yt people won't know these actors because they never desired to watch these movies. These guys have been pretty open though.
It is but I also blame his dad bc he’s not a bad person and obviously what he pulled was no excuse but he also should’ve apologized sooner. Her chasing after him five years later does make her look weak ngl and I’m not a big fan of how they got back together but it’s also been five years ago she probably got over it
yeah, my only complaint about this movie is that they definitely made it seem like Monica was in the wrong when she did absolutely nothing wrong. despite that, I will always love this movie because Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps had amazing chemistry and the music always gets me hyped! thanks for the reaction, fellas!
Something I just picked up on is I think when Monica played Q "for his heart" he realized in that moment that she pushed him to be better his whole life. I think he hadn't played basketball in months because he was scared of making his injury worse. But when they played, he saw that he still got it.
I kept wondering why yall were saying Kobe was in this. Made me question my sanity, I’ve seen this so many times and was like umm he’s not in this. What is up with Google?! First listing This Christmas as a musical and now just randomly throwing Kobe in the cast
She landed on a sprinkler spigot. Your editing is on point...great choices! They dated in real life (for years) after meeting on set during filming of it.
When they started shooting this movie the wnba hadn’t started yet, after it started in 1996 they shot the last scene with Monica playing for the LA sparks
All these comments about the All State man and not one mentioned his name😂. That’s Dennis Haysbert! He’s a great actor and has been in many things, including Major League, 24, Heat, Waiting to Exhale, and a bunch of animated series like The New Batman Adventures, Superman: The Animated Series, and Justice League.
Dang wish y’all didn’t cut from the mom scene at the slap - I really like the rest of the scene. Monica and her mom both finally let it all hang out and were honest with each other. It’s not the kumbaya moment you get in some films but it is REAL. Now they really see each other & it’ll hopefully lead to a more healthy relationship between them in the future.
Imagine being in love with a man and being there for him through an injury and he breaks it off with you 2 weeks before your wedding bc his highschool sweetheart challenged him to a damn basketball game in the middle of the night. I WOULD BE SICK!!!!!
The "first time" scene was one of the most realistic portrayals ever (at the time). It was her room. Q probably had the condom on him because his initial plans were probably to sleep with Shaunie. He was still wearing his clothes from the party when she called him outside.
They were confused because he took his pants off at the end of the bed and then he's suddenly reaching over to the side of the bed for a condom. Now I'm confused too
Oh and speaking of complicated parental relationships - I also enjoyed Quincy’s relationship with his dad. While he may not have been a good husband he was a good father (for the most part), he was trying to make Quincy a better man than he was and his advice about college turned out to be right. His biggest misstep was probably just trying to portray himself as perfect and stay a hero in his son’s eyes instead of being honest and transparent that he’s also just a flawed human.
Yes, but they at least didn’t have him fully hooking up with her… like he in that moment realizing he still wants to be with Monica… so they briefly kiss and hug… I imagine he broke off his engagement the next day. I would have been mad if they had sex. Either way it still sucks for the fiancé.. but better to call off the wedding then go through with it, knowing you’re still in love with someone else
Well it’s a more “realistic love story” 🤷🏼♀️ Life isn’t like a hallmark movie, and I appreciate watching flawed characters learn from mistakes and grow. Q was an ASS a lot throughout the movie, but once he grew and matured he became a better husband and father that his dad never was
@ I just provided my opinion. I think it’s a great story overall. I will be agree it is realistic. I think you should fight for love but on Monica’s end, it came across that she loved him more than he loved her. I definitely think it is realistic. Still a phenomenal movie.
@@taylormade9748 yes, and I wish we would have seen a more verbal apology from him at the end scene…. I didn’t feel like she really owed him an apology for when they broke up
I do love this movie but getting older you realize it was crazzzy that Monica was the one to apologize and win him back later. You guys should watch "Just Wright" starring Queen Latifah and Common 😊❤
Growing up is realizing that this “love” story is the most crazy, gaslighting unromantic nonsense! Lol like the end scene song is literally playing “you made a fool of me” while that man is literally dunking in her face (bad knee be damned) while she all but begs for him back, girl stand up! But, we still love watching it and it’s true classic haha
"I want them to get together in a different way." it's called love & basketball lol Love this movie. and this is a small detail: but I have always really liked how the tension between Monica and her mother was never really resolved. there was no scene where they came together and made up - the last time we see the mother, I think, she's slapping Monica. maybe they cut a scene for time - but I like the ambivalence of leaving it as is - because not all problems are resolved, and it feels complex that way. also Alfre Woodard is SO good. she played Sanaa Lathan's mother another time in the wonderful Something New!
Not sure if you mean Reel Time or the film cut the scene cuz there is more to the mom scene after the slap. I was actually bummed that they cut the scene at the slap in this reaction cuz I really like the rest of the scene - Monica and her mom never have a kumbaya moment but I do feel like they both finally let it all hang out and were honest with each other. If you’re referring to the film maybe leaving out a scene for time I agree I also like where they left it either way cuz while not a lovey dovey scene I do think they leave it in a REAL place and now that it’s all out there hopefully it’ll lead to a more healthy relationship in the future.
Yesss I’m so happy yall are watching this. I know this movie has a lot of haters but if you view it as a coming of age story or a look into family dynamics it really is wonderful.
Idc about the narrative that has overshadowed this film. Love & Basketball is a romantic film and shows a realistic version of love, it’s never going to be perfect all the time.
THIS. EXACTLY. 💯💯💯 I don’t know what is wrong with people claiming this isn’t a love story simply because there was conflict and Omar’s character messes up and acts like an ass as if most love stories don’t involve conflict and main characters messing up. 🙄🤷🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️😊
@@jalyn947 I also think their mistakes make sense given their circumstances. Both characters were dealing with alot of childhood trauma. The main issue was lack of communication especially from Quincy
I highly recommend ya'll watch "Soul Food" (1997). It stars Vivica A. Fox, Vanessa Williams, and Nia Long. I also recommend "Waiting to Exhale" (1995). Thanks for the reactions!!!
I hated this movie when it was released.😩😅 It’s entertaining, but I hated the way they made Monica so desperate. Quincy was an 🫏 who never apologized. Loved the reaction! 🩷
I don’t think you guys understood Monica. Basketball was always attached to Quincy, meaning she doesn’t have the motivation to play unless he’s in her life. That 1v1 wasn’t only “for his love,” if she lost, which she did, she would’ve quit basketball for good. The whole game was a metaphor for something more significant. This goes over a lot of people’s heads, causing them to ask “why is she fighting for him?” when Monica’s actually fighting for herself. She mentally can’t play without him. Quincy is suppressing his feelings for her. However, the “double or nothing” is a metaphor for “let’s start again.” He wasn’t talking about the game
For some reason I was obsessed with this movie as a little kid. One day I fell at dance class, had to get stitches, and my mom asked me what would make me feel better. I said this movie and ice cream 😂 why this was a 7 year old’s favorite movie I don’t know
Also so weird, Kobe’s also listed on IMDB. He’s listed as uncredited tho so someone may have just added it but Gina’s cameo (the director) is also uncredited so IDK. While Magic & Lisa aren’t listed at all and we actually see them so who knows but maybe Kobe is in a deleted scene or something.
I just screamed!! Y’all so real for this reaction!! It’s litttt! 😝🥳 I will say this isn’t the love story I thought it was tho. Being grown now, I see he started treating her like trash because she had curfew ANDDD dunked on her at the end! She should’ve moved on, but the heart wants what it wants 😭😭😭😭🤦🏽♀️
Lastly, the Internet could never make me hate this film or their love story BUT I can admit Quincy was acting WEIRD in college and should’ve been the main one apologizing later on. He was self destructing and taking it out on her. I get how he may have felt betrayed and like she was putting the game before him especially if he feels like he puts her first. Problem is we never actually see him do that he just says it so it doesn’t hold as much weight. But overall their love story is real especially for 2 young people - it’s not gonna be perfect. Do wish she wasn’t tucking her tail so much or he was at least matching it (if not more than her) instead of just the metaphorical “double or nothing”. Sidenote: I’m in the minority but I actually like the moment he dunks on her 😂!
FYI Isiah Thomas (Pistons) & Spud Webb (won NBA Slam Dunk competition) were under 6ft and had great NBA careers. Quincy's father (Dennis Haysbert) IS the Allstate man " you're in good hands" Excellent actor. Also, Quincy & Monica dated in real life.

First time on your channel. I liked how you looked at things from the basketball perspective. Fun fact not too long ago there's an article that shows Sanaa Lathan ( Monica) at one of the Sparks game. Full circle moment .
Hey guys! I know this is unrelated to this video specifically, but you're my favorite reaction channel, so I wanted to suggest 'Maestro in Blue'. It's the only Greek series on international Netflix at the moment and as a Greek myself I would love to watch a reaction video on it. The 3rd and final season just came out a few days ago! It's my first comment here, so yeah, keep up the good work!
I love this movie and always thought of them as couple goals but now growing up you honestly see that Monica deserved way more than Q and he didn’t treat her like what she was worth Monica was a ride and die female and he took it for granted multiple times they were a toxic relationship and it was on his part mostly she shouldn’t have took much of his bs but since she loved him she did
I used to love this movie but now it annoys me! She was fighting for him but he didn’t lift a finger for her…. Why does she have to “win his heart”… idk…. It just doesn’t sit right with me now as an adult

First time on your channel. I liked how you looked at things from the basketball perspective.
Fun fact not too long ago there's an article that shows Sanaa Lathan ( Monica) at one of the Sparks game. Full circle moment .
Hearing y’all’s commentary on this ridiculous ass movie was everything lmao
QUINCY is 5'10 there were several nba players that were shorte than that but height is a plus. Look up Spud Webb. He won the dunk contest
Please upload never have I ever today 😩
I cant wait for you guys to watch The Players Club!!
They wrote Sanaa’s real life injury into the script.
The 2nd movie with a black cast, i need to buy a lottery ticket
why do folks not approve the love stories like this, same as the notebook and titanic
You guys should watch Juice next!
Yessss...a classic ❤❤❤
Why does this weirdly remind me of twenty-five twenty-one, lol
I could see it. Wish we got a happy ending in that show too. I still want a season 2 cause that ending was so sour lol
I love this movie and always thought of them as couple goals but now growing up you honestly see that Monica deserved way more than Q and he didn’t treat her like what she was worth Monica was a ride and die female and he took it for granted multiple times they were a toxic relationship and it was on his part mostly she shouldn’t have took much of his bs but since she loved him she did
Legendary movie ❤
You have to watch WICKED next!!!
You guys should watch Juice!
i love the 1v1 its my favorite part
I used to love this movie but now it annoys me! She was fighting for him but he didn’t lift a finger for her…. Why does she have to “win his heart”… idk…. It just doesn’t sit right with me now as an adult
Guys, dad probably looks familiar to y'all cuz he's the Allstate man/voice 😂 (Great actor too, but that's likely where you know him).
Edit: y'all figured it out lol
