I’m super old and played original ‘space marine’ epic, back in the day. I own around 500 bases of infantry/vehicles in 8mm scale metal forumware. Very excited about this release. I’ll be buying the rules and playing the game on a 6 by 9 table.
Crazy idea, need 3 tables 😂 Start off with a Battle Fleet Gothic game. It goes planet side with Legions Imperialis Then you go down to the Company/squad battle at 28mm THE MADNESS 😂😂
I have wanted to do this with historical games. replay a high level of a famous battle (division), then section off a part of the replay to a smaller point (company).
Epic veteran from the 90s here: Tactical squads having only a single attack hitting on 5+ may sound weak at first although one has to keep in mind that the vast majority of units in this game don´t have any kind of saving throws. Even cover only granted a modifier to the hit roll and not a cover save as in modern 40K. So one roll in essence confirms a straight kill whereas in 40K you waste time with three steps (hit, wound & saving throw).
Amazing video as always! This game is looking incredible. Seems to grab the best parts from all my favorite wargames. Cant wait to recreate the battle for Istvaan III.
Looking forward to this game. Epic Space Marine and Adeptus Titanicus started my journey into wargaming in the 90s. These days I play mainly historical wargames (American civil war and Napoleonics), but I always said "If they bring back Horus Heresy in epic scale I'll invest". As a historical wargamer I am justifying this with the argument that Horus Heresy is Warhammer historical.
"I'm not super old"...as someone who's first gaming experience of the Warhammer universe was a game of Epic 40k at a RPG/board game con many years ago, that stung a bit!😅
Me and my friends are super stoked for LI. We were all young enough to remember epic but it was gone by the time we were old enough to buy it. Finally i get to live out my dream of huge epic battles!
Sad that the scale is not backwards compatible with the older Epic releases, but it still looks amazing. Now it's just a matter of what legion to run...
The angst! I am a long time gamer and have played 6mm WWII with sherman tanks about 14mm long and infantry a proper 6mm. Also 2mm gaming with little blocks of men. And old epic 40k. So when people talk about tiny cute tanks.. I think actually they look pretty chonky to me. An 8mm leman russ is about as big as 4 6mm tiger tanks stuck together! I appreciate the cute comment generally come from people only used to 40k scale games. P.s. great choice of White scars.
Regarding points, there was a possible leak going around that had point values for units, and in it the box set minus the titans was a little over 1000 points.
I have a 5 x 7 table at my apartment which I plan on using the whole of for this game. Hopefully gives plenty of room for maneuver warfare. Really bummed we got delayed for the starter release, was looking forward to getting my hands on tiny space marines sooner rather than later.
5x4 is not bad, you can use the extra 1x4 on the side for dice, books, etc. There was always that bit of space taken up by that stuff anyways. Might as well move to 5x4.
Enjoyable video. It suffers from the fact you haven't played previous versions, but your enthusiasm makes up for it. One thing you wondered about is movement activations. Back in the early 90s, you moved a unit, then your opponent, then you, and you didn't even know what orders a unit had until it was flipped. Made for a great game. I'm informed by someone with a little bit of inside knowledge that this version is closest to the early 90s version of the game.
Everyone forgets about regular imperial army (less elite than solar, more elite than militia) when they talk about factions, then again even gw/fw seem to have forgotten they exist...
I believe in a previous article they said you can (and should) bring multiple legions of astartes. Perhaps each formation you pick your legion? Have your Imperial firsts taking up your main infantry one, and iron hands as your heavy armour formation
Hmm looks cool. But I'll stick with Dropzone commander for now The fact that everything is brought in by dropship on that game works so well, it makes it so fast and fluid. A game won in the movement phase. If they ever make it epic 40k and include aeldari or nids then I'll reconsider.
Also 5 diverse factions and the tie in space battle BFG equivalent dropfleet commander is a big win for dropverse. Right now legions lacks model and faction diversity. The only thing pulling me towards Legions is the titans though DZC has some very cool behemoth models. I'll follow this game to see how it develops though
I wanted to get into the DZC/DF games, but unfortunately where I love exactly zero people play it. It's a totally cool game though. Hopefully Epic can evolve into something close in feel to them and the way they play.
@@JCDenton3 thankfully it's far cheeper than GWs stuff, so I have 3 armies and lend them out in my wargaming group so I can play games and campaigns, and now others in the group are also getting their own. That's how it always works with smaller games.
I was just recently wondering if everything is alright with you BBG, long time no see. And yes, absolutely hyped! My only wish is they would also go for Battlefleet Gothic revamp!
It is alternate activations. Both of you will alternate moving all your units. Then after all moves have been made, alternate firing all of your units. For instance you do not move and shoot all at once with one activation. That is how I read it.
It's definitely alternating activations within the phases. I wonder if you can attempt to retain initiative to move two detachments in a row as that can be powerful
My question is if this is just a short-term thing from GW. Build up hype, get people to buys lots of models and make them lots of $$$, then give up on the system a year or two later like so many others. It'd be nice if they stuck through with it, but the past gives reason to be cautious.
"I want to see transports make a difference" - have you seen how far infantry can actually move since this? lol Was watching a game the other day - they can move further than most their guns will shoot.
Thanks! Looks really interesting with the detachments of mixed stuff... almost to the point where some units wont be able to be taken by themelves without being part of a core unit? Not sure I like that. Also, transports seem to be lacking here? I kinda envision the Astartes looking a lot more like Armoured Mechanised infantry, especially at this scale
It is going to be I-Move, You-Move, I-Shoot, You-Shoot, etc. As a reference, 40k tried bringing back Apocalypse with a similar turn structure. What I don't know is if they are "simultaneous" activations (even if a unit is shot off the board, they still get to perform their shooting).
Well, I am old enough to have played Epic Space Marine, in all its versions and variations. Been war gaming for 40-odd years, nearly every GW game through dozens of editions and many other gaming systems. Epic Space Marine 2nd edition was (IMO) the best pure war game (rules and play wise) that GW ever produced, it competes as the best war game I've ever played in four decades. It was an amazing free-flowing game with meaningful battlefield objectives that had to be maneuvered to and fought over, generating many an amazing clash over a suddenly critical terrain feature. It appears as though GW has pulled an awful lot of the Epic rules into this version - if so, hell yes, I'm all in. TBH if not and the rules are poor then I'm grabbing the new and gorgeous models and integrating them into the old (community) rules.
New rules out, tried to find you on Discord. No C-beam on Dire Wolf. I Question the Worlord Gatlin Blaster sats between the 2(arm vs carapace) and no Plasma big boom.
Hot takes! Yeah. I really need to do the content creator thing properly. Discord. Patreon. Partnerships. But it all sounds like so much work 😋 Hoping to do a video today if I get the time! 😁
All I have seen so far makes me just feel like NetEa is just better rules. Not that Legion Imperialis seem bad, not at all but the rules that are in the community hands just seem to be better these days than GWs official ones with a few exceptions. I will just continue playing the other Epic rules.
"I'm a grown man and I can find tiny miniatures cute if I want to." - absolute gold

Thank you! Yeah, I'm super excited to see how this one plays out. But in the end. Tiny tanks and too much fun. Can't say no.

I played "Space Marine" circa 1990-91. This is a VERY welcome return to Epic.
"I'm not super old"...as someone who's first gaming experience of the Warhammer universe was a game of Epic 40k at a RPG/board game con many years ago, that stung a bit!😅
Ha ha! The best bit is I was 100% playing 40k when epic was still a thing. I just wasn't wise enough to know it was the clearly superior game!
Me and my friends are super stoked for LI. We were all young enough to remember epic but it was gone by the time we were old enough to buy it. Finally i get to live out my dream of huge epic battles!
Just going to be using 4’x6’. They probably chose 4’x5’ in an effort to make people want to buy the tiles because their mats are not correct.
“…because I’m not super old.”
Ouch!
Where’s my walker? What day is it? Why are those kids tiktoking the snapchats?
Sad that the scale is not backwards compatible with the older Epic releases, but it still looks amazing. Now it's just a matter of what legion to run...
backwards compatibility would mean that people could use old minis, modern GW hate this as it eats into profits
This is finally my chance to run a Vth Legion force, so much easier in epic scale!
Great video, can't wait for the game, already planning Sons of Horus backed up by Legio Mortis. 😮
Adeptus Titanicus is played on a 4x4

Great! Yeah. I was only three at the time so couldn't really dedicate the time to it that I would have liked 😋

Re-read 3, each take it in turns for each detachment.
Did you just call me super old? Lol
It is alternate activations. Both of you will alternate moving all your units. Then after all moves have been made, alternate firing all of your units. For instance you do not move and shoot all at once with one activation. That is how I read it.
That's how I WANT to read it, but not yet willing to 100% confirm that's what they're saying until I see more. Classic GW vagueness.
I started playing GW games with Epic 40K in 1992.
They're not CUTE!! They are adorable.
It's definitely alternating activations within the phases. I wonder if you can attempt to retain initiative to move two detachments in a row as that can be powerful

I'm a grown woman and find those miniatures so cute, so I really hope that the rules are fun and not too convoluted.
SO freaking cute! I'm definitely hopeful for a simpler game. Units only have a few stats is promising. Large scale should mean streamlined play.
Seems to be that, resolving damage is in the end step.
Alternate activation are the best in my opinion that’s one of the reason I can’t go back to 40K …
One again my legions will burn this galaxy and I will rain supreme

Awesome! I'd LOOOOOVE a link if you can find one.
@@blackbriargaming5483 MORE RULES POSTED!
@@marcmiddleton2277 Looks like I need another Imperialis video 😅 And I've just finished my Iron Warriors script too...
@blackbriargaming5483 I keep posting the link where it says the alternating activations and it keeps disappearing
@marcmiddleton2277 thanks RUclips 🙄
Looks like marines can field two tank choices. Ha!
Old Epic was like that. Alternating activation but for entire detachments.

Lol the starter box is 750 points. Cmon bro you know they gotta make it as expensive as possible.
We do get legion rules. Just announced
NICE!!!
Man, if you like movement games... Have you played Kings of War?
If you think movement should be more impactful in a wargame, try Aeronautica Imperialis
so hyped for this!
Wonder what size of base I'll be needing for the tanks, I like a consistent basing scheme across all units in my army.
I don't think tanks are based as standard? But one tank to an infantry base looks about right. No idea what they are yet. Maybe 32mm?
I find it discouraging they are going only heresy as a 40K variant or even adding known Xenos in 30k would be relevant
