What it is REALLY like to LIVE AT SEA | 950nm and 7 days between Antigua and Bermuda -

  • In 2016, when Ryan and I decided to move onboard a sailboat to sail the World, we had no idea what it was like to actually live at sea. Was it boring? Dangerous? Exciting? How do you eat and how do you sleep? How is seasickness and how much do you motor?
These days, long ocean passages are part of our routine, and while we sail 950 nautical miles between Antigua and Bermuda, we take you through our offshore routine, and compare what we used to do when we were noobs to how we sail now.
Offshore sailing is the best, and we hope this gives you a bit of ocean envy!

Hey folks , new subscriber. So far I am on video #14 but I had to pop in and say hello and thank you for sharing your life aboard with us :). As a side note to you Sophie, I flew in the AF like Ryan and I used to get violently, debelitatingly motion sick by just thinking about a car trip. When I went through training it was either overcome it or pick a different job. Ryan Mentioned the Bárány chair. It worked for me! For 5 days I would get spun 3 times in the chair, each time until I threw up, small break, then spin again. It was hell but now for over 10years I have been completely cured. I can handle any turbulance and enjoy any activity without the slightest feeling of upset. All of the things I had to do before like drinking the correct liquids, staring at the horizon when possible, force feeding myself, all superflous now.

This passage from Antigua to Bermuda seemed to be “comfortable” compared to your passage last year from Bonaire to Bermuda.
I remember the terrible sea states that you encountered going through the Mona Passage, a strait that separates the islands of Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico and connects the Atlantic Ocean to the Caribbean Sea. As you mentioned in that video, it is one of the most difficult passages in the Caribbean. It is fraught with variable tidal currents created by the large islands on either side of it, and by sand banks that extend out for many miles from both coasts.
Happy you took an easier route this year!
PS - I think Francis flew overhead at my home in early July but he didn’t land - No solar panels! 😁

Hahaha! Francis eventually left us after sailing about 600nm onboard. Ryan was getting tired of the poop on the panels :p (can't blame him...)

if it's so miserable, why would you go out of your way to live on a boat? it seems like the costs don't outweigh the benefits

In all fairness, I could also have cut the part when I say when this takes place, and no one would have been the wiser 🤷🏻‍♀️😊

Brian why would she even consider the bird is an equation? You understand the bird can just swim in the water and can actually sleep in the water? Please don't ever endanger yourself with reefing in regards to the consideration of a bird it's just bad salmanship. If you're afraid the bird may get caught in the rigging to scare the bird off the boat then douse your reefs. Sorry guys love you guys take care be safe

I'm not sure that that's a seagull I think it's probably a booby and the first place is going to want to land is at the top your Mast which will destroy and tear up all your wind vane information your anemometers you don't know how fast the wind is it's just a bad bad habit to let these birds order and hang around on your boat it's just bad I'm sorry. I'm speaking from over a hundred thousand miles of sailing you don't want these birds on your boat. So good luck guys love you guys take care be safe

I presume only that you refer to Francis as the bird that is spending all of its days and nights sitting on your deck? I guess if you like cleaning up that type of crap you would permit it. That bird is fully capable of bobbing around in the ocean like it has done for tens of thousands of years why you would let it just sit on your deck I don't get it. It's not even good luck thanks love you guys take care be safe get the birds off your deck unless you like cleaning up that type of crap
