- Welcome to Episode #100!!! 🥳
In 2020, we couldn't sail more than a couple of hundred nautical miles, and were really looking forward to an ocean passage. This one certainly had a few surprises in store for us!
Hope you enjoy the videos of our crossing to the Azores, and if you do, don't forget to subscribe! ;)

Thank you to St. Paul de Vence for the music! I've really enjoyed illustrating the footage of our crossing with Ben's beautiful music, and I hope you enjoy it as well :) You can listen to St- Paul de Vence on Spotify at: open.spotify.com/artist/6Gn9h2lBikJ7YoBO4OsE29?si=e27fce600e8b4db4
Episode #100, congrats for the milestone!!!
Glad you enjoyed yourselves in Bermuda. Fair winds and smooth seas. Have a couple of bottles of Goslings in my line of sight right now. More of a Dark & Stormy guy vs Rum Swizzle.
Sophie, randomly came across your channel and found myself binging on various episodes. I find a wonderful diverse vlog that is a mix of good sailing info and great filming of what passage making really looks like. But what I find most appealing is your sense of humor, solid yummy chef skills that I can use on land to make life better and best of all, the authenticity of a creative soul who is very brave, compassionate and human. Thank you for sharing your life, dreams, and weather obstacles, not just on the ocean but in an ever increasing chaotic environmental and political climate. New subscriber. 👍
Oh Beverly, this comment absolutely made my day!!! 😍😍😍 Thank you for your lovely message and welcome to the family!
Always nice to follow your adventures. Do noise cancelling headphones solve the engine noise problem?
So back to Switzerland, or Sweden ( I can't remember), sell the boat and back to landlubber life? You've had your little life adventure.
Not at all! We are crossing back West in January. We just felt for an added 7000 nautical miles of sailing to escape hurricane season :p
@@RyanSophieSailing Goodo, just asking. A lot just do it for a couple of years and then go back to land life.
Sophie, with your adorable personality, cute facial expressions, and reassuring smile, your narration is a true joy to watch and listen too.
Sophie makes me laugh every time. I love watching your videos!
Sophie...this series of sailing videos has me hooked on you and your leadership abilities. What a treat to go sailing with someone like you. This series of videos are really fun to watch. Thank you. And good wishes and fair winds.
Thanks so much Robert, it mean a lot to me to hear that :)
Keep on beeing the fun and enjoyable crew you are! And Ryan, you are doing GOOD! It is really a far cry from the... lets just say, previous. You are a sweetheart, and just be good to yourself.
😍😃
The other thing is, I love reading your comment section-it makes me remember that there are good people, ordinary people, paying attention, daring to be vulnerable, doing extraordinary things. Your commenting followers here really DO feel like family. It reminds me that there are people who love you even when you’re seasick, anxious, scared, or just grumpy-and those people are your REAL family.
Sophie's poker face accompanied by the Washing Machine Waltz was an absolute hoot! Congrats on 100 episodes. Fair winds and following seas.
Thanks Bill!! :D
ryan is a sook he spoils this site ,,always negartive with him ,,, sophie is the only reason i watch
A very enjoyable episode. I'm always amazed by the tech stuff available now. Three of us sailed an old wooden nicholson from St Maartens to the UK in '98. The skipper bought a SSB receiver in St Maartens. We tuned into Herbie, known as southbound 2, twice a day. We could listen as he talked to the other boats which were in our vicinity. It was very useful. He advised people that there were some strong winds above 32N, if my memory serves me well. Anyway, we stayed south of that until we could run up to Horta. We went into Horta just as a front was coming in. A guy single handing a few hours astern of us decided to stay out for the night, when we met him he said it got quite exciting. This September I sailed a boat back from Faro to the Bristol Channel. We had a fair bit of techie stuff on board. Didn't stop us having to beat for 3 or 4 days or having to motor for 3 days. Funny, when your beating you wouldn't mind having to do a bit of motoring and, when your motoring, you wouldn't mind a bit of wind, even if it was on the nose! Motoring is a bit tedious. Anyway, very good, I'll watch more.
The eye's say it all....I do think it's more Sophie than Ryan! still enjoy the rock and roll. xx
From the "Help Me Understand And Teach Me" files...
From the drone footage it was clear you had the main up but no jib in light wind.... Why? Was it because of the drone footage (which was amazing!) or for some other reason?
Thanks for sharing so much from your voyage. Rooting for y'all and looking forward to seeing more of the passage.
I have to say you guys are so amazing and Sophie your sense of humour is so natural and funny. Love you guys and I'm looking forward to next week. Happy sailing and stay safe
I like Sophie's cooking segments. My wife has tried to make a couple of them..🙂
Congratulations BTW on your #100th official episode. Commenting for the RUclips algorithm....hope it helps...
Just bloody brilliant and imho the best running serial on RUclips atm!!!!! Thank you. Sophie, you have a future as a presenter.
Thanks so much Jeff!!! :D
Not exactly sure why you have crewmember... Don't ever see her at the helm, cooking, or doing much of anything. I know I'm a year behind in watching, but it's all in the editing. I'm still watching and catching up...
The issue with your iridium go could the lithium battery. It won't work if the battery overheats from continuous charging. See the The O'Kelly's
videos about theirs... Just a guest... ruclips.net/video/8jQFArGAQ2Y/видео.html
I love that ya'll spent almost a month in Bermuda and I didn't hear a pip about a "dark and stormy". Nevermind that rum swizzle certainly wasn't invented within 1000 km of Bermuda, at least it's a real cocktail and not just cheap crappy rum hidden in a sugary soda.
Hi guys all you are doing superb. I am from India. I watch your uploads. Which sail boat ⛵ do you use for circumnavigation? Do reply!
Sophie tighten up your harness!!! Loose harnesses more likely to get caught up in rigging, also if your not wearing the crotch strap then you can fall out the bottom.
Becoming integrated into the rigging (for example sprinkler pole between you and your jacket, or fast snap shackle (on anchor chain extension) by accident is not fun. The other danger is having the jacket slide over your head if your trying to recover but grabbing a line from manoverboard.
Lekker man lekker
I'm confused by your videos. Where are you heading to now and when was the video shot? Somewhere along the way I got lost. Have a great time Wherever You Are👍
Your husband needs Smetca for his symptoms. Works perfect every time.
Honest, try it.
Sophie, you are soooo good at this vlog thing! I loved Ryan’s candor. Loved hearing the sea and wind and boat sounds. Loved the way you framed the changing light-just really, really good.
When I was a child we went half way across the Pacific Ocean in Military transport ships following our fathers duty stations from one island to another. I wasn't allowed on deck being a very young child so I became comfortable with the constant drone of the ships engines. Made me sleep like a baby...I imagine it's a bit different being next to one running constantly and wishing for a breeze to sail on. Then you get that breeze and it gets roley LOL !!
The tractor will seriously drive you insane, hahaha! But yeah, wind and waves pick up and now your bed becomes a shaker :p Can't win! :D
WOW!
Ryan on a boat with rum swizzle Sophie….😂
Funny thing about travel anxiety and the emotions of a passage. For me, the worst part is on the 1st night watch. That’s when the doubts creep in and I start asking myself why I do this. It takes 12-24 hours to get over that phase and get into rhythm. Be the end, I do t want to get off the boat
Thanks for sharing! I think that anxiety is very normal when you operate a boat on the open ocean. The stakes are high!
Loved the drone shots. I assume Ryan was the pilot because @15:50 the boat clown showed up for a few moments. Great editing Sophie, I truly appreciate the effort and time you put into these. :-) PS GREAT meal, I doubt anybody loses weight when you're in the galley.
I have done this same trip, I went upto the 39 degrees and went looking for badish weather, got into the Azores in 2 weeks, great trip you will enjoy the Azores and will not want to leave.
touché to all the comments below. My much 💘 channel.
Sophie your random face screwing up moments are so so funny love your channel
Euw! Reminds me of Murphy’s Law: When things start off Good, It won’t Last; When things start off Bad, It gets Worse☹️ Continue to Stay Safe & Enjoy😎
All in all, this was a really good passage with just the right level of adventure to keep it interesting ;)
Love how you keep yourself entertained in the cockpit, LOL
What rpm to run at ? Motoring? Diesel mileage?
pasta and rice in the same dish!?!?!??!?!??!?!?!
Lol “The sun setting in our butts“.
In German we say "the sun is shining out of someone's butt" if someone is notoriously happy. That would be you, Sophie! :D
Or the butt is referred to as the place where the sun never shines. Otoh ... if you've ever been to a french plage ...
See: You inspire me to drunken rambling without rum swizzle.
haha this made me lol, Im Flemish, but I recognize those referrals :)
We say pretty much the same thing in US English about the sun shining out of someone's [butt]. Normally with a great deal of sarcasm.
HAHAHA! I had never heard of "the sun shining out of someone's butt", but I already want to use it. What a great addition to my vocabulary 😂
@@RyanSophieSailing It sure is :-)
Worth watching for Sophie's face when the boat heels over a bit too far 😄
Great drone videos, amazing how calm the water looked.
That's a beautiful boat.. how much does something like that cost?
We payed about 80K€ for her in 2016, and added about 30K of equipment over the years. We like her a lot :)
Sophie.. you really need a cataraman...🙈😆😆😆
I would love one, but Polar Seal is a sweet boat in the meantime :)
Ha, ha, ha......
Congratulations on 100th episode, I discovered this channel after Kiel canal episode and it has been a great experience since.
Thank you so much Sciolist!!! It’s great having you around for the ride ☺️
Great video !
This is so funny! 😂
👍👍👍👍👍
✨💯✨👍
:)
That was fun. Let's back up a few miles and do it again. GREAT Video.
Awesome! So glad you liked it! :D
A thumb down for how you are attaching your live west/PFD. Evenen when you say you will wear it on the long trip allways: Itwaont help you^. ou would slip out of it. Make it more thight. Rest of the Video is lovely. Yust in concern of your life. Harry
What?! No... Our PFDs are tightened according to what we wear, and the crotch straps are always on. We know how to wear our PFDs, but thanks for the concern. Maybe you want to go put some thumbs down to the 90% of sailors on RUclips that don't even bother wearing one?
@@RyanSophieSailing My dear Rian and Sophie. Not like you showed in the commented YT-Video. Well it's your life. I am an RYA instructor. Showing bad practice in YT is not a good idea. fair winds nd following seas Harry
@@haraldweidlich2013 at what point? Cause I rewatched that video and you can’t really see much. If our lifejackets were blatantly loose, or open, or the crotch straps were hanging on the sides, I’d take the “showing bad practice on RUclips”. But i don’t think anyone will be watching this video to set their standard for how loose or tight a pfd should be 🧐
Hurry up I want the next EPISODE
It's already out on Patreon! (Patrons are three to four episodes ahead of time). If you really can't wait, you can join for 2$ a month (by joining the lowest tier and putting a limit at 1 video a month) and you can cancel anytime! Yes, this is a shameless plug, but who knows, maybe you didn't know!
Ahhhh - We end on the “Cliff Hanger” - The Iridium Go failure. Mrs. Ellison will probably skip your next episode 😁
Beautiful sunsets!
Hey Sophie. So how is the Weather where your at ? And are you guys close to or are you going by the canary Islands? Have you heard anything about the situation there?
We are currently in Lanzarote where we are staging for our crossing back, and the weather here is great :) We are far East from La Palma where the volcano is erupting, so not seeing anything. Thought the marina and anchorage are CROWDED with boats waiting to do the crossing. Quite exceptional!
Thanks, hope you have a great day and keep safe and may you have a fair winds on the rest of your travels. You guys stay safe, great video btw 👍.
Pour you! The wind is never perfect for the stomachs! Lol
@6:50 Car carrier headed to America with European cars... .. ;)
Rhum swizzle in the fridge...loll good idea for a while , another nice video Wow!!! the drone shot @10:14 spectacular!!!! congrats for #💯 you are amazing , wish you fair winds and safe sailing, Polar Seal❤❤❤👍
Thank you Nicholas!!! :D #swizzleforever
Sophie is the best of all! Tks and regards
Sophie, "if for the first time the sun is setting in our butts", where do the stars go? What's more, is there room for the moon? And where does Einstein's Theory of Relativity fit in? :¬) Webhead USA
Hahahaha :D
The washing machine actually looked like phoney waves behind you. It looks like you stomach held in. Thanks for sharing.
We had a crazy pattern of Gulf stream currents in the Northern Atlantic as we crossed, hence the "washing machine" :p I had never seen this in the middle of the ocean!
Sargo is a cool boat, garcia passoa if i’m not mistaken, the predecessor of your favorite boat the garcia exploration. Anyway, great vlog again!
Yep! Sargo is a really cool boat and it did the same passage we did a lot faster. Hopefully one day, we can sail a Garcia too!
Don't waves ever crash over the stern of your boat?? The seats are right at the back of the boat but they always seem dry. And not washed overboard.
We've never had that happen actually. But sometimes they come slamming on the side and sneakely slide under the walls of our enclosure :p
Congrats on the 100th.
Nice job.
Happy 💯!
there were birds - and you didn't catch fish???
We were honestly a little too tired to start fishing yet! :/
Does anybody else click like before watching the video, knowing it will be great?
😀😀😀❤❤❤
SOP in my house. Never, ever have I been disappointed. This episode ranks up there with their best I'm looking forward to the rest of 'em
I absolutely click the like button at the start. :¬) Webhead USA
omg i laughed n laughed..the shizzle swizzle
I miss the Swizzle. Need to mix some soon!!!!
Just wondering how the washing machine is going as we are thinking of getting one. Keep up the good work.
It is amazing. I'm actually about to put a load as I am writing this. Absolutely life changing!
I shall put one on the boat. Thanks Sophie
This can be a good sailing channel if sophie’s face does not fill up the screen so much of the time. She could have her own show elsewhere, perhaps..
Aaah it's my bad really. I'll rename the channel to "Sophie on a boat and Ryan sometimes talking to the camera". I need to learn to create the right expectations! 😂
@@RyanSophieSailing Hahaha best face on the ocean! Cant wait to see you!
entertaining have fun be safe...
One hundreeed... congratsssss!!
Yeaaay!! Thanks! :D
