    Well done Sophie, that was full of real life sailing and u did a great job , Ryan isn't looking real well, perhaps his solo sail really burnt him out hope he gets that smile and energy back soon. Thanks for sharing 🇦🇺🌈🌞

    Tip: Put a couple of shackles chain between the anchor and the swivel. This prevents breaking the swivel on the achor shaft. They are not designed for so match force. Have great sailing and always 4 inch water under the keel.

      Surprised me, too, almost looked like a monohull!
      But, with cross waves, the two hulls may go dancing, if the wavelength "fits" the beam.

    • @RyanSophieSailing
      @RyanSophieSailing  2 года назад +2

      Honestly, the conditions were REALLY harsh… rounding up an island is never a smooth experience, no matter if you’re on a mono or a cat.

    • @Tomm9y
      @Tomm9y 2 года назад +3

      Catamarans can be very uncomfortable in certain conditions. When rounding an island/headland, it's always wise to stay further offshore and avoid any clash between wind/swell/current/shallows/changes in the sea floor. When climbing a mountain on an island I have sometimes noticed a zone 1/2 mile wide where the water is far more turbulent.

    I found that you should put a few chain links between the anchor and swivel. The swivel isn't designed to take sideways tension ( as it can if swivel is attached directly to anchor.

    Glad to see your still getting it, watched M Falcon install some of Ryan's batteries yesterday without a hitch, so great Engineering. Back in 1975 the Captain & his wife bought me a fine meal at a fine restaurant in English harbor. As a peon suckered me in to signing up for one more year. Am pretty smart, a year later in Bermuda realized we were not going through the Panama canal & quit, that Engine room job.

    I have never seen the point of anchor swivels? All they do as you correctly pointed out, is add a potential point of failure to the anchoring system and provide little or no benefits in return. If you have an anchor swivel, I strongly recommend that you remove it and replace it with the appropriately sized bow shackle installed the right way. If you really must use a swivel, do not connect it directly to the anchor, instead use a short length of chain between the anchor and the swivel.

    I really wanted more about the anchor chain breaking. From what I heard, it wasn't under excess load (ie, wasn't holding u in place in a gale on a lee shore) - it was under normal steady operating load, and no shock loads. Did u find iether pc of the brocken chain-link? Was the chain a cheap imported brand from China - or from proof-tested stock? How old was it? So many questions. For me, if that chain broke under 'normal' use, there could be no thought of it ever being put back on the boat. However expensive chain is, it's the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy ...

  • @stephenburnage7687
    @stephenburnage7687 2 года назад +3

    That looks a good anchor (for that size of boat). As to the chain, it looks like 5/16" or 3/8" galvanized, which should be good, for what were calm conditions. Would ask where they bought their chain? It should ideally be stamped "HS" (high strength). Have heard of some very inferior, cheap Chinese chain getting put on boats with unfortunate consequences. This could have led to the loss of the entire boat so count yourselves very fortunate.

      When getting anchor chain for my last boat boughtnin the USA, tbh, I was not At All Impressed with any of the Chain or Galvanising I Saw in any of the Chandlers, withbAll,of it looking like Cheap, Weak Chinese Crap. so I started looking for American Chain Suppliers with Anerican Steel and Anerican Galvanising, and found some Certified very high quality From a Trucking Suppliers, so ordered enough for an all chain rode. When it was delivered, its very high quality and excellent Galvanising was so good, the Boatyard asked ne for details of the supplier. It worked a charm with the strains of powerful Tornadoes. 👍🙂🇬🇧🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🇺🇲

There's very good Italian Chain, which is one among only a few makers that are fit for purpose. watch the Galvanising of chain abd anchor, and get them regalvanised before they start rusting, which is not that expensive, and you are set up for more reliable years of use.
