Thank you I'm in the process of becoming a full time live aboard sailor, and your video has made me think about the quality of life and what is needed on my boat looking for a 37.5 to 42 ft 2 cabins 2 head layout. Thank You once again
I used to work downtown and when the weather was nice I would walk along the harbor. If you're still in Boston, do yourselves a HUGE favor and go to the falafel king in downtown and get a falafel wrap or some shwarma. Delicious!
Great video. This really showcases the problem solving skills needed by owners - AND, how well a 40 ft. Beneteau holds up to full-time live aboard life!
Based on the color of your nail polish and the fact that the bird at time 37:25 is facing west into the prevailing winds, I would say that you’re on Long Wharf in Boston Harbor. Clever you mixed in some footage from NS.
Fresh water Rinse layup and Emergency Bilge Pump. On Starlight 1989 Beneteau Oceanis 350 has a Volvo Penta engine M2003 28hp anyway I was the second owner, so after I purchased the boat I was doing the shakedown cruise and ran the engine for about an hour and the overheated alarm went off , could not find a problem, cutting too the chase lots of growth and calcification of the tubes in the heat exchanger. Had too take the entire unit clean it and put it back, never wanted to do that again figured was not the use rather the extended, layup with saltwater, also the corrosion factor of the elbow, had to replace that. So as a solution I cam up with this manifold I constructed with brass and bronze fittings and ball valves for each connection, from the thru hull , to the manifold, ball on the thru hull and on the manifold did the same at the on end valve to the sea strainer to the engine, next thru hull, pressure fresh water, and at the other end again valve to a run to the bilge. This allows me to turn on the fresh water, backwash the thru hull, then shutoff and run the engine for 2 minutes on fresh water before shutting down the engine for the night or an extended time. It also in the final configuration allows me to bring to bear as an emergency pump, on my main bilge the engine, if there is a major leak in the boat that bilge pumps cannot handle for whatever reason, (lightning strikes) etc. I often use the fresh water system when she is on the hard, and I need to run the engine, like changing oil, etc. I have 100 gallons of water on Starlight, you should see the looks I get in the yard with no hose, on the hard, yet engine running and water from the exhaust and prop shaft running out. In 20 years have not had any overheating issues or had to deal with the heat exchanger or the elbow, which is notorious on Volvos.. Also a sea water strainer and fresh water source rinse for the head, works great in the hot summer fresh water makes a big difference in your black water tank.
Polar Seal is an amazing boat. The definition of 'An Amazing Boat;: Is it a much better boat than it was brand new? And Would you rather have the new model of your boat, or your boat? Polar Seal aces these. (I sailed three days on a Jeanneau 40 your Beneteau's sibling. Terrific, but the galley needed more space, and the engine was too loud. You've solved both of these) The only thing I have on my boat that Polar Seal might like is I made an exhaust fan for my galley. (I have a Hunter 456 Passage). I had a spare 'window' (side light) that I used as a pattern for 8mm luan plywood. I copied everything, all the little fingers for the latches and the hinges. I installed the fan at an angle. On the sides of the triangle blocks I added a couple pieces to use as handles.. The handles were the final piece of the puzzle. Very easy to use. It 'plugs' into the open (side) hatch without any need for latches. Vents all the burned propane and cooking smells. Easy to remove.
Thanks so much for the updated tour and your kind generosity in sharing your clever modifications and ideas! We have a Beneteau 373 and many of your ideas are directly applicable to our boat so I hope you don't mind if we borrow some!
I thoroughly enjoyed that tour. Thanks, and will be watching that quite a few times to suck out all of the details. I am in agreement with all of the things you have done, and there are a few i will copy. One item though, I installed the largest video screen that would fit, and suggest you reconsider the size. So I have a 48 inch display, only because the 55 inch wouldn’t fit, but that might fit on Polar Seal. There is an 8K 55 inch screen that is just 12mm thick and can mount right on the wall. The big screen acts as a kind of mirror when not in use and makes the boat seem larger. When in use it is a full home theatre and a far better experience than the small screen. Also the large screen is my computer monitor when I am doing CAD Design work. I kept the smaller 12 V Majestic screen in place on the other side of the Salon, A, because it is 12 Volt and a good backup when at sea, and B, because I quite regularly am designing on the big screen while having a video running on the other. Yes, I live alone. The first improvement I did on this boat was the electric Head. 1000% agree. And am looking for a design for the sanitary waste. Very big issue (but can’t talk about it). Totally love your washer dryer, and would have one but found them unavailable. I get by with a top loader that hides away under a Salon seat cushion, and sits right down on top of the keel. No where near as good as yours, but I love it anyway……until there is a better one. One of the best gadgets I have is a nutrition bullet. I love this and do so much with it. My most recent gizmo is an air fryer. Good because it gives me some of the function of a microwave, a device that just will not fit on this boat. Another thing that i have been pondering is if i can make a deep sink become a dishwasher. A dishwasher is nothing more than a box with a water heater, pump and spray nozzle,……and a door. I think that it can be done. A sink with dishwasher functionality. I have a hydronic water heater aboard and do all of heat the space, heat the water, and dry the wet head after a shower. I could also have the dishwasher function running so the same diesel fuel used in the Hydronic does 4 functions at once. I have solar water heating (an addition to the solar panels) soon to be fitted making the use of diesel less necessary.
Your raymarine GPS location tell us you are at 42°21'30.7"N 71°02'55.6"W. How do you fly your asymmetric? Did I spot a removable bowsprit or was that a pole?
Sweet Tour! Thank You very much! That looks like the US Courthouse in Boston off of your port quarter. That would place you at the piers near the Boston Harbor Hotel ⛵🧭 I'll be tacking through your playlist this winter.
Looks like you are in Halifax as you film this video... a city that has changed a lot since I've been there in a 29 foot sloop in... 1987 ! It was before GPS and light weight radars, and we had to navigate in the fog (this doesn't seem to have changed! ) by dead reckoning, with a compass, a Seafarer 3 Sea Depth Echo Sounder, a «Walker's Ship Log» and a Radio Direction Finder. A little scary in some occasions but it worked, since we came with that equipoement all the way from Montreal, QC, to Twillingate, NL, and then south to Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, Cape Breton, South East shore of Nova Scotia, Mount Desert Island, Camden, Gloucester and, finally, Cape Cod Canal... without any major problem ! Hope you'll have today as much fun as we had 35 years ago in this wonderfull region !
Congrats for your nomination. We really like the peaceful flow of your episodes. We will not be at the boat show since we are likely to head from Banderas Bay to the Fench Poly later this winter. Have fun and good luck!
Forgive me for asking but If you don't flush toilet paper, where do you put it? I would assume that has the potential of getting a little stinky. Did you add the two fridge electrical panels in the kitchen to run them independently or did the boat come with that?
Nice battery setup. I see some people sticking with AGM for a starter and then charging a LiFePO4 house bank via a DC:DC charger. Is that lithium starter your 4th backup battery, or are you configured as 3 house, 1 house backup, 1 starter (all lithium)? If you don't allow toilet paper to be flushed, what do you do with the paper? Washing machine is nice.
11:20, I think, it's more structural, than a safety. Big solid integrated boxes make the entire boat stiffer. If it would have a removable lid, it will be flimsy. However, I think, the lids can be a bit bigger, but it should have a solid glued-on top with holes, not removable top.
3 time segments for intro, anchor, & sail/wardrobe. ~3 mins Spray hood & bimini, 33 mins! 🤣 (I see the links to the proper segments in the description btw)
I had started to create those chapters and timestamps based on the ad-free version of this video on Patreon, and needless to say, the timing did NOT align 😂
U are both very talented, special people and, what uv done for Polar Seal is simply awesome, and this is the best advertisement of sale. I get the distinct feeling there will be a new Polar Seal in the near future. Whoever buys this very safe Blue Water Vessel, will be extremely content, happy and I will say Lucky Sailors. Thanks Sophie, Ryan for the thorough, honest and indepth tour. Goodluck much love, hugs for Barnicle. 🐶🇦🇺🏳️🌈
Excellent tour, thank you. Enjoyed your upgrades to the elecrical system. With your high output alternator, do you have problems with heat reducing the effectiveness of charging?
Video is Boston. Currently looks like you guys might be off the coast of NJ. Possibly AC. If so, let me know. I'm just down the road. I'll buy you guys dinner!
Hi Sophie, I'm tempted to remove our fridge and just max out the galley with large freezer. Obviously that requires different planning for stocking food, like batch cooking and freezing, and I can always put drinks in the freezer for 20 mins if I want something cooled. Just wondering if you have any insight on your freezer use and energy consumption? Any opinions on freezers? Thanks.
And there is the polar bear on the Seti to keep Barnacle company when Barnacle's humans are not aboard. Which reminds me, I have towels in the dryer! By for now, :¬) Webhead USA
Ryan, once I dropped a wrench on a batterie in a truck. Got a nice firework and melted metal. Is the plus on the starter batterie covered…? ;-) A great boat and a very interesting video! Thanks a lot! Georg
Our PM thinks we can convert our whole country to solar for our primary power source. With your short experience in the "summer" in Canada what do you think?
Hey guys! great video! Leo here, new to the channel, I arrived here ´cos I am researching on opinions on buying a Beneteau Oceanis 44 CC (1999-2001-ish) to live and sail for some years with my wife. Any opinions on that boat? Thanks so much!
Hi this is Ginger again. Can you turn the caption on? I am still so deaf and it is hard to read Ryan’s lips on the bow. Shadow effects killed it. Thanks Sophie.
So who trouble shoots the macerator of yon fancy toilet, the owneress or the maintancer? Just wondering, why not a composting toilet? Would that not removed all the holding tank hardware and plumbing?
Hello Sophie and Ryan, excuse, ladys first. Please could you tell me how long the bench in the cockpit is? Could you sleep outside or will it painfull? Greats from Berlin in Germany, I love your channel, Norman

It makes some noise (unavoidable with a macerator) but I really don’t find it bad at all. I lack comparison points, but others who’ve used it have told me it’s nothing compared to theirs.
Excellent tour! It's nice to see a lot of the upgrades all in one episode.
Ryan - that transition … chefs kiss.
Thank you I'm in the process of becoming a full time live aboard sailor, and your video has made me think about the quality of life and what is needed on my boat looking for a 37.5 to 42 ft 2 cabins 2 head layout. Thank You once again

P.S. 30 liters per load? That can't be right. 30 kilos of water to wash 6 kilos of laundry?
Great video. This really showcases the problem solving skills needed by owners - AND, how well a 40 ft. Beneteau holds up to full-time live aboard life!
Based on the color of your nail polish and the fact that the bird at time 37:25 is facing west into the prevailing winds, I would say that you’re on Long Wharf in Boston Harbor. Clever you mixed in some footage from NS.
Always love updated boat tour! You guys are the best in the nitty gritty details we’re looking for! 🎉😊❤

Boston, MA aquarium on the water and the new federal court house in the background
Polar Seal is beautiful... all of the upgrades are spot on.... now all you need is a dishwasher!!!!!!!!....
I know right 😆😆😆 Ryan actually studied the question for a while, but there truly is no space for one. But next boat…. There WILL be a dishwasher
Glad you did this video. I really enjoyed the full walk through!
Great tour very nice to see how you keep your boat livable
Your raymarine GPS location tell us you are at 42°21'30.7"N 71°02'55.6"W.
How do you fly your asymmetric? Did I spot a removable bowsprit or was that a pole?
Super! Thx for sharing. Perfect timing as we are getting our 419 Jeanneau SO ready for the Bahamas
Great ship, I look forward to the undoubtedly unprecedented adventures you will experience.
Awesome !! Serious adventure . Wow
Great work on the upgrades thanks for sharing I saw some great ideas for our boat to do over our first wintering season.

Boston is a nice town. Is it still allowed throw used tea bags in the harbor?
Yes I have actually gone out of my way to litter just once and it was only one tea bag just so I can say I did it
Awesome video, thank you!
Fantastic video, thank you very much Fairwinds ⛵️
Sophie, you are funny, witty, intelligent, glamour and beautiful. My new heroine!
Congrats for your nomination. We really like the peaceful flow of your episodes. We will not be at the boat show since we are likely to head from Banderas Bay to the Fench Poly later this winter. Have fun and good luck!
Sounds amazing! What nomination? 😅
Yep you got me there!! My bad! But then you know I watch your channel ;)
Hi. My Beneteau Oceanis 40 (same as the wonderful Ryan & Sophie's) is for sale in the UK (River Hamble). Get in touch if interested.
the sprayhood/bimini is really good. great equiptment upgrades. definately a boat to circumnavigate.
It’s seriously been a godsend through our entire adventure! Especially this year when we needed a little extra protection from the elements ☺️
Very good boat tour. Thank you.
Ryan geeking out about his Covid add projects is everything 😊😂 Great vid guys x
This is Boston!
ding ding ding! :)
We're definitely drawing inspiration from this! Talk about it in a year! 😊

The spice rack does look good...that washer dryer ....you would think tha😂t would be mandatory factory equipment nowadays...

Curious about your floodlight remote control setup. What did you use?

You're in Annapolis for the Boat Show.
Excellent tour, thank you. Enjoyed your upgrades to the elecrical system. With your high output alternator, do you have problems with heat reducing the effectiveness of charging?
Omg... "a place where vegetables went to die" lol. I love it! Sophie, you have an absolute way with words, don't ever change.
Video is Boston. Currently looks like you guys might be off the coast of NJ. Possibly AC. If so, let me know. I'm just down the road. I'll buy you guys dinner!

The iridium phone is also good for finding out how to cook frozen mashed potatoes.
I was looking for the video when you renovated the tabletop, but could not fint it. Anywhere I can find it?
sll your hard work has payed of hope you have more down time just for you 😀a fan shayne
Great one, thanks a lot!

W0W! what a Pad! You guys have an Awesome self sufficient floating Pad!! Ha! Thanx for giving us a peek inside!!
Nice episode, Sophie!
In the the salon section, I was jumping up and down, saying I got that book......and it is sitting right next to me......
Question, are you able to use the washing machine while sailing, heeling and rocking?
Unfortunately not
Hey guys! great video! Leo here, new to the channel, I arrived here ´cos I am researching on opinions on buying a Beneteau Oceanis 44 CC (1999-2001-ish) to live and sail for some years with my wife. Any opinions on that boat? Thanks so much!
Wow, Awesome bout tour. How did you guys fair with tropical storm Lee?
The washer dryer is $99 from many outlets
Hi this is Ginger again. Can you turn the caption on? I am still so deaf and it is hard to read Ryan’s lips on the bow. Shadow effects killed it. Thanks Sophie.
Never mind. The caption signal appeared later after Sophie started talking about the dinghy. Please ignore my request. Have a great week!!!!
love you guys. Cool Episode.
So who trouble shoots the macerator of yon fancy toilet, the owneress or the maintancer?
Just wondering, why not a composting toilet? Would that not removed all the holding tank hardware and plumbing?
😃👍👍👍❤ really nice "work" on a 40 foot boat. Beneteau Oceanis 60 somewhere in the distant future?
I have a feeling it has been very windy there for the last few days.
Hello Sophie and Ryan, excuse, ladys first. Please could you tell me how long the bench in the cockpit is? Could you sleep outside or will it painfull? Greats from Berlin in Germany, I love your channel, Norman
Hi, would you able to share how to rig your Takacat to hoist it? Thanks much.
Q: Whenever you cross the Atlantic does starling let you swap zones, how does that work?
Did you reinforce the standing rigging at all?
Amazing video!
Great video! Which lapel microphone is this one you guys use?
Why didnt you get the Laveo dry flush?
Funny you can hear the seals so clearly across the harbor like that.
Great video
I have a question about your dinghy. Do you suffer not being able to plane with two person aboard?
Hey you’re at my home. Go Bruins
So Ryan how do you charge now. Is that where the w500 comes into play
Where is the "safe space" Ryan cries in?
HAHAHA - - I wonder if he learned how to heat up frozen mash potatoes.
I watched the episode to the end, weird but true! Sophie where is the Airfryer?
If I want a technical insight or layout, about a boat.... I'll ask Sophie!
For Ryan, I ask how to make a phone call.... :D
Just kidding huh!
Good vlog!
Hi guys. Nice refreshing video. A question to Ryan: what is the manufacturer of the electric distribution pannel you used to replace the original one? Are you happy with it? I'm looking forward to a similar project... any advice?
Ryan used Blue Seas panels in his upgrade.
Great job!
Was Barnacle adopted from an animal shelter or a breeder?
You would think that the manufacturer would take particular note of these upgrades to make their boats more practical to live on.
How about the silent toilet? .. Is the sound ok? Or is it loud? I have an older electric conversion kit and it makes a lot of noise.
It makes some noise (unavoidable with a macerator) but I really don’t find it bad at all. I lack comparison points, but others who’ve used it have told me it’s nothing compared to theirs.
Throughout this, I kept saying to myself, "Gee, it looks a lot like Boston."
Why does your video have SO many ads compared to other channels?
Pray, tell: what does the word Polar Seal mean and when/why did you name it that?
Boston, nice.
You’re in Boston….
that's right! :)
Edmonton Alberta!
Great video, you are a goddess and even what’s his name is getting better.
regarding the head?? doesnt it still stink?
how long are you staying in Boston ?
Congratulations
I wish more RUclips cruisers did full tour like this
It really shows the layout of ALL of the boat 👏👏👏
Thankyou 👍🏽
