@@kamavery4477 wow! i thought i was in deep at about $16k of modular… not counting all the other stuff: recording interfaces, controllers, pedals, Volcas… I bet you’ve got a fun system there!
Thanks for saying that, I honestly hate most videos where they’re trying to explain Eurorack, like 30 minutes and I still don’t know how to get started lol
Nice video, I hope it’s not limited to 3 episodes. The first step to getting into Eurorack is cancelling your credit cards with lots of unused credit available. Even if you have been financially responsible in the past, most humans aren’t up for this level of self control.
Ha. Exactly. I'm just getting into modular and my credit cards are in extreme danger. I'm going to attempt to learn and try as much DIY as possible. You can get a ton of modules for 1/6 the price that way and gain some great skills in the process. Tiptop is definitely getting my $600 for that Circadian Rhythms sequencer, though (drool).
This video is bursting with excitement and enthusiasm. I don't have a modular but halfway through this I had to turn on my VCV rack and start experimenting. Your passion is contagious.
Mostly focused on manipulating/modulating acoustic instruments like guitar, etc. I've had an Akai Miniak, but will very soon be upgrading to either a Blofeld or a Dreadbox Nyx. :)
Morphagene is 'spensey but it seems like a nice way to both sample a sound source into Eurorack and start mangling it. Can also function as a stereo line-in. It'll probably be my first big acquisition. One thing to consider FX wise is that, for some things, pedals may just be cheaper/more-effective options. If it's got an expression port it's controllable by CV! Friends I know tend to leave end-of-chain effects (like 'verb that won't be modulated) to pedals. Certainly there's a charm to just having everything in a rack though.
Yeah pedal manufacturers obsess over "tone" cuz guitarists are picky, but it results in the creamiest sounding effects pedals. To me, eurorack's more focused on high-level sound manipulation and signal manipulation/inversion/etc.
Lots of good info right off the bat. I made the mistake of just getting modules I really wanted in the beginning and ignoring need. Very expensive and and important lesson. I would like to point out that if you are handy with wood you can build a case for about 20 bucks and some work. This is minus the power and rails of course. For a couple hundred dollars you can build a massive case. I have a 13u 104hp case because I put in the work on the wood. Also, if you’re handy with a soldering iron than power becomes much cheaper. Andrew from nonlinear circuits put up tons of case plans on thingverse both for building or even 3D printing cases, and it’s all free.
I'm not even done watching this short clip but I'm pausing to comment on how wonderfully helpful this is. I'm coming from the world of guitars/a stupid large pedalboard and have wanted to break into Eurorack stuff for years but have been too intimidated. Thank you again! Can't wait to delve in.
Ah, thank you! Girlfriend and I agreed that I should wait a month or so as the semester winds down to start selling off guitar gear to convert to eurorack stuff(to be sure it's the fiscal route I want to go when I have the actual free time to sit and learn this stuff and play.) One note about cables, if you already have a soldering iron, making your own patch cables is a great way to save a lot of money and make whatever length cable you want, i got a bunch of bulk mogami gold 2524 cable and some bulk 1/8 inch rean jacks and it's way cheaper and feels way more premium, and they look pretty good too, also even if you don't have a soldering iron a cheap 20 dollar one from Amazon will do for something this simple.
@NoirEtBlancVie I'm good with semi-modular for now. I like building things but at some point I just want to make music. I wanna learn about eurorack so I can see how far I can push my desktop synths.
Great video! I started with a Doepfer Dark Energy and was hooked when I started patching. Soon I had a Doepfer 2 unit height case like you have now and now I've gotten myself a 3 HE case because of how a modular system can grow but it's managable if you start with a few and then over time build it up... :-D Main thing that I noticed is that it's surprising how important utility modules like multiples are. And cables, like you mention. You never have enough cables! :-D
Just got my own Doepfer LC6 in last week :D Seems to be the best bang for the buck for a low cost case (it's in the name!). The cheaper Skiff case has issues with depth and power consumption, whereas the larger Doepfer LC9 is also power starved when fully filled. I put a carbon gray stain on my LC6 and it's looking great- similar to the EP-208 shown. One money conscious way to go about things is DIY. I currently have the components for my first few modules in plastic bags- just waiting on the PCBs to arrive from international orders. With some time and a moderate amount of money invested into a soldering setup, it can decrease the cost on certain modules. Grabbing things used on ebay or Muffs rather than getting too carried away with pre-planning to purchase everything new seems to be a good way to go as well. Finally, I'd look into what your other gear can provide- my Minilogue will serve as my clock initially (though Korg products like the ML and Volca's are half-tempo in Eurorack), and with an English Tear my MS-20 Mini can provide a lot of utility functionality at first.
Definitely cheaper! Intellijel's was four times more expensive with all the 1U modules I wanted (one day though!) This is what I'm getting first, feel free to offer up some suggestions: www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/575483
Definitely a good starter kit, damn look at that price though! Hahaha you want to eventually fill the case? Good call on the Black Wavetable VCO, it's so versatile!

As of 2021, by far the best starting point for super broke people (like me) is the NiftyBundle. For $250 you get a powered case with a sequencer, midi and audio converters, and two voices. You're getting $400 of value for $250. Did this and I'm so happy.
i got a case off of etsy (underrated place to get cases imo) and am about to start small with eurorack. i have a semimodular synth and have ordered the mimeophon and maths to upgrade it. Im hoping to slowly collect modules until i have filled my two rows of 88hp

Cool video, I am recently getting into modular... I am into noise music, drones, and stuff like Puce Mary makes. Do you have any suggestions for a few modules to start out with ?? Thanks!
Natasha Witcher sorry for the late response Natasha, my first suggestion if you haven’t already is pick up a Cloud’s Module second hand on EBay. They don’t sell them anymore, so that’s my first suggestion :)
Why are you recommending the Mantis case and not the one that you use (shown in all your videos) ? ...... looks like it's a Doepfer ? .... beginners need to know 🙂
Because as a beginner I picked the Doepfer, and in hindsight I wouldn’t choose it again. I would have picked the mantis. The Doepfer is less expensive and a larger HP. In all reality for me the Doepfer was the best choice at the time, but it was overpriced back then.
I am the dude that went full 420hp before even knowing what EuroRack was. What ever, I do what I want! It is now half full, I was bummed out to discover that the MakeNoise 0-coast isn't EuroRack mountable. I probably should read more, but turns out I can modify it though so, I get what I want!
Noir Et Blanc Vie so basically what your saying is buy cheap modules first. I already have too cases ( a suitcase and big wooden thing I have to ask for)
I first watched this at the same time as you, 3 years ago, and I held out for so long. I even satiated my thirst with a new 2600 and a subharmonicon along with a Zoia and some nifty boutique pedals...I was doing so well. I just bought a rackbrute and 4 mutable instruments modules. Dammit.
@@yourmaw8790 Hey! I’m interested in the DFAM and Subharmonicon combo from Moog but I don’t know if I should rather spend that money on a rack, what do you think? Cheers!
@@JX-jk9qn hello! id always say go for a rack because you can plan it out and really make it your own. I went for a more granular sampling machine so i ended up with one oscillator and the rest utilities, sequencers and granular based units like the morphagene and arbhar. Its important to plan these things out and have a clear vision for what you want your rack to be able to do. The price of a subH and DFAM would go a long way in starting your modular journey. I say, do some research, plan it, and pick yourself up a powered case with a module or two. Be prepared that if you go too small with the case you might end up spending more in the future! i learned this the hard way! Behringer Go seems like a decent sized case for the price. Good luck friend!
I would never be able to handle the different colored modules - it would drive me nuts and I would end up just going with one manufacturer, which defeats the whole purpose. Probably for the best, since this stuff looks hella addictive to me.

I never knew the cases cost so much.... May I say only this...P.M.-SV-1 + Moog Subsequent 37 CV(OR Waldorf KB37, OR MFB Dominion 1), + Oberheim TVP(add voices for polyphony)... I would like to see the capabilities of some Algorithm Modules(Make Noise Maths, Akemie's Castle, Ornament & Crime Harrington, ErbeVerb/Worng Electr.-Vektor Space(Reverb) on small scale) Intuitive Quantizer, + Rainmaker... I feel there is a narrow capacity to have less... but somehow the essentials pieces must be there/that tiny package for everyone,(Just no-one's there yet.) I think everyone should never buy an envelope... and go w/ Cirklon Sequencer(+ Drum Trigger Module, +w/ UnoBob OR the UknowBOB, YounoBOB???). I think everyone should never have to buy a case... I would hopefully not go further than 8-10 modules and get the Parts/Electrical and build it in a suitcase, like the DIY Synth guy @ that price(We, the people are paying for Shipping/Handling.... outrageous.) What Suitcase do you recommend??????????? ;) The more equipment that can do more than one job... should in the end save the most money. That was a very well construed/apt/forethought eye-opening Disclaimer! You just kicked my arse in such belief. =( Thanks Noir Blanc Et Vie AHHHHHHHHHHHHH Tooo many modules.... CRASH!
Im here bcuz i studied pro tools in college and i believe the 3 piece band is coming back.... Im thinking this plus a 3 or 4 piece band you can really put on a show for people.(edm is dead 😆)
I grew up recording and producing hardcore bands in HS/college. I keep hoping it will come back, but POP and Hip-Hop found a way to be the “cool” thing to do, someone just has to find a way to make it “cool” to be in a band again. It must not be profitable or something, if it were labels would be pushing it more heavily.
You could, lots of manufacturers make plugin versions of their modules. Reason was always a great spot to start for a similar interface. For me it’s all about the physical interface and not looking at a computer screen. So trust me, Eurorack is extremely cost prohibitive
Can you By the power supplies separately ? Wouldn't it be Cheaper and then you wouldn't have to worry about how many Patch cables because you can choose than ? In fact what would you need for the power supplies? Batters how many wolts and that green board what's it called ? In the next series Could you please go a little more in-depth on the power supply Case stuff .please but GREAT VID 👌👍
I hear what you’re saying, since this is a Beginners Series I wanted to make this extremely uncomplicated. So that’s why I suggested going with a pre-installed power supply, it’s my recommendation. So no, unfortunately there will be no expounding on idea of buying your own power supply, as I personally can’t recommend it. (And this series took like 80 hours to film and edit). Part 3 is going up this Tuesday.
HOLY FUCK! When you showed the prices of the wood cases... I could buy a lot of "funny trashplay" synths like Monotron or so 5 times with that money. Why are only the casing that expensive? This looks like a normal Eurorack has the cost of a small flat in the middle of a populated city. I'd rather stick with Reaktor 6 for a while until I really know what I want and can do. If this stuff was cheaper, I would consider it... but you could buy a TB-303 with that kind of money. ='(
So true, the barrier of entry is crazy high, though the payoff is maybe worth it only if you have the disposable to justify it. Both you and I wish it was cheaper, my little case is all I could afford at the time.
Here's a bargain basement solution--cardboard. No, seriously! www.synthtopia.com/content/2015/03/16/how-to-make-a-diy-3u-eurorack-modular-synthesizer-case/
Brian H. Also for those that might be reading this, cardboard is also a great way to prototype your custom rack and ensure that your modules with fit with the power supply... made an oops? Out with the craft knife or box cutter and attack it again. It's much quicker than cutting plywood or particle board. :-)
Why not start with a semi modular that can fit into a eurorack like behringer's neutron or model d clone? Only about $300 for a working monosynth Build up from there . . . Even then it will burn a hole in your bank account but atleast you can get started on the cheap.
Take me to Church & I'll listen like a dog... I have been asking the wrong questions, part of the learning curve I guess, I'm hoping this is the right one.. I own a Benjolin 2v, a 0 control, Erica synths Sample Drum, WMD pro output & Maths, installed in a powered rack, all hooked up & working. The question I have... are there modules or parts am I missing "meaning" I have noise makers Maths & Benjolin, I have a keyboard, 0 control, I have a method to bring in sample sources & "drum sounds" (I think I'm a little confused on this point " Sample DRUM right? ) & what I think is an amp WMD Pro Output every video I've seen , does not explain or show the leads to an amp & the powered speakers or mixer so I guess my question is three fold, 1. do I have all the necessary modules 2. more information on once the sound leaves the rack how is it amplified properly those options it is assumed in this community from the videos & other resources this is common knowledge but its not 3. basic patching to begin to explore the different sounds On Modular grid .net when I built a virtual synth & started to experiment with it it gives me this message ×This Rack does not contain any Modules that are playable in TrueGrid. I have been using the guitar pedal of my sons FX 100 by Flamma the amp contained & head phone jack & volume it to produce sounds , but I don't like the "Barney Fife" method, & my kid wants his pedal back I hope this better explains my dilemma, any advise helps, thanking anyone who answers in advance, kind of feeling like Ricky from trailer park boys , sad because I only have my grade 10, in this very cool group of people
Cases are ridiculously over-priced. They are ,after all, just cases and power supplies are pretty cheap to buy separately. $1000 for a $60 psu in a box...... crazy!
I totally agree, I think of it compared to a PC and a case. There’s no PC power supply and case that costs as much as my first Eurorack case costs. Obviously I can only speculate to the business plans and the financials of Eurorack companies. Though it seems to me $100 is where I think the ceiling should be, though the small companies probably can’t sell cases at a loss. My Pittsburgh case cost me like $800, that’s a lot, though it’s large and I’ve dropped it from like 3 feet once and 5 feet another time and it was fine and so were my modules so worth the price. You make a good point. If a 800w 80 plus gold power supply and case costs like $150 in the PC world I’d need to be educated more as to why this can’t exist in Eurorack.
love this series. I can't wait to be broke.

I am recently getting into modular...
Try LYRA-8 ;)
Just got approved for a loan so that I can start thinking about maybe getting into modular!!
I see you like to live dangerously 😉
THANSK for SHARING.
GREETINGS from CABO VERDE ISLANDS🤩🤩🤩
This is so interesting for me, even though ill stick with the "Rack" software + Keystep for a long while. Can not wait what the part 2 will bring!
Thanks, I’ve got some editing to do on 2 and 3, hopefully I can make it a series that will give guidance for years to come!
Noir Et Blanc Vie could be a great long term project
Great video - thanks!
You’re welcome Stephen! (Great name BTW😉)
@@NoirEtBlancVie thanks so much
i'm just contemplating whether i should start with modular synthesis, or start using crack.. i think the latter might be the cheaper addiction..
Heroin a possible choice or no? Lol
@@NoirEtBlancVie yes, but i can't decide..is this how it feels when having to choose which module one should buy? ;)
Hahaha, I’m upgrading to the EP-360, next week. Which manufacturer did you get the 420hp rack from?
I went with the Pittsburgh Modular Structure EP-420
xmas tree is a great touch :)
Haha, I shot this around Christmas...I was too lazy to move my tree 😅
Glad to see another black man going in to the side nerdy music, But I have questions.
Eurorack question? Go right ahead!
Noir Et Blanc Vie so basically what your saying is buy cheap modules first. I already have too cases ( a suitcase and big wooden thing I have to ask for)
So you don't have any modules just yet, right?
Noir Et Blanc Vie no I have two modules and I just ordered 3 more. I really want to get into serge’s modular so I can’t make songs like Scott Gilmore.
Which 5 modules did you buy?
I really shouldn't watch this....I'm going to fall into the Eurorack hole.
Would you recommend buying already put together euroracks?
Only if you have the money for a Make Noise Shared System, Black & Gold 😂
@@NoirEtBlancVie there's also a doepfer which is 2x cheaper hahaha
Oh, I didn’t know. What’s the system called?
@@NoirEtBlancVie I don't remember just look up doepfer
“if you have big eurorack dreams, pick up a big case...”
word
I can’t afford even a single thing to start off, well I suppose I’ll get started once I find a better paying job
I would never be able to handle the different colored modules - it would drive me nuts and I would end up just going with one manufacturer, which defeats the whole purpose. Probably for the best, since this stuff looks hella addictive to me.
is 64hp too small, im just starting low budget?
Nah, not too small, but just don’t go too small and want a bigger case later. 😌
Noir Et Blanc Vie thnx, with the parts I want it’s still looking to be 1600 ish which is devastating lol
Yeah, I actually had someone in the Thursday livestream let me know that my modular with all the modules was $6300. Wow lol
It’s like boat racing, u need a boat to race
Can I trade my Eurorack for a real boat? 😁
Just writing a note to myself on 12/5/20 to remind myself what it was like when I have money and no modular synths.
Scott End never forget this day lol😄
@@NoirEtBlancVie I've just finished watching the series (thank you - very easy to understand and follow) and played around with the VCV Rack. Thinking of picing up a Mother-32 as an early birthday present and going from there...
I've subscribed too and looking forward to checking out more videos. Thank you for such great content!
Scott End just sayin...wait till tomorrow before settling on the Mother-32. Just sayin ;)
@@NoirEtBlancVie Hahaha... Oh god! haha I'll re-tie my purse strings for now. Although the one I've seen is less than £400 ($500) pretty much brand new..
Excited for tomorrow now!

Out Hud - Let Us Never Speak Of It Again
Casino Versus Japan - Go Hawaii
Boards of Canada - Music Has The Right To Children
Apex Twin - Assorted Ambient Works 85-92
Yessssssssssss
Finally! Sorry it took so long!!
Why does part 1 come after part 2 in the playlist?
I fixed this, thank you for pointing this out?
I never knew the cases cost so much.... May I say only this...P.M.-SV-1 + Moog Subsequent 37 CV(OR Waldorf KB37, OR MFB Dominion 1), + Oberheim TVP(add voices for polyphony)...
I would like to see the capabilities of some Algorithm Modules(Make Noise Maths, Akemie's Castle, Ornament & Crime Harrington, ErbeVerb/Worng Electr.-Vektor Space(Reverb) on small scale)
Intuitive Quantizer, + Rainmaker...
I feel there is a narrow capacity to have less... but somehow the essentials pieces must be there/that tiny package for everyone,(Just no-one's there yet.)
I think everyone should never buy an envelope... and go w/ Cirklon Sequencer(+ Drum Trigger Module, +w/ UnoBob OR the UknowBOB, YounoBOB???).
I think everyone should never have to buy a case... I would hopefully not go further than 8-10 modules and get the Parts/Electrical and build it in a suitcase, like the DIY Synth guy @ that price(We, the people are paying for Shipping/Handling.... outrageous.)
What Suitcase do you recommend??????????? ;)
The more equipment that can do more than one job... should in the end save the most money.
That was a very well construed/apt/forethought eye-opening Disclaimer!
You just kicked my arse in such belief. =(
Thanks Noir Blanc Et Vie
AHHHHHHHHHHHHH Tooo many modules....
Thanks 🅱.
Dope...
Thank you, I hope it provided some useful information!
Can I get a few programs to do all of this virtually and not spend as much money
You could, lots of manufacturers make plugin versions of their modules. Reason was always a great spot to start for a similar interface. For me it’s all about the physical interface and not looking at a computer screen. So trust me, Eurorack is extremely cost prohibitive
@@NoirEtBlancVie my idea is to get the digital stuff first and when I get the money get all the things
Totally makes sense. In the video I suggest trying VCV Rack to see if modular is right for you. It’s free :)
Can you By the power supplies separately ? Wouldn't it be
Cheaper and then you wouldn't have to worry about how many
Patch cables because you can choose than ? In fact what would you need for the power supplies? Batters how many wolts and that green board what's it called ? In the next series
Could you please go a little more in-depth on the power supply
Case stuff .please but GREAT VID 👌👍
I hear what you’re saying, since this is a Beginners Series I wanted to make this extremely uncomplicated. So that’s why I suggested going with a pre-installed power supply, it’s my recommendation. So no, unfortunately there will be no expounding on idea of buying your own power supply, as I personally can’t recommend it. (And this series took like 80 hours to film and edit). Part 3 is going up this Tuesday.
Noir Et Blanc Vie ok just wanted to know
Noir Et Blanc Vie THIS TUESDAY !!!!! YEESSSSSSSSSSSS
BETTER TURN THE BELL ON !!! o wait I already have...
What does HP stand for?
Only thing I can think of is Horse Power🤣 yeah I'm a total noob!!
4:13 why you tease her like that
But why is the price so high for a "cheap wooden box"? Is this a module-sized standard which got quality ratings?
Honestly it's the power supply. Truth is, if you've got the skills creating the box yourself is the way to go. Most cases are way overpriced.
This dude straight from boys 2 men Motown Philly music video from like 92 lol
Straight CooleyHighHarmony type 😂
Well. Thank God i'm a drummer 1st. xD
It’s so cheap though, it only costs your soul to get started 😅
I‘m a drummer, too, but man, synthesis is FASCINATING. Just got my firstmodule: a Clouds. Will connect it to the Behringer Model D a.o. things.
Why not start with a semi modular that can fit into a eurorack like behringer's neutron or model d clone? Only about $300 for a working monosynth Build up from there . . . Even then it will burn a hole in your bank account but atleast you can get started on the cheap.
I’m not sure you actually watched the whole series, but I say exactly that
Complete.... he said complete....
Do you HAVEEEEE to get a case if you just want to use one rack.....
Unfortunately yes
4:12
Fukyeah
Did you find it helpful? 🙂
those glasses...
Take me to Church & I'll listen like a dog...
I have been asking the wrong questions, part of the learning curve I guess, I'm hoping this is the right one..
I own a Benjolin 2v, a 0 control, Erica synths Sample Drum, WMD pro output & Maths,
installed in a powered rack, all hooked up & working.
The question I have...
are there modules or parts am I missing "meaning"
I have noise makers Maths & Benjolin,
I have a keyboard, 0 control,
I have a method to bring in sample sources & "drum sounds"
(I think I'm a little confused on this point " Sample DRUM right? )
& what I think is an amp WMD Pro Output
every video I've seen , does not explain or show the leads to an amp & the powered speakers or mixer
so I guess my question is three fold,
1. do I have all the necessary modules
2. more information on once the sound leaves the rack how is it amplified properly those options
it is assumed in this community from the videos & other resources this is common knowledge but its not
3. basic patching to begin to explore the different sounds
On Modular grid .net when I built a virtual synth & started to experiment with it
it gives me this message
×This Rack does not contain any Modules that are playable in TrueGrid.
I have been using the guitar pedal of my sons FX 100 by Flamma
the amp contained & head phone jack & volume it to
produce sounds ,
but I don't like the "Barney Fife" method, & my kid wants his pedal back
I hope this better explains my dilemma,
any advise helps,
thanking anyone who answers in advance,
kind of feeling like Ricky from trailer park boys ,
sad because I only have my grade 10, in this very cool group of people
if you're picking eurorack make the case yourself. It'll be way cheaper
Wait, you actually have eyes under those shades? ;)
Haha, Lame ass eyes
@@NoirEtBlancVie I will be buying a minilogue xd in January but for now I think I will stick with vcv rack...... it's free!
