i remember reading about this match in his autobiograbhy "Open" the fight he had against his Coach Brad Gilbert: YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE PERFECT! YOU JUST HAVE TO BE BETTER THAN THE OTHER GUY!
The story here for me wasn't Andre winning the French Open. It was Andre inspiring his opponent Medvedev when he was contemplating retirement two months prior. Such a nice story on top of his victory in Paris.
I didn't know their background but I always wondered, since Medvedev offered such a sincere hug and words at the end. I figured they must have had some kind of connection, since as Andre admits, he didn't get particularly close to too many guys on the Tour.
I remember my dad watching this match on TV when I was like 4, and he jumped up when Andre won and yelled lets go! Andre was a big influence on why I started playing tennis and after I read his book, my mentality about tennis changed too. Truly inspiring champion.
Andrei deserved at least 1 grand slam. He was always around the mark at the French Open in the 90s and that year was his big chance, but agassi was unbelievable to come back. It's tough seeing a guy who was 2 sets up about to win his lone grand slam get outgunned by one of the all time champions of the game but man did agassi earn the french after the horrible days in 90 and 91.
What I love about these legends is that they remember each match, set game and ball strike as if it were just played yesterday...as do the current champions of today.
@@naxo9975 Depends on the style of serve and volley. Edberg and McEnroe made finals and were generally good on clay because they could move well and their serves were slower so they had time to get in. Their style emphasized the volley over the serve. Pete's style of serve and volley relied on a big serve, which meant he wasn't as fast getting into the net, and because people could get his serve back easier on clay he wasn't in the best position to volley. That's my take at least.
Andre Agassi was a versatile player, the first in history to win all 4 Grand Slam tournaments on 3 different surfaces (hard, grass and clay). He became a prototype, a trailblazer for the future golden generation, also known as Big-3/4. The true all-courters or aggressive baseliners like Djokovic, Federer, Nadal and Murray. Long live Andre!
I cried that day, I was so over the moon, so so happy for Andre, especially after this nerveracking final...he was my idol (with Jim), and if I have to pick my best memory as a tennis lover, I'm picking that one. Andre is a living legend, he can be so proud of his incredible career. Icing on the cake, he's such a good person too. Merci Andre!!!Love from France.
Andre was an inspiration in the way he came back from demotivation being a runner-up to Pete so many times. He probably didn't have the best technique, but inspired people from his absolute relentlessness and never give up attitude. Andre has a special place in tennis history for me, coming back from oblivion, to win in Roland Garros. It was that moment that he very much inspired me in my life to keep going and not give up.
@@4zafinc I'm talking about a good quality one. The one I've watched looks like it was recorded VHS over the air and reminds me of watching stuff in my dorm room on my roommates black and white TV with bad reception. Roland Garros has the 99 women's final on RUclips. The quality is excellent. Why not this one? Edit: I found one that's pretty good - much better than the one I had seen before.
Two reasons I fell in love with the sport and started playing myself at the age of 7. My dad and Andre Agassi. Now I am introducing the game to my kids.
Mon idole.... j'adore son jeu et son charisme... un très très grand joueur qui aurait pu avoir beaucoup plus de titres du Grand Chelem... Tout simplement le Kid de Las Vegas
This win in 1999 resurrected him. Runner up at Wimbledon, winning the us open and ending the season as the number one player in the world. agassi mania was in full swing period
Favorite match of all time and favorite player of all time. I got a McDonalds tray mat signed to me from Agassi from my time in Bradenton in the 90’s. Agassi was eating McDonald’s in the long hair days
I remember being 12 years old watching this and remembering...."you get to that backhand and you swing like your shoulder will break". I did it with a 2-hander first, then to the 1-hander. But THIS match was the inspiration.
Happy birthday Andre. Such a lovable guy. Edit : thats what champions do. 2 sets down 4 all in the third, 2 double faults in a row 30 all, second serve and what Andre does? He wins that game and the next one. Suddenly he wins a set. From that point on, everything was more easier. Well done Andre
what a mindset ... i remember watching the game and having the impression to watch a 5 year old kid vs. a giant for the first two sets ... tactics was part of it of course but also and it 's part of that tournament even if it doesn't please everyone public was 150% in favor of Andre, it definitely played a role... and I still got the original towel I will never leave it :)
It's so crazy that he was going to skip this year and Brad Gilbert talked him into going, finds out he has a horrid draw and almost loses early. Then after winning goes on the best run of his career I was so happy when he won
This was the last great trophy Andre needed to win in order to win all there is to win. Coming into this match he had already won the major honours...3-time GS champion (92 Wimby, 94 USO, 95 AO), 90 ATP Finals, and 96 Olympic Gold. This was his 4th GS title and added another 4 (99 USO, 00-01 and 03 AO).
Would be lovely to see the trio sitting and talking about their encounters over their careers especially djokovic and Federer talking about playing Nadal in a French final
Agassi was more serious with his game in the later years of his careers. It appears to me that tennis was fun for him in his early years and then later was a more professional attitude toward the game.

Agassi..... the cleanest most textbook groundstrokes of all time. Never seen a ball hit like that.... even in todays era.
yes 💯
never seen him shanked a ball. the big 3 always shank a ball on every match they play.

Incredible anticipation especially on the serve could punish you from the baseline making you run run run with those precise groundstrokes.

True, he didn't win as many champion titles as Pete Sampras. But his entire career seems to be more inspiring to every tennis fan in real life

What an incredible win that was - the defining moment which gave him a new life and also a new love!
Just finished this chapter in Andre’s book. I cried reading it and this is just icing on the cake. The look on his face speaks volumes.
This is the moment Sampras would kill to have.
Sampras was never good on clay. He didnt even reach finals of french open.

Pete had the ability to win it, but a poor combination of coaching, fitness and attitude got in his way.

It's impressive that Andre achieved the Grand Slam in his first 4 titles (Wimbledon 1992, US Open 1994, Australian Open 1995 and Roland Garros 1999)
