I got here the same way! Just finished his book. I played a lot of competition tennis in the 90's and loved watching Andre back then. It was nice to watch this again.
I get cold shivers just thinking about this. I was in France in 1999 but I left in the month of May. Then my hero Andre Agassi turned around and won the French Open and the Paris Indoors. He was and is much loved the world over by fans just like me.
Agreed, because I think everybody watching this match knew this was probably his last shot at winning The French and completing the career Grand Slam. As great as Agassi was on clay early in his career, this was the only semi or better he had at Roland Garros the last 14 years of his career.
Runner up in 1990 and 1991 here, before he won wimbledon, Agassi finally came out in the 3rd set and never looked back. He finally won it, just when I was giving up on it. Yes very satisfying, even a big relief, as he had already won all the other majors once by this time, and was almost in his 30s by this time
1:32:07 this the moment that Medvedev had the match in his hands. In the book Agassi said this is where it all changed for him. What an amazing volley given the circumstances and Agassi’s tendency to not volley on big points. Shows you how desperate the situation was for him. He really was hanging by a nail.
Medvedev seems like a really good, likeable guy as well. Obviously he was quite talented. It would have been nice to see him win a Grand Slam title as well.
The 1999 FO title completed his career grand slam and helped turn his roller-coaster career around to another HOF level. He went on to win 4 more slams (3 AO and 1 USO). I truly believe Agassi could have won 12 or more total slams if he had worked with a sports pyschiatrist early in his career. One of the most interesting tennis players I have ever witnessed in the last 45 years.
@@WONGLER No, I don't have those. Thanks for mentioning specifics, though. If I record them in the future, I will let you know, and maybe I'll upload them. That's what I did with this 1999 FO match this past summer. I was frustrated at the lo def options available, so I added this match to my DVR wishlist, then a few weeks later, it was scheduled to record. After that, I uploaded it. I have a few different wishlists for tennis on my DVR. If any of them capture Edberg or Wilander matches and they get recorded, I will let you know.
I was a big Agassi fan. However, like most people, I thought Andre was done after his disastrous 1997 campaign. Watching Andre come back from 2-0 down in this match & win the French Open, something which hadn't seemed possible mere months before, felt like reality itself was being turned on its head.
The Grand Slam win that propelled Agassi to legendary status - The moment where he won all 4 Grand Slams (Not even the likes of Sampras, Becker, Edberg, Lendl et al could manage that feat)
yea but pete got em back the rest of the year especially at wimbledon. the single highest level a tennis player could ever reach is what pete did in the final.
The last thing I thought was that Agassi would Wimbledon before the other majors, but also to win the French this late in his up and down career. And this was when he was 29. But he was reborn, hungry and focused. What a different Agassi after the 1st 2 sets of this classic championship match.
I'm so glad I finally got to see this match. Thank you for posting it! It was not aired in Charlotte, N Carolina when I was living there in 1999, they showed some charity event on the local NBC channel instead. I was so pissed. I've always loved Agassi and this was his finest moment. Very emotional, fantastic comeback win to complete his career Grand Slam.
Came here after reading chapter 22 of his autobiography. He provides more insight about this match than any other as it is a microcosm of his career comeback, and served as a catalyst for the best phase of his career. When Agassi retired, no tennis star had ever enhanced their game in their 30s. Novak has since as well.
I remember watching this match all the way through. I really didn’t think Andre would win after losing the first 2 sets. I remember screaming& cheering when Agassi started playing well. He was my favorite befor Roger.
Sick comeback. Andre was dead in this, and was getting outmuscled at the baseline. Agassi changed it up, and won a lot of big points from coming in after big goundies and finishing the volley off. Such a great champion Agassi was. I still think he has the best groundstrokes of all time. Beautiful to watch.
Andre was very personable and interesting. Qualities that are missing in this ultra professional era . His persona and thoughts were expressed which endeared him to the public. I’d love to meet him and thank him 🙏
Jajaja he was the luckiest winner that year! Clement,Moya ,Hrbaty and Medevedev shocked ! How many times that happedend 4 guys lost their concentration ,Agassi played normal the other guys lost it
After 2 sets I just switched off the tv. But in next days news paper I couldn't believe my eyes. Two sets down from the ashes Agassi rose like a phoenix and defeated medvedev
I switched off the Tv . When Agassi loss two sets. But in next day newspaper I was wondered . I could not believe my eyes. Down 2 sets Agassi roused like a phoenix
Crazy that a player can be in the top 5 and then drop all the way to 100 by age 25. D. Medvedev's comeback against Auger-Aliassime in the Australian open QF 2022 resembled this match.
Right before the French, Nick would have the red clay court next to the pool constructed to French open specs. Gill Reyes stalked the baseline as Dre spat BARZ!!!
I wonder how a prime Agassi would stack up today on clay. He stands right on the baseline taking time away from the opponent while every player today is well behind the baseline. It would be interesting.
During this quarantine this year, I have been watching a lot of older matches from the 80s and 90s. I agree, the lack of score on the screen makes it difficult to watch. Not only that, but for one of the matches, the broadcasters didn't even audibly say the score after every point. So I would get lost within a game, and have a hard time keeping track. For one stretch during this specific match, they went two games without either audibly saying the score, or flashing it.
I went to search his finals after I read one of his chapters on his book. When Brad wanted to hug The Big Gil, haha Gil just smiled and touched Brads arm 🤣
1:31:14 é o momento em que Agassi começa a perder os saques e erra cinco serviços seguidos, dando a oportunidade de Medvedv quebrar o serviço dele e sacar para o jogo. O grito de Agassi ao errar o quarto saque é desesperador.
Bollltieri would call the top Boys to play practice matches with the Pros, Glenn Weiner, Dina, Marcus Fluit, Slex Bose. I’d get mad when my name wasn’t called, I was no where near good enough
I agree. I have a hard time watching some matches from the 70s - early 90s because of this. There was one match when not only was there no scoreboard, but the broadcasters didn't even update the score within a game, for over one game. So I was losing track of what the in-game score was, then what the set score was after the game was over.
Dre, we was gathered round the TV on campus at Bolletieri. We was all covered in ice packs trying to heal from the gruelling Florida Sun. Budweisers hidden in our Gatorade bottles, dipping tobacco tucked in our lips, all courtesy of campus security, all for a fee. Martin gave me tha plug, I pulled the Boyz money together. You had just left Bolletieri for Brad Gilbert, but Sheeeeiiitttt!! NIGGAH!! WE WAS ALL WIT YOU. AND TGE GREAT GILL REYES!!! that bad line call by the umpire in the 5th set cost medvedev this match it was what cost him the break, and medvedev would have been up 40-15 instead of 30 all and it cost medvedev a break and the match.the line judge called it good and it was on the line, and the umpire looked at the wrong spot
Agassi was ranked only 13 here...and Medvedev was unseeded. Where are the big guys and seeded players in this tournament? Destined to be Agassi tournament..
Well Sampras lost in the first round like he used to do every year. Hrbaty defeated world n°1 Kafelnikov in second round and Rios in 1/4. Agassi and Medvedev defeated two big favorites (Moya and Kuerten) respectively in 4th round and quarter-final. Meligeni had an amazing run beating Rafter, Mantilla and Corretja.
