That pay phone seems like ancient history. Remember making a long distance call? The operator would tell you the price for three minutes. As you put in the money she (they were all women) would add up the total just from the sounds the different coins made. When you put in enough, the call would go through. When the three minutes were up, she would break in to tell you to put more money in.
Cool beans on your keyboard. I'll hook you up with my girl Patty Pend, she'll take you places with that one. Wouldn't hurt to talk to her about that drill bit spanner too. Oh, keyboard finish is nice as displayed. But my second choice would be a cherry stain with some satin black accents.
In regards to the pleasure of hanging up on someone with old phone handsets, I recall the hours of fun had busting coworkers chops by ending a call on a plant phone with: "Oh one more thing..." Or "Hey listen to this..." ...and then violently hanging up. Good times!
You have a beautiful sounding knob, John! The trick to egg-beater drills IS getting a perpendicular hole - so its the perfect training tool. I still have my late Uncle's Stanley Drill. Handy if you want to makes holes at 03.00 hours!
I love the hidden compartment! How about some kind of two tone coloring, a chestnut for the sides and some kind of clear or a light blond color for the key holder part to help the keys stand out...
Great episode John! You’re right, looking back those phones were gross to use but we still did it. What choice did we have? One of the best slamming phone scenes is by Nicholas Cage in Moonstruck in the bakery. I used the A-B repeat feature on my DVD player on the scene which cycled just the right moment he slammed the phone down. It was perfect and hilarious. The drill bit method in place of a spanner pin wrench is genius. Definitely going to remember that one. I watched a video of a guy welding two pins onto the adjustable wrench jaws. Worked pretty well but a lot of work for a cheap tool. You did that old eggbeater proud. I always liked them. Maybe it’s because my mom always made me make the whipped cream with a real eggbeater. 👍😀
Hi Scoutcrafter I am sure those hand sets home ones as well were used as weapons.' They were comfortable on your ear some people would talk all day on those. I forgot to mention I liked the batman key hanger.
Great video! I have restored a lot of the egg beater drills. Those springs on the jaws are hard to find. I found out if you buy Bic mechanical pencils they are the same size. Took me forever to find the right size. So hopefully that will help someone else in the future. Thank You for sharing 😃
Outstanding episode! Your key caddy is very clever.. I like it... I say paint it pink....that seem to be the hot color these days....😂.. really, I like dark walnut..but that Grain looks nice... maybe just clear it.. the drill looks fantastic!! Its stunning! Enjoyed it Mr. John! Thank ya!
I love that little mettle square at the end it looks so usable for on the job tight quarters (welding). Great video ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇲👍🏻✌🏻 freedom 🇨🇦 truckers 🇬🇧🇺🇲
Good stuff Bud!! The only thing more disgusting than a public phone was the booth, especially right after someone pissed in there or just got done smoking eh!!☻
Lol great scene from Goodfellas 😂. That drill cleaned up so nice. The wax really made those threads super smooth at the end. Since it's February and Valentine's. I say ScoutCrafter red that's my choice for color :D
I share your consternation regarding the finish on the key rack. If you had used the cheapo 1x4s from Home Depot then you would have filled the blemishes, sanded it nicely, and then painted it with some color that suited your decor or whimsy. But that wood is so nice that you have to show it off a bit. How about a nice amber shellac? My two cents.
Your key rack wood is so clear and free of knots it should just have a clear finish. No stain and definitely no paint ---- not even SC red this time. That elderly drill turned out beautifully. It works smoothly and I noticed that it doesn't wobble or have sloppy movement, unlike some cheapies ive seen. Your key rack design is very imaginative. Thanks
First thing a thought when I saw the key holder is Patriotic! I've been thinking two days about where your key thing was 😂 I wish I could connect an actual old telephone to my iPhone, plug it in or something, and use the old phone to call. It's probably possible but my electrical skills are nowhere near what's needed to make something like that.
The egg beater drill (in the UK it is a wheel brace) was used even for precision engineering in the 1930s and 40s. A great Sheffield company was Chapman's who produced a fantastic drill with both straight and pistol grip handles until taken over by Stanley. Great video and for the key rack I would just clear coat that beautiful wood.
Neat key holder, if I had one like that I would stain it cheery, in honor of my 100 ft tall cherry tree that got blown over during a storm we had a few months ago, I'm sad to see it go. And What's more American than a cheery tree and our founding father's honesty to his father for chopping one down?
Great idea on your key holder. You could hide your tool money in it to. I love the egg beater drills. Between them and the yankee drill and drivers you don’t need electricity to charge your tools. As a kid in my dads cabinet shop I remember all the employees using them. They are tools worth having and using. I Enjoy your channel.
Hey John, I noticed the can of Huberd's shoe grease in the background. Love this stuff! Just finished a full day of shop maintenance; wax table saw surface, cleaning saw blades, compressor oil change etc. And you know, you gotta take care of those shop boots as well! Another great video, thanks.
Great design on your key holder. You can hide that tool money in it to. The eggbeater drill is a great tool. I have a few. I remember as a kid in my dads cabinet shop, his employees using them. The good part you don’t have to charge them. I enjoy your channel.
It is downright impressive for UPS to break that handset. Perhaps we should start a betting pool, try to mail each other the most durable items on Earth, wager on the likelihood of being broken. I ordered a large ingot of Babbitt off of eBay, when it arrived it no longer had any packaging, there was a replacement sticker directly on the lead! And they still managed to make the great big dent in it. They have to be competing with these packages, some type of Warehouse Olympics
Very nice restoration! I recently saw on a video someone took a hot glue gun and put a big glob of hot glue on the teeth of a pare of channel locks so it wouldn’t mare up a brass bolt. It worked perfectly. They had to wait for it to dry I guess but with how well it looked like it worked I think it was worth it. I have been waiting for the opportunity to try it haha. Have a good one!!
That's one of my favorite tricks, using soda cans as shims. A lot of people don't realize it, but aluminum cans are remarkably precise. As long as you avoid the seam, they are pretty consistently 5 thou
I recently got an egg beater drill. it works really smoothly but it only has two bits in the handle and it does not have its side handle where you grip it while you turn the crank. when Spring gets here I am going to restore it. Thanks to you and this video I now know how to take proper care of the chuck!
I inhereted a pin spanner like those you showed. The drill bit method has also saved me a few times, too. It has always amazed me how well that type of drill actually works. I have a couple in my collection awaiting restorations, but niether are anything special. I intend to experiment with the restorations but they both work as is. I am stumped on the finish for your key box but I love the design!
Nice key rack design John. I think you could take a little idea that Jon Crane did with the towel rack where he did the Japanese flame finish and then put the coat of floor finish on it. 👍🇺🇸 Roger
I'm a woodworker by trade. And in my opinion, with the clear grain wood. (Douglas Fir?) I would recommend using, or at least I would use. Just your regular Shellac (preferably not the amber). But if your wanting to stain it. Maybe an ebony, however I would wipe it off as soon as you apply it. So you still get all the grain through the stain. And I would do just a few inches of an area at a time. Or cover it quickly one side at a time. Then wipe that side of before moving to the next. Anyhow jmo. Thanks for another great video.. take it easy. Lol, I love the hanging up on someone on a pay phone. I remember that for sure.
That was a quick 19 min.. Good content, good information, great video as always S.C.. I don't know how you manage to do 3 videos per week for years.. Thx S.C. for all u do.. God Bless you my friend...
Im partial to 8N Ford tractors so I think a red and cream color would look good on the key rack. Thats a good tip for the chuck disassembly. I remember when I first started driving my mother always making sure I had a quarter in my pocket in case I had car trouble I could call from a pay phone, lol.
The sound people heard when hanging up on them with corded phones gave emphasis to how you felt. Your trick with the pin nut is definitely something I’m going to keep in mind. I always keep the wrenches from grinders since most use pin nuts so I have random sizes all around the garage.
For the handset connections, I was surprised to see the red wire on a T terminal... T stands for tip, like the tip of a headphone plug, and R for ring, like the ring or barrel portion of a plug. Who else remembers the old Red, Ring, Right when wiring up the old phone jacks. So rare nowadays!
I always go pink with purple polka-dots. First, it shows me how much I don't complete on time. And second, its an incentive to complete the next job on time. LOL I do like the flip shelf with the hidden row of keys. Good idea.
I like a light stain like golden oak for your key caddy, that would show off your keys and look nice. The phone looks great and the hand drill turned out beautiful.
I love hand drills of all types. Yours turned out great and makes me want to find another to restore even though I have too many now. This seems to be a re-occuring theme. The keyboard is awesome, I see a flat or satin medium gray color on it.
What a great way to crate a Spanner Wrench!..I have an Egg Beater Drill exactly like the one shown, never thought about fixing the chuck and yes, it is difficult to wratchet down on a bit.
Love your design scout really cool it’s gotta be red white and blue All day god bless America 🇺🇸 the shining light on the hill the bulb 💡 Is a bit dim at the moment 😆 but I’m sure soon we will be back to full Lumens DJT 🦅 great video the drill was cool also fantastic stuff god bless take care 🦅👍🗽🙏🇳🇿🇺🇸💡
I have an old belt in the shop that I keep for just that exact reason so I don't Mar up a surface also putting hot glue on your pliers and a few dips of plastidip on a spare pair of pliers is a good thing to have for a makeshift soft jaw
I would use something clear. The wood is beautiful. Really like the design. The egg beater turned out nice. My son has one given to him from friend. It was very rusty and the main wood handle is in bad shape. He cleaned up the metal so maybe it wouldn't rust any more. But trying to figure out how he can make a new wood handle without a lathe. So he Is on hold for now. Stay safe and healthy my friend. Thanks
Hey John, was thinking in the last video when you showed up the pay phone. Not sure what it would entail, but mounting that somewhere in the house and converting it into a landline would be really cool!
How about a thin red and blue stains with a clear stripe in between. Just enough to be subtly noticeable. You could even have clear stars in the red and blue stripes. Love the cleanup on the drill and the tips on how to do it. Jim
Nice NOS phone replacement. Hearing the dial tone brings back memories. The eggbeater drill looks terrific now. Nice design for the key holder. I like the hidden part. I like natural finish on wood to show the wood grain/patterns. If you do want a stain, how about the deep red mahogany stain 357MagDad has used on some of his restorations. Dave.
You did it again, great video. I enjoy them all, but I love that tip on making your own pin wrench. Very cleaver, a tool I would hate to buy for the one or very few times I would need it. Thanks again, and keep up the good work.
Kind of a funny story about those old phones. When my parents got divorced, and they each moved, my dad discovered that the very yellowed rotary phones throughout our house my entire childhood were in fact rentals from the phone company. Presumably it was surprisingly affordable, he had not noticed for 19 years. When he did the math after the fact, he worked out we had spent about $2,000 per handset. At the time, you could not sell a rotary phone for a dollar. Ironically, their value is going up, they have become collectible
That drill looks fantastic now! And an excellent design on the keyholder. I sure miss old phones. Especially rotary phones. Something much more enjoyable about using the dial vs pushing buttons. Great video!
I like your key board the best for practicality and the hidden keys. Just to be different I would like to see it done with a very dark, almost black, wood stain.
Nice job on the eggbeater drill. I have an old one that belonged to my father-in-law. It works great and I love using it. It could use a cleanup though and seeing your video has inspired me to get to it. Also, really like your key holder. I was going to say Scoutcrafter Red for the color, but that clear grain is too nice to cover with paint. I have been using English Chestnut stain lately. Might be an alternative to the Gunstock.
I've had 2 bikes delivered by mail. One was a titanium framed Motobecan that someone punched a hole through the box and keyed the crossbar of the frame. The other some one punched a hole in the Ebike's box and pulled off that end cap that is crimped onto the disc brake cable. It makes it harder to properly adjust the disc brakes and it just shows you how some asshats really work at defiling other people's hard-earned property. They were double thick cardboard and you can tell it was maliciously purposeful. They were also 2 of my first 4 brand new bikes I have ever purchased in my lifetime. I never complained but I'd sure like to rip them a new one. I like those hand drills for electronics work. Great control. One of them I thought my father had just hacked on a new old hammer handle but it turns out it was cocked to one side so it could drill a hole really close to an obstacle like a wall. As for the finish issue I have a few suggestions. First off I am in love with Golden Oak and I refinished my 1950s oak plank floor with it when I resanded it down to fresh wood. Then I used Deft as a clearcoat. Whatever color you use you could always darken it up with a colored wax then use naptha to remove it if you should decide you went too dark.
John- Unfortunately too many crimes are gone unpunished... I always feel what goes around comes around and Karma is the greatest equalizer of them all...
I remember drilling holes with a drill like that with my dear old Dad, we used to have stuff to fix in walls called Rawlplastic not sure if you had it in the US made of asbestos, I'd mixit up in my hands as a kid!!! Loved the key caddy, I was looking at the gap and thinking unlike you then you revealed the hidden set!! Great work Scoutcrafter 👍👍👍🇺🇸🇬🇧
I remember using them when I was a kid in west Texas. My town took down all the pay phones when I was in middle school if I remember correctly. I’m 25 and I am the last generation in my family to use a pay phone.
If I had the space I would try to get one of the public pay phones we had over here, they had this eggshell looking cover that made them very distinct looking. You never disappoint, I really like the secret compartment on your keyboard. I think it would look great with a clear coat. Thanks for the videoJohn, take care!!
I think natural would go nice with your keyholder John although just like you and gunstock finish I prefer cherry something about that dark brown with hint of red finish is pleasing to me.
Excellent key caddy design and execution! I didn’t see that coming, but you nailed it. Use golden oak stain to bring out the grain but keep the light background so the keys are easy to see. I liked your drill restoration. A lot of love shown there. Do you sharpen drill bits? How is it best done?
It was a fun episode. What a beautiful drill. I remember my grandfather had one similar to that. I think the wheel and handle were red. I had a lot of fun as a kid drilling through pieces of wood with that thing.
That pay phone seems like ancient history. Remember making a long distance call? The operator would tell you the price for three minutes. As you put in the money she (they were all women) would add up the total just from the sounds the different coins made. When you put in enough, the call would go through. That hidden row of hooks was great. Just the place for the keys to the Batmobile, the Bat cave, the Batcopter, etc
Enjoyed the video. I think if decided to build a key holder like yours I would have to make it 8 feet wide. Too many keys.
Last week, my wife brought home an old eggbeater drill. Perfect timing! Nice job on the key board. Very creative. Thanks John!
In regards to the pleasure of hanging up on someone with old phone handsets, I recall the hours of fun had busting coworkers chops by ending a call on a plant phone with:
"Oh one more thing..."
Or
"Hey listen to this..."
...and then violently hanging up. Good times!
The feeling of a operator telling you another quarter needed to be put in the phone or the call would be over
You have a beautiful sounding knob, John! The trick to egg-beater drills IS getting a perpendicular hole - so its the perfect training tool. I still have my late Uncle's Stanley Drill. Handy if you want to makes holes at 03.00 hours!

As soon as we started talking handset damage, I knew we would see the "Goodfellas" footage.
John! Thank ya!
Finally! A key board that holds more than 3 or 4 sets of keys! I’m glad to see you have as many keys as we do. Nice job!
I love that little mettle square at the end it looks so usable for on the job tight quarters (welding).
Great video ❤️🇬🇧🇺🇲👍🏻✌🏻 freedom 🇨🇦 truckers 🇬🇧🇺🇲

Give that key organizer a nice clear coat. Love that drill. Great episode !

Mrs Magdad liked the hidden compartment on your key holder!
nice key caddy. trying to catch up on the great Scout Crafter.

Awesome key holder design! Nice phone. Wow. That is a beautiful drill. Great video. 👍
A Red dye for the keyboard? I always learn things, great show!
Nice refresh on the drill. Classic!
Beautiful job on the drill John.
Love the secret compartment on the keyboard John absolutely amazing :-)
Very nice restoration! I recently saw on a video someone took a hot glue gun and put a big glob of hot glue on the teeth of a pare of channel locks so it wouldn’t mare up a brass bolt. Is it just a surname? Or do butchers use wax for something?
What color? Are you kidding me????
Scout crafter red of course 👍😁
Have a Jesus filled day everyone

Tint some lacquer a bronze or gold color and spray several thin coats on. For the key hanger.

Nice key rack design John. I think you could take a little idea that Jon Crane did with the towel rack where he did the Japanese flame finish and then put the coat of floor finish on it. 👍🇺🇸 Roger
Love the drill, but the key rack even more…great episode!
I'm a woodworker by trade. And in my opinion, with the clear grain wood. (Douglas Fir?) I would recommend using, or at least I would use. Just your regular Shellac (preferably not the amber). I’m a huge fan of the gunstock as well. We definitely want to see the key holder once you pick a color. Oh, and that drill came out great.
That was a quick 19 min.. Good content, good information, great video as always S.C.. I don't know how you manage to do 3 videos per week for years.. Thx S.C. for all u do.. God Bless you my friend...
All great topics today, keep up the great video’s.

What a great way to crate a Spanner Wrench!..I have an Egg Beater Drill exactly like the one shown, never thought about fixing the chuck and yes, it is difficult to wratchet down on a bit.
Thats a great idea, hidden key holder section, i would stain it gunstock, or leave it as is plain. Good post.
Love your design scout really cool it’s gotta be red white and blue
All day god bless America 🇺🇸 the shining light on the hill the bulb 💡
Is a bit dim at the moment 😆 but I’m sure soon we will be back to full
Lumens DJT 🦅 great video the drill was cool also fantastic stuff god bless take care 🦅👍🗽🙏🇳🇿🇺🇸💡

Beautiful phones. Ive never seen the inside of a phone box. Very intriguing.
Public phones resulted in robust immune systems.
Great looking key board, I think it needs some kind of decoration (stencil) on the front then clear coat 🛠👍😊
Great teaching video John. You missed your calling, you could have been a teacher in Queens Vocational HS. 👍
Hey John, was thinking in the last video when you showed up the pay phone. Not sure what it would entail, but mounting that somewhere in the house and converting it into a landline would be really cool!
This was really good with lots of helpful information! Thanks to you, Scott and Joel for this tutorial.
Hey John, love the hidden compartment. I lean Green 9x out of 10. I could see that baby in a dark forest green with a coat or 2 of clear.
Dave.
Great job on the drill! Looks and functions as good as new!
You did it again, great video. I enjoy them all, but I love that tip on making your own pin wrench. Very cleaver, a tool I would hate to buy for the one or very few times I would need it. Thanks again, and keep up the good work.
Kind of a funny story about those old phones. It’s true! They were rentals here too! Cheap but over time it adds up! 😂👍
That drill looks fantastic now! And an excellent design on the keyholder. I sure miss old phones. Especially rotary phones. Something much more enjoyable about using the dial vs pushing buttons. Great video!
Worst part of a rotary phone is your finger slipping out of the number too soon so you had to hang up and start over.
@@BenButler1 hahaha yep! I had forgotten about that aspect of it!
So you think it's cold ! Looks like spring to me. Nicely done on the drill.
HaHa - before you showed the clip from Goodfellas I had that image in mind when you were talking about the pleasure of hanging up.
GOOD ONE, KEEP SAFE AND WARM...
Wow, what a terrific video. Great tips and a bunch of other stuff. Very enjoyable.
That Lexan is some Tuff Stuff, maybe someday I'll tell you about the door I made for the Backhoe out of a piece of Bulletproof Glass.
I think natural would go nice with your keyholder John although just like you and gunstock finish I prefer cherry something about that dark brown with hint of red finish is pleasing to me.
I like a clear satin finish on my projects..nice design on the key board!
Congrats on the new phone receiver!
Nice key hanger.best space utilization idea
Now I gotta find a square like that one!
I bought them in a set of three but one was off! 🙁. Made in India I think- Never again!
Min Wax Ipswich Pine is my go to for wood like that
I also wondered about using a grinder wrench and a drill bit, and use the wrench against the drill bit to turn it. Just a thought.
Excellent key caddy design and execution! I didn’t see that coming, but you nailed it. Use golden oak stain to bring out the grain but keep the light background so the keys are easy to see. I liked your drill restoration. A lot of love shown there. Do you sharpen drill bits? How is it best done?
Good to get a new headset for the payphone keep caddy idea great youdecide on a color the drill cleaned up nice been year's since I've used one
Wood colour is great. Sometimes just have to go with how it comes
Glad I found your channel I really enjoy it and look forward to the next video!
Great video.
Love the cordless drill’s and phone
It was a fun episode. What a beautiful drill. I remember my grandfather had one similar to that. I think the wheel and handle were red. I had a lot of fun as a kid drilling through pieces of wood with that thing.
Your key-box is fantastic. I would use Red Mahogany. 👍
