The Joy of Watching Scoutcrafter: My son Joe (12) had been telling me for weeks that he was the 19th viewer on a recent. Scoutcrafter video. Today we kept checking the channel on our Apple TV. Boom there was the new video. We clicked on it ... only 1 view so far. So we now hold the bragging rights to being the number 2 viewer in the world premier of this video! We bask in the glory. 😁 Scoutcrafter you are world class. Thank you .
Hey John many many thanks for the mention and link!! Terry's spanners are aircraft spanners I believe they used them on hurricanes and spitfires in Ww2! Well if that's not your entry to the challenge, wow, can't wait for the proper one! Not that good at wood work so will be a proper challenge for me!! Thank you again!!
I like you just talk about tools and not politics even though you are clearly a proud American. Good job. You have a great channel and I hope others can learn a lesson from you.
I have had a giant pile of steel rods and bars and so on leaning up against my furnace for years, now. Always in the way and occasionally CRASHING! all over the floor. Thank you so much for suggesting the ceiling method of storage!!! My shop is in a post-and-beam building with high ceilings so it will work amazingly well. The best part is that I can use some of the steel to make the racks. Brilliant!
I built my first tote in about 1977 as a first year carpenters apprentice using scrap materials from a jobsite. Although I don't use it to carry tools anymore I still have and cherish it after 43 years.
Tool Tote! Fantastic! This was my very first project I ever did in my father's basement. I was 6 years old and my father made all the power tool cuts. I nailed that thing together so crooked and so janky I didn't need to put my name on it because it was so distinctive and nasty. I LOVED that thing for the next 20 years. Thanks for sparking that cool memory!
Found this tool tote at a local thrift store, comes from National Lumber that hasn't been around in my neighborhood in many years. I loved the builder graphic on the inside and the original $7.97 price tag from 1980.
It's called the ONE WAY lathe and when I first started getting into wood turning I went to a few shows and there was always one or two at the show. It is the Cadillac of lathes! Super big, super smooth and not cheap! LOL We would all drool around it! =D
To all the professional and fancy wood workers out there , just watch what Scoutcrafter does. The one he just threw together is just a warm - up for him. He may be one of the most under rated wood workers on RUclips. The reason for that is because he concentrates on tool restorations. I would like to see participation from other wood working channels on this challenge. Just go back and find the mallet challenge that Scoutcrafter did, you'll see what I mean. He won that one. I think I have shovel handle laying around. I may give this challenge a shot.
Very cool Scoutcrafter! Love the tool tote. The measuring rod handle is genius. I gotta get busy looking for an old mop I can cut off and throw in my neighbors yard! 😜
What a funny coincidence, I just started working on a tool tote last week and am about halfway done. Although I wish I had seen your video first since I like some of the design elements in yours. I hope I can meet the deadline for this challenge. Thanks for the great videos!
Just found your channel mate, from tool addict in the UK. I'm going to try and take part in the challenge thank you for organising it I do love these challenges. Kind regards Karl Karlpopewoodcraft 😊
One Good Turn, looks like the perfect thing to turn my attention to. I've gone media silent for the most part. I might even get my woodworking on for this challenge. Another Fantastic episode John.
Hi Scout, realy nice tote, the mat in the bottom is a good idea, The Terry tool company made alot of stuff for the cycle trade, bycycle clips, spanners, also famous for their folding sets of BA spanners, magneto spanners ,etc, any fasteners on the old radio equipment was BA over here, my ĺate father in law a radar man in ww2 gave me some BA spanners that apparently fell into his pocket one day, lol , he was torpedoed twice and still lived to tell a good tale, he's sorely missed. Thanks for the video, and your service, Semper fi, stay safe mate, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart.uk.
Nicely done! I love old school tool boxes. I always salvage them from the trash. I also save mop handles but I really search for long handle shovels. I switch handles with my snow shovels, saves my back from aching
What a great twist on a common tool tote! plenty of good ideas but we will have to come up with our own, you have thrown down the gauntlet sir, and we accept!
On your challenge, I’ve already made a few of these. One for my common nails but more importantly, I’ve made a few for my grandsons. For whatever they want to put in the tote, matchbox cars, LEGO’s and when they get older their tools. I like some of the modifications that some of your followers have made to the common tool tote.
Nice tote mate. Some pretty impressive features on it. I’ve made dozens of totes in my 64 years, (none as fancy as yours), and all have been thrown out as I don’t have the room to keep them in my small shed. I use a canvas give away from a power tool manufacturer that works for jobs around the yard and can be screwed up into a corner when not in use. All my tools that I buy to restore are put in a large box and the restored ones are put in another box. Space is at a premium 😢. Love your rafters too. Reminds me of yesterday restoring a set of garden shears when I looked up and 6” above my head was a spider the size of your hand. Would have been 8-9” across. Bloody Australia!
Love that handle! When I was just starting out doing home projects my wife’s grandfather would always come to help. He taught me so much. One thing he showed me was how to make a story stick. All it was was a scrap piece of would that he would mark up for repetitive cuts. He called it a story stick. Your handle reminded me of that.
“Throw the mop head in the neighbours yard”. Haha. I don’t have a tool tote. I would normally use a plastic bucket. I wonder if you can stain and shellac plastic?
Loved the BA (British Association) spanners. Herbert Terry was a company that made a number of eclectic items, the most famous being the Anglepoise lamps which used to be on every draughtsman's desk. They also made little coiled wire pen and pencil holders to fit into the top pocket of a coat or jacket. If you ever went into a works stores you could guarantee that the storeman would be wearing a Brown warehouse coat and have Terry clips in his top pocket.
Broom sticks are great to make hex key/ Allen drivers. Cut off the short end of the Allen key, drill a smaller hole in the desired length of new wooden handle to the size of the main shaft and epoxy in place. Sand the handle into what ever shape you want, I usually just round mine. Also, if you have a very small driver (of any type) with a small handle, you can do the same and sink the small handle into a larger broomstick handle for more torque and comport. They last for ever and you will love using them. I always leave mine the natural color, but I'm sure you'd stain them with red paint!
Can't wait to see what the entries look like. And everyone better pull up their socks. If ScoutCrafter is showing you this quick little 2 day build, using mostly scraps - wait until you see what he'll build in a month, and with the good wood! I picture wooden mechanized gears and integrated lights pilfered from an old vacuum machine or who knows. It's gonna get good...and I bet there will be some Red White and Blue. And GO!
John, thanks for the kind words! I’m glad that you’re enjoying the book. And I enjoyed today’s show - my dad used to carry his tools in a tote like the one you made today. I’m also sending you something to help organize your loose hardware. Let me know what you think of it.
Great tool caddy build ScoutCrafter! I especially like the measuring stick/handle. My rafters are packed as well but maybe not as much of the good stuff you have.
On it! Hey John great looking tool box. Twrecks is a great guy for sure. Love the patina patrol. Jim sent some good looking tools for sure. Off to come up with some tool tote ideas. 👍👍👍
Excellent idea with the handle being a measuring device! You had me laughing! And I thought I was the only one who cut pieces of wood and hung them by my chair just to smell them :^))
😂 I’ve been telling the little lady I needed a lathe. Might be a tough sale though. Great challenge, I hope it warms up so I can participate. Anyway loved the miniatures Thank You for sharing John
I made a quick tool tote very much like the one you just made (but cruder) when I was in Junior High Woodshop one day. At the end of class I took it up to get my grade and the teacher said "Hey I can use that, I'll give you 5 bucks for it".....I sold it on the spot, 5 bucks was great money to a 13 year old kid in the 80s.
5 bucks was a jack pot for a kid in the 80's. Join this challenge and let's see how you have progressed. What's todays equivalent of $5 in the 80's? Perhaps you can get what it's worth.
Man, I told my wife we needed a basement just for the rafters, though a bit tricky here in Florida with the water table a couple of feet below the surface. I bet your neighbor just uploaded a video showing all the mop heads he has stored with a comment along the lines of "I don't know where they are coming from, but you never know when they will be useful." Can't wait to see the results of the Challenge!
Yeah, I can empathize with collecting useful materials. I recently dismantled an office copier from the the 80's to salvage all the shafts, motors, gears, etc. It took three days to do. Those spinners are great with the British standards stamped on them. Maybe you can find some nut and bolts to go with them! Thanks for the challenge! I'll see what I can do.
Thank God It's Friday and I got my tote from the Re-store a few years ago. Went to town expressly for one and stopped at Tractor Supply but the still small Voice said go to the Re-store so there was an older plastic tote and a pair of Western Auto jack stands. That tote has had at least 50 pounds of tools in it and not failed yet. The plastic handle inserts came loose but are firmly duct taped back in position. So have a great weekend yourself and GBWYall, John CS! That was probably my last Re-store purchase. Can't find GOOD junk any more. And I save old shovel and rake handles too,.
Rudy that was an alignment disc- How it worked was you would lay a straight edge across the side of your blade and then draw a line (Pencil) on the polyurethane disc. Now as you fed your work into the blade you had a visual reference that showed if you were lined up or not before the wood came in contact with the blade. I have never used it... =D
Challenges are great, love to see what all your awesome subscribers come up with. What that’s not what the rafters in the basement are made for?? I might give this challenge a shot!
Damn, I have the same table saw. A customer gave it to me years ago. It was my first personal table saw. I new when I saw how forward the blade is on the table 😀
I just got back from Lowe's. 2×4's went up another $2 from just a couple of months ago. I don't want to be a hoarder but it is difficult to throw anything away.
Thank you for new challenge! I'll have to put in some toughts since all DIY stores are closed here till the forseable future. It's a nightmare, I'm going to try and participate tough! Guess who's got a Yankee North Bros 1555 in the mail this week. Even my girlfriend thinks it's a pretty thing. I hope you'll have a great weekend Scoutcrafter!
That vise looks like a machinist student's project. Probably not super precise but for small odd parts on the drill press it looks square enough to be tilted sideways (MrPete has done this a couple times with a larger one). Maybe also good for models or holding small parts for grinding like parallel pliers. I have a 4" proto adjustable wrench I keep on my keys, so that tiny auto wrench just makes me want to ruin it with a hole in the end haha.
Hey Scoutcrafter. You just havta make a miniature version now for your tiny tools you were showing. Then, Bobs your Uncle! 👍😊 They were the bees knees! 🐝
If this tote isn't even your entry, should we even dare take the challange! LOL! .......me thinks so!Lots of fun, thanks John. BTW: where do we send pictures?
How does the challenge work? This is my first time. I am making a tote and making a video of it. Do I add a hashtag to it...or is there some other way to "submit" my entry?
If that wasn't your entry then I can't wait for your entry to the challenge , those used to be big back in their day remember people having those carry wood boxes in their trucks then they came up with those small metal or plastic boxes even buckets now they have those linen type carry bags pretty good you can put them under your seat with emergency tools it will fit anywhere
i thought the yardstick/handle was a quick release nightstick! your flag flying out front IS good news, that is something to be proud of....even if we are told daily by all the "experts" we are wrong.
Hi Scoutcrafter Where do we send a picture of our completed project when it's done. Looking forward to the challenge. Have a Jesus filled day Greg in Michigan
So it's actually Wednesday there or is it really Friday? You throw the mop head in the neighbors yard? I use those dollar tree door mats in my tool boxes.
I thought it was going to be a birdhouse, you mentioned it before in another video. Next wood working challenge should be a 1 board challenge or something like that
A design option for the tote - We would make the same basic design but attach the bottom under the end pieces and let the bottom extend past to form a shelf. This way you can lash an object to the ledge of indiscriminate size like a round paint can, square box of nails or larger tool (using rubber bands or a bungee cord) that can be easily swapped out depending on your project... I love the yard stick handle! Great job. Google R/C flight box - you'll find a million different designs... www.westwalesmodels.co.uk/WebRoot/Store3/Shops/es114103_es121994722150/4C49/41BA/06CD/F0A5/E7A0/0A0F/1117/F05C/l-irvfb01.jpeg
Stephen- I remember making my first flight box specifically for my .049 powered glider! I still have it! That shelf was used to hold the fuel can! =D Good times!
I'm not taking up the challenge. At last count I have two wooden tool totes in the basement, and one in my work van. There is also a case I made for my first skill saw, a case I made for a Porter-Cable screw gun , a case adapted from a wooden box for wine bottles that holds a B&D Professional 3/8 variable speed reversing drill, and a tool box that my father-in-law made when he needed to bring tools to the property my in-laws owned in New York State where he slowly converted a home built travel trailer into a cabin.
If you turn the old house upside down I would think I was still in the basement with all the stuff u have downstairs and in the upper attic (basement). LOL. Bust out the old turntables ....

Hey Scoutcrafter. You just havta make a miniature version now for your tiny tools you were showing. Then, Bobs your Uncle! 👍😊 They were the bees knees! 🐝
Carl I was thinking that!
If this tote isn't even your entry, should we even dare take the challange! LOL! .......me thinks so!Lots of fun, thanks John. BTW: where do we send pictures?
Lloyd Bicycleguy@aol.com I will talk more about it in 2 weeks!!!! Don't rush! =D
Great job This should be fun thanks again for the great video
Hahhaha patina control, that's great!
We are now 'Pine Sap Sniffers'. Thanks John.
Good news is really needed
How does the challenge work? This is my first time. I am making a tote and making a video of it. Do I add a hashtag to it...or is there some other way to "submit" my entry?
Great video! I would of never thought a handle could be a yardstick. 😃👍
50°!!! The wind is gusting to 50mph today in Kansas
Wow! I remember when Dorothy had some high winds years back! 😉
Great video and project! Thanks so much!
Hello from Hoover, Alabama !!!
Hey! Just a small doubt, where to upload the photos for the challenge :)
Bicycleguy@aol.com I will talk more about it in 2 weeks! Thanks!
...another good start for a '21 challenge..stay safe and enjoy...
i thought the yardstick/handle was a quick release nightstick! your flag flying out front IS good news, that is something to be proud of....even if we are told daily by all the "experts" we are wrong.
The "Experts" are in for a rude awakening.. =D
looks like my girl friend is getting a tool tote for Valentine Day, I mean flower tote!
How did you know what I am currently building for my workbench???? Guess I need to get it in gear and finish it up
Patina Petrol....Lol...Good job sir...

Very good stuff!
We got 21 off and rolling yay. It's how we do it here 😎lol. Have a great weekend everyone and be safe out there 🐱👍
So it's actually Wednesday there or is it really Friday? You throw the mop head in the neighbors yard? I use those dollar tree door mats in my tool boxes.
Just uploaded my entry! Maybe I should change my name to "Professional Procrastinator"... :D
If you have some pitures of your tote where do you send them
Huub Bicycleguy@aol.com I will talk more about it in 2 weeks
I thought it was going to be a birdhouse, you mentioned it before in another video. Next wood working challenge should be a 1 board challenge or something like that
great video john 👍🇨🇦
A good start to the New Year the due date is the day before my birthday looms like I give myself a present
A challenge! Woo!
great tote
The little wrenches may have been part of a bicycle repair kit carried on the bike when riding.
Could I borrow one of those broomsticks? My ex has her current one in the shop and needs transportation.
If you turn the old house upside down I would think I was still in the basement with all the stuff u have downstairs and in the upper attic (basement). LOL. Bust out the old turntables ....
Tom when it comes time for me to move, some moving company is going to make a nice profit!!! =D
