Well done saving the mouse Scout, I hate to see any animals suffer. I think I’d call him “lucky”. I love that hacksaw and it came up beautifully. BTW when I have polished metal parts I’ve tried car polish waxes ect but the best thing I have found for long term protection is Rustoleum 2x Ultra Cover clear, it sprays very nicely, dries fast and just a very light coat is all you need. It even helps make the painted parts pop. Cheers mate, Stuart.
That was a great episode. Love those hacksaw’s. I’m gonna have to keep an eye out for some of them. Thanks so much for sharing and have a great weekend.
Thanks for the heads up on the water alarm. 2 years ago, our water heater sprang a leak. Our water heater is in the bathroom behind a closed door. We didn't know that it was leaking until the water showed up 6' away. We needed to replace the flooring and my wife decided that we needed to remodel the bathroom. $25,000 later everything was fixed. If we had the water alarm, I would be a lot wealthier. The alarm is on order now. Thanks for the video.
Very interesting show today John. I never heard of the invisible pen and it makes sense to have one along with the uv light. I think we should start calling you St. Francis of College Point!
Liquid laundry detergent will often fluoresce when hit by a black light. They add optical brighteners that absorb UV light and reflect it as visible light. This makes the colors of the clothes seem brighter. Shine a black light at most liquid laundry detergents and they'll look just like the ink from that invisible marker.
The black light reminded me of going in the back of a Spencer's Gift store back in the early 70's. I had to rescue a small bunny from our cat. Great clean-up on the hacksaw. Thanks for sharing your expertise John. Have a Happy New Year
In Germany we have Aqua Stop in the washing machines and dish washers. That means there are sensors in the bottom of the appliances, the hose is connected to a solenoid valve and is inside of a flexible conduit together with the cable for the solenoid valve. It's also registering the amount of water running through the valve. So if the hose bursts, the valve will close automatically. That means you can leave the water valve open on any time, and you can run the appliances without supervising them. That system was invented in the 1980s. Of course due to insurances that would not cover damages caused by burst hoses, and people running the appliances without supervising them. The insurances even tries sueing the manufacturers of the appliances. So they came up with that system, it was tested by independent testing organisations and they stated that it would work perfectly in that case.
That’s such a great idea- I know they make automatic valves but much too expensive to incorporate into an appliance. I always shut off my water to the machine after using it. 😃👍
Your such a great person, caring about all creatures as well as man.May God continue to Bless you in the New Year.As they use to call me at work"Father Frank"
Hi John, if you want to drill a hole in a hack-saw blade, cut the blade to size you need it, heat the end of the blade cherry red, the end where you want to drill the hole. Let the blade cool down very slowly. When the blade cools down to room temperature it will be easy to drill. To harden the blade again. Heat it up again and quench it in motor. Hope this helps.
John, you're a better man than me for saving the mouse. I have a terrible problem with them in my work shop. They have ruined many paper items including some valuable manuals ( I have since put them in mouse proof containers) and chewed wiring. My property is next to crop fields- I recently opened a drawer to find it full of this year's soy bean crop😅. Let's just say the mice receive a different fate 🫣
Unfortunately the mice can wreak havoc in certain areas- Upstate they have taken over one of my buildings and damaged more than a few items. However here in the city my home is a sanctuary for all creatures big and small. 😃👍
“Make their money on the blades”….a sales philosophy used by Gillette successfully for decades, also computer printer manufacturers like HP. “Build it and they will come” Awesome video!
I have a drill bit that will drill that stuff. I'm not home at this time, but if you're interested when I get home in a few days, I will take a look and send it over. I've used it to drill through taps and other tools, to pin them (like turning an adjustable crescent wrench into a custom size open box wrench). That's actually its purposes to drill out broken taps.
Hi John. Great job on that hacksaw. I have one of those small space hacksaws.its about 40 years old now. Love the uv info. Did not know about invisible ink though. Nice to know. HAPPY NEW YEAR. 👍👍👍❤🤠...
I really like the invisible ink and black light. your hacksaws are very interesting too. The one you restored is a very handy one. I bought an air powered hacksaw that gets into tight places. I have several hacksaws but I’m not sure I have a thin one like yours. That is one lucky mouse, you have a big heart all the way around. My wife has already put two plates of dry food and two bowls of wet food out for the stray cats. You have a happy New Year! Thank You
Great restoration on the hack saw! The UV light is neat and can be used with some glues that are only activated with this kind of light. Thanks for sharing this.
You sold me on checking hotel sheets and spreads with the UV light! I like to travel quite often. I already have a 2-set ordered for about $17 (including tax) ordered. Also, if the Buck Bros. blade is the same company that makes the chisels Lowes sells, I highly recommend the chisels for people on a budget. Scary sharp out of the box. Thanks.
I used to make hand saws and the only bit that would cut cleanly through that hard spring steel was carbide. They were expensive but worth every penny because they worked so just so darn well!!
FYI - Frozen Tool Swap - Jan 4 2025 in Bethany CT on Rte 42 at Lake View Lodge. Listed on Facebook Marketplace. Opens at 10:00 am. Free admission. Nice of you to feed the cats and save the mouse!! Thanks for the video!!
John, I had the 007 spy briefcase as well. I believe the briefcase had a way to take a picture using a lens on the side to take a picture without opening the case.
SC, You can drill a hole through a hacksaw blade using a drill press and a new high speed drill bit. It does not require a special bit - I have done so many times, just apply a bit of pressure. Do not try it with a hand held drill. That said, to drill many holes you should use a cobalt or carbide drill bit but for a couple of holes a standard HS will work. Happy New Year!
A technique I have heard of is to cut the head off a masonry nail and put that in the drill press. With the blade secured from turning, use the nail to get the spot you want to drill red hot, then allow it to cool, removing the temper in that spot. Then a quality drill should be able to drill the hole w/o damaging the drill. I recommend the Drill Hog bits, as they are USA made, and great quality. They come with a lifetime Guarantee even on the smaller sizes, and are available in various materials. They also have step drills down to 1/8" Happy Drilling!
I already bought some uranium glass, but we already had a lot of decorative glass so we got a UV flashlight to look at the glass we bought and I started to wonder if we already had any other glass that would glow, so I took the UV flashlight and shined it on everything and the only thing that showed up was a marble in a jar of marbles on the shelf! 😊😊😊

I think his name is Buttons. Not sure why, it just came to me. I just picked up one of those low profile hacksaws at a recent estate sale. I need to do a clean-up, yours looks great. -Tom from Pittsburgh.
Wow, those hack saws are very cool, nice job on the resto too. My Dad was a guy who LOVED Lubriplate grease. Anyway I wonder if you could heat the ends of a hack saw blade to remove the temper, then drill a hole?
Really nice saw that you restored there Scoutcrafter, have you any idea of the manufacturer of the other two, I have one here in the UK and have only seen them today and I think Big Vic or George may have shown one, never seen another over here. Good for you saving the little guy, how about in honour of Big Vic we call the mouse little Vic? Happy New year to you and everyone out there ❤👍👍👍🇺🇸🇬🇧✌️
Thanks John, great show, I must get hold of one of those UV Lights they work great ! Those close quarter hacksaws are so useful mine is a Bahco, it's worth holding out for an alloy frame I bought a Dewalt one recently and the frame was plastic I was not impressed as it was coloured silver to look like alloy ! Surely the miracle has to be Mr Jingles like in the Green Mile ! I had a secret agent kit too in the early 70s with a gun with silencer false passports/ID, code book and spy camera !
Why don't you anneal the end of the hacksaw blade and then drill it? Or just use bi-metal blades which have hard teeth and a soft backing. You can easily shorten a blade with a grinder and then anneal the end by holding the blade in vise jaws and heating the end with a torch to red heat and let is slowly cool. That Milwaukee saw looks to be the best made one of that style that I have seen. I need to look for one. I mostly use my close quarters saws for shortening toilet base to flange bolts. Great show.
Have you tried a pin punch with the blade sitting on the end grain of a 2 x 4? I have often used that method to put a hole in a piece of bandsaw blade as a make do hacksaw blade.
Yup, just heat up the tip and let it air-cool before drilling. I've made several 3" and 6" blades from broken saw blades that way. Never bothered to re-harden.
I really enjoy watching your channel but if there’s something I really love is your mouse adventures. Are you going to get him a companion like the other one you had😂? I’d name him little scout.

Years ago someone moved into a house about a 1/2 mile away and painted their address on their trash cans. I had to laugh obviously from the city, people don't steal trash cans around here. A stove will look like a massacre after cooking something in oil, the oil shows up like crazy under UV light.
That’s so true- When city folk go to the suburbs they bring their fears with them. I remember a guy was looking at a home upstate next to my property and he asked the owners how much would it cost to put a fence around the 3 acres- the owner said “Why on earth would you want to do that?!?” 😂😂😂
A few shows ago you promoted the cheap Chinese power meter. I picked one up. As a test, i checked the “off” load of my blender (0.8W) and my hot cocoa maker (0.2W). Long time ago, i knew not to have them plugged in all the time due to vampire drain. Can you imagine just two things taking up 1W 24/7? What a waste! My toaster, as i guessed, came out to 0W. It has a setting where i can put in my energy cost per KWh. Mine is like 0.1232, but the meter only goes to 2 decimal places. So i put in .12. And at 0.8W, the cost wouldn’t even show up. I was considering putting in 12.32 and just divide my results by 100. Thoughts?
Holy Cow! I always knew some chargers and remotely controlled items might have some vampire draw but never a blender or toaster! Wow! Super interesting! Now I have to check some of my appliances! Thanks! 😃👍

Thanks! 😃👍
@ to clarify, the blender and cocoa maker were vampires, the toaster was clean.
I would call that mouse Lucky
