How to Make a Leather & Wood Toolbox // Leather & Woodworking
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 10 май 2020
- On this episode I show you how I made this leather & wood toolbox to hold my leather stitching and edge burnishing tools. I’ve always liked the idea of combining leather & wood into functional pieces and this seemed like a no brainer. The concept is simple - use two pieces of wood for the sides of the box and then use leather to create the body of the box by wrapping it around the wood edges. This could also be used to create unique bags or cases.

Great video, Ethan! I really like that combo of rainbow poplar and the dark leather. Now, you're going to enjoy that sitting there rather than some cardboard box.
Thank you, Bruce! yeah the rainbow poplar is really nice! Absolutely, that cardboard box drove me nuts!
Bruce A. Ulrich can you believe he called it rainbow poplar Ethan?!
wood and leather are a great combo!
Any piece of wood can be a cutting board. Don’t let anyone tell you different! 💪🏻
Bevelish Creations I agree.
Alright, it's decided, using it tonight to prep dinner haha
This looks AMAZING. Excellent work brother.
Cheers!
Thank you bud, appreciate it!!!
Amazing
Thank you so much!
Awesome work! 😃👍🏻👊🏻 ....... 👉🏻▶️👉🏻🔔
Thank you so much!
Absolutely perfect toolbox for leather! I laughed at the thumbs up counter. Great touch
Thanks man! Hahaha I didn't realize I did that so much until I started editing the footage haha
Very creative idea i really like that
Thank you so much!
Ethan Carter Designs ur very welcome keep making cool video and awesome projects

Thank you for checking it out, I really appreciate it!
@@EthanCarterDesigns You're welcome. Take care.
That turned out awesome dude 👊🏽
Thank you so much! Appreciate it bud!
You are a real artisan! Beautiful piece.👍❤️
Wow, thank you for that! I really appreciate it!
I love the scenery outside where you cut the wood
Amazing work Ethan, love how the poplar stands out against the leather and of course the stitching is beautiful 👍 phenomenal!
I thought I needed the same thing tonight and wanted to do it. I saw the video in the morning. thank you so much from İstanbul ...
You are a true artist! And thank you for the way you teach in your video!
Thank you so much for that! I really appreciate it!
The box came out great! I do see a pattern in your videos though. I think your stitching explanation is the new version of "Caulk Talk" haha
Thank you so much! Hahaha you are 100% correct! Words are hard for me, so if I find something that works I'm sticking to it haha
Such a great video. I love the idea and design. Great job!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Good Morning!
Great idea for a small case with great possibilities.
Another great job!
In these difficult times I wish you and your family much health.
Take care!
Thank you so much! And same to you and your family!
Another beautiful and useful project! Now I want to build a fancy holder for my needles and Thread Zap!
Thank you Stephanie! Do it! I'd love to see what you come up with. And we need to design a travel case for next years "on the road" leather project at WBC haha
Great video, easy to follow. Cool design and fabrication. Mahalo for sharing! : )
Thank you so much! Really happy to hear that!
Very beautiful work 👍👍👍 like my friend
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!
Wicked cool project and excellent video!
Thank you so much Tony!
That was great Ethan. I had an idea how some of that was done. Thank you. I enjoyed that a bunch.
Thanks man! This may be one of my favorite projects...and unlike a lot of them, I use it almost daily!
That is a really beautiful piece of art, very talented.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate that!
As always, great video and project Ethan. That poplar really is pretty and it goes well with the leather.
Thank you so much Katie! I really liked the combo too - worked out well I think
Great job! Such a nice improvement over the cardboard
Thanks so much! Haha right?! Only took me over a year!
@@EthanCarterDesigns sometimes the good things take time 😁
Haha yes lets go with that!
That turned out really nice 👍
Thank you! It's nice when you make something you'll actually use everyday and this is one of those!
Awesome idea! Thanks for the video tutorial. I'll be making myself one shortly!
Thank you so much! That's great, I'd love to see it!
Great job.
I’m gonna copy you, sort of. Mine will be all leather (my woodworking tools are spread out across three states), and a little bigger to easily hold the tool rolls… but I need something and I’m thinking a flattened round duffle similar in shape to yours and with two leather dividers will look good. Thanks for the inspiration.
That sounds awesome! I'm honored my project inspired you! I'd love to see it when it's done!
Good job 👏! I wish I have these equipments
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it!
Cool project and great way to mix the mediums. I like the look of the #unnecessarystitching
Thank you so much - I love mixed mediums and am super happy with how this one worked out. Hahaha so much #unnecessarystitching for sure!
Nice project!
Thank you, I appreciate it. I still use it all the time!

Thank you so much, I truly appreciate it!!!
Late to the game here, but just ordered some leather tools!! Very simple project in mind, but this toolbox is already on my list! Great work dude! And great work hitting 10k on insta!
That's awesome man, I am so pumped you're going to give leather a go! And thanks, I still can't believe it!
It's been 3-years... Are you happy with the needle holder? Or do they accidentally get knocked off the magnet? 💖🌞🌵😷
I'm happy enough, but I would probably change up the design a little if I made it again and add a little needle case or pouch attached to the side instead. They don't get knocked off that often actually, but yeah definitely would rework it if I did it again.
Just listen to you on the Clamp podcast love the look of this I want to try this
That's awesome, thanks for coming to check it out! You totally should and if you do, I'd love to see it!
@@EthanCarterDesigns I got some Paduak that I want to try with white leather!!
@@poultonprojects Oh that would be an incredible combo!
I just got into leatherworking! I didn't look up really anything ahead of time though and have been punching all my holes with that same belt punch you have. What is that that you're using under the 6 hole punch? plastic? I'm in the middle of my second project (I make dog toys) and it would go much faster your way. Great video! thank you for sharing!
That's awesome that you're getting into leather work! The pad underneath is a a rubber punching pad meant for exactly this - it works great and also extends the life of your stitching chisel points. I can't find the exact one I got, but here is a similar one on Amazon. amzn.to/35ZX9Pd Thanks for checking out the video!
I don't know. That cardbox box was pretty fancy, and now you've probably hurt its feelings. Yours does look very nice, but at what cost, Ethan?
At what cost is right...I've made a special trophy shelf in my shop for the cardboard box...it only seems right!
Great design
Can I ask where you can get the circular logo tool you have please , looks a great tool
Thank you! The circle cutting tool?
@@EthanCarterDesigns yes Iv jus done some research on them
@@scottmclean4237 I'm not sure the link will work in comments, but the link is in my description and it's called Leather Circle Cutter - amzn.to/38bS32h
It looks great and I really like the colour scheme but the screws feel like a cheat. That's just my opinion though.
Thank you, appreciate it! Appreciate your opinion for sure...I'm truly interested in what you would have used instead? Maybe I could do that instead in the future.
@@EthanCarterDesigns idea 1. use a second piece of leather under the first, screw on the piece of leather(you can use multiple screws then) and stitch your main piece onto that. this way you have all the strength of the screws but see non of them and you can hide a magnetic strip in it to make the closing system work better.
idea 2. this would be alot more work and i dont know what kinda stitch to use but you could drill diagonal holes in the wood and stitch the leather to that directly.
@@Basicallydirt Great ideas for sure...I think I'll give one of those a shot on the next one! Thanks for the ideas!
Did you put a piece of metal on the leather for magnetic attachment? Where did you put it? Nice box!
I think I see it in the video ...is it on the inside of the box?
@@rcsteele Yep exactly, hid it on the inside!
Hello is it possible to sew on plastic material no thicker than a dime
I've only experimented with it a couple times, but depending on the plastic and how much it splits, I think it should be possible!
What kind of glue do you use, to attach leather to wood?
I use Tandy Leather's EcoWeld Adhesive. You could also use contact cement, but I prefer the EcoWeld because there are zero fumes and it works great!
What name of glue for making bag?
I use Tandy Leather's EcoWeld Adhesive - there's a link in the description if you're interested.
Where did you get the tool for your logo @4:55?
