Land Rover Discovery Sport 2020 (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

- Land Rover Discovery Sport has received a facelift for the model year 2020. I really liked the Freelander replacement, when I first test drove it some four years ago. But in late 2019, when almost everybody does SUVs and crossovers, does the Baby Disco have what it takes to keep up?
As this is a facelift, dimensions of the the Land Rover Discovery Sport haven't changed. The car is about 2 metres wide, almost 460 cm long, the wheelbase is 274, and the height 173 cm. Ground clearance is slightly above 21 cm, that’s on the higher end of the spectrum in this segment. Land Rover also provides wading depth up to 60 cm.
From the outside the biggest changes are visible in the front, where creases on the bumper have been ironed out, diving the facelifted Discovery Sport Evoque-like smoothness. In the rear tailpipes disappeared under the bumper. The whole car looks now more like the big Discovery, but without the asymmetrical tailgate.
Finding a direct competitor for the Land Rover Discovery Sport is not easy, because most cars in this segment are larger. Lexus NX is the closest in terms of size, but it doesn’t have the optional third row of seats. The Discovery Sport is the only premium compact luxury SUV offering a 7-seater configuration.
Looking at 7-seaters in the mass segment there’s the Nissan X-Trail, Peugeot 5008, and VW Tiguan Allspace. Back in the day the X-Trail was even sort of capable off road, but today it’s easier to find a Tiguan with AWD.
Starting price: 37 000 euro
As tested: 68 000 euro

Thanks for watching Marek Drives reviews. If you liked it, here are several other channels you may enjoy: Autophorie, Autogefühl, Bob Flavin, Carfection, Doug DeMuro, Driven Car Reviews, Fully Charged, TheSmokingTire, TheStraightPipes, VINwiki. Авто/Мото
The bag holding hooks are under the boot floor, placed in the underfloor stowage. There are 4 of them and you can place them wherever you want. ;-)
Excellent review. Honestly one of the best out there. Keep going, well done!
Much appreciated!
Great review Marek. Land rover was really clever in offering this with a 3rd row in a smaller package but then forgot to pay attention to all of the little details you pointed out. I guess that's the reason why they are also near the bottom of the reliability ratings as well. Oh well, don't buy one, lease it. The discovery over here in Canada is also avail with the 286hp 4 cylinder petrol as well.
In the end, this isn't on my shopping list as it's too wishy washy for my tastes.
Thanks for the review Marek. I would encourage you to attend a Land Rover Driving Experience centre where you can spend several hours learning all the technical abilities of this vehicle and other Land Rover makes. This would improve your knowledge of the brand and add additional confidence in driving these cars and others off-road. For example, when taking it on your off-road test drive, no mention was made of the locking differential or of the low traction control mode that is offered on this car. It would have significantly improved your off road experience. With the Diff lock enabled, and with the "mud, ruts and snow" mode enabled, I would suspect that you would do much better in deeper sand. However, some of the capability of the vehicle works in conjunction with the driver ability as well. I would be interested in seeing you do a review of the 2020 Range Rover Sport, especially if you have taken the time to attend an LR Driving Experience course.
Oh, but I have attended off-road events organised by carmakers, and I am fully aware of how capable these cars are on a specially designed obstacle course, with moderately aggressive, but stock-looking tires, etc. The thing is in real life I rarely have the opportunity to survey the road ahead, and pick the best route. It's often "full steam ahead or I'll never get out of here". And this sometimes costs a bumper or a dented body panel.
To make things a bit more interesting, Polish JLR branch organised the big Disco launch event somewhere quite picturesque with an obstacle course specially designed by a Camel Trophy veteran. And then the local authorities had to let some water out of a nearby dam, and JLR decided they cannot afford to show how capable their cars are off road :)
Bottom line, he doesn't like the car and won't complement it without a contextual snide caveat that the car sucks in general.
Mike Davis makes a good point. Marek, you should take Mike's proposal in humility and actually attend a Land Rover Driving Experience event otherwise there is the risk of losing credibility among your viewers who have traversed "impossible" terrain in the Discovery Sport.
@@alfonsowadeyua5293 which part of why I wrote earlier didn't you understand? I am aware this car is highly capable, but JRL won't be happy if I return the car with parts missing. In other words: it's as good as its AWD and tires I have been given the car to test on.
Noted, Marek. Have a good day and looking forward to your next review.
I got my Discovery (Range Rover) its great nice and big I love all the seats definitely the back good for holidays and the dog very big boot love your vids big fan of them!
Witaj Marek! Nice video, I loved it. Only you and Bob Flavin can make car videos more interesting.
Thanks! Yes, Bob is the man!
please marek review the new ssang yoong korando i would like to hear your thoughts on tha model...
If I need to choose I would choose this or Stelvio over X3 or GLC.
I love the disco sport.....
The car has amazing specs for an affordable compact SUV, which overtakes its competitors
So it is too expensive, it drinks like a champ and it is a relaxed vehicle to drive, in short term you are describing a SUV.
This car is terrific. Period.
Thank you for the review but I am disappointed that you did not test it off-road. In my opinion, true off-road capability is what we expect from an expensive Land Rover as we know them not to be good at other specifications (motors, weight, consumption, pricing, reliability).
Moreover, testing it off road was the way to ward off bad luck (or bad capabilities...)
😉
These things are actually quite good off road. This bloke couldn't drive a greasy stick up a dog's bum. I'm in Australia and have a well kitted out Discovery 4. I often go off roading with a variety of vehicles, including Discovery Sports - and in the hands of a good driver, they easily perform better than anything else in their class off road.
Why does it feel like all these electrics and fancy changeable buttons will be a nightmare out of warranty? I mean, aside from the fact modern jlr don't have a great reputation for long term reliability
Marek great review. What is your height?
175 cm
@@MarekDrives Thank you!
we need comparison this with X3 and also old one you didn't made B200 and X2
Meena-we honestly don't need such comparisons and the reason is you're trying to compare cars from different segments. The Mercedes B200 is a multi purpose vehicles (M segment) and BMW X2 is more like a compact hatchback or compact crossover than a proper SUV and it's also much shorter with it's 4360 mm of length plus it doesn't get three rows of seats. None of the two have off-road capabilities 😏
Why isn't the adaptive suspension worth getting? What difference does it actually make? Does it go round corners better?
"Sport" is just a name. This car is by no means sporty. Better spend the money on other comfort options. Also, as this is a JLR product - one less thing to break down.
@@MarekDrivesENG my point is if someone can afford a top spec model and money was no object, then what actual benefit would the adaptive suspension bring?
If I was in the market for a midsized suv with 5 seats, it will be between the Lexus Nx and this LR.........
I have my thoughts if there are any people in Poland who can afford a Landrover anyway haha. Great review!
Probably more people in Poland can afford big engined luxury cars, than in the Netherlands :)
@@MarekDrives I agree. Haha
sound like a diesel, and what is up with this Duster colour?
Don’t like it? That’s a bmw paint left over from the merger days and still sells in numbers to keep it around
Cheer up
What does wading depth have to do with getting stuck in soft sand? Weak review which I stopped when I heard that. You have not got a clue.
I said I will not test it, because the last time I go stuck BEFORE I got to water.
Super
GLB
What do I think about Land Rover Discovery Sport ? It's ridiculously expensive ! I rather buy same amount of money , VW Touareg (68.000 euros as you said)
Is the VW Touareg that cheap elsewhere? That makes more sense, here in Finland the Touareg starts at the same price as the full size Range Rover and Porsche Cayenne
Great review, but I can't wait for SUV's to go out of fashion. They're not bought out of need or for their attributes as vehicles, but as fashion statements - and driven as such.
That’s absolutely a load of rubbish.
Is he comparing a Discovery to an NX, Tiguan and X-Tail? Tiguan All-Space is still a compact SUV, X-Trail is bettween Compact-Mid size SUV, and Lexus NX is larger and more reliable.
You're confusing NX with RX.
Marek Drives hey, Marek. ✋🏼😎
At least that will save me from watching anymore of your reviews!
Only a clown gets stuck in a LR.

I think it's too expensive.
what kind of transmission here it consume so much gasoline?
P.S. dont't like this car......
9-speed ZF automatic, and it uses everything you put in the tank (and more :) ).
BMW X's are a complete joke. better off buying the estate 3-5 etc. Even though the Disco sport is really only a re badged freelander , you do get the true Land Rover heritage. You couldn't give me a BMW!
Land rovers are the worst vehicles ever.
So negative had to switch off
Nice features but awful reliability from this brand...
I think the car IS off-road capable, off-road tyres and an experienced off-road driver would get it through a variety of terrains I'm sure. However, you are correct about it being a car that will almost certainly not be driven off-road by 99% of buyers. Seems crazy we live in a world where people spend good money on machines that are engineered to cope with off-road terrain, only to use it for shopping trips, commuting, and picking the kids up from school. I'm not knocking it, it creates jobs for people in the UK so hoorah for that. Just can't understand the mentality of city dwellers who drive these things. Where are you going? You know an estate car can transport a lot of people and has loads of luggage space right? A tad more fuel efficient as well? Just saying.
Hmmm not a JLR fan. Picky review.
Not a Disco Sport fan. I like the Evoque, the big Disco, the new Defender.
The Evoque and Disco Sport now share the same underpinning. It must be the looks of the Evoque as it’s less capable off road and even less space inside.
As far as off road capability goes, very few people buy these cars to go off road in them. The Discovery Sport will cope with a muddy trail pretty much the same, as a BMW X3, Audi Q5 or a Mercedes GLC. But the price Land Rover charges for it doesn't find justification in the quality. It's only selling point is the 7-seater option, but now you can get a GLB, which is more suited for the city.
MercedesBenz and BMW are more unreliable then Landrovers. Disco more expensive because more off road capabilities. If you dont like why making video try to consentrate your favourite Brands.
Rubbish the land rover is and will always be the worst vehicle for reliability that’s a fact.
Land rover comes standard with poor reliability. This is not an option you can get rid of
How's the armchair today....
the usage of that black plastic in the car interiors/dash is just pain. In less than a few months of using, the "piano finish" looks like scratched old iphone and the amount of fingerprints and dust every day on it is just gross.
This Ingenium engine series should be dropped asap
So I've heard from owners.
@@MarekDrives What did you hear? BTW - love your reviews
Fuck all wrong with mine pal
So in conclusion it's an expensive, diesel guzzling, unreliable, car jack magnet pollution machine. You'll need a mortgage for the service costs. Rather have a hybrid or PHEV SUV
