Recently test drove both Defender and Disco, one huge issue is all future delivery models WILL be dumbed down due to chip shortage. For example to drivers side digital screen will be gone into 2024, they are reverting back to the analog screen as previous models. Other options will be severely restricted. Maybe worthwhile focusing on this issue of Dealers displaying vehicles that we cannot buy. Also LR factories in slowdown, shutdown so god knows how this would effect parts supply, the electronics issue you mention in the video Paul will likely require a non-existent replacement, this bit of kit 'must' perform flawlessly as it controls just about everything, maybe they would replace whole vehicle which has been done. I just wish this car was a bit more rugged. I feel like the new Defender should be the Discovery and the Ineos Grenadier should be the new Defender. Problem is that the Ineos Grenadier is the Old Defender. The new Defender is the Defender for the 21st century. I’m a massive LR/RR fan. On my 4th RR. I personally really miss the previous Discovery or LR3/LR4 as sold in the US. The rear end of this model looks abnormally narrow. The LR4 was a fantastic looking true LR and used/pre-owned ones are still in very high demand here in the US.
As well as the petrol engines being awesome, the diesels are too. Also, the facelift seemed to add slightly stiffer suspension which may make off-roading and going over sudden bumps a bit more jiggly and crashy but it improves the body control and allows you to enter corners with a bit more confidence
I always get annoyed with all the car manufacturers when they give the name to their infotainment systems and many times silly names too (when they try to make them sound technical). Another great review. Just wondering what would happen if you were to turn the car off in off road mode ie when doing the wheel lift test. Would the car lower itself?
You can and should turn that auto lowering into access height Off. You should really only use it when entering a low parking building (that’s really what it’s for) or putting heavy/large stuff in the back. If you have it hunker down into access height and back to normal each time you turn it off you put the airbag suspension through much more than normal wear and tear and they will fail prematurely requiring repairs sooner that should be necessary. Best to just leave it in normal height and only change height as and when actually needed (use access height to let granny in sure). The problem with rear door windows going all the way down is that the manufacturer has to make the window much smaller (less wide), make the door very square or put in a little quarter glass. That’s why most never do.
The will automatically try and level itself but it’s not safe or advisable to turn off a car when in an off-road situation where not all wheels are stable. One great thing about land rovers is they have massive oil sumps so they can have oil in engine if parked on steep hills so when you turn the car off and on it’s always got oil in engine no matter the angle (within standard operating boundaries which I think is 45degrees). Perfect for those that park on steep driveways all the time.
Great review Paul, I have really been waiting for this one. It is a good looking car all round, in my eyes, and deceptively big. Shame about the electrical glitches. 🇰🇪
JLR, famous for electrical gremlins. Honestly would never trust a JLR product especially for serious off roading or somewhere remote like the outback. They tested the new defender in Kenya and on more occasion's than they'd like to mention the defenders had to be rescued by Toyota land cruisers.
@@StephenFogarty2023 I am weighing the two up. Why do you think the disco is so much better than the LC 300? Do you know of any reviews doing a direct comparison?
@@calanais Depends on your requirements, and what is important to you. Is your budget $ 100 k Or $ 150 k ? Ability to comfortably tow 3.5 tonne ? Off road ability ? Comfort as a 7 seater ? As a 7 seater, Disco is better. More room in Row 3. Row 2 in LC is fixed. In the Disco, you can slide Row 2 forward / back, which gives a lot of versatility with the seating arrangements. Disco has higher GVM & GCM. Disco can be at GVM, and still tow 3.5 tonne. LC can’t do this. A new GXL LC costs over $ 110 k on road, before options. No power tailgate No rain sensing wipers No surround view camera Locking front & rear diff aren’t available on GXL. Prices constantly going up with all manufacturers, and spec / equipment levels changing etc. Closely review the features on each model etc..
The strange design rear tailgate and offset number plate is a nod to the past when the spare tyre used to me mounted on the rear instead of underneath. I don’t like it personally but that’s why it’s like that.
@@jerrymyahzcat you can. I have one, it is under the armrest. The space I was talking about is under the cup holders. You slide the cup holders forward and there is a large storage space underneath with another USB point in their as well. There are a lot of options that this guy did either not know about or chose not to talk about. As a D5 owner I get the feeling that he needed to do more research.
The spec are increct upon approach and departure angle, and also the ground cleanrance..., I suppose the off-road pick was wrong while went for the first climing.
I prefer all the way down, in the unlikely event of a rollover you won’t have an arm flung out of the window and onto the edge of the glass. Yes, it’s toughened glass but that stuff still has sharp edges. This is an old fear of mine from ever since I did an advanced driving course back in the early 90’s and the instructor hammered it into my brain.
Great video Paul, as usual. I feel like you should mention what sort of suspension these cars have, especially the 4wds. And by that I mean, do they have a solid axle rear or independent and same for the front. I'm guessing this one is independent front and rear
Let’s just say that u r near the car, and someone tries to attack u, or steal things from u. Activate the Panic Alarm Attract attention to u and the vehicle Scare the criminal away.
That stupid "offset" rear hatch treatment is a hangover from the Discovery 1 days when the spare tyre was on the rear of the vehicle. Can't see why they've kept it, it's unnecessary and looks weird.
Can someone please advise which is the best engine? I would be putting years of savings on a car and want to make aure to order the one with best reliability
Great video as always. Just wondering any chance to test out A4 45TFSI, 206 arteon, 330i and std range model3. Really want to know how they compare, many thanks.
Great review Great car It’s so versatile and can do everything for a large family. It is a much better alternative to the new LC 300, in so many ways. I’d buy the D300 motor 220 kw / 650 nm Huge torque, grunt and fantastic economy.
I like Land Rovers but not sure if I would purchase one because I’ve heard they have reliable issues, my neighbour bought a Range Rover for $110K and his wife took the car to drive to a small town 3 hours away and the car just stopped and was saying there’s no fuel and she had to call NRMA roadside assistant but they didn’t know what was wrong with it but luckily the car started back up and when she got back home they took the car back to the dealership and they were trying to tell him it wasn’t covered under warranty but the car was only 4 months old but a few arguments the dealership decided to fix it under warranty.
Great car I’m not a fan of the offset design of the rear tailgate. In the UK, a company sells a normal looking tailgate, that is OEM quality, and it looks fantastic. I’d seriously get this shipped from the UK, and fitted locally to the Disco.

The Disco is less thirsty (but uses Premium fuel thou) than the Jeep and a little more smoother… very impressive for a 6 cylinder. But the Jeep had a little more tech than my current Disco. We’ll see how things go long term… fingers crossed… my 1st JRL product
Fantastic news, congratulations on your new car :). When did you place your order for disc ? Thinking of placing the order soon (Fingers Crossed)
@@jaskhera6614 back in December…. Any orders placed now will be for 2023 model… I think dealers will be adding a markup also very difficult to pay MSRP, they’ve implied the JLR is to blame
Paul we are about to order a MY23 Disco R Dynamic HSE P360 after testing driving a new LC300. I wanted to love the LC300 but couldn’t with its crappy sat nav graphics, lack of refinement, lack of tech at the $150k price tag. P.S that orange colour ain’t available anymore. Devo!!!!
What colour did you get? I ordered the same in Byron Blue, not 100% sure how much I will like it, fingers crossed. My last one was a 2017 Namib Orange and it was a fantastic colour and car.
Can we lower Down middle second row seat independently?
ohh why don't you do review a isuzu kb 240 le
Another great review. Just wondering what would happen if you were to turn the car off in off road mode ie when doing the wheel lift test. Would the car lower itself?
That’s a really good question!
Another great review - Thank you Paul!
Great review Paul, I have really been waiting for this one. It is a good looking car all round, in my eyes, and deceptively big. Shame about the electrical glitches. 🇰🇪
So they got rid of that weird tailgate flap thing?
JLR, famous for electrical gremlins. Honestly would never trust a JLR product especially for serious off roading or somewhere remote like the outback.
They tested the new defender in Kenya and on more occasion's than they'd like to mention the defenders had to be rescued by Toyota land cruisers.
The Defenders also rescued a truck.
Surprised that you didn't mention that it's a genuine competitor to the 300, much more so than a BMW X5 IMO
The new LC 300 is trying to compete with this, yet the all new LC 300 fails in so many ways against a Disco.
@@StephenFogarty2023 I am weighing the two up. Why do you think the disco is so much better than the LC 300? Do you know of any reviews doing a direct comparison?
@@calanais
Depends on your requirements, and what is important to you.
Is your budget $ 100 k
Or $ 150 k ?
Ability to comfortably tow 3.5 tonne ?
Off road ability ?
Comfort as a 7 seater ?
As a 7 seater, Disco is better.
More room in Row 3.
Row 2 in LC is fixed.
In the Disco, you can slide Row 2 forward / back, which gives a lot of versatility with the seating arrangements.
Disco has higher GVM & GCM.
Disco can be at GVM, and still tow 3.5 tonne.
LC can’t do this.
A new GXL LC costs over
$ 110 k on road, before options.
No power tailgate
No rain sensing wipers
No surround view camera
Locking front & rear diff aren’t available on GXL.
Prices constantly going up with all manufacturers, and spec / equipment levels changing etc.
Closely review the features on each model etc..
Hey Paul, any update on Audi A3 Sedan 35TFSI review?
looks very nice especially in this trim I'm not joking around especially in this colour
It’s a great spec on this car!
Where did you get it
The strange design rear tailgate and offset number plate is a nod to the past when the spare tyre used to me mounted on the rear instead of underneath. I don’t like it personally but that’s why it’s like that.
What do you think about the older generation D'Max Blade model
I had Bell's palsy. The rear end reminded me ...
It has ambient cabin light??
Wait...is 21:33 flat??
So nobody told him about the other storage in the middle of the console" Or is it not there on the facelift? Its huge if its still there.
I believe you can option a fridge in the centre also.
@@kevinmorgan1763 yes I know about that space under the cup holders as I have one too.
This, a defender or a 300 series VX?
I will take a plain 300 Series GX over all the bells and whistles laden Discovery 5.
Definitely a Disco or the Defender.
The new LC 300 is very disappointing
omg such a great suv i never knew it was a 7 seat car
You learn something new every day!
i also live in austrailia like you and im your biggest fan EVERRRRRR i comment on all your videos and can you maybe review a saicmoter ldv suv
Great review ... I like that Discovery.
Great video Paul, as usual. I feel like you should mention what sort of suspension these cars have, especially the 4wds. And by that I mean, do they have a solid axle rear or independent and same for the front. I'm guessing this one is independent front and rear
Yes independent all round. The only way to go.
Great review. Perhaps you could demonstrate how the panic alarm works for the uneducated people (me!) and why you would ever use it??
Let’s just say that u r near the car, and someone tries to attack u, or steal things from u.
Activate the Panic Alarm
Attract attention to u and the vehicle
Scare the criminal away.
Can you make a 7 seeter video?
That stupid "offset" rear hatch treatment is a hangover from the Discovery 1 days when the spare tyre was on the rear of the vehicle. Can't see why they've kept it, it's unnecessary and looks weird.
Might be better traction for the light offroad if there were more appropriate shoes on it!!
Can someone please advise which is the best engine?
I would be putting years of savings on a car and want to make aure to order the one with best reliability
The 6 cylinder is the more reliable engine + the bullet proof zf gearbox
The new engines are great
There is a Uk company to address the rear of the vehicle
Cheaper just to crash it
Very comprehensive review Excellant
Great video as always. Just wondering any chance to test out A4 45TFSI, 206 arteon, 330i and std range model3. Really want to know how they compare, many thanks.
Nice review, except you don't talk about reliability. Land Rover has a terrible reputation in the USA. I'm sold, except for that bit detail.
The spare tyre isn’t on the back anymore. Time to make the rear symmetrical.
Yes I have ordered one of these land rover discovery in orange because it is my favourite colour
Great review
Great car
It’s so versatile and can do everything for a large family.
It is a much better alternative to the new LC 300, in so many ways.
I’d buy the D300 motor
220 kw / 650 nm
Huge torque, grunt and fantastic economy.
Yeah it’s far better than the Land Cruiser 200 or 300.
22.3l/100km ufffff! Very thirsty!
What about prado, cruiser 200 and range sc v8 review?
I have a problem, I can't find those keys on my Discovery... Lr Discovery 1 1997 tdi 300😁😁
How may facelifts are there for this model cause I've seen a quite a lot which are different from each other😂
Paul can you do a test on two cars, the BMW 5 Series 550i and the BMW X7 50i please
Great car
I’m not a fan of the offset design of the rear tailgate.
In the UK, a company sells a normal looking tailgate, that is OEM quality, and it looks fantastic.
I’d seriously get this shipped from the UK, and fitted locally to the Disco.
Can you provide a link of a photo or video of the symmetrical tailgate?
weird. no flip down "tail gate" platform on this model; thought they all came with that. maybe only in the USA.
LAND ROVER DISCOVERY
Discovery METROPOLITAN EDITION Ingenium 3.0 l 6-cylinder 221 kW Turbocharged Diesel (Automatic) All Wheel Drive
Great review thanks.
Yeah mate of course the land rover discovery looks great 👍
Why didn’t the fix the awkward back end 🤷♂️
Thank you very much Paul !
I like rear design 🥰😍
