- Between the years of 2006 to 2010 Jimmie Johnson won five consecutive championships. During that time he became a legend of American sports. But what many people tend to forget are the drivers who challenged him through those years. Denny Hamlin in 2010 came closest to dethroning JJ during that time. This is the story of how Denny Hamlin nearly became the 2010 NASCAR Sprint Cups Series champion.

Thank you all so much for the support for this series. These videos take so much time and effort compared to the others that it makes it that much better to see what they mean to all of you. Let me know how you would like the series to be improved down here in the comments section.
Not having audio blunders would probably go a long way in helping lol. My bad guys.
Here we are in 2019 where Denny doesn’t choke but his crew does. Damnit
Denny is a two way driver: He either almost wins the championship and has a good season or sucks and has an awful season. Good video Jaret!
Running's Racing not true. The only time he’s ever finished worse than 12th in points was in 2013, when he broke his back.
That’s pretty consistent, especially considering he’s won a race in all those season. It’s a common misconception people have about Denny since he doesn’t get talked about much, so I understand why people make this mistake.
Hamlin and Johnson might lose their winning streaks this year, leaving Kyle Busch as the only driver to win in every full time season he’s ran
Denny career has an asymtote sitting on the championship goal.
2011 was a weird year for him. Wasn’t great, wasn’t bad, just ok-good.
your true.
all drivers has there awful seasons
Hamlin's 2010 season was heartbreaking. I so wanted him to beat JJ. Hell, even one of my friends from high school sympathized for me because I was so frustrated and voiced it on social media. Kicker? She wasn't even a fan of the sport.
Add that along with a heinous season Gordon had, I was angry.
8 years later, don't care for Hamlin and no longer hated JJ. Time flies.
Anyone to beat Johnson lol
Give me a valid reason why you don't care for Hamlin, and like Johnson now... If I were to guess? Because Hamlin dumped Elliott at Martinsville in 2017, and Johnson having such a weak season in 2018? If so, that's pretty lame. The thing about Elliott and Hamlin is admitted to wrecking him. He said he wanted to do the bump and run but instead overdrove the corner, and picked the bumper off the ground. No reason to hate the guy, but since you're a Gordon fan, then that tells me why you hate him.
Hamlin has always been a little punk and he'll be out of a ride once Bell moves up lol
@@81casperflip Because he wrecked Elliott? Elliott's more of one because he took out Hamlin at Phoenix the following week and karma got to Chase, because he lost his hopes for the Championship.
Denny got what he deserved.
I really wanted Hamlin to win this one. At this point I just want him to win one before he leaves the sport
Not gonna happen 🤡
@@Jeffgordonfan24hesthegoatwhy wouldnt it? you people hate hamlin cause hes good
4:06 - Classic NASCAR meme
This hurt to watch him implode...
You should make a video about Kevin Harvick for this season. If the chase hadnt exsisted,i believe he would have won on points
I have it on my list of future episodes. It will be done in the future for sure
Old Phoenix looks good
Atleast the surface is starting to wear now so the racing is becoming a tad better
@@larry8030 yeah
Missing rings. Mark Martin 2009? The greatest driver to never win a cup 😭
NOT NO MORE BABY DH
I think about this season a lot. As a Hamlin diehard, it still eats me inside thinking about how close Denny was to this title.
And 2014
This was Hamlin's best season in terms of wins, but he had worse average finish than Matt Kenseth who got 0 wins that year. Hamlin had a 12.9 average finish while Kenseth had a 12.8 average finish. He still would have finished 3rd in points under the non-chase format so at least he did mostly deserve 2nd in points.
NickSant16 denny was checkers or wreckers that year
I don’t watch NASCAR much anymore but back in 2010 I was a pretty big nascar fan and a huge Hamlin fan. I remember being bummed when he got hurt and wouldn’t be able to race and then being blown away when he raced his ass off despite the injuries
Great video this was the first year I started to watch Nascar and Denny was my favorite and still is
Thank you for showing Phoenix
Damn I love these videos. Keep them coming! I remember this chase like it was yesterday. Johnson had a disappointing 25th to open up at Louden, after that he was as solid as he's always been. I remember feeling like Hamlin lost the title after Phoenix, how he carried himself, and how calm cool and collected Johnson was, that Homestead he would be finished off. And he was.
fun fact: when Gordon and Johnson switched crews at the Texas chase race, they never swapped back. I think still to this day Chase's team consists of some of those crew members from 2010.
Man idk how you don’t have more views these are really good videos
1:07 Larry are you okay?
Nakainu LMAO

Back when Fox showed emotion during races
Tbf I don’t blame them for laughing. Legit choke job by Matt and this is coming from a Matt fan
@@larsongame4120 well it started the greatest season for Denny
Finally got to watch all of this video, amazing job!
This series is so good! Keep it up Jaret!
WTF 10:30 J. J. Yeley driving the 36 and 9 at the same time :D
I was wondering when someone would finally see it lol
That was Kahnes last race in the 9. After a crash and getting sick, Yeley finished the race after repairs.
Lol
I feel like almost every season is a missing ring for Hamlin. He has by far the worst luck in the playoffs. Here’s a rundown. ⬇️
- 2010: Wrecked By Biffle At Homestead
- 2012: ECU Failure (Martinsville Fall)
- 2013: Broken Back (Didn’t Make Playoffs)
- 2014: In Championship 4 (Passed By Harvick with under 10 to go. (Harvick Also In Championship 4)
- 2015: Roof Hatch Issue At (Talladega Fall) (Gets Eliminated)
- 2016 (Blown Engine At Charlotte Fall) (Eliminated From Playoffs)
- 2017: Intentionally Wrecked By Chase Elliott (Gets Knocked Out Of Playoffs)
His engine blew at Charlotte in 2016 but still made the Round of 8.
justin dinkins oh.... yea I think your right, thanks for the clarification!
he had it coming in 2017 lmao
And then in 2018 he was just bad in the playoffs
Also in 2013 he actually won the homestead race
I can’t help but wonder what if Mike Ford decided to gamble and Denny did not pit for fuel ala Mayfield at Michigan 2005
This season will always be heartbreaking for me. I wish things were different and Phoenix would of turned out differently. Great video!
Missing Rings Denny Hamlin 2006 this season for Hamlin is underrated
Great job on the Missing Rings Series, I love your vids and please do Missing Rings: Matt Kenseth 2013, Carl Edwards 2016 and Greg Biffle 2005
These are sooooo good!
Man I remember those days and I wish Hamlin could be a contender once again.
Everyone forgets how strong Jeff Burton was this year as well. Martinsville, Texas, Darlington. All races he had a car to win. I think an engine ended Martinsville, Jr. spun him at Texas, and pit crew messed up which took him out of the lead at Darlington.
Chad made Mike Ford eat his words over those desperation comments. Chad made THE clutch call of the decade
2011 was a brutal hangover for Denny and the #11 team, too. Good thing he won at Michigan to save that season. 2012 saw him return to championship contending form.
Another fantastic edition of Missing Rings. Crazy thought (figure this is a long shot but figured I'd ask) - ever thought of doing something around these lines for CART/Champ Car or IndyCar? Michael Andretti in 1996 (CART) or Scott Dixon in 2007 (IndyCar) could be a good example of this..
While i probably won’t do those in the immediate future I will definitely keep it in mind. Maybe I can see if David Land could help me out with one of those
A lot of these missing rings videos show how awful this system is
What In Carnation? Make a crash complation were win they wreck it says HE PUT HIM IN THE WALL
He wouldn’t have won even if the playoffs didn’t exist
Not really, seems you're just fishing on a nostalgia. The pre-playoff chase was just fine and had little room for criticism in my opinion.
Sorry, TheAqualegend, but if that were objectively the case, why couldnt the format stay teh same for more than 2 years? I agree with carnation that these videos highlight how bad of an idea the chase/playoff was from the beginning.
After seeing this video, I blame JJ for the elimination format with his, "One race, winner take all," comment.
@@AgtWashingtub Because Brian France was an inconsistent idiot. I'm surprised there wasn't some sudden death mode implemented after 2011 honestly.
Great video!!! Earned a sub!!
You are awesome
the chase format was broken. but the playoff system is horrible.
But the playoffs is the chase...
They need the '03 system
How have I not seen this?!?! 😂😂😂
Good video :]
For moment I thought Denny was going to win the 2010 championship and he came up short I felt bad for him a bit.
This year had the original Big 3 of the 2010’s. Hamlin, Harvick, and Johnson were all competing. Johnson was being Johnson, Harvick was consistent, and Hamlin was winning.
Got here so early it was private
Lol, nice
I was literally about to suggest this
15:10 that cut tho 😂
1:07 KENSETH OVERDROVE THE CORNER HERE COMES HAMLIN
Well Larry HAHAHAHAHAHAH I guess we are heading to victory circle
Reason I became a fan of the #11. 2013 was a really rough season for him, and if anyone has noticed, he hasn't been as good as he was back in 2009-2010, and 2012. I feel it's honestly because of the Gen 6 car. Which is really unfortunate. I'll always like Hamlin, no matter how bad he may get.
YEEEEEEESS I've been spamming this in chats for months
I was at Texas. Spring
God that fucking race
Great videos - but I still wish you had highlights corresponding with what you were saying
Carl Edwards 2011, or just the 2011 chase in general, it was easily the best fight for the championship since the chase started in 2004
It's funny that if Edwards had beaten Bayne in the 500, Edwards would have won the title
the king off missing rings: mark martin
You can do another one of these for Hamlin in 2023
Do Carl Edwards 2008 next.
Denny and the Fedex team just choked this one away. At the start of 2010, they were winning and Mike Ford called the strategy right, that Martinsville win was pure genius(even though I don't like to admit it). Then as time wore on, the team started feeling like they could win every week(All we do is win) and then by Chase time, everybody caught up to them. You could tell as the year was winding down that Johnson was rising to the occasion while Hamlin wasn't coming close and then Mike Ford said they were better than the 48 team and then that compounded with Hamlin's horrid Homestead start is what killed any chance of him getting a championship. To me, they were a team that peaked too early and they weren't used to being in a championship battle yet and preserving themselves over the long haul. This was Denny's only real shot at a Cup so far. This is a big lesson in Don't shoot your mouth off until you have really done something(win a championship) and then you can talk.
Missing rings Denny Hamlin 2019
"Missing Crowns: Dale Jarrett's 7th Championship"
Actually 2010 was what should have been Harvick's season. Hamlin was having his best season though
13:50 - 14:02 you guys hear an echo?
YEEEHEHEHEHEHEEEE
Missing Rings: Carl Edwards 2011, Sterling Marlin 2002
Missing Rings: Chase Elliott 2015 (Xfinity Series)
Do a missing rings: mtj 2016 and chase elliott 2017
2008 Carl Edwards
Do one for Danica Patrick 2013
Do Jeff Gordon 2007 Carl Edwards 2011 or Kevin Harvick 2015 or 2016 please
Missing Rings: Kevin Harvick 2015 , 2016
Missing Rings Bobby Labonte 1999
Great commentary but the video not being from the race weekend being discussed was terribly distracting.
600 km??
I am not a hamlin fan but i feel bad for him this and 2014 were his real only chances of winning a championship
Anyway here is another suggestion. Missing Rings Joey Logano 2015
Missing Rings: Kasey Kahne 2012
Why do you show footage for one race yet at the same time describe something from other races?
I remember watching the 2010 season for Denny Hamlin that how i became a fan i was so disappointment
Do Jimmie Johnson 2003
Mark Martin 2009
Greg Biffle 2005
Dale Earnhardt Jr 2003
Jeff Gordon 2009
Matt Kenseth 2006
Missing Rings: Clint Bowyer 2012
Thomas Carling rip
The videos are wonderful but do a listen through for some small but glaring mistakes. Not trying to be an asshole, I love the series and your channel!
I think the reason why he lost that championship is because outside of those wins Denny had a lot of pretty bad runs and finishes compared to Jimmie Johnson. Kevin Harvick was more consistent than both drivers but just didn’t have the wins and the laps lead
#DennyDerails
Denny is very prone to choking. He could be a multi time champ but can never close the deal and unfortunately I think it’s too late for him now.
All Pro Sportz tbh I don’t think it’s all Hamlin, people tend to just say this because they don’t like him. Phoenix was where it all went downhill. Ford basically made an easy situation much worse by attempting to take shots at the 48 team and screwing up fuel mileage.
Ford was fired after 2011.
13:51 & 13:56 are the same
KENSETHOVERDROVETHECORNERHERECOMESHAMLIN
"Circumstances took us out"
Uh, no, you and your team choked.
Jeff didn't fuck up at darlington his pit crew left his lug nuts lose on the left rear side is the only reason he didn't win .
I wonder if this and him still not winning a championship is karma for all the smack talking they where doing 🤣
Smh Denny
Which drivers lost championships bcuz of the chase, that's the crapshoot to the championship.?????
Watching this collapse makes me feel absolutely fantastic.
playoffs are the worst thing to happen in NASCAR
Boy choked like nobody’s else’s business. And I loved every bit of that meltdown.
Had none of these issues happened. Denny Hamlin would probably never had dumped Chase Elliot at Martinsville which would have allowed Chase to get his first win a year earlier.
VGF80 Eh, I doubt that. If he was in the same spot, he would’ve *bumped* Chase out of the way.
Hamlin's move on Chase for "a free ticket to martinsville". Don't forget I said "probably", doesn't have to be true, but can still be an arguable case.
If Hamlin hadn't dumped Chase, he still would have passed him eventually. He had the better car and there were plenty of laps left
JENNY HAMSHIT LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!!!!!!!
CONGRATS DENNY HAMLIN YOU STILL CAN’T WIN THE CUP CHAMPIONSHIP! You had everything thing going your way for your first win. Your personal hell in Homestead was replaced by your stomping grounds in Phoenix. Your rivals absolutely shit the bed when it mattered the most and you out-choked Chase Elliot.
May the memes of Denny Ketchum live on.
Lmao. Its always fun watching a cocky team lose and choke. Hamlin ran his mouth and ate shit for it. 😂😂
