  • 1992 was objectively the greatest run for a NASCAR championship in the sport’s history. Never to be recreated. While remembered fondly for the Underbird Alan Kulwicki’s championship, many forget the heartbreak that came to Davey Allison not only for the championship but on a personal level. This is his story. How 1992 was Davey Allison’s missing ring.
    Starts: 31
    Wins: 5
    Top 5s: 15
    Top 10s: 17
    Poles: 2
    Laps Led: 1377
    Standings: 3
    Average Finish: 11.5

Davey Allison grew BALLS in 1992. He wrecks, he wins, suffers numerous injuries, and KEEPS ON TRUCKIN'! The biggest what-if, is definitely if Davey Allison didn't pass away, what would be of the careers of Ernie Irvan, Dale Jarrett?

Davey Allison was one tough son of a gun. The fact he was banged up like that through the year and almost winning a title is something to respect no matter how many years later. And also losing his brother Clifford in an accident that same year. ESPN could legitimate make a 30 for 30 with how much happened that season with Davey.
He would of definitely won a championship if he lived through his whole career. Also was the kind of guy that would make sure every fan that came up to him would always get a signature or get a picture taken. He was truly a stand out person.
Another great video Iceberg, I really like this Missing Rings series you're doing!

Despite of Davey losing, the 1992 Winston Cup was probably the greatest championship battle ever, between him, Bill Elliott and Alan Kulwicki, the latter would eventually win the title. And yes, I think Davey Allison was a great driver whose career was cut short

If Davey didn't meet his Unfortunate Death in that Helicopter Crash in 1993, then he would have won the Championship that year, and maybe even 2, 3 or even 4 Titles and would've made Robert Yates Racing the Top Teams of NASCAR instead of Teams like Penske or Stewart-Haas Racing...

Watching this video.although I've not watched NASCAR for a long time and only got into the sport in the last 18 months. I've watched a lot of videos on you tube and this is far in a way the saddest video I've watched.People in the know will probably correct me. But Allison seemed to be the driver who would be in a position to dominate the 90s and certainly deserves more recognition for his driving abilities. It is so humbling and sad too here the things that Allison had too go through in the 92 season alone and to lose his life like that is heartbreaking. Unless someone in a better position can correct me. Allison certainly seems to be in my eyes one of the greatest to have never won the title.

It was really Bill Elliott's championship to lose...at least with six races to go. He had a 154 point lead over second place, Davey Allison. Four of the final six races Elliott would finish 26th or worse due to mechanical issues and bad luck.

Davey Allison was a consistent winner in NASCAR (won in each of his full time seasons) but he lacked overall consistency. 1991 and 1992 he had everything. He was only in his early 30's so he had time too get a championship. However he was very (as said in the video) "Hot and Cold." If he could have gotten rid of that trend.... who knows what he would have done.

Sure Davey had a win @ Richmond in 93 & top 5 in points leading up to his death but I had predicted the them to make a 2nd half charge down the field type plan for the 93 championship, Then you factor in the ‘what if’ with AK, I feel he woulda had some kinda late season influence for the drivers championship in 93 too.
