I think the Laureus Award as Sportsman of the Year should count as a major individual trophy, especially since only one football player has ever won (and did it twice). Most important tournament of the season that is dependent on having at least half decent team. Argentina has always been one of the top contenders. The chances of Haland or Lewandiwski ever getting close to winning are slim.
Considering how close in statistical performance a 22yo in his prime is to a 36yo who is coming close to retirement - the Ballon D'Or should go to Messi. There is no excitement when Haaland gets the ball because he is not a leader or a creative player. He usually only has the ball for a few moments before striking - relying on KDB, Foden, Gundo, Rodri, Bernardo and Jack to create the opportunities. I personally get more excited when KDB, Jack or Philly have the ball than Erling. Whereas Leo creates his own opportunities as well as those of the team. Leo alone can make a difference, Erling alone will get embarrassed. It's pretty sad that when Messi and Ronaldo retire, we won't see anything like either of those players for the next 20 or 30 years. In the next 10 years, Haaland will not become a playmaking, dribbling master with a golden free kick. He will just continue his poaching-style striking and probably plateau around age 26, continuing a consistent level but no astronomical rise. We're coming close to the end of a once-in-a-lifetime era and we should make sure we appreciate every moment these guys are still around.

It's crazy that Haaland and Messi have EXACTLY the same G+A this past year. Haaland is a #9 and has more goals. Messi is a #10 and has more assists. You cannot give the edge to Haaland here by saying goals are more valuable than assists. Haaland's role is a striker and he is expected to finish chances and he did. Messi is a playmaker and expected to create chances and he did. Both were exceptional this year in their contributions to their teams based on their role within the team. If a goalkeeper was in contention for Ballon d'Or, it would not be because of how many goals he scored. De Bruyne is not a top 5 Ballon d'Or candidate this year because of how many goals he scored either. Players must be judged based on their respective role within a team and how well they contributed to their team's success at their position. This is not the Golden Boot. It is a higher honor; for best PLAYER, not best GOAL-SCORER.
So then, who deserves this award? Well, not only do they have exactly equal team contributions, BOTH also won their domestic league and domestic cup. It's crazy how closely matched the top two candidates are this year. By these accounts, they are equal.
So how then to differentiate between them?
Well, you could choose to give Haaland the edge by saying that the Premier League is stronger than Ligue 1, so Haaland's domestic league performance is more impressive than Messi's. The only other major criteria to distinguish between them are their performances in major tournaments this past year. I think this is where the winner will be decided. It's Haaland and Manchester City winning the Champions League versus Messi and Argentina winning the FIFA World Cup.
So first if all, which tournament is more difficult to win? You could argue that the World Cup and the Champions League are actually equally difficult tournaments. Europe easily has the best clubs in the world and the best players in the world are no question primarily in Europe. Or was he simply placed with the perfect team at the perfect time that suited his position and talents perfectly and simply rode the Man City train all the way to the title? Could they have won without him? How essential was Haaland to their successful campaign? How much did he contribute to his team's success? I think the truth is a little bit of both. But you could easily say that Haaland was the missing piece that Guardiola desperately needed to finally get his Man City team over the hump and win the Champions League. To put it this way, if there's no Messi at the World Cup last year, then Haaland is absolutely winning the Ballon d'Or.
But there was a World Cup, and Messi was absolutely mesmerizing. The World Cup is an incredibly difficult tournament and the highest profile football in the world. The pressure is enormous. It's nearly impossible to win. Even with an absolutely fantastic team it is still not certain of success. Your country would be fortunate to win even ONCE in the entire history of the tournament. What Messi did with Argentina in 2022 is comparable to what Maradona did at the '86 World Cup. And that's really saying something because '86 Maradona might possibly be the greatest individual footballing performance in any competition, ever.
I don't think you can say definitively that one tournament is "better" or more difficult than the other. The Champions League and World Cup are both equally incredibly difficult tournaments. It comes down to player performances in these two tournaments.
Haaland is an amazing player on an amazing team and was a key factor in their amazing success winning a freaking Treble, the hardest feat in club football anywhere. But what Messi did with Argentina was historic. The man was on a mission. Something we should feel lucky to have witnessed in our lifetime. Messi winning the Ballon d'Or is football saying thank you.

I think the Laureus Award as Sportsman of the Year should count as a major individual trophy, especially since only one football player has ever won (and did it twice). Stat-wise they both have similar impact in the game, the difference is that Haaland is much more a finisher/consolidator of chances as a goalscorer while Messi is pretty 50/50 between creating and finishing. It can't be understated how many more big chances Messi is responsible for creating in the field (more than 3x Haaland's). So if there's still in doubt about who's more deserving of recognition, we're comparing a young freakish athlete at the peak of his powers against an ageing one with a fraction of the athleticism and in the twilight of his career

Also, out of Haaland's 53 goals, 8 were penalties and 38 were one touch goals where he waited for a lucky deflection or a teammates assist (mostly from Grealish and De Bruyne).

I still believe that Haaland is a better goalscorer than Messi tho, but Messi is close. Considering how close in statistical performance a 22yo in his prime is to a 36yo who is coming close to retirement - the Ballon D'Or should go to Messi. There is no excitement when Haaland gets the ball because he is not a leader or a creative player. He usually only has the ball for a few moments before striking - relying on KDB, Foden, Gundo, Rodri, Bernardo and Jack to create the opportunities. I personally get more excited when KDB, Jack or Philly have the ball than Erling. Whereas Leo creates his own opportunities as well as those of the team. Leo alone can make a difference, Erling alone will get embarrassed.
It's pretty sad that when Messi and Ronaldo retire, we won't see anything like either of those players for the next 20 or 30 years. In the next 10 years, Haaland will not become a playmaking, dribbling master with a golden free kick. He will just continue his poaching-style striking and probably plateau around age 26, continuing a consistent level but no astronomical rise.
We're coming close to the end of a once-in-a-lifetime era and we should make sure we appreciate every moment these guys are still around.
