- FIREWIRE Glazer Review - WOOLY TV #14
(87kg/187cm - 192lb/6'1 1/2")
Today Wooly surfs and goes over the Firewire Glazer by Rob Machado. This thruster has been refined over the last few years and finally added into Machado's quiver to fit in between his twin and quad fin boards. Wooly surfs it in a variety of different conditions from waist high fun beachies to a overhead rolling reefy.
Wooly is riding a 5'8 x 20 5/8" x 2 11/16" - 35.1l (87kg/187cm - 192lb/6'1 1/2")

It seems like a small thing, but finding reviews where
1 you see different types of waves being surfed
2 the person doing the review knows how to surf
3 the height and weight of the surfer doing the surfing is stated!
is not easy! great review!
Seeing that you work at a shop, share some of that insight at the end of your videos who's this board for, who isn't it for, types of waves you believe it excels!
Hi mate
Thanks for the comments. I will take all that on board. Sounds like a great idea to add that info on the end on the review 🤙
Wooly
this is quickly turning into my favourite youtube channel! top notch reviews mate, always a bit sceptical when shops review their own goods but this feels honest and no bs! glazer looks great.
Thanks mate. I’m working very hard at doing non biased reviews and I’m going to be doing boards that we don’t stock in the shop. 🤙
@@WoolyTV Can you review Morning of the Earth and Corey Graham Shapes boards? I wish these two shapers would send their boards to the US.
Hi mate, sorry they aren't on the radar in the near future but if I can do them, I will.
The music selection to your surfing in your videos is next level. So enjoyable to watch over and over.
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it! Yewwwwww
Really enjoying your reviews. Your good surfing, being of normal adult weight, surfing the type of waves most of us surf in, is much more valuable to the average adult surfer wanting a new board than those done by 70-75kg pros in world class waves. You should have a link so viewers can buy online from you. Cheers 🤙
Thanks for the comments mate, much appreciated. I don’t want to jam my shop down everyone’s throat as I really want to do independent reviews. But check out starsurf.com.au 🤙
Gidday mate ! Great board review for the everyday surfer happy to see you aren’t an ex pro kelly slater look-alike surfing flawless California waves !!! Keep the reviews coming. Love the honesty for us average mortals.
Thanks mate!
Solas copping stray shots there.
@@deezy9622 deservedly so 😁
Another awesome review for us everyday surfers. Just ordered my Glazer. You pick great soundtracks too
Thanks mate. Yeah Dylan does a good job of the edits and phat beats :)
You ripped the bag out of this board! its a joy to watch you surf it!
Thanks mate
Great to see you on other craft than JS Wooly, and this board looked friggen awesome under your feet!!!
Cheers mate! Yeah have just done the 3 FireWires, 2 Pyzels and now I’m surfing the new JS Monsta Easyrider and Monsta Box 2020.
Cheers man,
Another informative clip.
Are you going to get the Seaside in soon?
I am keen to get one but don't know anyone near me that has one.
Keep up the good work.
Thanks mate. Yeah I’m sure I will be doing a Seaside sooner or later! 🤙
@@WoolyTV Can you please compare the two? I have the Seaside and I love mine. I feel that both boards ride share the same wave range just ride differently.
I got a 5'10 thing paddles like a dream and moved well for 38L
NIce! They do paddle well
Nice. Can you do the hydroshort looks like your kind of board
Your about the tenth person who has said that! I’m going to have to do one 🤙
Rails look nice into the tail...nice review wooly & accent there shane lol
Thanks mate. Yes it surfs really well. Rails are sharp through the tail and that double concave 🤙
Really liked the reviews ! We got all the information we need, the different types of waves, your heigh/weight ... Really loved it !
Btw if you're looking for inspiration on board to test, I would be interested for your review of the lost swordfish ! Would be interesting to compare to the pyzalien 2 !
Have a nice day !
Thanks mate! Will add the Lost Swordfish to the list.
Super informative review bro - looking forward to getting my hands on one soon and giving it a blast too. Loved the Seaside so hopefully the Glazer is just as fun!
Thanks mate, glad you enjoyed it.
this board seems a little hard to size.. i am roughly 195lbs (89kg) and my firewire seaside @ 35.4 liters is perfect for me. however that board is in helium construction and from what i understand floats better than lft. i was thinking of picking up the 5'8'' glazer @ 35.1 liters - but based on your comments @wooly tv on you could have used a little more float at times i am now a little confused on what size to buy. i am thinking the 5'9'' @ 37 liters would be a little to much... wish they made this board in helium!
Hi mate
If you are riding the Seaside at at 35.4L then I would stick to the 5'8" 35.1L in the Glazer.
Mate did you get the Glazer? I wanna get one of the two. What do you reckon?
@@graememac376 YO - i did pick one up about 2 months ago. i got the 5'8'' @ 35 liters. the board floats me just if not better than the seaside. the glazer is super easy to ride, as is the seaside. i would say the main difference between the two is that the glazer is a little more maneuverable in the pocket - but also has tons of speed as well just like the seaside. the seaside is a performance fish -- so you will draw out your turns a little bit more - but it will be faster down the line. both boards are great -- for me these two boards are the perfect quiver for so cal. if you have to decide between the two - get the glazer if you want something a little more maneuverable in the pocket or for fast cutties - for good waves 3-6ft. - or if you want something fast and glidey with more drawn out turns go seaside - seaside goes good in 2-5ft.
@@SlickWillie thanks for the reply mate. I got the seaside in 5'8 which will be delivered end of the week. I have afew round tails so I really wanna try this fish. Was the seaside hard to get used to?
@@SlickWillie is 6 foot head high on your scale over there? We call 3 foot head high in Oz
Just picked up a 5’9. Watching your clips gives me hope I made the right choice. Such good surf clips 🤙🏾
Glad I can be of service 🤙

FIREWIRE Glazer best board !!
Yeah they go great eh?
Cheers Wooly, you have piqued my interest 👍. I'm looking for a daily driver.
What did you find for your daily driver?
@@WoolyTV wellllllll, its still a work in progress, Mt Maunganui isn't serving up the kind of waves my Aloha Black Panda can't handle.
Glazer/Hypto.... I like the look of Hydroshort too.
Jazzed on your reviews 👍

I pulled the trigger and splashed out on the sci/fi..... up an extra litre.
I hope its a banger, anyway love the reviews, and would have spent the money in your shop if you were close by. NZ is a ways off at the moment.
Cheers Wooly 🍻
Wooly - great review and thanks for doing it. I'm really keen on getting the Glazer, based on the footage it seems it might go well from knee high to head high. How it felt in steeper sections of the wave? does have rocker enough to push harder without feeling that the board will slide out in a good section? I would say the round tail would help as well. Just trying to get some feedback once I won't be able to test the board before buying it. cheers!!
Hi mate
I found it to work quite well in a variety of waves. Way more versatile than I would have expected from a short wide plan-shape that it is.
Wooly
Thanks for your review, it helped me make up my mind and finally pick up a glazer. I was looking now looking at the no brainer. Do you think it overlaps too much or is the no brainer more along with the seaside in wave range/type?
Hi mate, sorry I haven't ridden the No Brainer. I know they are quiet flat in the entry rocker and should work as a good small wave board but Im really only going off what I have seen and not my personal experience - sorry not much help with that one!
Cheers
Was waiting for this!
Hope it was worth the wait! 🤙
Wooly im the same weight and height as you and was considering getting the 5’6 or 5’7 as thats more my normal volume range but now considering the 5’8 just based on how it looks under your feet. Did you ever feel the 5’8 was a bit over-volumed for you and you would have benefited from a smaller size? just based on the footage it looks best from all boards you reviewed so far , so nimble for so much volume. Normally I ride around 31-32l but I also got the 5’5 twice baked recently and it opened my eyes to bit more volume. I previously had bad experience with some ultra light boards (helium or spinetek) when they are over volumed but maybe coz timbertek is heavier I feel the 5’5 goes unreal for me.
when is the mbox2020 review dropping? super stoked to watch it.!! also a review of scifi 2.0 would be sick if you have access to one.
Hi mate
I have worked out that 33L is about as low as I can ride to still have enough paddle power and that is only in a super high performance board that I ride in good waves. The 5'8" Glazer felt really good volume and I didn't feel like it was over-volumed for me. A couple of times I rode it I actually felt like I could have done with a touch more foam!
Im working on the Monsta Box and the Monsta Easy Rider right now so we should have them out in a few weeks
Plus Machado said size up 3L with this board
Great Channel !
Thanks!
hey mate nice review, and that led me to get 5.10 (on shipping now).
Your review helped me alot to get into this one.
Thanks from South Korea.
By the way, what is the song starting at 4:24 ?
Excellent! I will have to ask the producer, Dylan, to see who that song was by
@@WoolyTV i got first ride, and. It ran smooth as heaven.
Wooly rips!
Why thank you! Im sure you rip too!
Yeeeeeewwww
Very nice review! Could please compare it to the firewire double agent? It has more agressive double concave and rails. Found one in 5.8 31l. Im 160lb intermediate weekend warrior surfing 2-5 beack breaks.
Sorry mate I cant help you there! I have never seen a Firewire Double Agent? Is that a new model?
Wooly
@@WoolyTV no, actually is an old one. Kind of more performace groveller than baked/sweet potatos. Same width but thinner tail and rails very interesting though. Thanks!!
@@bernatANDORRA Ok, I never had that model in my shop. Good luck finding your new weapon! Yewwwww
Thanks for the review.
Did you end up trying out the Seaside at all? If you did, how'd you like that?
Not yet!
Thanks for this review it ‘s a pleasure to whatch.
For the beachbreak surf glaser//hydroshort ??
I think I would choose the Glazer as its a little easier to ride. The HS is a little unpredictable and would probably suit waves with more of an open face where as the Glazer felt good in most conditions.
Cheers
Wooly
How much do you weigh Wooly? Just interested as I have ordered myself the 5'6 and I am 85kg myself? What do you think?
Hi mate
I’m 87kg (on a good day) I was on the 5’8” and I think I could have even gone up a little so maybe the 5’8” would be a better option for you?
Hope that helps
Wooly 🤙
This board turn brown????
I still have it as a demo and its still very white.
Pls do the chilli firechief twin fin
Hi mate, its not on the radar in the near future, but I will add it to the list.
Cheers
Hi Wooly! I have a Pyzalien 2 and an Astro Pop... do you think the glazer has an space in my quiver? Or would it overlap with the Pyzalien 2??
Hi mate
The Glazer is very different to both those boards. I think it would fit nicely in the middle of the Pyzalien 2 and Astro Pop.
Hey mate, what’s your thoughts on the Glazer compared to the JS bullseye? Both reviews are great. Looking for an all rounder. 🤙🏼
Hi mate, depends on what sort of waves you mainly surf? If your waves are smaller and more gutless then the wider nose templet of the Glazer would help, if your waves are a little better then the Bullseye. Where are you located?
Wooly
Wooly TV cheers for the replay. Mainly riding 1 to 4 foot beach breaks around Newcastle NSW.
@@brodiebeeton1384 I would probably get the Bullseye in HYFI for Newy but either would do the job in those waves. Go seee the boys at Slimes or if you cant find what your after then we can ship you over a board anytime.
Cheers
Wooly
Wooly TV cheers mate. Appreciate your help
@@WoolyTV hey Wooly, how the Seaside compare to the Glazer? Guessing suited more to the longer drawn out waves?
So what size and conditions are the sweet spot for this board?
Seems to be very versatile. I would think waist high to over head. Worked in all conditions that I rode for the clip 🤙
@@WoolyTV thanks!
Thanks for this great review!
Thinking about getting a Glazer or Blak Box 3 for my next board for waves in 3-6 maybe 7 feet. The goal is to do more surfing in the pocket. I have the Firewire seaside for my groveler but which would you prefer over the Glazer or BB3? Or is there a different board you would recommend? I am a pretty similar build as you at 6’1 and about 185-190lb
Hi mate, if you are liking the feel of the Seaside then maybe the Glazer is for you! The Glazer will def surf more in the pocket than the Seaside and from what I can tell you can ride it in over head surf. Really depends on your ability and what type of waves they are. Hope that helps
Wooly
Glazer or el tomo fish? Which one would you keep?
The Glazer!
@@WoolyTV I agree, the glazer is more versatile than the tomo fish. What I like more about the tomo fish is its ability to release the tail on demand.
Hi Wooly!!! I was wondering since I havent tried the LFT tech... does ir float more than a PU board? Im 5'9 180 pounds, and im not sure if i should go 5´6 32 lts or 5´5 at 31 ... mostly surfing punchy beach breaks with low tide and mushy with high tide..
Hi mate, I don't find that EPS boards float much more than a PU - depends who you talk to :)
I always get my epoxy boards in a similar volume to my PU.
Hey mate, keen to see what you think about sizing the glazer, I have a 5'8 seaside, 35.4ltr, love the paddle power, but feels boaty sometimes surfing it, skips out abit, and super fast in bigger waves, hard to slow it down or turn when its big, ive oversized it mainly for paddle power.
im 70kg, intermediate. Like more drawn out turns, but want to progress more performance and releases, Thinking of a glazer for the better days, and to offer more performance progression, and using seaside in the fat slow waves. Should i go same size and volume as tge seaside , or drop down do you think? Haven't had an lft from firewire either.
Cheers
Hi mate, maybe just drop down a touch in volume from your Seaside, that should do it!
How do you rate the paddling and wave catching ability of glazer if seaside is a 10 and banana shaped hpsb is a 1?
9/10 - it has a wide, flat nose so it paddles well.
Nice review. Cheers. I have a Twice Baked in a 5'5. Is the Glazer going to do anything that the Twice can't?
Hi mate, the glazer will surf in the pocket alot better than the TB, the TB surfs very horizontal where as the glazer you can really jam in the pocket. If you watch both reviews you should be able to get a idea of how they both surf and see that the glazer surfs alot more better in the pocket than the TB, however the TB grovels alot better.
Thanks for taking the time out to answer my question. Much appreciated!
What do you reckon between this bad boy and the JS Bullseye? @woolytv
Hi Glen. Very different beasts. Bullseye is a little more conventional and you would have to ride it longer than the Glazer. The Glazer has a much wider nose and deeper concaves. It would really depend on what sort of boards you like riding, but saying that I did like the way both of them surfed.
Ripin, Rob should send you a free one.
That would be nice!
Hey fella 🤙🏽. How does this compare against a Hypto in the same volume? Cheers 🙏
Hi mate, I found the Glazer a lot more performance based than the Hypto (but I haven't ridden a Hypto in many years). Hope that helps
Wooly TV : Thanks mate! That helps a great deal... Hypto’s going straight onto gumtree and pulling the trigger on a big boy glazer 😊
Hell yeh! \m/
Yeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Is that Yallingup where you first surfed it?
Nah no Yallingup in that one.
Cheers
Any fun future twin fin options that work well with the Glazer?
I didn't ride it as a twin but maybe try the Machado keels??
@@WoolyTV picked up a set ! Hurricane 🌀 Henri sending some clean lines hopefully tomorrow in Florida. Thanks 🙏
@@WoolyTV In 2-3 clean I tried the Glazer Machado Keels tri futures... then put in a set of Machado bamboo Twin.... I am also 6'2 190 on a 5"9 37 liter Glazer I wanted to foam up... While I may be looking at the Son of Cobra twin or the Merrick twin.. the twin setup rly worked well... It felt amazing... felt like I was cruising a carver skateboard def worth a go one day if you ride the Glazer.... Surface Area I had on the twin was 19.04 I think closer 20 would be the sweet spot...
@@aquamegalodon45 Sick! Yeah I wish I had have gone up to the 5'9"
@@aquamegalodon45 Rip in!
Aloha Wooly,
I was thinking about buying the 5'9 Glazer but I decided to buy the 5'8 Glazer after doing a good amount of research and watching your review. I'm about the same height and weight as you so I thought the 5'8 Glazer would be the proper one for me. I finally got to ride my Glazer yesterday for the first time and it seems like it could take some time to adjust to it. My Glazer is a little shorter than what I'm used to riding which is a 5"11 and another board designed by Rob Machado. My Glazer performed well on the right sections but I struggled to get to my feet on some waves. Would you say there could be a learning curve when riding a shorter board despite the board having more volume than what I was previously riding?
Hi mate
Yes the shorter board will defiantly will be take some adjusting too. I tend to go up in volume if I go shorter. If I had my time again I would have gone up to a 5'9" as I think it would have gone even better for me with touch more volume.
@@WoolyTV I think I should have chose the 5’9 but I’ll give the 5’8 another try
Any thoughts on those Glazer fins?
Hi mate
I like the look of them and now have a set but I never used them on the Glazer. I do like using the Futures Blackstix range in smaller, powerless surf.
Dude, how tall and what weight are you?
Surfing a 5'8"??
Hi mate, my height and weight are in the notes under the clip. (87kg/187cm - 192lb/6'1 1/2")
As the board is higher volume with a super wide nose, I can ride it shorter.
What’s the song artist and song name pls?
No idea mate! I will have to ask my producer Dylan (or you can just DM him on the IG handle in the notes)
Hey Wooly...how does the Glazer compare to the El Tomo fish? I’m tied between the two....
Hi mate.
I would go the Glazer as it would work in a wider range of conditions. I rode it in 1' to overhead and it worked. I found the El Tomo fish a little moody and would have a narrow range of waves that it would go well in.
Hope that helps
If you are in Oz then the guys at starsurf.com.au can ship you one freight free.

Wooly
@@WoolyTV Thanks...I’m also considering the JS black or red baron for waist high to chest/shoulder high beachies.....what you recon? Been loving twins but the glazer looks good....
@@mjstatic77 I. Haven’t seen a Red Baron as yet but I have one landing in a couple of weeks. I would suggest going up in volume if you want them to grovel really well. I went up 2L from my normal shortboard in the Black Baron and I think I could have gone up a touch more.
@@WoolyTV yea definitely thinking up in vol....maybe a tricky question but....Glazer or Black Baron? :-)
@@mjstatic77 that’s a hard one as they are very different boards. The Glazer can be a one board quiver but the Black Baron has its limitations as it’s a twin fin. Best to demo them if you have a shop near you that does demo boards.
Do yourself a favour - get a glazer....??
Firewire should employ you! Yewwww
Board size looks way too small for you.
Yes its about 2L more than my normal shortboard but I think I could have gone up to a 5'9" or 5'10"
