It's 1am, I'm meant to be catching up on work, and instead I'm watching a video about putting dirt in a jar. And yet, thanks to your top tier narration, I regret nothing.
Needless to say, despite the seemingly boring aspect of a jar full of dirt, it's really cool how this creates a mini self sustaining ecosystem within such a small space.
I was going to say watching plants grow in real time is more entertaining than your stupid videos, but I didn't want to make you cry... In the end, I said it anyway. I guess the real monster was me all along...
This is terrific for any student or citizen of the Earth. Doing this activity is phenomenally valuable as an educational resource for anyone. Start them in your cubicle, in your room or classroom. This is how our young people should be educated.
As someone who recently became (very) interested in jars, dirt, terrariums and just plants in general, I loved this. I was never much of a "plant person", mostly coz all my attempts at raising a plant ended up in the plant dying... I managed to kill a cactus, and a few innocent "easy to grow beginner" plants. My mum, on the other hand, is amazing with plants, she's got a mini rainforest of her own in her tiny yard. Then, last year, I got my first potted yucca plant, as a b-day gift from a friend. Aaaaaand that's how it started. One plant led to 5 plant, one pot to 20 pots and a bunch of jars. I now literally put anything and everything in water, and am trying to propagate anything green that catches my fancy. Finally, I went from dumping stuff in water to smearing yogurt moss smoothies on rocks... Just a few hours ago, my husband went with me to the river to collect pebbles and gravel... It was raining. Didn't stop us. 😂 My family finds my newly found obsession with plants fun but (slightly) disturbing too. 😅
Something i find fascinating, is the fact that if you manage to keep such a jar alive for multiple years, with small insects inside, many of the insects will die due to their evolutionary traits not being compatable with the micro enviroment that they are living in, but some of them will end up surviving, and those survivors will go on to have offspring which are better suited to that enviroment. Over time, the insects that appear, will be a whole new species that never existed on earth before.
hmmm never thought of it like that...wonder how many generations to see some change. I'm sure if you started a jar at 5 years old...by the time you 95 something magically would happen.
That's not how it works. They won't have offspring better suited to the jar, that's evolution mumbo jumbo. If by chance one of their offspring lives comfortably in that jar it is because the environment and it were specially compatible and the ones that weren't died. You see, they are not born that way by some magic, they are just, for whatever chance, more compatible. Its all just natural selection. Pure and simple. Not evolution magic lol.

Awesome as always, just a little tip, if you like it you may let the Dionaea flower bloom, but then you have to cut the flower stem unless the plant will die.
You probably want to use a macro lens on a system camera (dslr or mirrorless) to film whats going on inside the jar. Lenses like that give you a lot of control over the focal point, so that you can put it on the inside of the jar on the widest aperture setting (lowest f-number). The glass of the jar will automatically be "blurred out of" your picture. I've used it to take photos through solid fences before with none of it visible in the end result.
@@HomemadeEcosystems with a tiny phone sensor you're generally going to have very high depth of field, so separating things by focus is harder. A camera with a larger sensor (APS-C or full frame) and a macro lens is probably a good investment.
