The sequel show will feature Astro's dysfunctional robot parents and Lisbow (the baby bot originally called Chi Tan). It will also have Gold Atlas (Crimson Atlas' 80s brother), Blockhead (the original 1963 Atlas), Photar (the 1960s-80s predecessor to Epsilon), and various others including Jetto from the 60's.
I’d prefer the voice of Freddy Highmore, at least at the time. Not that I don’t like your position, but it’s just easier to view Astro as a superhero, not just some cute kid
Winston Bush rock is a villain in astro boy 2003 like in metropolis, i hope in Jungle emperor new anime series Rock reprise his villain role as An animal hunter
This is the first time I've ever seen this pilot and wow, it was really interesting. I wonder what the series would have been like if they stayed closer to the ideas from the pilot?
I think Sony still likes Spidey the Spiderman too. I think it also coproduced Astro Boy with its animation subsidiary Adelaide Productions as well as Tezuka Productions, remember?
The English dub of this show essentially covered up Atlas's true origin by saying that Atlas has always been a robot when he was obviously human before his death. Don't know why they did that since they later revealed Astro's origins without hand-waving away Tobio's death. I could understand if they didn't want to imply that a character was killed in a kid's show, but making that kid a robot doesn't really change anything about the tragic death or the negligence from his father. It just comes off as a lazy rewrite to a perfectly good story.
zachanikwano Hmm... I'll have to watch that episode again to make sure. It has been a while since I've seen it so I might be remembering it differently.
RyuSpike At what point in the series does it imply that Atlas was a robot his whole life? It clearly shows how daichi was once a human child and was brought back as a robot just like astro.
You gotta admit, this version of Denkou and Mimi of Rainbow Valley in the PILOT version looks more... Prettier? I guess? And well the voice, I think it's still okay... I mean before I thought that Astro's voice was so girly, but then I realised that the voice kinda suited him more, since he was at the age of nine to ten. But, the 2003 English dubbed version of voice sounds was a bit too mature and it wasn't like Astro. Like, you know what I mean...
Anyone else coming here after seeing the 2015 reboot trailer? Kinda wishing it would stick with the original style or at least Astro's iconic look, like this one did. Changing the main character's design after more than 60 years is an odd choice. Although, seeing how different some of this is from the actual 2003 show gives me hope that the 2015 reboot may change *some* design choices back to match the original.
Since we've already had three series over the decades with the basically the same art style, I'm totally on board with something different. It's not like we're lacking for the old version. I even kinda dig the Hollywood movie design... though the plot was way oversaturated with stupid, Hollywood-style one-liners.
shuichiboy Ah, well, I can see what you're saying about there being no lack of the original style. Maybe I worded my original comment a little bit oddly, though. The thing that bothered me wasn't so much the style change as the character design choices made with Astro. I'm fine with the fact that he's got actual clothes this time, but at the same time they changed his eye color and skin tone. Since a change in art style can change the shape of things like eyes, nose, head, etc., I think that other parts of a character's design should be kept the same as the original so that there's not such a drastic amount of change that it makes it harder to identify the character. The 2009 CG movie also had a different art style from the usual, but I think that Astro was still more quickly identifiable in the movie than in what we've seen so far of the reboot because they kept his basic design the same. Sorry for the large amount of words, I even trimmed it down. Wait, there's a Hollywood movie? When did that happen? Not really sure what to think of that, but okay. :P
Kitty Lue I believe the CG movie was Hollywood? It seemed awfully Hollywood to me. I'll have to look it up. I agree that the new series has Astro rather toned-down. One characteristic of the original design is that he looks very human-like, but he still looked kind of off, which was the robotic side of him. It was a good balance. The new one may not have the balance right, but it's hard to tell from such a short trailer. Add: Seems the 2009 Astroboy movie was directed by David Bowers. That... explains a lot.
shuichiboy Ah, I guess I'm used to the assumption that Hollywood is live-action. Probably because I usually hear a specific company name mentioned when speaking about animated movies. Well, that clears up some of my confusion. lol Yeah, considering (from what I've heard) the reboot isn't releasing until 2018, it's hard to know what it'll be like since there was just a short trailer, and like the video we're at, I'm pretty sure there will be differences between the trailer and the released series. I do hope they get that balance right, though. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If you don't mind me asking, what sort of stuff is David Bowers known for? I don't really know much about that many directors, but I'm sure that movies directed by the same director do explain a lot about each other, lol
He's known for... well, basically nothing as a director. He worked on storyboarding for some B-level animated movies before that, but I can't imagine why anyone would give an untested director the keys to such a storied property.
+_M4RC3_Gamer not really. Certain parts of this look...less pretty. It looks like it was made by two different animation studios? I don't know. The Japanese version is better anyway. The English dub removes everything and has odd voices. Not bad voices, they just don't fit most of the characters, especially Astro. He sounds too old for a 9 year old.
+OrangeToonist I actually came to a realization that a lot of people (including me) are used to assuming that kid's voices are supposed to be higher-pitched than they really are. I'm helping out with an animation project based on The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask, and a 10-year-old boy actually tried out for being the voice actor for young Link, who is roughly that age. He couldn't naturally make sounds quite high enough to match the in-game sound-bites. Young Link's voice actor in those games was actually female. I bring this up because young Link is supposed to be about the same age as Astro is.
This trailer was made in the year 2002, and the series itself came in 2003, It looks that the concept was still in the works, for example, you can see where Astro arms and legs join together or Atlas old design, I really like this concept of the series more than the final product, I never liked how they never showed the full initial birth of Astro like the clip and the start of this trailer.
i realized. some pictures such as that astro got created coming out of the green thingy and dr.temma watching astro fight atlas were again seen in the first opening in 2003
He actually sounds like a child instead like he had a cold or a nose-related disease. I mean, I liked his voice, but it got grating sometimes. Also I prefer O'shay, Daichi's voices from the show.
Janelle Hilliard well hey you have your opinion, like I have mine. I'm glad you loved the voices. I liked them, but sometimes I could tell that it was the same voice actor.
Did you know that Jim Henson productions attempted to make the Astro Boy movie? I also think that Genndy Tartakovsky attempted to direct the film before Mr. Bowers came along!
That part where the flying horseman says humans are the enemy....is so right. We are the enemy. We are also kind, and empathetic, and so much more. But sadly, we are also the enemy.
Why didnt this actually happen... Like why is the US version not like this, I love the voices on this one way better than the ones they used for it, why did they decide to change it in the actual anime? This is a legit commercial right?
Yeah, Sony really preferred a single comedienne voicing Astro Boy to that adorable kind of boredom. She's known as Candi Milo, whose most challenging vocal role of all time was that of voicing the same old Astro Boy!
@MegaGirlyGirl95 The 2003 series. It's almost unrecognizable since so much changed between the making of this trailer and the launch of the actual series. Two major changes is the voice actors, and the aspect ratio of the picture.
I'm gonna be honest, I kinda like the animation in the pilot better than the one in the final version. The pilot trailer reminds me a bit of Metropolis and makes me feel nostalgic for some reason. I will say that I wish they kept the voices used here in the English dub instead of the ones we got, Astro actually sounds like a young 9 year old child here instead of a 12 year old.
You are confusing design for animation you like the designs more here then in the final not animation since the show itself is pretty well animated in the final product. They probably were going for a different tone anyways. But yeah here's a fun fact the show before it aired in 2003 was already done from what I heard so they had finished animating the series a year prior to the release.

Don't you all know that the 2003 Astro Boy show was shockingly costly by Japanese standards. It might've taken about dozens and millions of yen to create this piece of WTF cult classic. Holy crap, it's Unico's voice! Which means it's Misty's voice... and it's high-pitched and cute! Goddam! How could America screw THIS up so badly, when they'd already set up a prefect plan for themselves?!
Sony bought the rights to making an Astro Boy film (which became Summit/Imagi's Astro Boy) in 1997, but it had realised that the project must have been subjected to lots of casting and direction changes! As a result, it coproduced the Astro Boy show with Tezuka Productions instead.
Astro Girl Kind of, but they also share plenty of differences. For example, Gepetto created Pinocchio to cure his loneliness, Dr. Tenma created Astro Boy to replace his dead son, Tobio who died in a car accident. Gepetto kicked Pinocchio out of the house because Pinocchio kept disobeying him. Astro always obeyed Tenma, the reason why Tenma didn't want him anymore was because Astro couldn't grow or age like a human, so he sold him to a robot circus. The Blue Fairy is the one who gives life to Pinocchio, Dr. Tenma himself gave life to Astro Frankenstein-style. Pinocchio becomes human at the end, but Astro, even though he thinks like a human, never becomes a literal flesh-and-blood human. Pinocchio lies a lot, Astro never does, he's pure.
Another reason is that the Saban company would've watered down the whole localisation more often! That's because it's primarily a company that dubs and waters down anime for kids.
Imagine the 2003 series like this? I personally like this I bit more except for the voices. Why did they have to cancel the show!?!😭😭😭😭😭 And in the last episode he said its only the beginning!😭😭😭 no, I'm serious, does any one know why they didn't continue the series???
Dragonwing Warrior cats The show wasn't cancelled. It ended correctly. It's just that there was no more real fighting to do since humans and robots could now live in peace.
I know... But it would've been awesome if they had continued it! Maybe added another main character, or something that had... Ack! XD I'm getting carried away about my Fan fiction. XD
@Dragonrider1227 I think... Naruto was dubbed after this... But, the funny thing is, Naruto's voice actress played a character in the anime. Michael, the one with that racist bitch astronaut mother.
sondash159 Yeah the voice, the episodes, everything is much cooler in the real tv show atleast thats what i think. also i like the real tv show better.
I wish that Astro had that voice, he sounds really adorable

Aw, way too adorable for the final result!
You should see superboy Jon kent
The 2003 is actually the best one out of it all.
Winston Bush no
Winston Bush Without a doubt
Winston Bush rock is a villain in astro boy 2003 like in metropolis, i hope in Jungle emperor new anime series Rock reprise his villain role as An animal hunter
Woohoo! I think the teaser was dubbed by Saban instead of Sony.

Can you send my the link to the trailer in the japanese website? please.
_M4RC3_Gamer sorry the website is already closed for years : (
There's also quite a few frames from this pilot trailer reused as stock footage in the finalized series. Pretty cool.

zachanikwano Hmm... I'll have to watch that episode again to make sure. It has been a while since I've seen it so I might be remembering it differently.
its episode 50 at 5:00ish

YAY ME AND HIM ARE THE SAME AGE!
I gotta say, I hate this versions voice of O'shay. It's really weird.
Is the fan wiki, he's 13
Astro boy, what you get when you cross a bunny with a nuke.
I think it's a kiddie superhero!
Anyone prefer this voice of astro better than the one we have on the dub?

Interesting video, muy nostalgico. I ❤ it. 🎉 (Also Happy 15th Anniversary of Astro Boy 2009). 🎊👏
Yeah, this is the anime teaser that pioneered the 'Sony Pictures animation style' made popular by Hotel Transylvania.
Astro sounds like Toboe! XD They're both so CUTE!!!!
Oh my god am I getting Mega Man 8 flashbacks with this setup...
I like much more this better than the 2003 series.

Animation is effing gorgeous, I'm getting a bunch of mega man vibes, lol (p.s. I know AB came first)

i realized. some pictures such as that astro got created coming out of the green thingy and dr.temma watching astro fight atlas were again seen in the first opening in 2003
@MegaGirlyGirl95 This is the pilot, a short OVA that was supposed to be a sort of prelude to the 2003 anime.
he sounds like kirby saying poyo at times
He actually sounds like a child instead like he had a cold or a nose-related disease.
I mean, I liked his voice, but it got grating sometimes.
Also I prefer O'shay, Daichi's voices from the show.
NOOOO everyone's voices are fine.. ESPECIALLY ASTRO'S ! watch the old show to hear one of his ADORABLE voices
Janelle Hilliard
well hey you have your opinion, like I have mine.
I'm glad you loved the voices. I liked them, but sometimes I could tell that it was the same voice actor.
Yea like Rudolph
it doesn't
Never mind this is totally different voices than what I know.
Love Astro Boy 💞💞💞
Astro sounds like a six year old kid... hehe xD
Sharmaine Samantha Butac Isn't he modeled after a six-year old.
Aint that the girl of inspector gadget 1:37??
I’ve been sleeping under Astro Boy bedsheets for 15 years, and I have no regrets
Astro Boy bedsheets?!!??? WHERE CAN I BUY THAT????
@SheWolf_Warrior
They were given to me as a gift, so I wouldn't know

@MegaGirlyGirl95 The 2003 series. It's almost unrecognizable since so much changed between the making of this trailer and the launch of the actual series. Two major changes is the voice actors, and the aspect ratio of the picture.

Listen Atlas! I don't want to fight you! whoa!
Astro is so kawaii! ^_^
This is really cool!
Wow, no one from this trailer actually voices any of those characters, do they?
Do you have the source file?
@UTAU53Yui I know. Someone at the last minute decided Astro had to be a Naruto clone >
That is impressive!
I actually own the full disk set of this version of Astro boy! I think it’s really interesting compared to the versions before it’s time.
Don't you all know that the 2003 Astro Boy show was shockingly costly by Japanese standards. It might've taken about dozens and millions of yen to create this piece of WTF cult classic. This must be the reason why Tezuka Productions coproduced it with Sony (nearly always for the export market) instead.
Astro sounds like me sort of. Except more boyish.
Does anyone know what's the name of the song in the background???
I think it's Japanese composer Takashi Yoshimatsu's instrumental test song.
@@SlapstickGenius23 Do you have a link for it?
I don't think so.

@UTAU53Yui Ironic! XD
Where is this from?
Similar maybe, but definitely not Wally. He doesn't sound like that. I've met him and he's done the voice for me. :P

Wait atlast really looked like that also this trailer have even more action then the actual series what happen ?
Good
@jacoblgames nope.
Scratch that, it's not Rachel Lillis, it's Barbara Goodson. I can sohear Sang Yung in there.
Yeah, I didn't know that the teaser was dubbed by Saban, the company behind Power Rangers!
2024
@Dragonrider1227 I think... Naruto was dubbed after this... But, the funny thing is, Naruto's voice actress played a character in the anime. Michael, the one with that racist bitch astronaut mother.
ah, sony.
*WAIT, SONY?*
If I´m right, Sony haves of the Distribution rights of Astro Boy 2003 and I belive it helped in the production of the anime itself.
That's a little long for a trailer, don't you think?
Atlas beta omg 😲
@gumby2440 Eheheheheh.
@jacoblgames Nope. To be honest, I like the voices in this trailer better.
This looks like a Anime. Is AstroBoy an Anime?
Li nk yes.
I like the 2009 a little more than this
Artemis Shipman Just read the manga, it's incredible and 1000 times better than the movie.
C v prron
why doc. tenma would be evil, that's mean. :-*
Atlas and astro sound better here than the real product.......
like like like
Mega Man, anyone?
and Casshan
Mentioning Mega Man? haha! What a noob!
Astro Boy debuted in 1951, then got his own manga which lasted from 1952 to 1968. His first anime debuted in 1963, and the second one debuted in 1980.
Astro sounds like a girl
I hate Astro’s voice here. I had a better head canon voice for him.
the real tv show is so much cooler than this
sondash159 Yeah the voice, the episodes, everything is much cooler in the real tv show atleast thats what i think. also i like the real tv show better.
It's "cooler" but I really think that some of the animation in this preview is way better than in the actual show.
Where did you get this trailer?
