- Mods are truly a magical thing - how else would you describe a lightsaber duel between Futurama’s Fry and a Sith Lord Peppa Pig? The modding community has come a long way since the early days, which included Lode Runner’s level editor in 1983, or that same year, the infamous Castle Smurfenstein mod of Castle Wolfenstein. They bring new life to old games, whether it’s through graphical upgrades, enhanced gameplay mechanics, unearthing cut content, total conversions into something wholly unrecognisable… or fitting Thomas the Tank Engine into every disturbing scenario until he plagues our nightmares. But the fine art of modding requires a good canvas to work with, and some games are notorious for their open design, or accompanying modding tools, that cater for such incredible user-made creations… or, abominations. Here are the 10 Most Mod-Friendly Video Games.

Freespace 2 Open. Theyve taken a game from the 90's and modded it up to include a tonne of modern graphical elements. Along with remaking pretty much all the assets and providing a tonne of extra mods, campaigns and even full games for free. Diaspora is worth looking at if you like Battlestar. Its a very impressive project.
MeatWAD cacodaemons .. nicely done lads. Nicely done.
A pretty solid list, however I feel like XCOM UFO Defence should've made some sort of appearance on the list being a 90s game that's still getting modded to this day.
As an American that lives in a neighborhood with a roundabout, I can attest they do not. About once a month there is some crazed jerk that turns left and goes all the way around unrepentant.
We built different.
Great video.
HE DID THE NERD THING AGAIN PRAISE THE HEAVENS
Gmod is literally a game that was a mod that's community is built on mods
And rivals of aether is the most mod friendly platform fighter
Kinda feel like Sonic Robo Blast 2 should've been mentioned during the DOOM entry (that and SRB2 Kart which is a mod of that mod)
I’ve missed the iconic Ben “NEEEEERDS” sooo much
I'm definitely gonna rebuy some of these games when I get my Steam Deck! Can't wait to take my modding experience with me wherever I go!
Only few comes close to complex mods like Gregtech 6 and Foresry with Binnie's (Minecraft), Angels and Bobs mods (Factorio) and Calamity, Thorium with Fargo's Souls (Terraria)
basically gonna be a list of Rockstar, Valve, and Bethesda games lmao
It's kinda weird to put Rockstar games in there though given although there's lots of mods their games are absolutely not mod friendly. You're not going to find a GTA V mod page on Steam where you just need to click one button to install it. You need to do a bunch of shit with digging through files and downloading third party software and everything
@@SuperNuclearUnicorn : Well mod-friendly as in we'll not sic our lawyers on you.
Not even a mention of the Shadowrun games? Dragonfall has some of the best user-made mods in existence. Antumbra Saga, Brothers to the End, Codename Cherise, Mercurial, Shadowrun Unlimited, The SNES reboot, and Wolf Runners could all be paid-for DLC. The editor is easy to use and provides everything you need to make a full-fledged game.
FINALLY a video game dedicated to the mods! ...what's that? ...oh.
Sorry, maybe next time. You do important work
Such an underrated channel.
You really should have mentioned Darkest Dungeon and The Binding of Isaac. Those games have their own respectively large and varied mod libraries.
Minecraft is mod friendly but not modder friendly
Five f*cking modloaders and bunch of dramatic crybabies that yell "Forge/Fabric/backport when?!" . Better create a new game (even a mediocre one), than create a mod to Minecraft. Reika experienced this.
In Las Vegas the amount of people that drive through the roundabout in there big trucks is hilarious 😆 going up and over the centers
Kinda surprised Assetto Corsa didn’t appear, with over 10,000 mods it makes it into a racing game that has pretty much anything and everything
Battlefront 2 2005.
That madlad community implemented ground to space battles on that old ass engine.
No Quake? They released their source code for that exact reason!
With every release too. Quake 3 had an incredible filefront with 1000s of skins, maps, game modes, mods such as threewave etc. I remember downloading so much stuff back on my pentium 3 & dialup!
Ark? Hell, I can't even play that game without at least a dozen mods installed.
Chex Quest is another notable Doom mod. Also, Sonic Generations has a ton of mods, as well!
Chex Quest was super underrated as just some dumb cheap game mod. But the game was great. Never have I enjoyed a cereal product so much. I also remember my christians friends goings nuts because they were allowed to play it as an alterantive to Doom since it was "family friendly".
Wait is “NERrrrrrd” back this is great news.
Elder Scrolls - LoversLab - Family friendly
Ha, I'm in southern New Hampshire USA, roundabouts EVERYWHERE. Perhaps taking a cue from Old Hampshire?
No mention on Unreal (Tournament) and the complete engine it came with to make your own maps, mods and other games.(which was encouraged on the box of Unreal!) Seriously though missed oppertunity. The games and mods that sprung from that tool will put half of this list too shame. Also no Stalker 😥 not mad, just slightly disappointed.
So I assume the person who wrote the script does not play Cities Skylines given the most popular/essential mod is Traffic Manager and out of sheer relief and reverence that would’ve been mentioned by any CS player 😄
Monster Hunter is also a pretty mod-able game
That Stardew Valley Dope Mod was *so close* to being mentioned at the 4:20 mark. 😅
Missed opportunity, lads.
No Rimworld? Rimworld is more mod-friendly than any game I've seen.
Missing Star Wars Empire At War. There is all the sci-fi for that one.
you put Fallout 4 on the list for having tons of toys and gameplay changes, but what about Fallout New Vegas that has several DLC sized adventures? i mean toys and new gameplay modes are nice, but when you got people putting out DLC content that just makes the game ever expansive, it's a damn shame that they were overlooked.
Wow, i didn't know GTA5 was so mod-able. I might play it now
Its not
@@NaterBalls it is mod-able offline except online you’ll risk getting your accounts banned
Hey, not all of us Americans are dumb when it comes to Roundabouts. We have several in my town, and most everyone knows how to use them. Summertime is a little different though, with all the tourists that are clueless to their surroundings.
Outside of Mugen, what's the most moldable fighting game?
I'd be intrigued about how an updated version of Half-Life mod "Box Wars" would do these days.
Why so old games from 1800
The GTA series needs compatibility with steam workshop if I want to use mods.
I really liked the 2013 Sim City, I still play it from time to time
Love you guys
Hell Yeah!!! Good Day people of the world.
I wish my computer let me mod gta
* Cough Arma 3 cough
He who smelt it dealt it
Farming simulator?
how about the most unmoddable games?
Or games that are moldable but the greedy companies don't want people to have fun cugh cugh Nintendo
Any pay to win mobile games
I'm really surprised Quake wasn't in this list. That game has so many mods (official and unofficial) that it is insane. Half-Life is basically a Quake Mod on steroids. In fact, most 3D games post 1996 have somewhere burried in their code a bit of Quake's DNA. So, almost all 3D games could be considered Quake Mods.
I think the Mr X Gon Give it to Ya mod is better.
NEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERD
Half Life should have been #1. The fact it has spawned critically and commercially successful games is quite incredible.
As much as it did inspire many games, its modding scene is nowhere near that of Skyrim, which has 2.8 BILLION mod downloads for LE and SE combined on Nexus alone.
What? No Arma 3? They Gary's Mod of military simulators? Come on lol
w
Should i have to say first. SHOULD I HAVE TO SAY FIRST!?
I plan to say "OH YEAH! HERE WE GO POST TIME!" If I am ever first, thus seeming relevant and slightly aloof.
@watchmejumpstart how did you understand it?
We can mod that in. 😀
Gta 5 is anything but mod friendly
where's left 4 dead???????
A shame not to see PAYDAY 2 on this list, with some mods making the game look and play even better, custom maps, I played for so long without mods but I won't be playing without them again. But I definitely can't deny Fallout 4, Skyrim and Stardew's worthy appearances on here.
doom
Gothic 2 should be here
Hey its cool that skyrim and are here, but Where its S.T.A.L.K.E.R. that game has tons of excelents mods and its superior to fallout 4... at least in quality mods, for me it deserved a spot.
I actually hate the voiced quest mods in Skyrim. Nothing more immersion-breaking than finding a bunch of characters with American accents.
no gothic series, no like.
