Johnny is easily one of the most forgiving game reviewers I know of, he can find the silver lining in nearly everything. So if he says it's bad...you know it must be REALLY bad.
I love that you generally cover games that you at least decently enjoy, and it makes the rare exception a funny break rather than a consuming regularity.

I'm so sad we got this game instead of a remake of Peter Jackson's King Kong for the PS2/ GameCube. What a phenomenal game. Can you imagine a full on remake with modern graphics? It would be amazing.
Oh man, don't do this to yourself! You're better than this! Lol! In my playthroughs, it is glitchy with having to restart a few times, skill points disappearing and above all never knowing where I am on the map! - not to mention a massive black hole glitch in the tutorial I encountered. However, if the anonymous reports are true, IguanaBee, a small Chilean developer, only had a year to develop the game. It is also based on the Devito works which detail the prequel to King Kong (no relation to the recent movies), so those were the rights obtained. Even with that, I loved the scope of the levels and scenery, Kongs attacks and finishers and the ambition of multiple ascension areas to explore. With the supposed time made they should have scaled it back and finished it. I only hope they can try another patch because there is a good foundation there and when it works I enjoy it.
have always been a fan and it is funny when you dunk on the occasional bad game when you get caught off guard but will always always prefer hearing you talk about the games you love there is enough negativity out there and your channel's positivity is a refreshing change
Not to say this isn't a bad game, but to attack it for being made in a year, full price and have bad graphics when you love Ys games is kinda weird. Those same complaints can be made for those games.
I mean there are reasons why the game happened to come out the way it did. Only a year to build it from the ground up, since they didn't used to make 3d games (from what I've heard). Dev team with only 2 or 3 devs available to work on it at all times. Little passion as you have been contracted to make an almost impossible task (make a good inspired game that meet the expectations of a well known franchise like this, out of nothing in like a year). So I do have empathy for the devs, but yeah not so much for GameMill who contract small dev teams like this and give them projects that are doomed to fail just to cash in a quick buck.
Unless someone has already mentioned it, this game is based on the Netflix animated series of the same name that released earlier this year so maybe they wanted this game to release before the second season arrives.
You do such a good job even reflecting on games that you genuinely detest, haha. I hope you keep having the courage to try out these less-than-stellar new releases because these are enjoyable episodes--especially because you're no less balanced in your assessment! This video just gave me a good prank idea. A friend of mine who is a very very casual gamer has a PS4 but doesn't play it a ton or enough to have good context between systems... he was talking recently about wanting to get a PS5 eventually. I keep telling him how much better games on PS5 look than on his launch PS4. When he gets the PS5 I'm going to buy him this game as a gift and tell him it's regarded as the best game on PS5 and he must play it before anything else. Can't wait to see his reaction! I may buy a copy for myself too if it eventually goes on a super sale just to entertain myself with how bad it is. If a game isn't good at least if it's super awful you can get something out of it.

I know a game is bad when even Happy Console Gamer is unhappy! Can't blame Johnny here. As someone who's just getting into making games, it is extremely sad that the level design here falls through the common pitfalls we're taught to avoid at all costs. No shortage of big empty nothings with corridors that have nothing but egregious amounts of unused space, and the fact this could even be called uninspired space, as its just the same shapes, and design over and over again. More than anything though, it's just one big empty nothing. Honestly sad; game had potential to be good with some of the character models, they just needed some tweaking...

After finally "finishing" totk, I jumped into Oceanhorn 2 afterwards. Some of the mechanics and a bit of jankiness had me disappointed. Now it doesn't look so bad after watching this. Suppose I ought to push through it after I'm done with Mario Wonder.

I don't tend to get rid of things like games, even if I don't enjoy them, so I gave them a "shelf of shame" so that they stay sequestered away from my actually enjoyed games. XD
Game is loaded with problems but if they put it at half price and add a huge patch for stability, a ui icon for map detection and just some general improvements with textures etc ill try it. Otherwise, not interested. I like the idea of the game thats why im even mentioning it.
You know what game got a lot of hate when it was released? Tales of Symphonia Remastered and after 6 hours in, the game plays fine. Not sure what it was like before the update, but the game is still a blast and it runs fine to my eyes. Also, I’m sorry you bought that game. Lol

Going back and looking at that Peter Jackson King Kong game on the Xbox 360, it blows this current game out of the water in visuals. I get that its an Fps where you don’t play as Kong but the difference in visuals for a game that came out between 15 and 20 years ago blowing this games out of the water is just embarrassing. I don't know, there's something almost nostalgic about this. I don't want to defend this game, certainly not charging full price. But we use to get shovelware for older systems without people raging and it's nice to see a throwback!

For me there was no intrigue, I went with Dave the Diver instead and wasn’t disappointed. Money well spent and will double dip if it goes physical.

That's a good way to get your friend to abandon games for a while. Make sure you get them something good for after the inevitable disappointment.

I had Dynamite Dux for the Amiga, and I must say I've played far worse games.
Also the fact that Kong is a normal sized ape. Even tiny trees are bigger than him lol

It looks like a game we would have had back when the PS1 first came out. That combat took me back to a PS1 game but I can’t put my finger on it.
