I actually saw this when it aired live. This was the first Pat sketch. One of the things that made it so funny was that Julia Sweeney was new to the cast, and was an unknown, so we couldn't recognize who it was under the makeup. So we did not know if the actor was a man or a woman! Very meta. It's obvious now, but at the time it was a riot!
ME TOO!!!!
still an unknown
wait you can't fucking tell the difference between a man and a woman? it's obvious.
Yes! Same! Loved SNL early to mid 90's 😎 my fave era
@PatentlyAwesome - That's a great story, thanks! I have a vague memory of watching a skit when SNL was going to do a big "reveal" of Pat. And Adam Sandler (who was a cast member then, I think) jumped up from the audience screaming. He begged Pat not to reveal anything because nobody really wanted to know! Good times!
This must be the first time we saw Pat, because the character wasn't fully developed yet. The actress spoke with a deeper voice for Pat at this stage and some of the other mannerisms and voices she made were different. We also didn't get the introduction of "It's Pat".
This had to been it cause this is the only time the character uses gender pronouns of any kind, I never heard Pat refer to anything as male or female or find attraction to anyone, Pat just says partner, pauses until Pat is comfortable or changes the subject. It blew my mind Pat said is that you girlfriend, she's very attractive and then double down by saying I have a male and female cats
Yes, according to wikipedia, this is the first segment. Julia Sweeney also performed it with the groundlings before making it onto SNL.
Good observation!

It’s frustrating that no one has thought to ask for pat’s full first name! 😂
Middles names definitely Jesse or Leslie or something 😂
Excellent point! Or Chris's either....
I noticed your name is Chris. Or Kris. Or is it ....
@@king77solomon30 My full name is Kristian but I also go by Krissi; I have a gender neutral name too but luckily my gender is easy to guess by looking at me! :D
Patrickia
Omg Pat had a hunchback in this sketch - definitely a first Pat sketch as the voice was different
Missing the Fanny pack though, I definitely like the Fanny pack.
Really interesting character and well written dialogue. I love this
Pat, Chris, Terry....🤣🤣🤣
I so miss the 90's SNL "Pat" was a great creation, and the rest of the cast was great. :)
yeah but the angry alphabet people are like "Pat" everyday.
70s SNL cast the best
You heard it here first: @@dustinherk8124 agrees we're a great creation!
When Pat mentioned Chris, I would have asked “oh I’m just curious, what Chris’s full name is”….. “I might know Chris”….so funny Pat expresses his/her cats gender straight up but never anything about himself lol
I dont see how knowing Chris' last name would 'give away' Pat's gender - or even Chris', for that matter.
@@wylier I meant what “Chris” stands for. It’s generally short for Christopher or Christina.
@@toniroberts8117 I remember one skit where somebody asks Pat, "What is Pat short for?" Pat's reply was, "It's short for Pa-a-a-a-t! That's my little joke!"
Julia Sweeney is hilarious, how she humanizes this character.
I love cringe comedy! Julia Sweeney was a O.G ..she nailed it! I always got a kick out of her wheezy breath at end of every sentence. Little nuances make characters even funnier & memorable...
It's' not cringey. It's brilliant writing!
@@lisardo it makes me cringe. But that doesn’t mean it bad, I laugh and get this second hand embarrassment feeling 😂

Yes, Julia Sweeney did this so well. All the little inflections and noises. So funny.
its not cringe comedy its our current cringe reality.

Must’ve been one of the first Pat sketches.
It was the first. The character was definitely in development stages here. We didn't even get the "It's Pat" intro.
This one the original!
@@joylindadichamounix it definitely seems that way as Pat is just very much less defined compared to the way we know them.
These are hilarious..I miss the old SNL's
This repeating sketch was always hilarious. It still is.
I remember watching this and just dying. Classic!!! :)
Kevin Nealon's forehead Botox is awesome.
I am surprised this did not offend any snowflake nowadays and that it's still posted
lol pat is half the population now
Much smaller than that. It's just that they are motor mouths
What pronouns did Pat use.
in today's America Pat would fit right in very well 😀
Norm Macdonald: "Pat is a WOMAN"
He dropped us that nugget of insider info before evaporating
I LOVE PAT!!! It’s hilarious!!! Hahaha ❤️❤️❤️🤟🏾😄😄😍
There’s one of those things at my job unfortunately.

She looks like Roger Ebert in drag.

He should’ve just waited and watched what restroom “Pat” would go into
I’m thinking they did watch to see which restroom Pat went into on one of those skits and Pat chose the unisex restroom. Lmao!! Perhaps I’m wrong on that but it seems like I seen a skit like that. 😄
@@yearling4 no you are right!! They did a sketch about it!!! If I recall correctly the only bathroom around was unisex lol
They also did one where Pat went to the gym and right before he/she went inside a locker room, they cut away for a news break and then when they cut back, the personal trainer (Linda Hamilton) was relieved to know the answer.
That would have worked back then… not now.
Too bad they never did a sketch where Pat met the Richmeister.

@@GondolicSily
Oh, you're one of THOSE people.
"You one of the good ones" type comment.
But in all seriousness.
Being trans is a big part of people's identities, it changes the course of their lives, and of course, it's bound to come up.
Even when trans people themselves don't wanna talk about it.
Julia Sweeney is underrated. Her one woman show, "And God Said Ha!" is amazing.
This skit was a window to the future....sadly.
Julia Sweeney said that she knew someone like Pat from work. She said this guy would were similar clothes and drool a lot with that type of laugh. So when she showed the character to SNL, they didn’t think she would be convincing enough to be a man. And then Julia said to herself “What if THAT is the joke?” She decided in that moment to leave Pat’s gender unknown.
Because of Julia saying she knew a man at work that inspired Pat, I thought that would mean Pat is really a man. But Chris Farley told someone once in a room (saying that this information must not get out) that Pat is really a woman. Either Chris was joking or that’s what he really thought.
Is that the Secret Service agent who couldn't holster her sidearm?
😂
Yes. There's a comedy short on RUclips even Pat becomes a USSS agent. It's called Unexpected Hero: Lunch Lady Pat...
You didn't hear it from me, but Chris Farley told Norm McDonald Pat is a woman 🤫
They wouldn't allow this stuff on SNL these days. Too bad!!

Well it's because this is more than 2 decades old...
It seems Pat is something of an icon. I think it's because Pat seems to get along just fine being oblivious to people's uncertainty with what Pat is. They also try to be nice about trying to figure it out.

@@mrchopsticks3 If someone prefers to be referred to as "they" rather than "he" or "she", so what? Pat’s parents names are Gene and Francis, or Frances.
Don't forget Ronnie
or Tony, Toni
I'm surprised the SNL writers never thought of this- there was one sure-fire way to determine Pat's identity: A SWIFT KICK IN THE BALLS!!!!
you are sort of missing the point of the sketch - that we never actually know Pat's gender. The ambiguity is kept up through every sketch, so that the comedy can be continued.
1) I'm pretty sure kicking your boss in the genitals would get you fired regardless of what genitals they had. And probably charged with assault.
2) You think getting kicked in the puss doesn't also hurt? A reaction of "ow ow ow ow" isn't as illustrative as you might think.
I’m shocked woke RUclips hasn’t removed it yet
Seriously I thought the same thing!
They’d better never remove these classic skits. SNL sucks now.
Is this making fun of the Pats of the world or making fun of the people who don't know how to deal with them?
Anyone who messes with this clip shall be penalized by the highest standards of the motion picture academy of modern Media sciences
This was so far ahead of its time that came around behind us now
This sketch would be considered hate speech today, it would not air!
When snl was funny
Although Pat was a popular recurring character on the show. "Pat The Movie", continued with the same theme of mystery and confusion.
Lorne Michaels, the producer, and Julia Sweeney both regretted doing the movie?!?
What the hell is even that!
Bet the woke crowd love this
Man or woman??
does pat work out? big shoulders
There was a great sketch with Christopher Walken on Oct 24, 1992 where he's so confused by Pat he jumps out the window. One of his best sketches - impossible to find through regular avenues. It seems NBC went back and restricted anything that could be found remotely offensive to be viewed from USA IP addresses. Terrible practice that will come back to bite them when this PC mania settles down again.
To me the person looks and sounds like a masculine female.
no yt disclaimer? surprising.

The funny part is watching others struggle to figure out. It puts the whole idea of many folks needing to squeeze everyone into one of 2 boxes, when it really does not matter if any of us fit into any box at all.
