    Optician here. Fun fact there was a product that made it to clinical trials in the form of eye drops that staved off presbyopia. A pharmaceutical company (that I won't name from fear) bought the rights and shelved it. It has not had another study because glasses and contacts pull in more money... Greed always wins it seems.

    • @enenenergp
      @enenenergp Месяц назад +9

      There seems to already be some drops for presbyopia on the market that have come out in the recent years. Why would a pharmaceutical company shelf a product that would be used regularly by the patients, like would you not make BANK with a patented new eyedrop, compared to reading glasses that people by a couple pairs off from the drugstore that don’t cost nothing and the pharm company probably doesn’t even make themselves? Is presbyopia often corrected with contact lenses? I thought it’s mainly glasses.

    • @daveanaitor
      @daveanaitor Месяц назад +3

      @@enenenergp I agree his claim lacks water. Prescription eyedrops can be pretty fkn expensive. Ask anyone with glaucoma, which is primarily managed with prescription eyedrops.
      And to answer your question on presbyopia; no, it can’t really be corrected with contacts. See the “stiffening” of the eye’s lenses simply impares focus accommodation. Like reading a book and seeing the letters in focus 2 ft from you vs street sign yards away as your drive. That ability to adjust your eye’s focus, is what’s lost as the eye ages - your distance vision is about the same, but you’ll gradually lose the ability to see up close. That’s why grandparents need the font size blown up on their cell phones. So an easy solution is reading glasses, that change the focus of their eye to make near objects clear. Put’em on when you’re reading or knitting or anything that requires seeing up close to you. You could give them contacts that do the same thing in theory, but you just wouldn’t want to… because then you wouldn’t be able to make out things in the distance at all. Everything more than 5 ft from your face would just be horrendous blurry. So reading glasses are the easiest, most practical, and cheapest way to deal with presbyopia.
      After a few years the lens will continue to stiffen until it becomes a cataract and require surgery to correct. Cataract surgeries will improve vision drastically, but the accommodation will still be lost.
      Edit: typo

    • @enenenergp
      @enenenergp Месяц назад +2

      @@daveanaitor Thanks for a more detailed explanation, pretty much confirmed what I thought. I’m more familiar with pharmaceuticals than eye care and eye physiology. I can imagine a pharm company nefariously shelving something that would be a one-off fix for something that now requires long term medication (like say if a company found a one off cure for migraine and the same company was making a lot of money with their triptanes or gepants) but if they have a chance to get ahead of another company for long term treatment of a chronic condition it’s hard to see why they wouldn’t release it. They could have shelved it if they ran into issues with clinical studies or the results just weren’t satisfactory in a real life setting on humans. Or maybe the drug molecule was already on the market and out of patent and they knew other companies were racing to do the same and just gave up, thinking they won’t make enough profit (so I’m not saying profit isn’t a factor, ofc it is, the whole process of getting a finished product is very expensive ofc they want a lot of profit).

      Only 10? 😂 Sorry. I used to coordinate with an immigration lawyer for family law cases when we had cases in common. There was one client that got denied because the clerk didn't see some paperwork that WAS completed and there long before the deadline. By the time we met, they had already been in 8 years. The family law case took 2 years and they were still waiting. After our case was done, I didn't keep up with them but they didn't even have their post-appealed case docketed despite apparently having all their paperwork in place. I felt so bad for them. They probably could have kept their family together if their money hadn't been having to go to a lawyer for a decade (because the case starts before you file) and being able to make meaningful contact that didn't cost either hundreds of dollars a day or tens of hours of driving with kids to meet near the border for the day--for YEARS--to break up video chatting. My heart broke for them. They really did love each other but the world was so much bigger than them and just crushed them.

    the worst was that i was close to one of the more affected areas in the capital but lucky enough to be in a street a little higher than the river. had no phone signal at all, water or electricity and no car to get help with a family member. had to wait days to be able to contact someone who would order an uber for me. the worst part is the not knowing, in the era of information being in a blackout away from everyone you know is terrifying.

    As an Optometrist I can personally testify that countless times I’ve come across patients that drive with vision well below what is deemed safe. And I’ve seen the children’s life take a 180 after finally being evaluated and provided the necessary vision correction. Also not many people are aware of the importance of early eye exams. Many assume their kid sees well as they have no “complaints” but many children don’t realize what “good” vision is.
    As an optometrist my advice is it’s never too early for an eye exam! At least have your children evaluated when they’re still toddlers 3-6 years so that we can see the trajectory of their vision while they grow. Or atleast before they go into daycare or school to make sure they are prepared.

    The U.S immigration process is absolutely shit. Just coming back from studying abroad I was pulled aside for an hour to ask why I was coming into the country. I was carrying my textbooks and said I studied abroad. They asked me why and I just ??? To learn a foreign language?? I got in after that but to see they were so brain dead with us citizens coming back I can only imagine how hard it is for people coming to america.
    You can say I am being overdramatic or they are just doing their job. But I can only answer “I am a student studying aboard” so many times that it becomes exhausting to explain. I can be not okay with being questioned for an hour because it was my experience.

    As a blind person living in the US with a government job teaching other blind people how to use technology so they can finally work and make a living and not rely on the sub-par wages given by disability, it sucks to see people who can have their livelyhoods fixed with such ease not able to have access to these remedies. It's difficult enough finding services or resources that can help those of us with no possibility of gaining our sight back, but it just strikes a nerve that people who can have their lives back with a simple fix like glasses, just have no access. Sure, I wanna tell that little kid you can still fly a kite unable to see, but the fact that there's such a lack of resources or a lack of knowledge about them, just hurts my brain. as someone who lived at the mercy of immigration officers for years on a series of annual work visas, it is an incredibly frustrating process. unlike almost every other legal system, there's almost no framework for requirements of behavior, outcome, or decorum for immigration agents or officers. i've been flat-out told by my immigration lawyer to be extra nice, because if an immigration officer doesn't like me they don't need to even give a reason to deny me, and apparently an agent having a bad day has no reason they technically can't deny every application they receive that day. it's absolutely insane that we give people so much power to upend people's lives without even requiring a reason, and as moist mentioned any recourse is incredibly expensive and the most plaintiffs can hope to gain in court is the approval they should have received to begin with. it's beyond frustrating that you can do everything right and still have your whole life up in the air because of someone's mood on the day you submit your application. and btw, when you get denied for no reason, you don't get that money back, and these applications are not cheap.

    • @domiwomi628
      @domiwomi628 Месяц назад +10

      Exactly! And I didn’t even know there was any legal recourse we could take. An immigration officer has also “joked” with me that I must be wearing my Stanford hoodie to try to convince them I really went to school there. And I had to just awkwardly laugh as he checked the documentation right in front of him that indicated I went to school there. Like I just don’t get why it’s ok to taunt ppl like that or imply that I’m trying to trick you when I’m literally wearing my college hoodie at the airport. Felt like it was all about a power trip.

    My wife I went through the green card process in a little over two years. We were two of the lucky ones. I've come to the conclusion that the dysfunctional nature of the US immigration system is very much by design to actually encourage illegal immigration. However, it's not because of some BS "great replacement" theory nonsense. It's a lot simpler. Certain industries in the US prefer hiring undocumented people because (A) They can be paid significantly less and (B) more importantly, they're a lot less likely to raise a fuss or advocate for better treatment because of deportation. Companies in certain industries want workers they can completely control and who they don't have to pay well and this is one big way they get that labor.

I hope we can get lucky I just don't see how.

    • @Action_Sloth
      @Action_Sloth Месяц назад

      To add to your second point, the threat of calling in immigration and being deported is actually acted upon frequently by business owners, especially in the agricultural and meat industries. There are lots of reports and records of this happening, including from Human Rights Watch. The only consequence to the owners is a small, negligible fine. There is a massive, if not endless, supply of undocumented workers for them to hire replacements from, all of whom will be paid poverty wages and just as fearful of advocating for their rights and safety (and justifiably so). Without access to legal recourse, fair pay, or the ability to advocate for themselves, migrant workers are forced into living as second class citizens in a permanently- and purposefully-maintained underclass or face the cruelty and inhumanity of US immigration policy.

      Creating bureaucracies so we can make a lot of government jobs that require little more than a high school diploma, if that, is our specialty in the US. She's trying to get permanent residency and applied for an interview back in November, meanwhile it seems like her boyfriend will be sent back to his home country because he's dropped out of uni courses two times and is now studying nursing. But because he hasn't been consistent with what he's doing on his visa, it's unlikely immigration will consider him for PR. I also worked with someone who didn't see his wife for 3 years because she struggled to get a visa here. It's heartbreaking and infuriating what people not from Aus have to go through just to live in Aus.

      Pretty common stuff in Canada as well. Unfortunately, most of my older relatives will tell you that getting PR or citizenship is really easy, they're letting everyone in and it's ruining the country. I worked with a guy who was here for 6 years before he was able to bring his wife and kids over. Worked with another women who had been here for 3, couldn't get her husband so she moved back.

      What I really want is to stop killing innocent people in the name of “stopping” terrorism.

    The story about glasses hit me so close to home. I grew up in a low income part of L.A. in schools that were absolutely not equipped to handle the needs of all the children they had. I had no idea that the reason I couldn’t read, and didn’t learn until I was 9 and in foster care being homeschooled, was because I couldn’t see the books. I thought I was bad at using my eyes, and the resources to help guide me through that didn’t exist… and that’s here in the US, I can imagine having to go through my whole life without the aid of a tool that literally helps me survive life and it fills me with so much sadness and fear for those who go through life that way every day. Didn’t expect that story to leave me feeling so lucky and also so grateful and privileged.

    As a visually impaired person, I love what Chris said about trying to maximize the vision people do have. It really hurts my heart to see how hard it is for people to get glasses in other parts of the world. Here in the US, I volunteer with a council to help improve employment outcomes for people with visual impairments and it’s hard enough here with the access we do have. I can’t imagine what it’s like somewhere where even glasses are hard to come by.
    Thank you for highlighting this story and these organizations, Phil.

    Kendrick shinned a spotlight on his home for anyone who doesn’t live in Toronto, but I live here, everyone knows where he lives and what his place looks like, it’s no secret. Even if you didn’t know, you’d just guess it’s in Bridle Path.

      This is what I was thinking, he’s a celebrity so unfortunately where he lives is gonna be public information, so I don’t think Kendrick is entirely at fault here. Maybe to a certain extent he might be, in the sense that he highlighted Drake’s residence after people didn’t really think about it for a while or it was something that wasn’t in the forefront of their minds, but even so. Public info. It sucks that it is, but it’s just how things are and have been.

    The law passed against TikTok does smack of something that the US Constitution prohibits: a bill of attainder. A law that targets a single person or a single group of people. In this case, the people at TikTok. Article I, Section 9, Clause 3 states that "No Bill of Attainder or ex post facto Law shall be passed." And the next section, Article I, Section 10, prohibits state laws from doing the same. So while the First Amendment seems to prohibit this, another part of the constitution may as well.

They'd rather control us youth.
