Nine Inch Nails (and Slipknot too) takes advantage of so much layering/ensemble arranging for what would normally be one-person one-take roles in the song; I think it gives a ton of interest and it's this sort of planning that keeps me coming back because there's always a new way to hear it.

This just goes to show how much Hugh Padgham's engineered drums on Peter Gabriel's "Melt" influenced not only the whole 1980s pop and rock scene, but also 1990s and early 2000s EBM groups.

The drums on this album are HUGE. Not enough love for With Teeth. Another great sound is on The Line Begins to Blur- Has the big layered sound but also is going though a gate or something into a totally clipped top layer that makes the peaks really crunchy and grimy.

Very tasty, the separation is key due to the variation of room ambiences. I thought listening to NIN, that every drum had been recorded separately due to the clarity. I think the way you handled the snare reverb as mono was key, kept it really focused. Great job on a tough drum mix. Its one of my favorites due to all the nuances and you captured that well. 👍

A guy told me he hated NIN because it was just the same notes in a slightly different arrangement for every album. I said yeah, Mozart was a big fan of that as well. 😂 For real though, this is a great example of how he writes. Simple things and them works and works until you have a huge soundscape. Under appreciated by non musicians imo.

At NIN concerts, they actually DO have 2 drummers (at least, sometimes 3 or 4). Just letting you know, because you appeared to try to say that they kind of "cheat" live. This video was informative though, because it explained why despite only having 3 band members (who probably play multiple parts at separate times then mix them), there are usually multiple unnamed people playing backup live.
