    Speaking of NIN and production standards. The Downward Spiral, after a couple of a bit more crudely perceived first listens, I began to realize I never "ever" heard a more novel and ingenious set of approaches to production in a single package. Extremes, and seemingly blatant defiances to what the average producer was telling artists what to do and what not to do. I think I absorbed it another 40 0r so times uninterrupted during my subsequent morning commutes. I get bored easily normally, but there seemed to be layers of nuances to discover that kept me interested . Pure genius, still holds surprizes to this day.

    • @jonb4145
      @jonb4145 6 лет назад +30

      It really is phenomenal. There are so many great interviews from the 90's where they talk about their production techniques, gear used, and so much other valuable, super interesting information. There's even a GearSlutz thread where Charlie Clouser himself (engineer / bandmate) talks about super-super-super first-hand information about many many songs and other things. Such fascinating information.

    If i could add just one thing to RB's great explanation is: To listen to the EQ and Effects changes on the vocals. You can really hear Alan's sweeping of the EQ to make certain words more clear but also gives it such a human touch. Adding and removing FX and sweeping through EQ over the vocals are such an awesome way to make everything sound very ALIVE!

    Damn Rick, thanx for these great song breakdowns. Exposes the true genius of some writers. Never noticed all the little sounds and fx buried in the bg of this track, just goes to show how all these little unnoticeable pieces of flair can really drive a song forward and help build momentum while not distracting the listener from the song melodies & performance. Reznor is clearly a mastermind of this technique

    a great producer and songwriter too can be found in Trent Reznor
