Trent takes us on another interesting harmonic journey with this song to the point where I don't even make a decision about what key it's in! This video features a couple of clips from a few years back of me playing this song, which was what inspired me to analyze it for today's video! Next week I'll be analyzing possibly my favorite track from Year Zero. I write down all your requests and I'll be working on them in the coming months!

I work in a mental health hospital...and both staff and patients have said that this song sums up what it's like to be their at times.

This song took me through a crazy breakup. Basically after a year of being together the person they up and moved. No indication. They just disappeared. After that for weeks I was lost, confused, and longing. I played this non stop.

I love the idea that the opening chords of this song is like a bastardised version of the piano outro from Closer. Almost like he's parodying his own work that he's exhausted by. But one of those echoes he cannot shift because of fan expectations

It's "I am still inside here" and "there is no love here". I love how you understand the nuance of Trents vocals. Little quirks and "happy accidents" that stick with you and make the songs so great. I can't wait till you get to Reptile; the "oooh whoa whoa ohs" towards the end are priceless.

I agree those little details can add so much to a song. Even if not everyone notices, if they weren't there, it wouldn't be the same. I can't wait to get to Reptile too and I was literally thinking just a few days ago about how I was going to spend far too long dissecting that last bit of vocal mayhem!!
@@iximusic yes unfortunately in this day and age of disposable downloadable singles people don't spend enough time with a full album's worth of music to enjoy those little magic moments. Even sadder is that in my opinion after The Fragile, Trent became less experimental and that mixed with Atticus Ross taking the roll as arranger on every album since With Teeth NIN really hasn't been the same and the songs have become much more formulaic. I like Atticus' influence on the film scores and How To Destroy Angels but not on NIN.

@@iximusic lol good luck. It's less of a sound and more of a song structure thing with Atticus. From my understanding, listening to interviews with Trent, is that the recording process consists of Trent coming up with various "parts", be it synths or piano or guitar, tweaking pedals and what not while Atticus records on a computer. Then Trent will take a break out of ideas for the moment and Atticus will take the recorded parts and chunks and piece them together on the computer. Probably Pro Tools. This has been the formula full time since Year Zero. He did a little work on With Teeth. So the Fragile was the last time Trent locked himself away experimenting with sound design and recurring themes.

I really like how the intro sounds just like the outro of Closer, basically underlining how that particular melody is a theme for those dark, depressing thoughts that haunt even years after you've managed to overcome your own complications and catches.
Or at least that's how I like to think of the intro for this song

One of my favorite things about NIN: random out of the box chords in weird places that add dissonant tones which make the songs more beautiful and ugly at the same time.

omfg I'm so glad The Great Algorithm sent me your videos. I've binged most at this point. Been obsessing over Trent's production techniques and vocal acting while singing (who else does that?) since late nineties. NIN has been a continuous soundtrack to everything I've lived through. One thing I've never been able to do or find is great analysis of the tonality and melodicity (let that be a word). FINALLY, here's you, and the memes. Trentone's defo going in my vocab now. Every noise they put out, every meaning they seem to convey, and now thanks to you, every note played. Waiting on new ones with baited breath. :)

was just talking with my husband about how NIN has always been able to capture exactly what I am feeling in terms of tone and lyric. Things going through me that I can’t put words to, are perfectly expressed, and I feel like I am not alone to suffer with it. I was telling my husband that there were years after The Downward Spiral that I didn’t really listen to or understand from NIN. It wasn’t like Downward Spiral at all…too modern, too techie, too much commentary that didn’t feel like ‘me’ at the time. Years would pass between new albums with new songs. I couldn’t latch onto it because I hadn’t lived enough yet. Now, after growing up, having a family, going through abuse and coming out on the other side, having major health issues, and getting an ADHD diagnosis after my son’s autism/ADHD diagnosis…I get it. Everything after 1999 makes SO much sense to me now. THIS song. THIS ONE. It is my heart. I could not understand it for so long, and now it is like my personal anthem. I often tell my husband that the word “routine” feels like death. When I am forced into these routines to support my special needs kids (and myself), I feel this incredible boredom and emptiness. I feel like I don’t exist and I am just going through motions. It feels like this dissonance, just like how you are exploring/explaining the rhythms and chords. But it is also somewhat sweet because it is for my babies, and it does actually make us stronger. Structure just doesn’t sit right with my brain, it does not come naturally, yet it is part of the intervention we need in order to function and feel OK. It is a love that I have to learn and train with a very steep learning curve. The whole analysis of his vocals and music style are exactly what I do when I try to think about why I love it so much. Trent Reznor is my all-time favorite artist. I don’t know who or what I would be if I never heard his music. Thanks so much for this analysis! I love that, like Trent, you are able to put words to my feels, through music theory and expertise. Definitely subscribing, and I look forward to more analysis. Some of my other favorites that resonate with me in my life right now are “Only,” and “Right Where it Belongs.” A couple of my old favorites are “Something I can Never Have,” “March of the Pigs,” “Wish,” and “A Warm Place.” I love so many Trent Reznor and NIN songs, but those were a few of the ones that would make my heart ache in a good way.

17:40, I think that technique is what's sometimes called a unison bend, where two notes a tone apart are played on the guitar at the same time and the string playing the lower note is quickly bent up to (almost) match the higher note. There's a weird natural chorus effect or, depending on the accuracy of the guitarist, a very dissonant sound. Siren-like is spot-on 😊 great video!!

YES! I thought I added an annotation about that but I might have forgotten. In any case I agree, GREAT catch! I'm not surprised...most of the chords implied in his music turn out to be major. It's one of my favorite unexpected discoveries doing these analyses!
As a guitar player, I love this breakdown. This is one of my favorite songs to play on the bass.
This might sound weird, but this song is very similar to Bowie songs, with C major, E major, F Major and G Major. It’s nearly exact to a song like rock n roll suicide, but edgier. The discordant harmonies only emphasise it, absolutely beautiful song!
One of my favorite NIN songs. This is Right Where It Belongs are the bee's knees.

This is such a fun track to play on the drums! To me I always felt like this was another extension on the Downward Spiral melody. It has that feel to me and always has. Trent has a reason for everything he does whether we caught it or not... He truly is ahead of himself in terms of musical prowess and intentionally toys with us and I don't mind one bit!
There's a lot of treasure to be found in isolating the channels on the 5.1 version of WT, vocal tracks, isolated melodies etc.. Very handy for learning the intricacies of Trents work on that album. I'm also learning a lot watching this wonderful channel, i'm hooked!

I typed a lot of this out while doing a first watch. Please forgive me for any assumptions that later proved incorrect. Also, I disclose a couple of personal things that might be considered TMI... so, I apologize if that is not a "good thing", but please understand that I am focused on enjoying your work, sharing my experience of Trent's music and my experience of your contributions to that experience, and if by sharing something about me I might help someone else feel less alone or "unique" in a bad way, then I want to try. Having said that, it's your channel, your rules go, and I accept and respect that. :)
First thing first, there were some amazing highlights in this video. There were a few candidates for "Play of the Game"... or "video"... or something. I loved "Ninja Ixi" at 0:39. Then later there was Drummer Ixi!!! Also you practically dubbed yourself "Punster Ixi" around 19:22. I have huge affection for your style and each of these were enjoyable and entertaining. "Ninja Ixi" might be the winner, but I don't know, it's really, really close. If I look at your videos overall, as a body of work (how do you say that without sounding pompous?), then "Punster Ixi" is the clear winner of these three. I love your phraseology. "Sonic grammatical errors, but they're intentional" is also worthy of special praise. Conceptually and verbally, it is a glorious statement. Final bit here, "Crunchtastic" also deserves honorable mention. I don't mind that you refer to the G# as an Ab sometimes... I got it. I also understand why you felt the need to correct it. Same.
At 10:57 I had a HUGE reaction of recognition. I know you say it's "Schrödinger's Third", but for me, in my head... no, in my body, it IS the major I & IV chords. No doubt whatsoever. Complete certainty. Oh! At 11:50... the C#... 'yes, yes... good... we are in agreement' (sounds cooler if you say that in your head with Emperor Palpatine's voice, yeah, it's weird in here).
The "Trentone" at 15:59, I don't know if it's my favorite point in the song, but it's got to be top 3. I agree, regardless, it's freaking awesome. It manages to give a spike to the feelings of frustration, poignancy, and an inexplicable sense of triumph. I don't get it, but I love it all the same. I also want to shout out the preceding phrase, "I am still inside here". I love the soft ascending notes of that part.
At 16:34 (and again at 20:15) if sounds/feels like you are channeling Alanis Morrisette. I hope that's not an insult to you. Coming from me it's a compliment. I love the emotion she brings to her music, even if she can't accurately define "irony".
18:45. Let's talk about this for a moment. You are correct, nobody may have "blinked an eye", but the song would have been 'less than', at least for me personally. TMI warning, I'm going to share a little. For most of the past decade I was on high doses of various cocktails of anti-depressants. We were looking for a combination that would work. Unfortunately, to date, my depression is unresponsive to medication. That's not to say that it didn't have an effect on me, it just didn't do anything therapeutically beneficial towards elevating my mood. Instead, the most notable change was that my ability to experience emotions of any kind was deadened. I'm not unique, many people have this experience. That statement points us right back to the song. Trent including the phrase, "There is no love here and there is no pain" is CRUCIAL to describe in what way "Every day is exactly the same." See? Listening to this song, those 10 words are what it's all about. Those 10 words describe what I felt for so long, what it was like being on the inside. These lyrics made me feel heard... seen... understood? I had a reaction, even when I was uncomfortably numb, and very much so today... being off of those specific medications, having my emotions coming back online after so long. So... yeah... I can personally vouch for the strength of his artistic decision to include the variation among the repetition. It matters. A lot.
19:50 to 20:05. That is probably my "favorite" part of the song. Yes. He is emphasizing it. There is a very distinct reason for that. I don't want my comment to get deleted, so I won't say it. But like the phrase "There is no love here and there is no pain", the serious, measured certainty of the "but I can tell you..." section is Trent Reznor giving voice to a part of me that he has explored in much of his previous work. I'm not saying it's a good thing to focus or dwell on that, but to hear this song and to feel understood... for him to express something through music that I struggle with... so valuable. So very, very valuable. It helps in ways that all the pills and counseling don't.
"I will hide it behind something, they won't look behind" (from the album version, 3:07 to 3:16) is an important line that you didn't cover, at least it didn't make your final cut. I'm mentioning it, in closing, just because it is the third of my "top 3" moments of the song. It is so deeply meaningful for me, and I imagine countless others. When dealing with "stuff", people are often (probably most of the time) pressured into NOT sharing it with others. Sometimes this is harmful and counterproductive, but sometimes it's necessary. People who have dark thoughts, people who are deeply troubled... we can't just say what we're thinking. (I'm laughing... it's a dark laugh, denoting surrender) So, we understand the line, "I'm writing on a little piece of paper, I'm hoping some day you will (?) find, I will hide it behind something, they won't look behind." It's unclear to me at the "?" I inserted, whether he says "I'm hoping some day you will never find", "you will find", "you'll never find"... lots of possibilities, with potentially different meanings, but my larger point remains. The over all meaning of the phrase is very familiar, important, and yet again, Trent shares the gift of "being seen" through his music. I live alone. I don't interact with people except electronically over 99% of the time. Let me tell you, living in isolation, it's important to occasionally be emotionally 'seen'.

When my 7 year old heard this song she took about 20 seconds of listening to shout, "Daddy throw this on my playlist please!" which was what confirmed for me that we'd be friends when she becomes an adult.
9:04 That beat boxing was on point. Ha 11:38 is the illest part of that song for me.
It's fascinating to hear someone analyse songs I intuitively like although I have no musical knowledge (and a very bad musical ear). NIN resonates with me both because of the melody and the lyrics. When I first heard that sound, I immediately thought it mirrored perfectly the narrative of a very influential book of my formative years, Orwell's 1984. Although I'm not alone to have pointed it out, as far as I know, there is no direct link with the novel and it's just a coincidence - that said, totalitarianism and thought control are certainly themes NIN explored on this album and even more so on Year Zero. More probably this is trademark Reznor's existential search, with lyrics such as "I believe I can see the future cause I repeat the same routine" throwing backs to the likes of "Watching fate as it flow down the path we have chose" (We're In This Together) or "There is no love here and there is no pain" to "I focus on the pain the only thing that's real" (Hurt), but it illustrates just how NIN music and lyrics can be so eerily evocative and universal.
Ironically enough, I listen to this song everyday. Not the best song to listen to while commuting to and from work, and while working lol! but I love this analysis, and I love the content! Never took time to delve into the technical compositions and this made me realize just how brilliant Trent Reznor is! Well done!

At some point I'd like to introduce more basic theory and ear training concepts in separate videos, because I think theory can seem inaccessible to a lot of people if they are not technically minded...I learn more intuitively myself so maybe I can help others out a little!
@@iximusic actually that would be really cool, the videos about music theory and stuff. Cause I think we all had basic musical knowledge classes in school... I guess it's the case in USA and Canada and Europe too, right? Cause in Russia it is. But it was like "yeah, another Russian folk song? Thanks, but no, thanks" And so we skipped classes like crazy. Yeah, anyway, that's why there's no new Chaikovsky, Shostakovich, Sviridov and so on. The music classes are really boring!
Also about this idea of music without chords. It's very natural to music, I just realized that. Some modes or scales of Arab music or Turkish or Indian or whatever are microtonal... And I think that a note between c and d would sound weird with any of our chords... Cool, dude. I sound like a stoner, sorry

Hellooo fellow music geek! So since you're a newer NIN fan and had the entire discography (except Ghosts V and VI) to choose from, I have to ask - how did you start? What song, what album? It's pretty amazing to know that music can be the most soothing, consistent companion when life is challenging. I obviously knew of the more popular tracks of Closer and Hurt, but I remember accidentally playing shuffle on Spotify and In This Twilight from Year Zero started playing. From there I was like “WTF?! MORE PLEASE!” And boy was there SO MUCH more. Throughout the early weeks of the pandemic, I went down a rabbit hole of Trent and NIN’s music. I felt it was a perfect channel for all the rage, confusion, and stress during that time when it was hard to even articulate it myself. To this day I’m still finding new details within the music that make me giddy and further proves Trent’s status as a GENIUS. Sorry for the long babbling, but Trent’s work has definitely had a huge impact on me in the the year I’ve been listening to it. In fact I just heard Over and Out for the first time this week (even though I thought I listened to Bad Witch all the way through!) It’s truly incredible what some people are capable of creative. One of the greatest gifts of us troubled humans!
@@MrMovieManMatt Oooh "In This Twilight" is amazing and I can see why that caught your ear. It's on my analysis list. I still find details in the music I hadn't heard before and it's been over 20 years. I love that there are always more gems to be discovered. Don't apologize for babbling, I make 20-minute videos of me babbling ;)

I had to.come back and listen to this video again, @ixi, this song has become a bit of an obsession recently with covid living! There is something comforting and inclusive about the baseline that is a bit addictive. At the same time it makes me feel like me punching the air when that crescendo hits with 'what else I can do'. Thanks as ever for your work - is it nearly Monday again yet? 😜
and to think he made this whole album because of his cocaine addiction its crazy! just love this record so much! cant pick a single TRACK, cause i love all of them!

17:39: The guitar effects are a slight bit of string bending up and then down (like an arch in the frequency or pitch), combined with a matching swell of volume (again like an arch - no sharp attack here), and the usual complex harmonics of tube amplifier overdrive distortion (which give it that stressed feeling). I also like how he uses the piano low registers where bass would typically go after the breakdown. This song is battling it out with a few others to be my favorite NIN song ('Where is Everybody', anybody?), after totally not getting it my first few listens. Dave Grohl on drums, BTW.

Dave Grohl! Man I had no idea. I learned recently he played on this album because there was this cute video of him recalling his difficulty in perceiving the downbeat of With Teeth. Trying to find it.

This one is one of my favorites... tho I mostly only listen to nails... so favorite changes alot. It's "I am still inside here." Voting for Satellite I think on Hesitation Marks. I love that album... its so funky.
Ha yes it's super funky. Satellite has that stank-face rhythm guitar riff near the end!
i also thought he sang "i'm still inside her" lmao, it would make sense with the line "a little bit comes bleeding through", even though "...inside HERE" makes much more sense in the context of the entire topic of the song

This is such a dorky idea to pick apart a song, especially by an artist who switches from technical/mathematical to purely emotional back and forth. I almost not clicked on it. And then. Everything you say is so, you feel, is so honest and vulnerable and correct. I am a music dork. And maybe I didn't know it. This is so weird. I'm a mega-NIN fan but I never knew he said "love" in this song. I always thought he said "laws." As in, "there is no laws here, and there is no pain" -- and I always pictured it as the suicidal thought speaking in that moment in the song, inviting him to a place of no pain (and I liked the line, even though it sounded grammatically incorrect--"trententional"). Weird how one word can change an entire meaning.
I thought he said laws too, but then I would think it was love...then laws. I could never decide. Finally I looked it up. You're not alone!
