  • The Spanish ruled Texas for 300 years and left and indellible mark. The missions, longhorn cattle, our very culture owes a great deal to the Spanish, and that's not to mention the language, which still designates many of our rivers, counties, and towns, even if we do hack it to pieces. Helotes!

I lived in SA for 12 years. I lived not too far down Bandera Road and would visit Floore's and El Chapparal once in a while. In 2000, I got transferred to Utah. Funny as it may be, I met Mike Ryan at a local country bar here in Ogden Utah called The Outlaw. Mike puts on a good show!
Goes to show you just how small a world we live in. 🌎

While in Dallas on business, in '03 or '04. I planned a weekend trip here to see James McMurtry at Floore's. I was lucky enough to see Scott Miller and the Commonwealth open the show, and had a second favorite band!
What a great trip, the people, the town and the show are etched in my mind. One of the bartenders gave me a poster promoting the show that hung on the wall of my friends barber shop until his closing during covid.
    Love your videos Chet!

Thank you for this video! This is where I live. Loved watching your take on the town. Now I need to go to el chaparral for dinner! Really love Charlie and he knew my parents as we would always go eat there prior to living in Helotes when I was young. There was a race track ( horses) in Bandera and we would eat all eat there when heading from a day of betting on the ponies!

I have the pleasure to live here and we love it. Used to be lots of cattle ranchers everywhere, where stands schools and shopping centers now, but it still has a small town feel yet with everything convenient nearby. I love that Government Canyon is close by and we’re right on the edge of the Hill Country. We can get away from civilization in literally minutes! All these places you visited are some of my favorites. My children worked at El Chap many years ago, back when the restaurant was in the old house! Charlie was always such a great guy, even giving my kids a ride home as he lived up the street from us. Thanks for visiting Helotes! There is more that goes on here, such as the Cornyval, and the Highland Games and more but that’s for your next visit maybe!

The first time I walked in to Floores it was after marching in the Helotes Cornyval parade with the Pat Neff Jr.High band. After marching through Od Town we would all go into Floores and belly up to the bar and get some Barq’s Root Beer and Nehi’s. I was probably 12. Later on it would be the John Marshall High School reunions that were held there. Then we bellied up to the bar for real beer. Many times. I got to see Willie and the family there one time and now I get to say Willie Nelson signed my Fishing Texas hat at Floores Country Store. And I got to play there once with my band the S.A. Blue Cats and some gospel brunches with Miss Neesie and the Earfood Orchestra. I pretty much grew up at Floores. The first honky tonk I ever walked in to. Way too many stories. I could write a book.

I agree somewhat and voiced my dissatisfaction to the staff. If you wouldn’t print the words “Let’s Go Brandon” is supposed to represent on your coffee, maybe it’s inappropriate to do the dog whistle. But I will say that after trying the cream puff and coffee, that it is outstanding. So I say let’s all go there and just keep harassing them (politely) about the politics. Maybe coffee is something that can bring us all together after all.

Helote comes from the Spanish word for corn cob. Elote as we know it is a specific corn dish. Corn is also Maiz in Spanish when referring to the corn kernels or using the ingredient in a dish.

If you pronounce Bexar as "Bear", then why don't you pronounce Texas as"Tear" (No, not like you are all lcryin', more like you are gonna rip something to shreads).
Try "beh HAR", rhymes with jar.
