  • Could I have ADHD and autism? After being diagnosed with autism in 2016, last year I realised I have some traits of ADHD in the mix as well. Whilst I wait for official assessment I made this video to talk about my situation. Including:
    -some common ADHD traits
what is the difference between ADHD and autism and how do you know if you have both
The online ADHD test that I took: psychcentral.c...

@@g3orgie autism spectrum disorder. That’s what it stands for. Spectrum disorder means it varies between people and effects people differently. There’s a helpful quote, “If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.” It implies that since you’ve only met one person with autism, you only have one experience with an autistic person, and no other experience will be or had to be the exact same as that experience.
Bottom line: everyone with autism is different. No hate taken I guess? Weird way to put that, I guess, but I don’t see your comment as hateful.

When I was a kid I was diagnosed with adhd and depression. Fast forward 30+ years and I can see these same attributes in my son. I decided we should both be tested at the same time and I find out that I have adhd and autism. I'm also bipolar with depression and intense anxiety. I didn't recognize these things before they were named but now I see it throughout my life and it finally makes sense to me. Thank you for sharing your experiences. It’s absolutely exhausting trying to balance and maintain all aspects of life. This lead to ASD burnout. The best thing to come from dx? Being kinder to myself for first time. ☺️ Also ADHD meds help me a lot. Good luck.

I got diagnosed with both ADHD and autism aged 33 (last year). The ADHD meds have been really useful. The diagnostician said that many autistic people don't get diagnosed with ADHD as too many clinicians think 'poor executive functioning' accounts for the ADHD symptoms - particularly for women.

Yes!!! I am pretty sure that I have ADHD (or very strong traits) besides ASD, and I am thinking about trying to get a diagnosis. I need a structure and routine, but then find it too boring to stick to. I always need novelty, I mostly get so bored, I could scream, a boredom that has nothing to do with "nothing to do".
I am very restless, I need to do tons of workouts and exercise to keep that in check, revision is a nightmare, writing an essay a nightmare and takes me forever. I do badly in exams, because I can't do the revision, I can't focus on the exam and and and....
Yes, I would love more content on both, thank you!

Same. I have no diagnosis for either but after hearing someone describing thier internal dialog I started to get more info and all my weird and unrelatable "quirks" are relatable. I thought I had just ADHD. But the sensory issues and social queue cluelessness.... Is not from forgetting anything it's from avoiding eye contact, trying to gauge the right way to walk, talk, and space myself to act like a normal human. I am very disgusted with societies stigmas and stereotyping so I just want to avoid all together getting labelled. One thing that's been very difficult for me is after I believe I caught the coronavirus in April, I forgot that my sense of taste and smell had gone while I was mildly I'll. Being almost 6 months later and I still do not have my sense of smell and taste back. It's making me realize what's giving me this insecurity and inability to feel satisfied when normally I would. Took me a while to acknowledge oh hey my taste buds are not really working and food hasn't tasted and that's a huge let done at least three times a day. How do I combat the depression I find myself deeply entrenched in? I can function just fine but I feel like I've got a brick wall, not only that the ways in which I need help are a lost cause. It's just about as annoying as all hell to lose taste and smell. I hate this virus. I hate that I can't tell if I have bad breath. My mouth feels like stagnate and dead body part. So I assume I should swish my mouth with rubbing alcohol and bleach. Or maybe hydrochloric acid. And I've been hearing high pitch electric sounds that are pretty painful. I just think I'm going to overthink myself into a fetal position and actually hope I can call it a life. You know what I mean? Not a day. A life. I need people to leave me alone but not for forever just stop asking me for help, shit I need stuff. Like a healthy enviroment or a home enviroment I can control more. Like I feel as if I'm some neat freak because I can't stand the messes of slobs and thier pets that I live with.

The constant worry that I've talked too much to friends!Argh! Also realise that I may well ahve CPTSD. Now pursuing an ASD diagnosis on NHS so any tips welcome!

I’ve been realising I may have adhd/add as well as being Aspie, throughout this past year as my symptoms have been a bit exaggerated as a result of the pandemic. I just sent off my questionnaire to the service I was referred to, so that they may invite me for an in-person assessment. And the questionnaire took me two weeks because I couldn’t bring myself to sit still or focus for long enough on such a tedious task 😂 I almost didn’t finish it in time for my application to be accepted for further assessment.
Anyway, all the best wishes to you w your own exploration of adhd and asd and how they may interact in your case. 😊

This has helped me so much!!! I completely relate to you. Both my boys are autistic, one also has adhd and is a mini me. He is medicated and I did try one of his pills (mainly to see how it would affect him as he’s only 10) and I was amazed, I was focused, had focused energy and didn’t feel down (I quite often feel down). I just felt so much more proactive and was able to focus my energy instead of feeling fractured and split wanting to do everything but doing nothing. I really think medication could help those of us who have adhd and I can’t wait to be assessed.

I'm autistic and adhd and a lot of my autistic friends also have adhd (and are also otherwise neurodivergent). I only received my adhd diagnosis after my autism diagnosis, as they were looking into other ways I might be neurodivergent.
Being autistic and adhd together does mean you face more challenges definitely, like sometimes my adhd traits set off my sensory issues sometimes (as in my low sensory threshold means i get overwhelmed by my own strategies to regulate attention, due to ADHD). I hope you can get some answers and access treatment, or medication that you need.

I have diagnosed ADHD (and anxiety, ptsd, depression), and am beginning assessment for Autism, I’m 99% sure I am autistic but because of childhood trauma/ptsd it’s always been pushed aside by therapists.
I would say for future to be careful of ADHD meds because I find they increased my anxiety and depression massively, and caused me to be very paranoid and increased suicidal ideation, I tried many different meds (available in uk), and many different doses, and over a short time they always increased my anxiety badly. Perhaps this is something to be cautious about, I feel possibly ADHD meds are not helpful to an autistic person that struggles with bad anxiety, that’s how I feel from my experience, but I know everyone is different and also some medication might be helpful is not available in the uk or readily prescribed. Thanks for this video 👍

Thank you so much for this video. I have ADHD, suffer from anxiety and recurrent depression and I am still finding out whether I am autistic as well, but your story is entirely relatable. The bit from 7:58 to 8:18 "When I go out socially (...) the person I socialised with" struck me right in the heart, because it describes my social life to the teeth. It is the reason why I have finally decided to decimate the amount of social contact I have. ADHD medication does not work for me, because stimulants give me anxiety and paranoia, which makes me act even more socially inappropriate. I've always thought I should have an active social life, because I needed the practice. I have now finally accepted that practice in my case does not make perfect. Having a marginal social life has the added benefit that it minimizes stimuli. My life has been so much easier since.

Regarding medication: Do you actually need a separate ADHD diagnosis to start ADHD meds? Since those same symptoms are present in ASD, I would think that's ground for you to try meds with your GP or psychiatrist. Whether inattention or hyperactivity is caused by ASD or ADHD it's the same meds used to treat the symptom in both conditions. Good luck!

This literally describes me to a T (minus the married life and parenting). I never thought I could possibly have ADHD since I was already diagnosed with autism and figured it was just autism causing the symptoms it shares with ADHD. That was until I saw a short comparing the two in terms of planning and dealing with social cues that I realized I might have both. Then I looked for a somewhat concise video (sub 10) so I could stay focused but long enough so I could actually learn something (above 6 minutes). This video was perfect for that and now I realized there may be a chance I have both ASD and ADHD. Damn

I'm exploring this possibility as well for myself that I'm both adhd and autistic. Out of all the online tests I have found for free I pop up very likely on both disorders. But I'm not ashamed of it, I simply wish to understand certain things I do because it does impact my job and until I came to terms with the hype probability that I had these things it was actually affecting my marriage in a very negative way as well. Since my acceptance and my wife sticking with me to understand me better our marriage has drastically improved

Hi! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us all via RUclips.
I relate so much with all you talk about. I'm also a mom, and my daughter (10 years) was recently diagnosed with autism and add. I knew nothing about both conditions and started to study books and internet. The more I studied the more I related to both autism and ADHD. So I went for an assessment, and have an appointment on a couple of weeks from now. I really hope a get a correct diagnosis, so I can get help with so much I've been struggling with my hole life. I'm 42 now and yeah... I guess you know how living all these years just feeling like I don't belong nor fit in anywhere...
Thanks so much for sharing. You and all the wonderful people who share about autism and ADHD are my favourite people on the internet. You help me so much. Thanks

My daughter has ASD ADHD and Hyper mobility. Strategies for ASD don’t always work as she has a high degree of desire for new and exciting things. She’s also very sociable. So the overlaps mean strategies to help ASD don’t always work and we really need to consider both. Would be very interested I hear more of your views on this.

Oh Purple Ella, how can I thank you for what oyu do?! It is amazing that you are willing to share with us and it truly helps!! Years ago now, I came across autism, resonante one thousand percent! Was assessed, half-assed, twice (first time was refused access to a neuropsych, second time was in the private sector $$ and the assessment was cut short, as in this professional opinion I clearly was not on the spectrum; even though I indentify with everything about being on the spectrum...she suggested that it may be possible that I had some sort of other neurodevelopmental disorder as a child...as you well know services for adults are few and far between and in my limited experience, quite poor, anyway she suggested I self-assess for adhd - which I did and presented nil). Today I've come across a few videos talking about the co-morbidity of adhd and autism, since I am not hyperactive, I decided to try and find an add quiz and by golly do I relate, yikes! Still think I am most likely on the spectrum, but now think that add is also an added possibility. Too bad that services are so ill equipped in the arena of women's mental health/disorders, etc. Anyway, thanks again for the content you put out!!

Your description of how you feel after socializing is so spot on for me. I haven’t been able to sleep for days and literally get panic attacks thinking about how annoying I was for talking so much and over sharing. That I’ve ruined all of my relationships because now everyone knows how annoying I am. I was up all night crying and having a panic attack over it. I think because of the autism and trauma I also have pretty severe social anxiety. I told my doctor and he told me to find a therapist but I’m so scared of going to one that will just make me feel worse or not understand me. Plus I can’t find one that takes my insurance and I’m poor.

For the past year I’ve considered getting a diagnosis for autism, but as I compare myself to my friend that has it, I realize there are some major differences between us. He has a huge fixation on art as his special interest, but I can’t exactly place a special interest for me because though I’m super into a lot of things, my world doesn’t revolve around them. Not only that, but my sensory sensitivity isn’t enough to make me panic like my friend when he hears loud noises. I’m also a very touchy-feely person, but he refuses physical contact in 99% of situations.
I identify with many of the symptoms you spoke about in this video. Irritability, inability to focus, not being able to sit still, frequently losing items, speaking too much, and forgetfulness are all things I’ve struggled with since I was little. I took the quiz in the description and it said I likely have ADHD. I’ll definitely look more into it. Thank you for the lovely video!

Thanks for sharing Ella, i did enjoy your video and gave it a thumbs up. I have been diagnosed with adhd and bipolar disorder and after several years have come to a mix of medications and lifestyle that make me almost "normal" (as if). I watch channels about autism, adhd, schizophrenia, and bipolar to marvel at similarities and differences. I think all are spectrum disorders, misdiagnoses, etc which confuse prescribing proper meds to address the issues. I do feel that having high order distractions (i e children, jobs, even pets) can help refocus attention and make syptoms more manageable. Theres so much more on my mind and would love to discuss more as time allows if youre up for it.

I agree, T E E. I am diagnosed with ADHD and dyspraxia but believe I am also on the autism spectrum, too. There is so much overlap between all the ND conditions and those related (such as schizophrenia and bi-polar, as you mentioned above), and I think massive underdiagnosis/misdiagnosis out there.
Tbh, if society in general was more accepting of difference there would be less need for us to feel the need to seek diagnoses. Long live that day!

I have gotten a referral for an ASD assessment, but there aren’t any nearby providers who have experience in diagnosing adult women with autism. I am 32, and have already had to develop many coping skills and masking techniques just to survive life so far. I am worried that this may hinder my ability to get diagnosed, as my symptoms are less obvious then they were. Thank you for your video, I related to every symptom you described, especially the need for routines to help me get anything done, but the restlessness and resistance to those same routines.

I am 20 and am currently undergoing testing for ADHD because my therapist saw a lot of traits in me. It's severely affecting my life at university.
I have never thought of ADHD before but I have suspect autism for a while. I hope to be tested for autism as well. But it's very difficult to find someone who diagnoses autism in adults in my area. I would have to travel 2 hours despite living in a large city and would be on a waiting list for a long time. I got really lucky with the testing for ADHD. I only wated 2 weeks for the appointment, because my therapist knows the people doing the assessment and they had a spot open due to a cancellation.
I am very curious whether it is Autism or ADHD or both.

My suspicion of having ASP and ADHD (not diagnosed) solidified when I saw someone in the comments of a video like this saying somethin like this, "my brain thrives in organization but rebels against routine." And that's a perfect description of my feelings. It's like a constant cycle of "I want to do this" and "I am over-stimulated doing this."
I'm constantly needing to do something. Rubik's cubes, research, video games, watching RUclips while I do chores or cook, just _something_ with my mind or body. Mind mostly. I just wake up on 100% stimulation-crave. But at the same time I can't handle all that stimuli a lot of the time I end up needing to pause my videos and rewind because I realize the sound of the sink completely scrambled the sound of the computer, but I keep doing it. Like I just need the sound of the thing for me to do another task (ADHD) and then I'll come back later for the information because I could not catch a word of what was said (ASD).

I identify with every symptom you described here. I had a private ADHD assessment, the psych wrote to my gp about a "shared care agreement". So my medication tritation was private but when we got the dose right my gp took over the prescribing, so I could get the meds through the NHS. The psych I saw said that most gp surgeries have a gp who can enter into the shared care agreement. It might be worth you looking into it. I do wish autism assessments weren't so expensive, I'm desperate to get officially diagnosed. I had one done on the NHS a couple of years ago which was so awful and missed the mark completely. I have hEDS too.. I feel they're all connected.

Yes, I relate to most of this, although I'm primarily inattentive. I've been diagnosed with ADHD along with all 4 of my children!!! Only one is hyperactive. And I am now seriously researching ASD for all of us. My 21 year old non-binary, intersex kid is being accessed for Autism through her therapist. They shared with me some of their discovery process and, oh, my goodness, my whole life and my kid's lives make so much more sense. Autism also runs in my husband's family and I believe he has it as well. The conundrum is, who the heck will take me seriously with these suspicions? All of us? Really? Yes. I really think so. And my Mama, as well. My dad has ADHD for sure. My kids are all struggling, and I need to find a good path for diagnosis, but they all but one (my son) display very female traits and camouflage like I always have. I'm concerned no one will take me seriously.

I have been binging your content over the past few days and 100% feel your pain. I’m diagnosed ADHD and recently came to the conclusion that I am likely also autistic. I live in the US so diagnosis processes are much different. I take a low dose of adhd medication, and I do feel it helps. However! There are also LOTS of things to learn and do that help with managing ADHD beyond meds (as I’m sure you are aware). Maybe look into other ways to help improve your focus/cope with ADHD while waiting for the chance to be formally diagnosed and medicated. Medication is great for many, and it’s not fair to have to wait so long and have so much uncertainty around how long it will take, but honestly, simply knowing I was ADHD, and letting go of some of the shame I’ve dealt with around my related behaviors has been extremely helpful. Having a formal diagnosis might help confirm your suspicions and give validity to the life long struggles you’ve dealt with, even if you can’t get medication immediately. Best wishes!! And thanks for this channel, I am learning so much and feel fortunate to be able to follow the journey of a queer woman diagnosed as an adult with Autism!❤️❤️❤️ also I LOVE your earrings!!!

I'm on the flip side. Moderate-to-severe ADHD. Social but it takes mental effort to say the right thing. Easily overwhelmed by stimuli. Would have giant screaming meltdowns as a child whenever I was overloaded.
