  • In this episode I go over how to convert from the factory 5-wire combination Mass Airflow (MAF)/Intake Air Temperature (IAT) sensor to a stand alone 2-wire IAT sensor and verify the reading in HP Tuners.
    As usual this is on my 2000 Chev Silverado with 5.3L LM7 with a VS Racing 7875 turbo.

    Everytime I google something about GM wiring and sensors your channel pops up! I'm doing the same turbo on a 5.3 using HP tuners on the stock ECU.

    I just used a bulkhead but I'm N/A going speed density for space in my LS Swap. I ordered the sensor you showed, I hope like hell it calibrates as stock for a LS gen 3 MAF's IAT Sensor

    Just a hello from an auto n marine electrician all the way from Perth Western Australia,love your vices bud keep up the great content..a kind top tip,wen soldering,crimping heat shrinking or insulating wires we always stagger each wire so there’s extra protection with the insulator weather that be heat shrink or both :)

    • @armoricain
      @armoricain 2 года назад +1

      It is exactly what I was thinking, he should have staggered the wires, and I am not an electrician, it is just common sense! And it is just an observation, not a criticism on my part! 🙂

    ICT billet makes an IAT adapter for the EGR port on the side of the intake. 👍

    As a dealer tech, this aftermarket stuff is new. So you tuned your PCM to run on “Speed Density” even with a turbo. Factory turbo cars like the Grand National have a MAP sensor with negative and positive intake pressure capabilities. I am not running a turbo or supercharger, but instead of five wire MAF sensor I was thinking to run a little bolt-in MAF in a cold air intake tube, battery is under bed, behind the cab on 67 C10. The IAT sensor just has to have the correct two wires. It is not polarity sensitive. It is a simple negative temperature coefficient temperature sensor or thermistor (NTC Thermistor). The resistance goes down as it warms up. Same as automatic fluid temp and coolant temp. If I remember right, 1 bar is close to 16 PSI, so tire air pressure is 2 bar, or 32 PSI. My question is; If I send my PCM in for programming, do I have to switch from no MAF (Canister type w/air diffuser) or use a screw-in MAF sensor used on newer than my 2003 donor, to a newer model with programming only? But adding a IAT sensor? ASE Master Tech since 1978-Retired.

    You should be able to retain the maf sensor, delete the factory IAT sensor, and then add new IAT sensor in front of say a methanol/water nozzle? I'm going to try it on my l86(cam,whipple,stall,meth)
    I believe I've seen this done before. Great video, subscribed awesome stuff

    Have you found that the scaling is similar to the oem sensor or did it need some updates in the tune?

      SnyperTuned no I didn’t have to adjust the scaling, it was reading very close to what the factory sensor was

    I was going to do this on mine p59 dbw, I see I have a stock map sensor in the stock truck intake. Do I leave that on and wire this in as well? Thanks for the help Randy. Hope your keeping busy out there in Alberta.

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  4 года назад

      It depends on the MAF sensor not the MAP sensor. If you are getting rid of the stock MAF sensor to do a speed density tune, and the MAF sensor is the combination MAF/IAT sensor, then you need to do this so your ECM can still get a reading on intake air temperature in order to do it's calculations properly.

    Love referencing your videos a lot for ideas and tuning help. Great help.
    Is there a link to the IAT that you could maybe post or share? From the looks of that sensor, it looks like the factory IAT connector from other GM vehicles like an LS1 in a 4th gen f-body and even the 3800 series 2 platform should connect right to it.
    I was thinking of installing an IAT sensor into my lower intake for use with water methanol injection on a 3800 with an M90 blower. Would be nice to see the actual intake charge temps. Thanks

    a racing turbo...; just curious what's the speed limit like,over there by where you live? (no money making stupidos speedo limitos in germany as you know, 300 kph is ok, no effing big brother, FREE, but avg general speed 146 kph, better mileage , lol) or do you use it on the track,or to tow 28 footers thanks

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  3 года назад

      The speed limit on major highways around here is 110 kph so I would need to go to a track to take full advantage of this turbo legally. I don’t use it for towing.

  • @dlawson8993

    If you do this conversion do you need to add the speed density also or just the iat?Your videos are awesome. I did my 02 sensor like you did.

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  2 года назад +1

      Yeah if you’re getting rid of the MAF sensor you need to convert to speed density.

      @LowbuckLS  4 года назад +1

      Thomas Johnson yep I’m ok, thanks for asking, my truck is a 2000 model year and I just used the factory scaling, I just verified that the new sensor read the same temperature as the old one.

      Lowbuck LS thank you I’ll make sure I got the same scaling yeah I changed mine to the card style cause I needed up going with the pro charger so I had to change the scaling and everything on that one and I don’t think it ever read right it always seemed crazy high but I think I did go with your year model so to me it seems more realistic but thank you and God bless brother

    much easier to use a LT1 camaro IAT and drop it into the EVAP purge hole on top of the intake manifold. No need to make the metal exhaust piece and all that jazz..

    • @LowbuckLS
      @LowbuckLS  4 года назад +1

      Y_la_Cheyenne_pa#on the deadlocs if you don’t have the MAF sensor anymore it could trigger that code, you need to run a speed density tune and disable that code
