I can't tell you how many times I would have walked away, starting with all the crap on the engine, the crap in the car, the eat up wiring, then the corroded coolant passages, sticky fuel, then bent push rods. You guys are super patient and persistent. You have my respect.
Well if you live in the rust belt a bronco that clean is worth fixing i seen an absolute rotbox need an entire catalog of patch panels sell for 9k theyve become so popular and expensive since the new one came out

@@2H80vids Yes, Kevin's Mom. I was in the video where Kevin went to pick up the maroon Oldsmobile (at the very end). Thanks for supporting the channel. Most people don't realize how many hours it takes to produce a video. Kevin is very dedicated to it and works hard. Very proud of his skills!
It's either in you or it ain't. It ain't :D
This week on junkyard digs we torture test the valve train and starter on a 302 .............let's begin!
"The early episodes of Roadkill, you know, the ones worth watching" True DAT!!
Couldn’t agree more.
Lol'd at this. So true.
Agreed. I still enjoy them, but Freiberger injects way too much fake incredulous enthusiasm for the minor changes that occur in the episodes these days.
I still think they are good to watch, I watch every roadkill, roadkill garage, and dirt every day with my dad whenever one comes out.
@@reidthompson8979 Hey Reid. Have you gone on RUclips and watched their very first episodes? Much different show back then. Very good stuff.
From Cali. Everyone just throws in regular water into their cooling systems killing them.
Yup let them sit with regular well water full of minerals and corroding everything over the course of 10 years.
I’m from up North but this was my first thought too. In the south you can probably get away without antifreeze so I bet people just fill up from the garden hose. But I think most of the water in Arizona is ground water and really hard, so if you put hard water in with all those minerals, it’s game over.
That's it, way it happens in the south I've seen it all of the time. week antifreeze or straight water. We don't get as cold as the North.
No one actually from California says “from Cali”
@@yeboscrebo4451 he just did!!! Boom
Its the minerals that make it "hard water" and it just builds up plugs up everything
Indeed. That is why my dad taught me to use distilled water in the rad.
Exactly, always use distilled water down here in the south, water is harder than Greek Math.
didn't see your reply, that water sucks
I assumed it was people using regular tap water and not flushing it out since its hot down that way and shouldn't freeze. And it sits and that when it does its damage whether or not someone adds coolant at some point.
In addition, in areas where you don't have to worry about freezing people often just run water without the anti-freeze, so no corrosion resistance
An addendum to the zinc discussion:
Oil detergents and zinc work against each other is the issue - this is why the amount of ZDDP has been lowered. Detergents are a lifting agent, where zinc needs to stay put. You can also have too much zinc which does negatively effect lubricity overall.
Oils today have about 500ppm of zinc, which you can think of it in terms of “the more you have, you more miles you can go” (to a point of course) instead of “the more you have, the more it protects” which isn’t necessarily true. Like Kevin says, it’s a consumable sacrificial layer. Be sure to change your oil at 3k intervals and rotella will treat you fine for most all stock to mild applications.
At the end of the day, the roller conversion is king.
Holy science, thanks Dad 👌
@@JunkyardDigs DAD?
Enjoy both of y’all’s videos! One more addition to the flat tappet discussion, there are fuel injected flat tappet cars. The ones that come to mind is early fuel injection ford 302’s and ford 300s!
@@finger1651 I’m older than I look, what can I say 🤓
I added a zinc additive when I rebuilt my old 460 but didn't the next two oil changes I did to it
Plugged up water passages: Yes it is "sort of" a North/South thing, in that there is less incentive to run a coolant mix when it won't freeze anyhow. Add to this the fact that our water tends to be more mineral rich. Of course, this is much more common in older vehicles, which is what you're dealing with. Personally, I use a 50/50 mix on all of my stuff these days, as it is unfortunately too new and costly to take a chance with. I'm also a bit wiser than I was in 1960!
Agreed, There is less incentive to use coolant where it never freezes. And then you forget about it until it starts overheating. I learned my lesson a long time ago. I keep coolant in mine all the time. I have lived in Texas and Arizona almost all of my life so I have learned the hard way.
Seriously who the fuck puts tap water in the radiator? In Greece everyone uses purified water.
@@user-bi7xd8ry5p It was done alot in Australia too. Countries hot, don't need coolant and then when there's a small leak they would put stop leak in which just plugs the whole system.
Now alot know better and still won't run coolant but run anti corrosion, water wetter or a mix with demineralised water
I was about to make this assumption. They don't have to worry about coolant freezing like in the colder areas. I want to import something from the warmer states to Canada just to avoid the rust, but this kind of scares me. Although redoing an engine will be easier than tackling frame and body rot.
Back fire be timing no
Someone is probably watching this and just remembered they have a camper in storage.
hahahaha me and my dad put a camper in storage in 2016 or 2017 and it sat there until 2018 and when we remembered about it and we got it back and it was destroyed from the rain and heat it rotted out aka i live in canada so that is why it rotted we have a lot of rain
Or they remember the need to pay their storage compound bill.
Yep I just now remembered I forgot my camper in storage almost 2 yrs ago 😬
Sun: hot as hell.
The bronco starter: hotter than that.

"What do you put in your antifreeze?" Both respond in unison, "ACID!"
You two are adorable!
Hey Kevin, just a few suggestions. Don't run cars on their original fuel tanks, always run them from an alternate source. My dad taught me that. Also, if you know you are going to have to go through the engine again, put water in the cooling system not coolant. That way you can rinse flush without having to worry about spilling toxic coolant everywhere. I think this bronco motor would have ran if you'd not used the original tank. I was honestly impressed when you first started it up. Sounded healthy. Love your channel BTW.
"I don't know if I brought a big enough hammer for this one." Underlined with a bent push rod image on the back of the shirt. An image of the Bronco on the front. Would make an epic t-shirt...

In the south west people tend to use straight water in stead of coolant, straight water causes corrosion.
yup. Im here in FL and yeah coolant 50/50 is the best.
Agreed
Yep, every small passage plugged and blocks full of rust up to the steam ports, so common, if one freeze plug starts leaking, prepare for major surgery , head gaskets water passages heater core are next to go.
If used for short amounts of time its fine ok
And due to electrolysis corrosion chews holes in the cylinder walls and ports.
Instead of using distilled water or pre mixed fluids down here, people use our hard tap water. I rebuilt my 95 Tercel and every aluminum outlet and hose had to be replaced, they were all so very corroded.
I suspected that
In the north, you're forced to run antifreeze, otherwise whatever you put in it will freeze, but the important part is that almost ALL antifreeze brands have rust inhibitors mixed in the fluid, so even if they SIT, they wont rust.
Plain water that sits = rust, 99% of the time.
Distilled water doesnt have the minerals but thats dicey.
@@icy7153 You should run antifreeze anywhere, and specifically the color your car needs. But down south here we have hard water unlike in Michigan (which i'm originally from) that doesn't have the hard water build up problem. People here in phoenix, i've noticed myself specifically, like to add the hard tap water to their vehicles cooling tank. On my rebuild the water had built up and corroded every inlet and hose with deposits. I'm saying if people used distilled water as they should to make the proper 50/50 from concentrated antifreeze, then there wouldn't be the corrosion and buildup of junk and lime.
@@TheBisexualKid1 yep
And this hard water you speak of is full of minerals, (which i just googled, includes iron, magnesium and calcium) and when u think about it, pure iron is the easiest thing to rust so that'll start to rust and sink to the bottom, then the rest will follow and before you know it we have the same issue that he's facing with the bronco
And yeah, if they did the 50/50 it would be fine, but up north, if u put tap water in your engine it WILL freeze and your engine block WILL crack, so they have no other choice.
Down in warmer climates, since youre not forced to do it kinda, its easier for people to just not care, which is really unfortunate
Flush once every 18 months, one gallon of vinegar, rest water. Run till operating temperature. Flush entire system 3 or 4 times till vinegar smell is gone.
@@icy7153 problem with using just distilled water is that it promotes electolosis. Only use with anti-freeze, not by itself!
A hard fight with the engine. Fortunately, you are a happy couple, which makes this revival really fun to watch. Good job Mook And Kevin!
This is about the fifth or sixth time watching all episodes (plus this one) of the '73 Bronco. Never would get tired of this series, truly. This vehicle has kept me entertained as much as the "survival revival" Bronco did (that one being the first vehicle that introduced me to the channel). Would love to see the '73 return!!!! Can you please put the words "thank God someone welded this push rod straightener up front " on a t-shirt . that was golden 😂👌
I'd buy that
I know pushrods are thin tubes filled with sodium metal for its heat transfer ability, that metal floats on water excitedly before exploding... That's why it's kept in glass jars in paraffin, or encased in aluminium cans for adding to the furnaces of aluminium where they cast cylinder heads etc.
As far as hitting the pushrod with a 🔨 hammer, do it gently lots of little hits, so the tube doesn't split. But go for it
I’d buy two!
@@pikethree I think you may be referring to valve stems? I might be wrong, but on hydraulic lifters, the oil feeds thru the center of the pushrod.
I'll buy one for sure!
When you service a cooling system be sure to use distilled water with your anti freeze.
Unless you plan to park the truck in a storage lot and never see it again, then do whatever you want.
You want demineralized water not distilled for a cooling system.
Deionized
For those of the cars that are living in climates that never get cold enough to freeze people just use regular water regular tap water with lots of minerals and garbage in it which rusts out the blocks. If you live in a climate that freezes the cooling systems are more protected because people are actually using antifreeze..
When you finally got the engine to light off, it sounded like a Briggs & Stratton single cylinder mower.
I work at Briggs & Stratton at the Poplar Bluff, Missouri plant and you’re right. It did. Lol
I read this before I got to that point in the video and thought you were joking but holy crap...
Reminded me of a rototiller or a old briggs and stratton push mower lol
As a small engine mechanic. That Briggs needs a carb clean. But yes. Lol
Came to the comments to say this same thing
It was still a good ending. Not every engine can be revived, that is part of what keeps this channel interesting.
Thanks for the inspiration guys!

AZ has some of the hardest water in the country too, if they just used tap water(like most people) instead of distilled water, it'll definitely contribute to this more than any other reason

Well you certainly tried! If I only had a dollar for every blue butt connector under that hood...
You would be making money in a very strange way friend.
All in all a good job! One thing a old timer taught me was regardless of your poop gas add ATF slowly down the Carb on start up and while you test run it. ATF is a great cleaner and lubricant on the valves. It works! Brake Clean strips away all your lubrication. ATF and White Vinegar in your cooling system does a good job of cleaning you cooling system. You guys gave it one hell of a try. 2 thumbs up,
Omgg on every truck I’ve bought I get rid of every blue crimp connection and put solder style ones on, literally makes a engine bat look 10xbetter

I'm almost certain that the cooling systems are being destroyed by either topping up the coolant with water, or just running straight water.
I was just going to say that, in the north we need to worry about the anti in antifreeze haha down where is hardly drops below 32° I'm sure it's easy to just top off with water or run straight water. Quite a few guys on youtube in Cali run straight water in their builds.
Bingo
I found myself doing the same when I lived in warm climates. All of my coolant was orange from rust.

A lot of people don't understand that anti-freeze helps prevent rust as well. In the warmer states many use water as opposed to expensive anti-freeze/coolant, which is why you see so much rust inside the engines.
1) As you're now realizing, it's a dumb idea to use the fuel tank on a car this old. You should have simply run the engine straight from a clean fuel can.
2) You should not have let the engine get so hot.
3) It's easy to be an armchair critic. You guys have still done well. Car restoration is worse having kids; nothing ever goes to plan.
Hah, it looks like someone sprayed a bottle of fix-a-flat in the radiator.
My guess is that since it never freezes, they think they can just run water all the time, and therefore have no corrosion inhibitors, even though you can buy corrosion inhibitors much cheaper than antifreeze, plus 10 drops of trans fluid inhibits corrosion in a cooling system of water pretty well and costs next to nothing.
As for the bad fuel despite 5 gallons, it adds to the risk but add more top tier gas and lots of fuel detergent like Berrymans, or my favorite is Star Brite Enzyme, then start it with starting fluid if necessary and drive out most of the tank on the highway without having to idle. The longer you can keep the engine running, the more fuel crap it can process. The problem is you might want to give up on the local trails because that carb needs highway unless you have the containers to drain all that fuel.
Great show, great series. Absolutely loved it. You know that Bronco so well now. Should be a straight forward fix. Great job!!

My hats off to ya'll. Knowing when enough is enough is a sign of wisdom. I've been fighting a 67 mustang since 2007. Basically the second owner passed away and I bought it in an estate sale. It was his daily driver and he loved that car. Sometimes I feel like I need to get a Priest to bless it. I've had stuff out of the box fail on this car more than once. Good luck to you love your show.
It still is a great find! Lots of great tech in this series. Keep it up!!
Minerals in water, makes it “hard water” that stuff does things like you saw. It builds up and just is a clogging medium.
That was my thought.
Yep. So many people think "That prediluted coolant is just the good stuff watered way down, yer payin' fer just water!" so they buy full strength and dilute with tap water...which in some places like where I live...is groundwater. It's been steeping in shale, lime, and other groundwater minerals for eons, straight out of the ground, through the county's off-brand brita filters and right to the tap. It's righteously taxable as real estate with as much mineral content it has in it. Too thick to drink, too thin to plow.
@@tjfritts9013 you couldn’t be more accurate
@@tjfritts9013 That’s Exactly!
@@tjfritts9013 Yep, I deal with massive heat exchangers for multi thousand watt RF transmitters. I order up 100 gallons of distilled water from a local bottler in the 5 gallon jugs when we do a flush and fill. You actually end up paying more for the deposit for the bottle than the water in the bottle, $7-$10 for the deposit, $4-$5 for the water. Most transmitters are in the middle of nowhere with nothing but well water. Want to destroy a million dollar transmitter in a few days and void the warranty, fill it with tap or well water with your coolant mix. Seen it done, and it's not pretty all to save $100-$150. Distilled water at the grocery store is usually about 99 cents a gallon, less if you buy the 3 gallon jug. People shouldn't be cheap on that, either buy pre mix or buy a few jugs of distilled and do it right.
I've heard that some guys run plain old water with no antifreeze in areas where freezing isn't an issue. that could be the cause of a lot of the corrosion in the cooling system.

People in Arizona love to pour water in the cooling system. Have had the heads off multiple vehicles that were literally destroyed because of this.
If I ever have to pour water into the cooling system, I make certain that it is clean distilled water. No minerals, no nastiness, just 2:1 hydrogen:oxygen. I don't know anything beyond the basics of car maintainance, but even I know that anything but coolant or distilled water is not a good idea.
I have never poured tap water into an engine but I have used water from a ditch on the side of the road to get home. Lol
@@Sir_Uncle_Ned just don't do it for long! The inside of a cooling system is remarkably similar to a metal-plating cell.
Dissimilar metals, check, heat to speed up reactions, check, mechanical stirring of the transfer medium, check, electrical current, check, all its missing is a good acid, and even distilled water will eventually pick up enough metal ions and whatnot to become a weak acid and start moving stuff around, it just takes a bit of time, and happens faster with heat and stirring!
Yessssssss the best way to end a New Year.
What a great idea to flush out rust in the engine block. It saves a lot of time. Not only can you see if the water pump is still working, but you can also determine if the engine block is blocked by rust or not.
