If by underrated you mean "one of the most popular actors in the role, whose critically-lauded performance took the series to huge public success and brought a whole new adult audience to the show", you're right!
I loved 70s Doctor Who, I don't think it hit its stride until season 8 but from then on until Season 16 (Which is as far I've gotten apart from Watching all of McCoy a few years earlier) it was consistently Great or just plain fun and I've had a great time watching it. An underrated moment from Pertwee's Era is the story he tells about his darkest day and I have a love for the cheesiness of the Planet of the Spiders Multi-Vehicle chase which Yakety Sax fits perfectly over btw. Pertwee is joint fourth with T. Baker on my list (Even though having a list is pointless), plus he seemed like a really nice bloke.
Agreed with you about lists, though I still somehow insist on keeping them...! Growing up in the wilderness years, Pertwee was the first one I saw and became “my” Doctor. While T. Baker, Troughton, Eccleston, Tennant, Smith and Capaldi are all among my favourites too for various reasons, I have such a nostalgic love for Pertwee. I just think he really nailed the persona of the Doctor of a being that knows he is biologically “above” humans (demonstrated through his love of the very best, fine wine, classic cars) but never makes anyone feel lesser because of it and fights relentlessly for those downtrodden (seen in the progressive themes of many of Pertwee’s stories). I think you can chalk up the fancy clothes and cuisine to wanting to make the best of his exile too, really. It’s an interesting aspect of the Doctor’s persona that has never really been explored again but I’d love to see it make a return!
@@TheMI7G Verity Lambert, Doctor Who's first producer, felt that Pertwee's incarnation was too "establishment" when the Doctor should always be a slightly anarchic rebel and a vagabond traveller like Tom Baker. I think she missed how much he took the rise out of the establishment figures he met!
