Woodturning - A Little More Than Sycamore

- In this week’s project Harry and I took a dry piece of Sycamore and gave it a bit of texturing using a woodburning pen after turning a bowl with a wood lathe.
This bowl was a little difficult as the bowl had steep sides which went pretty deep. I managed to get a good consistent wall thickness though and finished off the last bit of the bottom with a negative rake scraper. Finally, I finished the piece with Odie’s Oil.
I had a great time at SWAT this year, soon you should be seeing some exciting new tools in future videos!

Very nice. I enjoy the deeper bowls, turning them and watching others. They’re just different from the norm. Well done.
Thanks Doug! It gets a bit nervous once that tool extends deeper than usual past the tool rest!
Beautiful bowl, Robert. I really like the woodburned edge. Well done!
Thanks Greg!
Beautiful lil bowl, Robert
Thanks Ward!
Awesome bowl Hodge, well done! 😃
Thanks a lot Val!
great job mr beaver
Thank Mark!
Beautiful Robert.
Thank you Jack!
That came out cool, Robert!
Thanks Billy!
Great tool work resulting in a fine piece.
Thanks Alan! I was pleased how my tool control went with this piece. It's been a while since I've turned a bowl.
Well done, Hodge! Love the shape and the detailing along the rim!
Looks great, Robert. The burning on the rim was a nice accent. When you first said burning, I was wondering if it was going to be pyrography or Lichtenberg. Now I know. Also, Perv Harry strikes again.
Bill
Thanks Bill! I'm on the fence on the Lichtenberg. If I get around to ever using one it will definitely be the type where I can control from another room....or let Harry do it.
Looks killer Hodge! 👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks Bruce!
Nice one Hodge 👍👍👍👍
Thanks buddy!
Nice bowl Robert
Thanks John!
Nice. I like the flat tool rest that you used when using your bottom nosed scraper. Helps stabilize I’m sure.
Thanks Mark! Yes the box tool rest comes in handy sometimes!
robert thats a nice looking bowl my friend u take care of yourself ok? just remember, God loves u, God bless. chris
Thanks Chris!
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks i wanna make some bowls just to turn and sell
Nice work Robert
Thanks Siam!
Nice Robert simple but effective pyro band around the rim is beautiful
Nice bowl mate
Thanks Gav!
Good job ..
Thank you so much 😀
I use oils of odie love em
I think this is my 2nd turning I've used it on and it amazes me how simple it is to use! Becoming my preferred utilitarian finish for sure!
Good job 👍
Nice project Rob. I always like turning sycamore; it’s always so very well behaved (unlike a certain beaver we all know 😇). Great outcome there. The pyrography on the rim is a nice touch. Great patience shown there………69 ? What’s Harry on about?
Thanks Adrian, I think Harry miscounted somewhere along the line.
Question. My bowl gouge has a fairly square grind meaning hollowing is a tad difficult. What are your preferred gouge dimensions (?)
TIA
Michael, I use the 40-40 grind on the majority of my bowls now until I get to the very bottom where I've got to cut across end grain. If you google 40-40 grind there will be loads of information about it.
Using a spindle roughing gouge at 1:20 ? That's a big No No!
Thanks for showing concern but that's a 5/8in bowl gouge with a 40/40 grind. A few seconds later you can see a different angle of the same tool. Also the shaft of tool is round and not a formed tang as on spindle roughing gouge.
@@HodgePodgeWoodWorks OK, good deal. Sorry for my mistake.
💋💋😘😘
You're too kind Ellen!
69 my eye, bad beaver
I think he might of miscounted. 🤔
