My Experience Eating in the Best Restaurant in the World

- I know we're living in scary and uncertain times right now, so I thought I would publish a light hearted video that can hopefully get your mind off of things for a little while. A lot of people have requested my "normal" content, and in no way do I mean to downplay what's currently happening, but since we're all already bombarded by the news as it is, I figured this might be a nice little respite.
This was my experience eating in what many would call the best restaurant in the world, Osteria Francescana, owned and run by chef Massimo Bottura.
Through a lucky series of events, I had the opportunity to take a little trip to the Italian town of Modena where the restaurant is located. Honestly the whole thing was an adventure, including just getting the reservation!

I will admit, I was on the fence about posting this video right now considering everything going on in the world. I do not want to come across as insensitive, but I noticed that all of the news has started to really weigh on me. Making this video and reminiscing on good memories did me a world of good, and I hope this video can be an enjoyable little respite from the uncertain times we’re in.
Please take care of yourselves. Much love.
It's okay I guess, a bit of positivity is required in this dark time

I don't see why we should be grim and only produce and watch content about the virus. Speaking for myself, I'm super grateful for normal content in between the hectic news
@@theawantikamishra So true
I totally understand, some persons might not react well to this, but for me this was a delight! I smiled the whole time! Most importantly, regardless of those that might not understand, this is needed. We need moments of respite from these strange difficult times! We need to look forward to better days (which will come) and to cultivate the “small joys” (like watching this RUclips video) to keep our mental health during this lockdown period.
Dude, not even 30 sec into the video and I felt the need to leave this comment: the way you pronounced Osteria Francescana was worth of a native speaker, great job man.
I appreciate what he did there. But even I would have pronounced it the same way. I'm indian and have learnt basic Spanish.
Nandaveer U M the funny thing is is that it’s Italian not spanish 😂
he speaks the 3 main romance languages( french, spanish, italian) to be fair
Annie Evie i don’t think i should need to explain this but I’m sure you would pronounce English words correctly considering you speak English
Annie Evie oh
I’m sorry if it came off that way all love ❤️
I appreciate so much Nathaniel respecting, enjoying and talking about Italian culture, specially in these dark times my country is facing. Keep everybody know Italy has so much to offer, even in smaller, less known cities like Modena is. Cheers
Be safe,I just had to be in lockdown today this is so isolating
The most amazing country in the world!
yeah man - keep going italy
his italian accent is perfect!
My husband and I were fortunate enough to spend a month traveling in Italy. It is one of the most stunning countries in the world! We are all sending our love and encouragement to the lovely Italian people. It may seem a dark time but remember we are with you in spirit. Much love.

There's a story my parents tell me everytime about Osteria Francescana. I live literally one street away from that restaurant (i'm from Modena), so when it wasn't really famous yet my parents decided to give it a try. I was three years old by then, and I was very picky on my food, so I wouldn't eat anything that wasn't pasta with tomato sauce. This is the story of how I went in the best restaurant of the world, that served all this delicious and elaborate dishes, and I made them cook pasta with tomato sauce just for me (which was, according to my mom, the best she's ever tried in her life).
P.S. Hope to meet you next time you get here in Modena, Nat!
That is such a great story :D
I mean atleast you can now say that you probably got the best pasta with tomato sauce ever made xD
😂
Jajajajajaja bravisimo!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🤣

I would much rather spend 500€ on an experience like this than a Gucci sweater

@eshel ahrak lol
Str8 up!!!
I’ll be honest. I’ve seen videos like this of restaurants in Vegas, etc. that were like $1200 for a similar experience. So I thought the best restaurant in the world would have been similar if not more in terms of price. $500 seems like a really good deal for the experience!
Because Vegas knows people will blow their money they win from the casinos.
It's 500 Euros so the price would be different in US dollars.
jay_eye_em_em_why only like $600, it’s not that big of a difference tbh
i think here they concentrate on quality of food(taste ) , while in vegas on extravaganza (gold leaf burger and other stuff )
A lot of 3 star Michelin restaurants are actually in this price range, even lower!
Océane, most beautiful name i've ever heard.
Oh I’m surprise to hear that because it’s a common name in French and for me it’s sound just like a normal name (I’m French) but the way Nathaniel pronounce it (his accent) make this name even more beautiful !
Bro I thought the same thing
Dopo il tuo ahahahahahah
Does it mean Ocean?
The name is just as beautiful as her

This video was like a breath of fresh air considering everything that is going on around us these days. It made me think of how easily things can change and that we take so many experiences, like going out for a meal or walk, for granted. I hope that one day I will be able to repay my sister for everything she has done for me and get her and her husband a reservation at such a nice restaurant. :) Keep up the good work, Nathaniel!
Yes, I had the same sensation of being a breath of fresh air!
Totally felt the same way!
The only thing that has annoyed me while dining at a great restaurants is that sometimes the service can be a little overwhelming. Having 2 waiters standing like guards on either side of the table and refilling glasses as soon as you take a sip was a bit too much for me. I wanted a little more calm and privacy to enjoy the meal.
Yup. Once went to some really fancy restaurant while visiting some clients out in New York. They suggested the place and while i did enjoy the food, the fact that there was a server waiting there at ALL times and might as well have spoon fed me, i felt very frustrating
just ask them i gues im guessing here. But you spent so much money you can tell them to fuck off until u need them? Idk maybe im being stupid
Rey Rey If i was by myself with, let's say my gf or maybe family, yes i would have. But the fact that i'm representing my company and my bosses, i had to put on those goody good shoes and act as if this wasn't the most obnoxious shit in my life lol
I have a slight social anxiety and I normally avoid places with service like that
Agreed. Maybe they could at least give you a choice. I don't know. I remember eating at an overly service place once where I dropped something and actually thought, uh, did that even hit the floor? (Before being picked up - or caught - by the wait staff).
I had a reserved table for me and my boyfriend on May, 12 2020 but they had to cancel due to Corona virus 😭😭😭😭😭

*PATRIOTISM RISING DRAMATICALLY*
Felt the same way. As undeniably world-class as they may be in this regard, I feel that France gets a tad too much credit for their restaurant culture.
@@Floral_Green Well, I believe most people think of Italian cuisine as the best in the world.
I am from Portugal, and we do have very good gastronomy. It's just not that widely known (except for the damn codfish!)
Sir Philip Maia I say this from what’s been impressed upon me while working in the industry here in Britain, especially from Michelin Star chefs.
For what it’s worth, I had to opportunity to try some of your national food via a childhood friend that came from Portugal, and I remember it fondly. Good stuff :-)
@@Floral_Green I'm glad you liked it :D
Each country has it's amazing gastronomy so I feel like saying "this country has the best cuisine in the world" is purely subjective and may not be true for everyone.

I don't why people can get "offended" at the prices anyone who works in these type of places should realize how much labor is involved not to mention sourcing the highest quality ingredients.
It's a pretentious "tasting" restaurant, there's so many of them in Europe, especially the famous trio (France, Italy and Spain), it's not meant for the general public but for the rich folks that have pretty much tried everything and looking for a "new" taste, it doesn't mean it will be any good or craveable but "different". The only reason these places are highly regarded is due to exclusivity, for example the most expensive things are usually limited/exclusive (clothing, cars, watches, tech..etc) wealthy people eat that shit up and the general population fawns over them.
@@mackjeez Go study the different types of tasters. You have no idea what it means to tailor to certain factors. I'd bet I'm poorer than you but it looks like you have the mentality of a resentful lower middle class worker who wants to snob high quality jobs. Some people simply do NOT taste food the same way others do, just like different people handle alcohol well or badly. It takes a simple high school education to understand, it's not hard.
Also, I can't help but notice you think people richer than you are all the same. Some people are so disgustingly rich they have no need to go to "Exclusive" places. That's for people who make millions and still need an image. The higher strata of rich people have no such need for these places, they can literally get Gordon Ramsay's number in under a minute.
@@mackjeez Try to look up the definition of "pretentious" before incorrectly using it in a sentence.
@@mackjeez sounds like you're just broke and angry at rich people for being successful lmao. "oh you make more money than me? You must be a shallow and bad person then."
I have no idea why people get offended by others spending money on what they want.
Let’s not, however, defend the prices with labour and ingredients.
500 euros for 2 people for THAT kind of experience seems appropriate to me (an Italian). Happy to see you two enjoyed Italian cuisine!
I think it is 500 each....
@@BlackPipe8 Just checked, you're right. I would still do this once in a lifetime
@@votdfak it's not overpriced. The point is just about one concept: Confidence. Just like a swiss watch that costs what it costs, because when you buy it you know the materials and the craftsmanship are astonishing. Could a chinese worker do the same with same results? Probably, but the fact that it is made in China doesn't give that the same level of confidence. Now apply this concept to all brands, from Apple to Gucci, from Ferrari to Porsche and so on. The same applies to this restaurant. You're paying an experience, not just what you are eating, just like when you buy anything I mentioned you are buying the status that comes with that stuff. Therefore the price is absolutely justified, otherwise Osteria Francescana would shut down immediately.
This video has made me not just hungry for food but hungry for good service.
Hello there
This video must definitely be quite civilized!
Went to a place almost identical to this called Donde Jose in Panama. It was an incredible experience. Had to make reservations months ahead of time, only 11 tables in the restaurant, kind of hidden away in a little alley where a guy pops out and invites you in. A beautiful tasting menu with unique flavors that told stories of the local culture. Waiters standing nearby on demand for everything you need. Michelin star chef as well. And hot towels after every tasting course. Things are cheaper in Panama so that kind of experience cost me and my boyfriend only $300 total (for two people, including alcohol) which I thought was an incredible price for the experience we had.
John R with drinks. We opted out of the wine pairing but we ordered several of the cocktails they offered.
John R you're welcome, I would highly recommend going to Panama and trying it out. Panama was the coolest place I've ever been.

So, a friend of mine linked me this video, and I was like "ok what do we have here, a foreign guy talking shit and bullshit about eating in a expensive restaurant not worthing the money he spent". I jumped forward to a random point, and after I had been watching for 3 secs I realized I was wrong. So I started from the top. And congrats dude, I could have never expected to agree with every second of your speech. Eating in a starred restaurant (I did it eleven times fortunately) is not just eating. The concert/festival comparison is the same I always make to explain why spending that money is ok.
