Yes in Mexico this would be easier to eat $1 day than the States (aside from ramen)! Pointing out the obvious. Yeah, lol. Cheapest meat is pork and chicken (in the United States) so that's what I'd have went with. You can get about 6 pork steaks for $5. I guess the rest would have been ramen that I could eat with the pork and by itself.

Food insecurity is something I’ve had to go through my entire life. It’s really fascinating watching someone do it as an experiment when they don’t have to.
That looked rough bud. To stay cheap and healthy I've done rice, beans, tortillas, and pico for a week. I still do every once in a while to save some funds.
If you eat Tapioca ( cheaper) and you use cassava flour for beignets afterward you'll save even more money. best of all you will not be bloated like when you eat too much rice and los tortillas
Lechiffresix six that is not healthy though eating lots of cassava- it's mostly starch and very little nutrients. This is why many African children have malnourishment problems. Beans, corn tortillas and pico de gallo would provide a better array of nutrition.
Not that rough, Mexico makes it very easy. I live alone with 160 pesos and it's easy because of the markets in the city. I lived in Switzerland for 3 months and doing stuff like this would be impossible.
@@rgdssd but where did you get the idea that a staple in certain regions is the basic food that people eat ? lol! as is there isn't enough variety in continental african dishes and meals , but you are here informing us that because you saw images of sizeable number of undernourished children that africans don't know what each aliment contains . seriously though, how about well meaning people stop assuming people who existed before this entire planet don't know what to it.
Lechiffresix six one of my best friends is a traveling nurse and I also know a doctor who lived in Africa for a while. Both continuously treated children for malnutrition because they so heavily relied on cassava meals. If you look up the nutritional content of cassava, it does not provide much, just fuel from the starch. Beans on the other hand, do have many nutrients. It's not a criticism of culture, it's studying and understanding the nutritional content of foods. Substituting cassava/tapioca flour for beans is NOT a good idea (nutrition wise). Here's a study from an African scholar speaking about exactly what I mentioned: "Nutritional implications of projects giving high priority to the production of staples of low nutritive quality: The Case for Cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) in the Humid Tropics of West Africa" pdfs.semanticscholar.org/57ea/3dc620630c6f0eafebc7df73fbdfe002dba9.pdf
I think it’s great you realized this is the reality for so many around the world...not enough to eat or not enough nutritional value in the food they do have. I find this the real deeper message this experience taught you and I love that you showed your appreciation for your well fed appetite by creating a donation toward world hunger relief. 💖
I enjoyed following your trip on eating on a budget! ...I allow myself $25 per week and I eat well!! ...and I don't have a stove, so I cook with a microwave and toaster oven.. ...and if I want to see and talk to people, I go to the senior center where I get a meal, which includes fruit, milk, bread, and juice. ...now I've changed my routine...I rarely shop because the city sends me free food! ...and joyfully I send the $100 to mutual aid groups. ...for me, it makes me happy to share!! .
I feel like just increasing 1$ per day makes a huge difference! I ran the numbers and my dog, my bf and I eat for 6€ per day (so around 2.50€ per person and 0.50€ the dog) and we manage to eat a healthy and flavorful diet. I am spanish by the way, just so you can compare. I think it also really depends on how you can use your money, it isn't the same to buy most ingredients on the first day (when you can probably buy in bulk) than having to spend just 1$ on each day... anyways, great food for thought!

This is a great Video! Some People already stated that if you would have bought stuff raw (beans) it would have saved you a lot. And also buying flour instead of the tortillas would also have given you a lot more options. It looks as if it was a culinary knowledge problem more than anything else. This gave me a lot of ideas. I've put myself on a tight budget and the hardest thing was lowering my weekly food cost, I realized I spend like $200 a week buying ribeyes and snow crab and avocados. I've seen a lot of videos like this, and most of the time they're really insensitive to people who actually have to live like this. But this was really refreshing. You're open minded, and real. You're not pretending to tie a bigger meaning to it, just diving into another lifestyle outside of your own, whilst raising awareness for a charity that needs it. Thanks for being you, Nathaniel.
@@nellieeess First, because the nutrients are more bioavailable. Secondly, because eggs are known as a "complete protein": All the protein and everything you need to digest and use it. Eggs have iron, vitamin A, vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, folate, protein, selenium; lutein and zeaxanthin; and choline. Along with milk, it's one of the greatest sources of protein, a "gold standard." Moreover, just generally speaking, animal foods are the highest quality protein sources. Plant sources (beans) lack one or more amino acids, which makes it more difficult to get all the amino acids that your body needs. So ultimately, eggs are some of the healthiest things you can consume as a whole. There's a reason it's been a staple of most cultures in existence for thousands of years.
flour and a sourdough starter, you can make your bread for a day for 0.25 a day. That works out to be 1.5 cups of flour and 680 calories a day. It takes 15 minutes of prep time every morning to make a personal loaf of bread and feed the starter. Also, you can pour the starter straight into a frying pan and make pancakes. 1 cup of starter makes 2 nice cakes for breakfast and is only a half cup of flour used (1 to 1 ratio of flour and water to feed your starter)
That rice/bean taco reminds me of when I was younger and my parents had just divorced so my mom had to work three jobs to take of us three kids. She would go to Costco and buy tortillas, refried beans, and another topping in bulk and bring it home for me to cook while she taught my siblings school. We had it almost every night and never got tired of it. In the mornings we would skip breakfast and make a sunnyside up egg for each kid, sometimes we would have to borrow eggs from the neighbors or mom wouldn't eat. But none of us ever got tired of it and I still crave those tacos to this day even though now she works one job from home and we can eat just about whatever we want now.

Yeah, but you earn more in Switzerland so multiply it by how many times more you earn and there you go.
Switzerland is expensive but it isn't impossible to survive with CHF 7. Just to know: 1 kg of rice is CHF 1.60 (found at leshop.ch). And i didn't do a lot of research to find it. Oat and beans are quit cheap too. You're just not as creative as this youtuber.

You could've zested the orange for extra punch to something as well :P
or even caramelized the orange or banana for dessert!
Or just eat the skin.
For the oatmeal: use the zest of citrus fruit for flavoring! It is so good! Cooking the banana with the oatmeal makes the oatmeal so much more creamy and brings out the sweetness a lot more.
Amke Buss Yes! When he put the banana on the side of the oatmeal I was thinking the same thing.
Banana cooked in oatmeal is the best thing ever, no need for sugar or any sweetener either.
I love that you made a large donation to a good cause after completing the challenge!
I think the locals would have made a bit of lard and salt a priority, and that could have helped you get through the week feeling more satisfied.
I wonder how much it would cost if you bought a bag of uncooked beans? That's how I save a lot of money I'll buy a 25lb bag for about $30 and that lasts me almost a year (I eat beans every day). Obviously that would not fit into the $7 a week challenge but it would definitely help in the long term.

Lechiffresix six
one of my best friends is a traveling nurse and I also know a doctor who lived in Africa for a while.
Here's a study from an African scholar speaking about exactly what I mentioned:
"Nutritional implications of projects giving high priority to the production of staples of low nutritive quality: The Case for Cassava (Manihot esculenta, Crantz) in the Humid Tropics of West Africa"

Tacos de papa: tortilla + potato + onion
Tacos de frijoles: tortilla + beans (cheaper if bought beans and cooked with water but I understand you didn’t have oil)
Oatmeal + half a smashed banana to sweeten it
Chilaquiles tortilla (sliced baked w no oil) + scrambled eggs + beans
Sopa de frijoles (beans, onion, water) & dip plain rolled tortillas with a sprinkle of salt wouldn’t go over your budget these are some things I grew up on as a kid
instead of making it counter intuitive and using bean juice to fry eggs, just boil the eggs

quick advice: use more plant-based products and replace meat protein with plant-based protein, for instance beans and peas. Cheaper, nutritious still.
penboiyi YES
I don't think he ate any meat. Egg was the only animal product, dried beans would've gotten him further but eggs are very cheap and high protein.
It's far less nutritious, unfortunately. Eggs are the most nutritious things he ate during that week.
Selrisitai lol how are eggs more nutritious then beans and peas? No doctor would ever say that or agree
Along with milk, it's one of the greatest sources of protein, a "gold standard."
Moreover, just generally speaking, animal foods are the highest quality protein sources.
