I ate for $1 a day for an entire week. Now why would I ever do this?
The Stoics practiced voluntary discomfort/hardship as a way of building resilience, which is the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.
I thought this would be an interesting way to see how I would react when I remove one of my favorite things in life.

I love that you challenged yourself like this. I grew up with varying degrees of had and had not. Definitely know what it feels like to ration for months or years at a time and it's not fun. I really admire you for setting up that gofundme and donating to that charity. Oh, and you lacked energy because your diet was devoid of the vitamins, minerals, and protein you need, especially as you run everyday. It's not just a placebo. But you did amazingly well, given the strict budget you imposed on yourself. Thanks for sharing this video!
I'm glad that you did this. Honestly, I ran into this on and off on my life but this last year hit me hard. I started with a food allergy and now I have a whole list. Right now, I can't eat any produce from a grocery store and for the stuff we grow safely at my house, I can't eat most of it. Flour, milk, meat, fruit, salt, chamomile. That's just about it besides my "splurge items" of chocolate, ice cream (which I use as vanilla and strawberry in cooking), and pop of 3 flavors. I can never eat out. I can never eat anything from someone else's kitchen as I have to distill my water and rinse every dish in it. Honestly though, I'm better for it. I have learned to do a lot of things differently and I still am. But I feel like I'm also slowly going back to my roots as when I go hiking, edible wild plants tend to be safe foods for me. So one day at a time! We got this.

For everyone saying he should have bought dried beans instead of canned, canned beans often already have salt, fat or even tomato ‘sauce/juice’ in it and it was actually a really smart move to buy canned (or pre seasoned) becouse with dried you (at least if you want any flavour at all) have to soak the beans and salt fat and even some other spices and herbs if you want to be fancy which would have cost quite a bit out of is budget. So technically it would cost less to buy canned instead of dried.
So like if a one can of beans cost $1
And the same amount of dried beans cost $0.50
So if the can ONLY had beans (no salt, fat tomato and/or other seasoning) then yes buying just the dried beans then would have been cheaper but by buying he canned beans he got all the flavour for $0.50 instead of having to buy the salt and fat and other seasoning in the bigger containers they come in for more than $0.50.
Not trying to be mean just thought i should point it out

Victor - Not actually, there are many influencers in Mexico City that are almost zero waste. They just bring their reusables and hope for the best ;)
Yeah, so much plastic!
Yeeeeah!!!!
I can give you several advices when eating the way you did.
Going shopping on local markets here in México and buying what you did its a great idea. Tianguis and mercados here got the best prices for daily products, it can be useful for you to carry you own tuppers, there are some places where they disccount the price of the plastic bags or cups from the total price you pay.
When doing oat meal, it will give you way more free time if you just presoak 1 or 1 and a half cup before going to sleep and putting it inside the fridge for the night.
When you wake up you can eat it plain; you'll avoid the usage of the stove, the time of cooking, the time of washing cooking items and the risk of burning.
When cooking beans, you can go to the cereal locals where you bought the oat meal and buy the plain grain. We have a vast array of bean species you can try on and each one of it have different flavors, so you will never get bored of them, I recommend you bayo beans and black beans to begin with. Cheap and delicious, you can just boil them (maybe 2 hours), we call the beans with that kind of cooking process "Frijoles de la olla" (pot beans).
If you make a mixture of chopped potatoes, frijoles de la olla and tortillas..... BOOM, you got an amazing dish.
You can also try lentils, I only know 2 of them, you can buy them also where you bought the oat meal and the frijoles, high protein resources and cheap. You Cook them the same way you cooked the beans but they last around 40 minutes or 1 hour cooking.
Those 2 cereals have High protein levels, you can combine them with potatoes or camote dulce and it will give you energy for hours. Of course dont forget the tortilla and if you use the pesos you save with the tuppers you can buy chiles and give super plus to your meal. Roast them in a comal, some salt and you got a delicious dinning companion.
These are just a few examples of how you can improve cheap meals and expand your horizons with the cooking resources.
Nice video!! I HOPE you are having an enjoyable stay here in México.
Greetings from Guadalajara!!!
Best wishes.
Very good advice!
Great advice!
I don't know if the beans and lentils sold in Brazil are different, but soaking these beans overnight (8-12 hours) makes them more nutritious and MUCH faster to cook :)

Madison Fuller ! Maybe because of the potable water not being free
@@shelle3944 He gave himself potable water for free (although it's unclear if you need potable water to make dried beans ... especially if you don't soak them first)
Uhh you been a bad girl 🤔
rgerber Bro what
@@shelle3944 you shouldn't need potable water to soak or cook beans. Beans have to be brought to a boil and then simmered for an extended period of time. Water only needs to be at 158 degrees Fahrenheit for less than a minute to kill 99.999% of bacteria, protozoa, and viruses.
I think it was kind of silly not to let yourself use salt and pepper. People who live on a dollar a day do use spices in their food, they just use pantry staples and don't have to buy new spices every week, which is why it's something they can use. In India, I was told that poor people tend to have spicier food because you feel more full on less if the food is spicy.
Im from India, and I confirm that.
Zavier Alfretzie same
it's not only that, but spices actually help mantain meats longer without the need of cooling, that's why (by general rule), the warmer the country, the more spices the food have.
saaros I’ve always wondered why people who live in warmer climates tend to eat spicier foods. I figured it was because chilis grow well in hot climates, but using them for preservation makes a lot of sense. 😊
I get what you're all saying, but people are not just born into this world with a basic array of spices in hand. They need to be factored into budget at some point, and having $1 a day makes them quite an investment (and an unworthy sacrifice for just one week of eating this way imo).
I know this wasn´t the takeaway, but this really makes me want to eat rice and beans.

If you eat Tapioca ( cheaper) and you use cassava flour for beignets afterward you'll save even more money. best of all you will not be bloated like when you eat too much rice and los tortillas
Lechiffresix six that is not healthy though eating lots of cassava- it's mostly starch and very little nutrients. This is why many African children have malnourishment problems.
Beans, corn tortillas and pico de gallo would provide a better array of nutrition.

one of my best friends is a traveling nurse and I also know a doctor who lived in Africa for a while.
Both continuously treated children for malnutrition because they so heavily relied on cassava meals. If you look up the nutritional content of cassava, it does not provide much, just fuel from the starch.
Beans on the other hand, do have many nutrients. It's not a criticism of culture, it's studying and understanding the nutritional content of foods. Substituting cassava/tapioca flour for beans is NOT a good idea (nutrition wise).
Here's a study from an African scholar speaking about exactly what I mentioned:

My boy spent the saved money on a fresh haircut and new glasses by the end of the video hahaha

"Puede compramelos, puedes comprar 5 pesos 6 pesos"
This means: You can buy them, you can buy 5 pesos worth or 6 pesos worth of grain (or whatever he was getting)
His translation: You think you're edgy, don't you? I bet your mother is really happy you're doing this.
What is he trying to achieve here?

I was thinking the same thing lol
I love that you made a large donation to a good cause after completing the challenge!
I think the locals would have made a bit of lard and salt a priority, and that could have helped you get through the week feeling more satisfied.

go to hispanic and asian markets!!! u can get the best deals there :)
instead of making it counter intuitive and using bean juice to fry eggs, just boil the eggs
Your Spanish is almost native level, amazing
I think you should have let yourself use at least the spices that you already had 🤷🏾♀️
I think he wanted it to be as difficult as possible
Buy variety of legumes dry, soak overnight, cook next day with salt 1/4 onion or garlic. Much cheaper than canned and way more delicious.
I really like this man it’s truly inspiring and I love the meaning in all your videos
The montage at 4:20 was great :)))))
"it's Wednesday my dudes" 🤣🤣
That made my day
😂😂😂
That remind me to Joanna Ceddia xd
“Makeshift contraption” a pot.
quick advice: use more plant-based products and replace meat protein with plant-based protein, for instance beans and peas. Cheaper, nutritious still.
penboiyi YES
I don't think he ate any meat. Egg was the only animal product, dried beans would've gotten him further but eggs are very cheap and high protein.
It's far less nutritious, unfortunately. Eggs are the most nutritious things he ate during that week.
Selrisitai lol how are eggs more nutritious then beans and peas? No doctor would ever say that or agree
@@nellieeess First, because the nutrients are more bioavailable. Secondly, because eggs are known as a "complete protein": All the protein and everything you need to digest and use it.
Eggs have iron, vitamin A, vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, folate, protein, selenium; lutein and zeaxanthin; and choline.
Along with milk, it's one of the greatest sources of protein, a "gold standard."
Moreover, just generally speaking, animal foods are the highest quality protein sources. Plant sources (beans) lack one or more amino acids, which makes it more difficult to get all the amino acids that your body needs.
So ultimately, eggs are some of the healthiest things you can consume as a whole. There's a reason it's been a staple of most cultures in existence for thousands of years.
Respects. 🙏🏻 I've been doing this all year. I've been humbled

@@nv3s64 i am with you on that one! :)
That guys wrapping skills at 3:45 was crazy! Really enjoyed this video Nathaniel! Really interesting applying stocisim like this. Those dance moves tho 😂
This might sound super weird, but seeing you dance and so excited over very few items brought me to tears (and then to laughter again) Its super easy to take things like food and water for granted and not realize what a tremendous blessing it. Thank you for sparking immense gratitude in my heart XO
Me on $1/day: "okay, I'll divide this McChicken into 3 pieces"
Are all mean people having a party in this comment section?
I feel you can focus on good things he did and he isn't a nutritionist, he did his best and I appreciate that.
Ro se also he did it to highlight the problem of world hunger, but it seems like majority of the people in the comments focus on things that are less important... :(
That was nobodies best. That was not even remotely trying. Like, at all. There was nothing good about that.
@@wersli96 people who live on much less money eat much better than that.

Did you survive?
That Spanish translation of the Señora made me laugh. 🤣 She was actually saying that he could’ve buy less o more
Omg Nathan is fooling us? 😂
For reals 😂😂
Yeah I saw that and was like "what, that's not what she said at all"
That was the loosest translation I have ever seen. Everything else on this Chanel has been pretty much exact
I'm guessing he put it in for humor. Or maybe that's just what she was implying.
Food insecurity is something I’ve had to go through my entire life. It’s really fascinating watching someone do it as an experiment when they don’t have to.
Nice to see you genuinely have fun making this video
Ps. Nice Dance moves🤩
isnt that funny? the cheapest foods are all vegan and plant based (mind explodes) so when ppl say eating vegan is expensive I just say "well 90% of your food is already vegan so... just dont by animal products and buy more plant based food!
This gave me a lot of ideas. I've put myself on a tight budget and the hardest thing was lowering my weekly food cost, I realized I spend like $200 a week buying ribeyes and snow crab and avocados.
Was able to reduce it down to $115 a week. Watching this I saw a few things I could easily improve on and things to avoid based on your mistakes.
"Can I eat healthy for $1 a day?" *proceeds to eat only starch and refried beans*
But in all seriousness, the short answer? No. You can't eat healthy for cheap. But can you SURVIVE off it? Yes. Painfully, slowly, but yes.
Long-term? No. He's on a calorie deficit already and he'll be sorely lacking in micronutrients.
@@BANHMIZON Yeah he'd be super unhealthy long term, but he'd just barely survive. Middle ages peasants would survive off similar starches and the occasional fruit like his orange (the rare bit of meat in their diet is replaced by the beans in his, for protein). Although he'd have heart problems quickly due to all the lard in the refried beans. I wish it was easy and cheap to live healthy but it's really not.
@Ludvig B.L. He got the extra stuff like the fruit and beans from his "savings" (what he didn't use in the original purchase) so the fruit and beans aren't gonna be eaten regularly to so he can fit into the $7 budget so it's not sustainable (defined contextually here as "at least a little healthy in the long term"). I wish it was possible to eat a sustainable diet for $1, especially in the US (prices are higher so even this meager meal isn't feasible). Even if it's not perfectly healthy, sustainable would help a lot of poor people. But unfortunately over a long period of time eating the good stuff (fruits, veggies, protein without lard) so infrequently would catch up to him. :(
It's fine for a college student for a few years, your body bounces back because of youth. But as a solution to the working class it just won't work.
Check out the video where the guy eats for £1 (about $1.50) for a day. He made some pretty healthy meals.

“not nasty, but bland to the extreme” 👏 👏
You could easily just zest the orange for the aroma and stuff instead adding a whole orange to the oatmeal! Maybe a slice or two of a banana for the sweetness and refrigerate it
Oatmeal with bananas and peanut butter is a breakfast of champions my dude
