Definitely got that peanut. I kept thinking toasted peanuts. Love the overall balanced flavor. Doesn't hit you like a wall. Bought this after your review and glad I did. Going to always be on my shelf now. I could see how it could be better, but hardly for the price.
I really like reviews like this meaning common wiskey I can afford and find easily. Makers, bushmills, whyte and mackay, famous grouse, teachers there all great.
Hey Jon, great review! I’m liking that you are including the bonus comparison to other comparable products. WT101 is by far my favourite value bourbon pick. I think you gotta really dig the Beam signature nuttiness to appreciate this one.
I've been drinking Beam 35 years. Gotta get a few Old Tubs. You should compare it to Knob Creek to get that sense of age difference. I've done that with the bonded Beam. It actually helped me appreciate the "grain" or spirit driven side of a young bourbon in contrast to what the barrel does. Of course I enjoy both.
45 bucks all in. At the lcbo in Ontario. My bottle has been open for a few days. I also didn't get that peanut at first. But all of a sudden it's there. So far a pretty good bottle for the price. It's not Wild Turkey 101 (best deal at the lcbo period) but it's nice to find solid bourbon under 50 bucks in Canada. Cheers Jon
Not many reviews mention Old Tub is bottled in bond. Surprised it isn't more noticeable on the bottle, but it is there at the top in small lettering. Picked up a bottle to try, haven't had a chance yet. Thanks for the review.
I can get the 101 any time and the price is right... I may try the Old Tub if I should happen to stumble over it, but I won't go out of my way to do so...
@@WhiskyNeighbour sorry it took so long: at 45$cad/bot in ontario, it is not first on my list: but, it has SOME peanut aroma, nothing over whelming . . . after 15-20min other spices take over. Good, just not 45$-good
@@ironmantran A Fair comment. Thanks for coming back and letting me know how it tastes for you. Interesting that even after a few weeks the peanut did not come through, it sure did for me! Take care.
Old Tub has tobacco, leather, fruit. Char. It's old. It's acquired taste is what bourbon tasted like 100 years ago. It's the flavor we wished ,old crow was given again. Old tub grows on you.
great review. Would be interesting if you did a 3 way comparison with Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. Those 3 are in my bar that is until I can no longer get Old Tub. # budget bourbons that punch well above their weight class.
Great review! I also got a TON of peanut after a few weeks. Roasted peanuts with sugar and cinnamon. I like Wild Turkey 101 just a bit more because it tastes more aged with less sharpness then the Old Tub.
Good to know you got the same thing. It took a little bit of time, but then the roasted peanuts came out! In this sitting, I enjoyed the WT more. Just deeper tastes, but I could see that Old Tub would have a broad appeal, sweet! Thanks for dropping in, Cheers!
Great review and comparison Jon. I'd like to see that Old Tub over here to see what it's like. The WT101, as you know, is a staple on my shelf. Cheers buddy.
Hey Jon! I picked up a bottle of Old Tub a couple of weeks ago, have not opened it yet. Good to know some details about it, was a good deal for sure. WT 101 is a staple in my bar, quite enjoy it and is also a great value! Thank you and enjoy your weekend! Cheers!
Excellent review of these bottles, your insight is much appreciated........I love the WT 101 and now want to try and evaluate the Old Tub. Other reviewers speak highly of it,we shall see.........providing I can find it.......
Great video Haven't! Haven't done this head-to-head yet but now I know what I'm drinking tomorrow! Big fan of both. Another bourbon drinker suggested mixing Old Tub with Old Grand Dad 114 and that was awesome. I think both being from the Beam distilleries helps. I've subsequently blended a little Old Tub with some Knob Creek Single Barrel (another Beam product) and found it delicious and a good way to "stretch" that single barrel. Old Tub is less than US$20 here in Texas so it's a great value. Allegedly a limited release but I hope it sticks around.
Great blending ideas. For some reason the OGD114 isn't in my market, but I could try the KB SB blend. Already sounds good! Thanks for sharing and I hope you have a great week!
So glad you mentioned the peanut, Jon. I get it too. It's one of the main distillery characters of Jim Beam. I get it a lot on Knob Creek as well. I've read it comes from the type of yeast that they use. I agree with your review. This is a great bourbon at this price point. If I can find it I'll always have it in my bar. Cheers!
Glad you get it too. I usually do get peanut from JB, but this is the strongest yet for me. The yeast eh? I'll need to look in to that. Do you know the strain? Thanks for sharing.
@@WhiskyNeighbour you know, I'm not sure. I remember the first time I tried Knob Creek single barrel I got a very distinct peanut smell and flavor. After some googling I came across a bunch of different blog posts that talked about the yeast that Beam uses that imparts these flavors. I hope that helps!
I won't lie, I'm not very well versed in Bourbon, but your tasting notes has got me definitely intrigued. My experience with Bourbon is limited to sampler bottles of Knob Creek, Woodford Reserve and Maker's Mark. Just made a lookup at my local store, we still have several bottles of Old Tub available. I don't know if it's a year-round product where you are (Alberta or Saskatchewan?) but over here, it's a limited release. We only got 1 or 2 cases of it I believe and from what I see, it's going pretty fast. And I just noticed now sitting with your whisky containers is a Innis & Gunn Rye Whisky Cask. Does that you've reviewed or will review this product ? Love Innis & Gunn, particularly their Original and IPA (Gunnpowder I think it's called). Stay safe and thanks for sharing :)
I would suggest this is close to Knob Creek in profile. A little more nut influence. I can't recall if I reviewed Innis & Gunn Rye, but I'll check. If I haven't, I should. I really liked the bottle!
Enjoyed the review Jon. Looks like this is going to be hard to find in the UK and the bottles I've seen on line are around £100 UKP 😮 I'll stick to my WT101 as one of my favourite bourbons 🥃🥃
Jon, I was waiting for your review to determine if I would buy this one. It is available at a few locations up here. I will have to watch for it to go on sale. Great review
Yes, I would say classic JB, but for me it is even stronger. Really hard to deny now that it has come up. Honey roasted peanuts, each time! Glad you enjoy the comparisons. I love doing them, and I do them just "live" on the spot. Helps me be honest in the reactions. Cheers!
All those notes on the Old Tub sound amazing and makes me want to try it. However, you did not mention the bitterness and I do not like whiskey that has too much bitterness. The less the better. Any comments on the bitterness?
This is a great BIB..so good..
Glad you enjoy it!
Thanks for responding..Cheers🥃
Booker's light, really like it!
I enjoyed this too. Cheers!

Thank you for your review. Really like your review format. Subscribed!
Thank you, and welcome to the channel! I hope we can continue to talk whiskey from time to time! Cheers!
I always have wild turkey in the bar. It is my budget favorite. Old Tub has quickly become the new contender. It is a very good whiskey for the price.
I would gladly relax with a dram of either. Cheera!

Love Old Tub! Easy drinker! Solid A! Not as big a fan of the WT! I like sweet over spicy! Cheer's
Awesome! Thanks for sharing your style!
Thanks I'll check it out, Jim Beam Double Oak is worth same time. The Wild Turkey is a favorite.
Will do! Thanks, cheers.

Just in time, drinking WT 101 at the moment. Never heard before about Old Tub, sounds worth to try. Cheers!

Thanks. It is a little sweet, and for me, after about a week, heavy on the peanut note. Still, I clearly enjoy it! Cheers!
There is a crazy amount of peanut on this on both this nose and palate. I don’t know how someone could NOT pick it up!
Whiskey can remind people of different things. I certainly get lots of honey roasted peanuts here. Especially after the bottle was open a few weeks.
How does it compare to Knob Creek in your opinion ?! Similar ?
Similar, but I still prefer Knob Creek. A little more fruit and oak in KC.

Peanut land…. 😂😂
Yep!
Don't get Old Tub in the UK but always get peanut in Jim Beam white label.
For me, this is easily twice the peanut power in White label. Not sure why, but it sure comes up for me!

There is a little bitterness here. Not a ton, likely would not put you off, but I can taste it. Good catch.
