Another article said these workers got medical and dental coverage, plus, they were earning over $20/hr. with their tips. For serving coffee, $40, 800 a year + medical and dental benefits ain't bad.

You might be shocked to know what the Federal minimum wage is here in Australia, guess what it is?
It’s $23.23 p/h, will increase on 1 July to $24.10 p/h (or $915.80 for a full time 38hr week), just to repeat, this is the MINIMUM hourly rate.
Plus we don’t have to tip, we don’t have to make up what an employer should fairly pay their workers.
Also in Australia every full time worker is entitled, by Federal law, to 20 days (4wks) paid annual leave, 10 days (2wks) paid sick leave and 10 days (2wks) paid public holiday leave, again, minimum by law.
The US Federal government does not mandate a single day of paid annual, sick or public holiday leave, all left to the employer (if you’re lucky).
Mericans talk about ‘benefits’ from their employer, we don’t talk about benefits, we have ‘rights’, guaranteed rights.

It was for high schoolers and elders who wanted extra pay while going to school or retired. If they want more pay go build a skill that requires more than cooking a meal at your house.

So, CA (I assume that’s California? Remember I’m in Australia, I don’t have a clue of what US state abbreviations are, ours are: NSW, QLD, VIC, TAS, WA, SA and NT).
Anyway, you say they increased the Min wage in CA to $20 p/h and business shut up shop, yes?
Guess what the current unemployment rate is in the US? It’s 4%. Guess what the current unemployment rate is in Australia? Yes you guessed it, it’s also 4%.
So how come businesses survive well in Australia when we have a high Min wage then? Higher Min wages don’t determine how a good (or bad) a business is operated.
One thing I find interesting is there is a big ‘us v them’ attitude in the USA, it’s all about ‘me’, me, me, me, very much dog eat dog.
In Australia (and most of the world), yes it’s ‘me’ first, but we also have a ‘community’ attitude, if we all do well, it’s good for all of us, never know when you might end up at the bottom, yes?
Another big difference between USA and Australia (and again most of the rest of the world), is Universal Health care.
USA, no universal health care, either workers pay all their health insurance costs or the employer contributes, or pays, or pays nothing.
In Australia health insurance is not a burden on employers. We pay a 2% Medicare levy on our ‘taxable’ income to the Federal Government.
If I earn $100k and my ‘taxable’ income is $80k, I pay $1600 (or $34.60 p/w) per annum to the Federal Government for my universal health care (yes we can have private insurance if we want, but it makes no difference to life or death health care situations).
If go to hospital,say a heart attack, regardless of if it’s for five hours, five days or five weeks, the bill I receive is $0, yes that’s correct, $0.
No excess, no contribution, no co-pay, I pay ZERO, nobody goes bankrupt over medical bills in Australia.
Life expectancy is approx 6 years more in Australia than the USA.
We have a healthier society, people aren’t scared to go to the Dr, we have cheap pharmaceuticals too (Government regulates the price), healthier people contribute more.
Yes we are a free market capitalist economy (same as the USA), but we also have a social conscious with a safety net that doesn’t leave people at the bottom being treated like crap.

I recently bought a coffee maker that will do essentially everything these people can do. It was pricey but it doesn't call out sick, show up high, dress like a homeless bum, treat me like an inconvenience or show support for far left causes. All it does is make great coffee. Maybe if these weirdos considered that, they might have a little more sense.

Facing an increase in cost of doing business when the profit margin is marginal or zero usually precipitates some kind of major decision. Operating a business at a loss can only go on for so long. While there is pain and turmoil in each case overall it's the business process, it's old as civilization.

Plus, the folks doing this are acting like being a coffee shop barista is a real career path. That is an absurdity on its face. That job, along with pumping gas or bussing tables and other jobs like those are entry level jobs. Only the workers promoted OUT of those positions get more money. It has been this way for a long time (I was a teenager in the 1970s and it was most certainly true then.. and MUCH before that).

That is actually going to be the new reality for many low skill workers. You are only worth what the illegal alien standing behind you is willing to work for. If businesses are as greedy as the SJWs claim they are, the first thing they will do is hire the lowest wage workers possible.

My son worked some min wage fast food jobs when he was young. Then he took an opportunity at sales that required no experience. He took that experience to the next level. Worked retail sales for a few years. Now here us an account manager for a high end furniture manufacturer doing B2B sales and earning 5x the base he had before with great benefits and career growth opportunities.
No college degree.
Minimum wage service jobs are entry level and are only "careers" for those with zero ambition and expect govt or someone else to force raises.
Take ownership of your path. You make your own destiny.
That takes drive and determination though, these people have none of that. They want all the benifits with none of the effort!!!

A union leader is the equivalent of a pastor at a church - a superfluous middle man that is a financial drain on their clients.
Other employers in the area need to note who these individuals are and not hire them.
