DC. if you feel the need to get away. Philly has great restaurants, many of which are ethnic. The art and history museums are fantastic. It is also a City of great Architecture which ranges from 18th century through modern. Another thing I love about Philly, is that William Penn referred to it as "a green country town", and as a result, the City was designed from the beginning with parks large and small incorporated into its' urban design. It is a very pleasant walking and biking City and a very good place to visit and live.

TBH, I was worried as I had read about the crime rate but all that was gone on after the first day there. What a beautiful, beautiful city. We were out every day and night and felt safe throughout. The buildings are out of this world, the areas with the terraced town houses reminded us of the UK as did the streets with the small shops. We had breakfast everyday in the Reading Terminal Market and then headed out to explore. Everyone was so friendly and polite. Furthest we got was King Of Prussia Mall via a bus. Also, William Penn was from England, so when he planned out the city he definitely used his European influences. Case in point, Broad street was intentialy built wide like that just in case if a fire broke out, it wouldn't skip to other parts of the city too fast, this was something a lot of European cities would do.

    • @Clavdiachauchat
      @Clavdiachauchat 3 года назад +9

      Penn insisted on the grid pattern partly because he had witnessed the devastation of the Great Fire of London in 1666, and partly because he thought streets with long sight lines would prevent immoral behavior. He thought the narrow, winding alleys of London encouraged both fire and vice. In planning his new city, he actually was trying to move away from most urban environments found in Europe or colonial America at the time. He was picturing a “green country town” in opposition to what he saw as the sordid medieval tinderboxes of Europe.

    • @MichaelRubillo
      @MichaelRubillo 3 года назад +1

      @@um1446 segregation had absolutely nothing to do with how the 158 neighborhoods were originated. Since then however it is true different cultural groups have congregated together in areas. For instance the South East Philadelphia is still primarily Italian, Chinatown in the center of town, etc. Areas have even changed over time. North East Philly used to be primarily Irish immigrants but over the years has changed to have more of a Russian influence. Mount Airy and Germantown areas used to be mostly Jewish and has more of an African culture today. I think it is only natural for cultural group to congregate together and can be seen in many areas, not only Philadelphia. A good example would be the Central Jersey area with a large population of people from India moving in.

    Gotta love Jim’s! Haven’t been there in years, but it’s a great spot. Philly always gets trash talked, but it’s such a beautiful city, with a long history and beautiful heritage. I’ve lived the majority of my life in south jersey, but I was born in NE Philly and my grandparents bought the house I was born at when my parents moved us to New Jersey. All my family still lives in Philadelphia except my immediate. Proud to be from there and it’s great to see you enjoying everything it has to offer.

    Born and raised in Philly, still live here. I love center city, but it's a different world from the surrounding neighborhoods. I'm not saying the rest is bad, not at all. Some areas are super cool in their own right.
    Downtown (yes, I also use that term) is such a treasure. I still walk around their like a tourist admiring the buildings. City Hall took a hundred years to build and is the largest free standing building in the world. The detail is amazing.
    Philly is a completely walkable city. I took my out of town cousin on a walking tour that she still talks about many years later. Started at the Art Museum, down through center city and over to South Philly, eating and drinking along the way.

The funny thing is most natives know we can always tell who the visitors to the city are they are always taking pictures of our wonderful architecture in awe. All in all the buildings are just beautiful. You mentioned Chicago I gotta get there to visit, but I will wait for the warmer weather post COVID.

      Also, the Schuykill River Trail has stunningly beautiful views of the city and if you take the trail away from downtown (parallel to Kelly Drive) you'll get to Manayunk, another charming neighborhood.
