The Very Rare GTX 780 Ti Lightning Revisited - Can This Old Beast Still Game in 2020?

- A couple of years ago I bought a very rare MSI GTX 780 Ti. One of just 12 samples, this lightning edition card was an eBay find, though I quickly discovered it had a problem.
After re-discovering it in a box hidden away in the cupboard I decided to see why exactly it stopped working, only to be surprised by what I found...

"Please just work" settings should be a new standard, something that goes below Low.
Yes please
it wouldn't cost much for game studios to implement such settings, and minimum requirement of weaker GPU would surely make a bit more people buy the game, but for whatever reason no one is doing that
guess game studios don't want their games available to everybody, most of them are probably busy making new skins for another season pass

I wonder how the RTX cards will perform in a few years time
If DLSS becomes more popular, they will hold up better then the 10 and 16 series. Same goes with raytracing support.
first gen wont be that good but the ampere cards will be significantlyy better. I think dlss will be like a godsend if it becomes really popular. plus remember this is 7 years old now so its really not that bad
Considering NVIDIA has already stated that we shouldn't expect Turing to age very well...
@@TheBig451 I'm glad that they gave that statement, but that could mean they will gimp it like always
Considering the reliability of them, I doubt many will be around in the years forthcoming. A friend and I have had 5 RTX cards with VRAM issues between us.

If you have an R9 290 or 290x, re-test it too. Those cards from the same era seem to have aged far better.
AMD FineWine Technology, I have Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 with OC, was 270 euro new, GTX 970 was 400 euro or bit more, GTX 980 was 600 euro. The R9 290 currently reaches GTX 980 performance. 10 degrees C hotter though / probably less efficient.
They run extremely well if you don't hit the vram limit (there's an 8gb r9 290x, rare though) it's pretty much a slightly slower rx 580 4gb in terms of gaming performance.. It obviously runs hotter and uses much more power though. But.. If you bought the card in 2013/2014 for £300 you should still be extremely satisfied considering how great it still runs in 2020
@@MrEditsCinema I think the fact that the current gen consoles also run on GCN 2.0 helps. AMD basically has every reason to keep up driver updates while NVidia has essentially ditched Kepler.
Mortimer Zabi very insightful, I would have never thought of this myself, you're probably 100% right!
@@cosminmilitaru9920 GTX 970 launch price was 350$/€, I bougth It in october 2014, not 400 or more, and 270€ for a new Sapphire Tri-X R9 290??? When??? launch price was 449$

Proud to say I was already watching this channel when that original video came out ;)
"Please Just Work" Settings is basically what I always do in all gamed for me to play on my old acer laptop from 2013 😂
Another great video. I love the story with this card
i love your content, i was waiting for this so bad.
In 2015 I bought a Zotac GTX 780 Ti AMP edition, which was sold already overclocked and with better cooling. Absolutely phenomenal card, died over a year ago so replaced it with a 1080 Ti which was obviously an improvement but not as much as you'd think. A card sold in 2013 it still got me 240+ fps in Overwatch and could play any game (up to 2018) to 60fps at medium to max settings. No stability problems either!
It's been a while I subbed to RGiHD. I think back when there were around 10k subs. GreenHamGaming and RgIHD are my go to tech channels to relax haha.
Thanks for the 4 minutes of exposition when you said right from the start you would link it's history and performance in your first video in the description.
Great video! Keep it up
I'd love to see how it compares to AMD cards of the same age like R9 290x, see how FineWine works
I've heard it basically demolished many Nvidia offerings, even newer high end cards
Dude, my R9 290 with OC has 10 degrees C more but same performance as GTX 980, mine Sapphire Tri-X and other one is MSI Gaming series. Both have the equivallent performance of GTX 1060 / RX 570 but consume more. And my card costed 270 euro instead of 400+ like an GTX 970 that I drooled for at the time.
@@cosminmilitaru9920 That's exactly my point, it's such a beast! Only downside is the power consumption. Btw, locally a 290 costs the equivalent of 60€ rn, saw an r9 fury the other day for a 100...shits crazy
@@miroslavdenic4561 yea they are so cheap but loads of power usage. a better alternative nowadays is one of the rx cards e.g rx580 but the r9 cards are still amazing lol
@@TheDarkness344 I feel you brother, but used Rx cart are priced very steep here, I mean you might as well buy new.
Side note, saw a 590 FATBOY on sale for less than 200€
Not that's a bargain!
My 290X Lightning can do 90-100 FPS in 2016 Doom using Vulkan (I know, favors AMD cards) max settings or slightly reduced. Dirt 2 over 60fps all the time. Deus Ex Mankind Divided can stay above 60fps on high-ish settings. Far Cry 5 Ultra preset benchmark result (without HD textures because of 4GB memory) max 69fps avg 57fps min 50fps. It has aged incredibly well.
Still so cool that you have one of these

RX 570: enters the chat
AMD FineWine Technology. Currently rocking Sapphire Tri-X R9 290 with OC, almost on par with GTX 980 but was half it's price, even GTX 970 was way more expensive than this one, and is on par with RX 570. :D
@@cosminmilitaru9920 great for FHD 60
facts, can't wait to get rid of my 570 for a 1660 super, sounds like a bloody jet engine too and runs at 85% on full load
470 is basically the same
Wait I have a 570, can someone explain what were talking about
I have a GTX 980Ti Lightning and I just love how it looks. Today I went on the second hand market in South Africa and saw a GTX 780 Lightning for sale. I immediately contacted the seller and bought it. I just want a massive collection of all the lightning cards that were manufactured. 2 down, 13 more to go. :)
One of my GPUs fixed itself. My Vega 56 "died" last November. No video, no fans spinning, nothing. I purchased a 1660TI to replace it and, on a whim, just tossed it into another rig. The thing fired up, better than ever. I was completely caught off guard, to say the least.
Cool vid! Hold on to that for a bit.
6:02......... waiting for it
That yellow fan looks awesome.
My GTX 770 lasted a few years, never a glitch just solid performance all the way. Replaced it with a GTX980 which is still going strong with my i5 2500K @4.3.
I m still gaming with mine since I built my PC back in 2013.
@@steliosk97 Absolute barn-stormer. I sometimes wish I still had mine to force me to tweak for results, always a good challenge.
@@carlosfandango2419 Well I have the 4Gb OC version of Gigabyte. It tried today to Overclock it a bit first time just to squish a bit more juice out of her but I failed. At least the games I play now are playing respectable Cod MW normal low 45-60fps and FH4 medium high around 60 70. A friend of mine has a 1050ti and it's on par with mine in Quality/fps. So I guess I m fine for now.
I have a 980 as well, it’s not my main system though.

Still use a 780ti in my gaming rig today. My Gigabyte quit a few weeks ago but I had an EVGA which is now in there and still works and works well
1 day feels like years when you dont upload
I have a gtx 770 to this day and it runs warm but performance is great for its ages
the problem with doom is that Kepler card don't support Vulkan correctly. a gtx 970 will get you over 60 fps on high settings
These cards always hit right in the nostalgia.
I recently just had a 780 lightning die on me. Would you be interested in the spare gpu reactor I have? It should be the same for the Ti I think.
BagsOfFun96 probably that would fix the weird framerates he got with his benchmarks, they were way too low
yo if u want to sell it i could buy it
@@twiittter Way too low? The card was pegged at 98/99% in a lot of the games, where would it get that many more frames from?
Buildzoid may take the Dead card from you, contact him
@@twiittter i agree with doom , framerate was weirdly low for a nice optimized game.
are you growing a mustache? Welcome to the club! :)
Nice video. This GPU is still pretty decent. Are you planning on getting more rare cards?
The crashing whenever you try to change clock speed may be due to a modified VBios. With such an exotic card I imagine the previous owner may have tried their hand at softmodding voltages or clock profiles. If those are misconfigured, software changes can fail.
Fixable by reflashing an unmodified Lightning bios, but that may be difficult to find.
Still, you could compare a stock 780Ti vbios and the vbios on your card with the KeplerBiosEditor.
3gb 7970 does 50 fps in Doom 1080p. Wtf is happening with this kepler cards?
No support for them anymore, but it Should Still give a decent experience in most games.
(Also the little amount of Vram is probably an issue to some games).
Apparently all these years you have never heard of AMD's FineWine Technology. Enjoy it mate. Your HD 7970 was way cheaper than the GTX 780, hell cheaper even than GTX 770, and since years ago beats the crap out of them. My R9 290 was cheaper than GTX 970, now beats it and with OC is close to GTX 980 levels and equivallent to GTX 1060 3 GB which is the most popular gaming card on steam users.
AMDs drivers improved over time while Nvidias didn't really improve old cards. Also Doom runs really good on AMD cards.
That was just an retoric question :D but thanks for all the answers. Its a shame that an almighty beast like the 780ti gets cut down by its drivers in such a way
Kepler has very poor DX12/Vulkan functionality. Doom runs OpenGL or Vulkan.
My 290x is still performing great. I'm getting a locked 60fps in Doom Eternal. Had the card over 5 years now. Still kicking ass in new games! That was a really good purchase.
Yeah it sure was, it's essentially just a slightly slower rx 480/580 4gb and we all know how great those cards run at 1080p. Kinda funny.. The 780 ti back in 2013/14.. Looking at the cards now the r9 290x absolutely destroys it lol
Just got a brand new FE edition for $160 from this guy named Dave. What a wonderful man. He wrote a letter basically saying enjoy the card. I'm so happy and I got it for my girlfriends dad as a gift. It plays The Forest in 4k ultra settings just fine and RDR2 in 1080p like a g!
You are insanely lucky to own one of them 😍
The 780 ti was the last card to get Windows XP driver support, you should revisit this on a Windows XP system, this is pretty much the best possible card to run Windows XP games. Would honestly be a shame if you didn't give this beast a run in its natural habitat.
2:54 lol, subtle 😂
Would you do a recommended spec game test with 7 Days to Die? Thanks
Love your vids love when old tech get puts agains new games :D
Even if is relegated to museum display, having one of the 12 of those should be total joy
Bought one awhile back for $80..I needed something with a pretty high Cuda core count (for CAD/3D art work and renderings)..that could also handle some decent gaming from time to time..(Warzone).. for performance and price, it's probably the best card I've had so far..I plan on getting another to run SLI set up..
I'm running my OC'd GTX 660 Twin Frozr 3.
Still treats me well even after all these years
On your next card please choose again a good sample one. Msi Twin Frozr were good quality built. Msi Radeon cards for example not so much, there Sapphire's best.
I'm Running on the 660 TI OC2, it can indeed still do certain things.. just not very efficiently and the 2 gigs of V Ram are a nightmare to work with.
@@VertexDon hey Don, have you flashed your card with the Bios that allows voltage configuration. I got a serious performance bump after changing mine and upping the boost clock, and honestly it was quite fun. There's a few vids on RUclips, search for your card + voltage unlock...
@@chadster225 the card is already the 2nd generation of "somebody overclocked the crap out of it" and I would not like to figure out by how much it's little remaining lifespan would drop if I clock it any further, would certainly be a fun experience, probably not last long though.
@@VertexDon Very sensible of you. I don't really game anymore so I had no reason to do it other than the thrill of overclocking. I did manage to get Sekiro to a semi solid 60fps which I'm quite proud of. My CPU was the bottleneck from then on unfortunately... And I can't squeeze anything more out of that old stallion.
Just saying, I love your videos
I think the amount of vram is what is really holding it behind. I'm still using an old EVGA gtx 770 FTW which has 4gb of vram and it's holding up surprisingly well. Paired with a i7 3770k and 16 gb of DDR3, I'm still able to play games such as Doom 2016 and Battlefield 1 on medium to high settings.
Bryan from Tech Yes City had one a few months ago.. thats another of the 12
Have you checked if the bios on the card is the correct one? It might have a different bios on it since it was sent out to overclockers....
Love the content.
This video made me realize that I've already been following this channel for years 😂
The Titan was awesome because it came out months ahead of the 780 Ti and it had the 6 GB VRAM. Which was awesome for 3D Surround. I had two Titans. They were also beastly over clickers, I had both of mine at 1425 MHz on the core. Which is crazy for a 1st gen Titan, of course they were liquid cooled. They actually outperformed SLI GTX 980s in games where VRAM was a limitation.
i am using the 780 Ti since launch and it still plays all games at 1080p without problems.
That was a very good choice
2:30 welcome to the bottom of his to do list
I've still got one (reference design) , and with an overclock to 1175mhz it can gain a good 20% in performance, with my new ryzen 3600 it works great for the few games I play when I get around to it, like the new halo Mcc on PC
That's a good oc gain. The new halos have been pretty lightweight though no?
@@armando1is1great yeah lol, the gtx 979 can run it at 4k 60fps
Yeah I've been able to run at a locked framerate up scaled 4k 76hz, so they obviously aren't too demanding
Here's an interesting video series concept for you since you're getting pretty big on youtube: Make a series of maxing out all platforms/sockets, for example: "the best LGA 775 pc" or "LGA 1156 maxed out" getting the best processors for reasonable prices (for example on AliExpress) or instead of maxing out you can do a best value build.
Not very relevant lol:
I recently got a $30 set of parts including a Asus P7P55D EVO motherboard, a i5 750 CPU, stock cooler and 16GB RAM.
Sold the i5 for $25 and got a Xeon X3440 on AliExpress for $10, got a snowman T6 cooler with 2 fans for $20 and overclocked it from 2,53 to 3,8GHz (4,2 is possible but it will throttle with this cooler).
Got a nice looking case for $10, some ugreen Sata cables for $2 a piece, a $25 PSU (coolermaster MWE bronze 550W, good as new), a new Kingston A400 240GB SSD for $30 and a 2TB HDD for $30 (good as new), to top it all off I got a $25 GTX 760 (looking to upgrade to a 780(ti), R9 290(X) or GTX 970.
I have a $159 pc that serves me well for now and just the fact that the value for money is so great makes me happy about it.
My brother build a $600 pc with a Ryzen 7 2700 from AliExpress ($130) and a GTX 1070Ti and it's tempting but not worth the upgrade for now. In a year or so I think the Ryzen 7 3700x might be about $140 on AliExpress, I might make the jump then.
Re test the 290x if you have one
Will be interesting to see how it does vs latest cards
Do you think that maybe the overclocking issues might stem from the missing overclocking board on the back of the card?
about a week ago i bought a 780 Lightning because of your 780 ti video. 👍
And how do you like it? Or just as a collectors thing?
Honestly it's great!
I originally bought it just as a collecters item, because i usually run a 2080 super in my system but i've been using it for the past week now and it runs most games i play just fine at decent settings.

I'm still gaming with a 760 Ti. Still very usable since I only play Overwatch and other older / less graphic intensive titles on my PC.
I was using my 780ti up until I got my 1080ti FE. My issue was running out of VRAM even at 1080p with newer games but still getting at least 60fps. The 780ti is till a beast of a GPU. Fully unlocked GK110 is stupid fast.

May i ask if it's still enough power to play All triple A titles of 2020 thru 2021 (regardless whatever lowest setting /resolutions, long as it's playable)?
My wife still uses a 780ti and it even runs Cyberpunk 2077 pretty well on low - medium :)

Funny thing is I have a 780 classified by evga and it works great especially after I upgraded my pc with a newer cpu and it runs all my games in ultra in 1080p and it’s saving me money but I sadly have to start looking for an upgrade to run the new destroy all humans but until then I’ll still use my 780
You should test minesweeper as it is a very demanding and even the 2080ti struggles at medium
Never fail to surprise me with hardware that I never knew existed, How hard it is to find this stuff ?
next to impossible only 12 samples of this gpu are made in the entire world.
what program are you using for the frame rate counter? I don't think I've seen that before
It's still MSI Afterburner (Rivatuner Statistics) but he changed the colors and position.
