    I've had a lot of headsets and currently use the Varjo Aero. I still have my G2 however and just cannot part with it, great headset and completely agree its the ideal middle ground from a budget perspective. Hopefully someone will come in a fill that space but it will take a lot to replace the G2 for the price point.

    That's really a big bummer. Was really hoping for something like a 2880x2880 per eye Reverb G3 with pancake lenses for around 600€ to be coming at the end of the year. Especially for PC VR there isn't really a good and affordable solution on the horizon. Everything is ether standalone and cheap and only to run on the PC with huge compromises or it's just too expensive and the niche of an already niche market.

    • @soziologeek3340
      @soziologeek3340 Год назад

      @@totheknee hm the crystal is a small series headset, pimax doesn't have the capacity to produce their headsets in huge numbers and that's why they're so expensive to cover the development costs. I mean pimax doesn't even have a proper international distribution. If one of the bigger players on the market would want to produce such a headset for under 1000€ I bet they could. The thing is they don't want to because the market is too small for the profit margin of such a headset and for example meta might not even be able with the current mobile hardware to power such a device as a standalone headset and standalone is everything meta is interested in for the consumer market. That's why it's such a bummer that HP is out of the VR market because they were nearly the only really big player that cared about PC VR mainstream. All the other players in the market (even valve) target either the enthusiasts or the standalone casual market.

  • @ChrisM541
    @ChrisM541 Год назад +19

    Damn, this is a shock if true. The G2 occupied it's own very significant slot, using an extremely competitive price while delivering a visual experience very close to headsets costing 4x as much. There was a lot of headroom around that price point - there really was nothing of similar quality competing with it on cost. Of course, it's a business though, and if sales of those crucial (VR-advancing) next gen GPU's from AMD and Nvidia have been low, coupled with MS laying off the entire mixed reality team, and today's rising cost of living shock, then it's probably not really a surprise. Does SteamVR still require WMR, or can Valve not write any necessary additional code themselves?

  • @MichaelMoellerTRLInc
    @MichaelMoellerTRLInc Год назад +32

    And this just sums up HP as a company. At this years CES VR was everywhere and there are some amazing headsets and peripherals incoming. HP get's in early when the tech is new and expensive with little content and now that the sector is starting to mature and loads of content are coming and there's likely to be a much deeper market penetration HP decides it's time to exit.

    I kept my G2 for 2 years as it took me a very long time to take my rose coloured glasses off. The only advantage was the high resolution but they squandered it with such a tiny sweetspot (even with my eyes up to the lenses) plus the tracking, controllers and WMR were terrible. There were so many basic oversights such as the position of the trackers which they eventually fixed in V2, but the fact they missed something so obvious speaks volumes of their competence. HP had so many issues right from launch, it was very unprofessional, we only give them so much credit because they gave us uncompressed high res for a decent price when no one else does. They came so close but they dropped the ball and never made any effort after V2.

  • @buzzow
    @buzzow Год назад +7

    Damn. Really sad news. Many of us G2 users were hoping for a G3 and as you mentioned it didn't require much to make the improvement: just non-fresnel lenses to expand the sweetspot, even a wider fov wasn't really necessary upgrading the current edge to edge clarity. It will be hard find a better headset with all the G2 nice features (including integrated high quality mic and audio), maybe Pimax 12k or something similar, but as you said that's a bye bye middle budget segment: it seems quite similar to electric cars right now, you may find practical low powered ones, or insane torque monster hypercars, but no affordable sport oriented electric cars. Well, let's see if anyone tries a pancake lenses mod for G2 xD

    You are absolutely right about the industry needing that middle ground. All of the players in that space have slowly fallen away. For whatever reason, it mustn’t seem to be very lucrative to them in the long term. The G2 is my first VR headset, as I’m sure it is for many others, for the fact that it is a great middle ground.
    Hopefully, as the industry continues to mature, development will become cheaper and easier and someone can eventually move back into that space. Depending on how the Bigscreen Beyond lands, I could see them moving into that space since they seem willing to innovate and perhaps take more risks than the major manufacturers are willing to do.

I guess the current macro economics just don't allow them to do that anymore so they probably feel its not worth the R&D time to compete with the Varjo and PIMAX hi end markets.

    Not surprised. The problem is that even half decent VR is VERY EXPENSIVE. It requires a lot of preparation and troubleshooting, and to the average person a complete pain to setup and successfully use. You can throw money at it but by the time you've bought a top end computer, outrageously expensive GPU, then the headset you've spent a small fortune. The vast majority of VR flight simmers use VR for sightseeing and not for more complex flying. The only VR that is going to work for the masses is 3D moving images popping out of your laptop or computer monitor with any other devices needed and that is already beginning to be possible. The fact is that current VR image quality is NOWHERE near good enough yet and unless you spend a fortune is extremely poor.

    A real shame to hear this, but as I mentioned in your other video, I’m not at all surprised.
    PSVR2 has raised the bar in the midrange VR pricing although it’s not a pc headset.
    For HP to continue at this price point it would need to add extra technology that would not be cheap.
    Another HP headset would need to compete with up and coming PC VR hardware and imo just the addition of pancake lenses is not enough.
    My money and focus is still on valve. If the index had better optics at the time I would of went for that. Happy with my G2, after I got over the small sweet spot. It’s been a bargain for what it offers with audio and visual, but beyond that it’s a pretty stagnant product especially on the WMR side which has been a massive disappointment.

    I'm very dispassionate about VR in general, but have always been curious about it for (combat) flight sim wanting to go in that direction aside from substantial problems with how I play it. I was decidedly on the TrackIR+flatscreen+panels/accessories side of the fence until I discovered PointCTRL. With PointCTRL, there isn't an imbalance in the trade off of improved visual immersions while reduced immersion using cockpit avionics in DCS. This is either peeking or feeling around physical devices you can't see in VR, or using a pointing or hand/finger tracking device that is quite inaccurate and cumbersome to use.
    Overall the problem with the VR headset market is this though: I don't care at all about stand alone features, or even VR controllers. The Aero is stupidly expensive, and still requires not cheap base stations to track. I know the Aero is a visual experience that meets the bar, but that's a lot extra to pay just for entry. With other headsets, I'm not so sure so the visuals will work so anything at a very high (over $500) price point is a problem because why would you spent in that range if you were unsure you were getting something you want? This is where the HP Reverb G2 has been the only other option I've eyeballed. At that price point, and generally people saying it is visually clear or good enough for DCS, I'm willing to get my feet wet with it. That price point is also final because the G2 has inside out tracking, which may not be perfect but from reviews, seems very solid.

    That news saddened even me despite never having owned the G2. I wanted to get one, but I wasn't going to pay 700 Euros for it, looking at US deals at half that price. Now it's gone. I guess I'll stick to my Tobii tracker until something replaces it as I'm not paying bags of money for the Varjo that doesn't even include controllers and is useless for any other use than "cockpit-sims".
    Or if nothing else replaces the G2, I might be forced to buy a Pimax Crystal if I decide I really, really want to switch to VR again. Haven't used one since I bought my Oculus Rift at launch and sold it a few weeks later because of the terrible resolution back then.

    Oh, no! I've only just purchased a Reverb G2 V2!
    I'm loving it so far. I need to do more testing, but in IL-2 Great Battles, the resolution is amazing when compared to my old HTC Vive Pro 1.
    This is terrible news for us 'G2' owners that were waiting for an update from HP!
    Like you, I was hoping they would announce a new version with better lenses. I think the resolution is the right balance for performance on current high end PC's. Except for the narrow field of view. But I just pretend I have a racing helmet on or a flight helmet or goggles (depending on the simulation) and that is what is blocking my horizontal side view.
    Maybe a third party will be able to make better lenses for the Reverb G2 V2? And maybe their will be a way to bypass Windows Mixed Reality? This HMD is just too popular for it to die. Especially in DCS. Eagle Dynamics really needs to pull their finger out of 'you know where!' CPU optimization is extremely important to get below a frame time of 11ms of latency, if you want 90Hz.
    I am hoping some flight sim entrepreneurs will come out with something. Like they did with the Spitfire spade flight stick. I think the same guys also made a Spitfire Chassis control lever. Which was the reason for the spade grip in the Spitfire in the first place. Controlling the plane with either hand.

    Four years into the G1, decided to skip the G2. Mostly because of WMR, too many layers of software frameworks to deal with. So I'm looking to the future, maybe in 4-5 years the technology has really matured, along with GPU-tech. GPU tech is totally backwards right now, with the brick-sized heat ovens they call GPU's....so I'll hold out a while longer for the (hopefully) matured stuff 😀

Huge, as in size and power consumption, not capacity. Or those "mobile" phone bricks in the 80's. 20 years later we have small chips on NVME SSD's containing terabytes of data, with high speed bandwidth and very little power consumption. Look at ARM processors, like the ones Apple use, that's CPU evolution right there. Unless the GPU tech evolves, we'll end up with two computer cases, one for the main components and another for just the GPU. Regular people won't be able to afford the power bill. Sounds backwards to me. YMMV :)
