as someone who also switched from G2 to Pico4, I think the one thing you failed to mention about the Pico is the battery. Nice review and very timely. I had the chance to try the Pico 4 at Westfields in London yesterday but only using Superhot so a very limited demo. For me the FoV is noticabley bigger even if you use the VRCovers thin padding. The clarity is also there throughout the headset even in a title like Superhot. Unfortunately for me it then falls apart a little. This standalone game resolution clearly wasn't the full 2160 x 2160 and the brightness was really low, I can't be sure if it was purposely turned down. The controller felt cheap even compared to the G2 controllers, tracking was great though and the audio was ok. The biggest issue though was the comfort, I think it was lighter than the G2 but the facial padding is awful, didn't fit my face at all. I'll be giving the Pico 4 a miss for now until I can test it properly with a better alternative facial padding as I've clearly not seen it in it's best light.

I agree with you about the sweet spot on my G2 V2 is too small and is very noticeable when I do SIM Racing. I always seem to go back to my Rift S which has a larger sweet spot even though the Resolution is not as great as the G2. As you said, with the HP Reverb I always have to turn my head for best clarity.
Note: Too bad for us G2 users that HP has decided not to make any more VR headsets or upgrades. Was told this on another RUclips channel. They said HP might support existing headsets till 2026, but not sure about the support.
I am sill holding off on getting into wireless VR so I don't have a Pico 4. I think they are still not sold in the US, so until they do, I am not even thinking about this headset. I prefer to buy things locally in the US than the hassle of going through international sales.

So, what do we get from this video, folks ?
You need a Pico 4, a 4080 or 4090 GPU, and (something that was not mentioned in the video) a router that is capable of god mode with Virtual Desktop - so, thats another £100+ JUST to get anywhere near a G2's quality.
    Pico 4 128Mb - £379 - current Amazon prices.
    RTX 4080 - £1200 for FE, or £1250 MINIMUM for a vendor 4080. Or - RTX 4090 - £1600 for a FE (If you can find one, lol) or £1800+ for a vendor 4090.
    Asus RT-AX55 Wi-Fi 6 AX1800 - often recommended for wireless VR + Virtual Desktop - £100.
    So,
    £2080 IF you can get a FE 4090. Or, £2280 for a vendor 4090.
    £1679 for a 4080 FE, Router, Pico 4.
Now, current UK prices for a G2 are still stupidly high at £682 (I only paid £579 for my Version 1 G2). But, you can use it straight away if you have at least a 2080/Ti, 30 Series cards.
Now, I actually like the Pico 4, and we desperately need more competitors in the VR hardware market. But, IF you need that amount of GPU power just to get NEAR a G2, then that is a massive let-down. Obviously, if you already own a 4080/4090, and a capable Router, then you're good to go.

I just tried my Pico 4 with MSFS and DCS today, to see how it compares to my old trusted G2 (1st release). And... mind blown... 😯 Yes, you are right, the picture in the sweet spot is not as sharp as in the G2, but it is only slightly worse and the overall picture clarity in the P4 is way more important than that! Yeah, I have 4090/i9 13900K combo, so I have enough power for the god mode in the VD. Now what to do with G2?... Keep it or try to sell it?... I'll probably keep it, but mostly as a spare.
EDIT: I noticed some additional advantages of the Pico 4 over the G2 (at least my early version G2). First is better tracking, particularly in low light conditions (Pico has IR sensitive cameras, unlike G2 ones, which only work in visible light). Particularly when I look down at side consoles in DCS cockpits, the G2 often tracks very poorly, while P4 has no issues there. The other thing is that Pico 4 is much less fiddly. It just works. With G2 I often have problems as it either starts without sound (it is detected as an USB audio device, but there is no sound from speakers) or is not detected at all... Sometimes I have to reboot my computer and restart the G2 a couple of times before it starts working as intended. I'm sure it is just my early G2 and others probably don't exhibit such problems, but for me Pico is much less effortless to just connect and use!
Oh, and one more thing! THE FAN!!! It is absolutely fantastic thing to have in the headset! Often my G2 becomes usable only after 10 minutes of use or so, because before that, the difference in temeperature of my face and the lens causes ugly fogging, that only disappears once the temperatures equalize. No such issue with Pico 4 - the fan takes care of that 🤓
One thing to remember with Pico 4 is that the battery only lasts for about 2hrs, so not much for flying, and after that you lose the wireless experience, as you need to connect USB-C charging cable. But the cable is still thinner and more flexible than the G2 cable, so no reason to complain there 🙂
BTW, I use WiFi 5 router, so no need for WiFi 6 to get a great experience!

If this thing truly needs a 40-series, and more to the point, a 4090, then they aren't going to sell very many. From what I have been able to gather, even though they're not facing the same supply chain headwinds that we all dealt with in the whole 30-series debacle, I'm quite certain that many, like me, who managed to get a 3000 series of ANY kind in the past 6-12 months isn't going to upgrade for years (except perhaps for those few for whom $1,500 is pocket change), and many others are just balking at the price regardless.

"Global resolution at 150%, in Sim: Resolution 120%" - You should probably not do image scaling in two different places... just do it once somewhere instead - would get better image quality and faster framerate I'd say.

I own the Quest Pro, the Clarity is insane.
I had the Pico 4 on launch but returned it due to some issues it had, warping, audio etc.
Also owned the G2 v1, but Quest Pro is on another level with with panels and the best lenses on the market currently.
Biggest misconception regarding resolution with the Quest Pro having less pixels than the Q2 is not correct, and why going by a spec sheet is something you shouldn't be comparing.
Why? - Due to Quest Pro using two panels vs one on the Quest 2, the lens stack moves with the lenses on the Pro, this gives much more visible/usable pixels resulting in higher pixels per degree, resulting in more detail being displayed. This with the new lenses makes for amazing edge to edge clarity, which makes it feel like you're looking through a window, where you can use your eyes to look around rather than your head.
You should get a Quest Pro to test it using a company that has a very good no quibbles return policy to compare it. I think you will be surprised with it!
I have some through the lens videos on my channel using a 4090.
Now cranking the res up to 1.7x and using 500Mbps bit rate, this hides any compression and really makes the 4090 stretch it's legs removing some CPU bottleneck, giving you 90fps in DCS on high settings, and overall a very Sharpe detailed image up close and far away.

@@-Ola-. Better than G2? I don't know, but I'll believe this when I see it with my eyes. For now, what I can tell is that G2 vs. Pico 4 is a no match even on a rtx 3090. Uncompressed video from G2 is leaps and bounds better. So I don't really know what kind of miracle the 4090 can do on the Pico 4 streaming, since you continue to have an compressed, 150 mbit stream against an uncompressed video at higher resolution nonetheless. Also, I find the Pico 4 colors to be vastly inferior compared to that of the G2, and I have more than one issue with the lenses, like flares and weird peripheral distortion.

@@dirkthevrstroller yup it just doesnt sound right. But i’ve got a 4090, and G2 v2’s on the way, so i might try out a set of pico’s as well for comparison and return them if they arent up to expectations.

@@leruop got the G2’s, used it _alot_ for a month, and went back to triple 1440’s… Never tested the Pico, but a friend did, and said the G2’s where way better for him.
Picture quality in the G2’s where’nt good enough for my taste, and i found the VR to be a bit annoyng for daily use.
Maybe i would be more happy with Aero’s, who knows.

Since this uses steam and is stand alone, what if you download msfs and DCS and play it through steam straight from the headset? Can that be done?

What about an rtx 4070ti for the pico4? Is it suficient? Or maybe better an hp reverb g2 for this card? Thanks a lot!

Thanks for sharing! Question, I notice that there is "jitter" the entire video, I've experienced similar tracking movement with my trackir, are you experiencing that when wearing the headset or is it only noticeable in the playback video? And if you keep making these videos you're going to cost me a lot of $$$$$ lol (I'll have to upgrade from a ~4 year old gtx 1060 6gb rig to a 3090 or 4090, only running a 32" monitor now, haven't tried VR yet but I am seriously thinking about it now)

I think this video has come out pretty well considering I'm talking with a VR headset on, you will always get movement. Totally not noticeable in VR 👍 also, send my regards to your wallet 😜

If you were to turn reprojection off, what are the frame rate comparisons? I'm very tempted by the Pico, but I don't use reprojection - is the headset harder to run?

The thing here is how good it is at video compression, not just 3D performance. nVidia cards are known for excellent video codecs, AMD earlier gen cards - not so much... But maybe they improved in this generation. Super fast compression is the most important factor here, to provide a good stable high bitrate stream for the Pico 4 to decode.

I am quite happy with my new Pico 4, but when in MSFS, there is a delay in head movement tracking, it's okay when I turn my head, but not moving my head around, especially if I move back and forth. Did you have this issue?
