  • Here’s another single dosing mod for the Eureka Mignon series. This one is well known among the community and I personally find this version of the hopper to fit and look very good - matches the black Silenzio perfectly. The silicon bellows make a big difference. The hopper seals better than the one i’ve got previously, the silicon bellows create a better seal as well. The bellows include a tiny hole on top for a better airflow, the manufacturer thought of everything. The shipping was surprisingly fast (coming from the US to Europe), it only took little over a week or so with standard shipping.
    Let me know if you have any questions about the two hoppers and bellows i’ve tried so far.
    I am not affiliated, associated, endorsed by, or in any way officially connected with the manufacturer of this mod.
    I find that with my current temperature setting this particular coffee tastes really nice with the following recipe:
    Dose: 18 grams
    Brew time: 25 seconds
    Brew weight: ~35 grams
    Temperature : 93°C
    About the coffee :
    Roast: Light-Medium
    Origin: Ethiopia
    Region: Tega village, Bonga, Kibo, Kaffa
    Farm: Kewo (Tega and Tula)
    Varietal: 74165, 74110
    Growing altitude: 1830-1870 Meters
    Process: Natural
    Flavour profile: Tart, syrupy and super fruity

    Needs improvement, the outer wall on mine split after the second use and I had to glue a rubber O ring on the bottom to make up for the 1/4" gap where ground coffee would collect.

      Hi! I had to do some modifications to it as well. I used foam tape at the bottom of the throat and black PVC tape around the throat to create a perfect seal. Thanks for the comment!

    What grind setting are you using? Just got a notte and ordered the Etsy single dosing top as well…. Constantly get channeling no matter what grind setting i used - from 6- 0…. Just want to see if I’m in the ballpark/// (probably my basket, using the same open portofilter:::, ) but just curious what number you were using..
    Thanks

      Hi Nicholas, thank you for asking. I don't have the Silenzio anymore, but I never had to go past 2 on the dial. Every grinder is different, the dial setting will be different from grinder to grinder, but channeling doesn't necessarily mean your setting is bad. Also keep in mind that the burrs need breaking in before you can get the most of them. How's your brew pressure?

      Also… when you said you “don’t go past 2” ??? Did you mean past as in lower then 2? Or higher the. 2? Sorry for the newb question ( I’m assuming you mean lower then 2 = 1, 0…… but maybe you meant nothing coarser then 2…. Thanks

    • @Jaroslav.
      @Jaroslav.  2 года назад +1

      That’s a good start to figure out what you like and what to upgrade to one day. Rancilio Silvia is a pretty decent machine to get hands on as well. I meant that I never had to go higher than 2 on the dial, highest setting was probably ~1,8. It’s also good to not focus on numbers on the dial too much and find the actual zero point (turning the dial as far as to the point when the burrs make a light chirping sound). If you don’t have any issues with dialing in for a basic ratio (lets say 1:2 in 25s) and channeling is the only issue, try and find out what your brew pressure is. Then look into improving your puck prep - one variable at a time. Hope that helps!

      its not the grind setting, you need a wdt and you won't get channeling. I use a wdt plus his OCD leveler. I don't even tamp and I do not get any channeling. I am using the Notte and Bambino Plus as well for reference.

    • @Jaroslav.
      @Jaroslav.  3 года назад +2

      I got the first one for exactly the same reason. The fit wasn’t tight enough, therefore the seal wasn’t that great. Some fines would fly out from the top of the throat as I pushed the bellows, making a mess and that just didn’t work as nicely as it potentionally could if it sealed better. The colour wasn’t as black as i’d like. I really like how the mod i’m using currently seals the throat almost perfectly. Not only from around the sides, but it seals from the top as well - the square design has it’s advantages. Silicon bellows are also superior, they create a really good seal and feel durable. I did of course provide some feedback on the previous mod, perhaps you’ll receive a revised version. The seller was really professional and responsive. Does that answer your question well Jimmy?

      @Jaroslav.  2 года назад +6

      Hi Miguel, thank you and thanks for asking! I think the price difference is worth it and I would recommend going with the Niche if you don’t mind the looks of it. It doesn’t need bellows, it has a better set of burrs and is most likely a more enjoyable user experience. The single dosing mod with bellows is a nice idea, but I really dislike having to use bellows and the workflow is still quite messy and very inconsistent - the Mignon series simply isn’t meant for single dosing. Honestly, it completely put me off the whole single dosing thing. If you’re going to be single dosing, I suggest you get a single dosing grinder that is designed for single dosing. The bellows is not a solution. I hope that helps!

    Beautiful workflow, and has me inspired. Its just the video I needed to see and has me thinking. Whats the grind retention like with the bellows compared to without? What's the clumbing and distribution like using the dosing cup and flipping the portafilter? Thanks!

    • @Jaroslav.
      @Jaroslav.  2 года назад

      Hi Ross, thank you! The exchange across the Mignon line is quiet low, anywhere between 1-1.5g. Some people refer to it as “stale”, which makes it sound far worse than you’d be able to notice. If you’re pulling shots from the same bag(s) of coffee for longer than a few days, the exchange with both bellows and without is negligible. However if you’re changing coffee or brew method often, you’ll definitely want to get the bellows and push it out with each grind adjustment. Very handy for dialling in. I never grind directly into the portafilter, I feel like the coffee is less clumpy, less messy and more evenly distributed when grinding into the cup. Thanks for the comment Ross, I hope that helps!

      @@Jaroslav. I appreciate such a thoughtful response! Once dialed in I'll probably be sticking to the same coffee and brew method for couple weeks at a time, but I think I'll still go for the bellows for the sake of dialing in and just hoping to minimize retention as much as possible. • @Jaroslav.
      @Jaroslav.  2 года назад

      Hi Joel, there’s nothing to prevent popcorning in this mod. Popcorning was always an issue with the Silenzio and this mod. Thanks for asking!

    • @joelf5565
      @joelf5565 2 года назад

      Do you notice any issues with shot quality due to popcorning? Or are those few rebel beans possibly improperly grinded too insignificant? I ordered a Notte yesterday with single dosing in mind and learned about this mod to avoid retention. I have no desire to always be weighing after I grind. This will be my first setup as such. I have experience owning and operating a coffee shop, but there I used a doser on like a $3k grinder. No more coffee shop and I own a super automatic now for my home, but I miss the quality and art of using a real machine and portafilter.
      Final note. I would think though if you are pushing down on the bellow while grinding it might help keep the beans down to minimize some popcorning. The wind pressure could act similar to weight pressure. Just a thought. I guess I’ll see. Thanks for the video and cheers. Happy grinding.

    • @Jaroslav.
      @Jaroslav.  2 года назад +1

      To be completely honest, I started disliking the whole single dosing workflow using the bellows. It blows out fines, it’s inconsistent and what I’d put in would often not come completely out. Smashing the bellows to make coffee became really frustrating.
      But the good thing about Mignon grinders is that they don’t retain too much coffee in exchange, so you don’t really need bellows to single dose. The Silenzio I owned had around 2,5g exchange, so if you don’t mind purging 2-3g of coffee in the morning and then throwing in your dose, all the fresh coffee will come out on it’s own without making a mess.
      Pressing the bellows won’t prevent popcorning, the pressure is way too low to prevent a shooting bean. It will popcorn unless you cover the throat with something. Popcorning leads to inconsistencies, it really is an issue with this mod. Eureka on the other hand released a new, small single dosing hopper that helps with popcorning and I think it would be nicer to use.
      I’ve upgraded from the Silenzio some time ago, it’s a nice little grinder to figure out what kind of a workflow you’re into. I find it worked better if used as intended - as an on demand grinder.
      Thanks for asking and good luck with your new setup!

    • @joelf5565
      @joelf5565 2 года назад

      Hello again. I went with the Notte/Manuale. Got a good deal at only $248 usd. After using stock I did find quite a bit retention that I was not loving. Doing SD there sounded like a bit of popcorning as well since the stock hopper only a dome over the throat far from the blade, as is with virtually every non SD grinder I’ve seen. So I did find on Etsy a SD hopper, bellow, AND anti-popcorn weight thingy that fits perfectly in the throat real close to the blade. It is 3D custom made for this grinder by an Etsy seller, FusedLine. It actually works really good and I am happy with the work flow so far. Throw the measured beans in, when beans grind down to the throat I place the weight thingy in, and when grinding is done, 3-4 presses on the bellow and I find no retention. Popcorning also sounds much less than stock. Maybe a bean or two that gets hung up in the blade that eventually gets grinded.
      I did look into to the Eureka SD hopper you mentioned (45g hopper) but I could not find anyone selling it. I did find some websites, but everything was out of stock. It also didn’t look much different in design in regards to the popcorning. It is, however, round and has available it’s own bellow. But this weight thingy from Etsy is really cool. It fits into the throat and gets really close to the blade. It also has a few gaps around the edge so it can stay in while bellowing.

    • @joelf5565
      @joelf5565 2 года назад

      Also one other note. I learned it is best when using the bellow you don’t use it while grinding…only when grinding is complete. And you’ll see a bunch of ground coffee come out that would normally be left in the chute and burrs.
