Keep your livestock out of your ponds and plant pond grass and plants and make sure your banks have vegitation/ grass also. You can build gravel water ramps for livestock and fence off other areas of the pond. Cows love to wade in the summer heat. They're like 1500 lb bulldozers slowly pushing dirt into the bottom of your pond.

This is a very simple way to test the murkiness/turbidity of pond on my new property. Thank you for sharing this information

Great video. I've often wondered what causes "chocolate milk" water in lakes!

That was very interesting and informative. I'm going to have to see what else you have videos about.
Our pond has always been kind of muddy-ish. You can't hardly see the fish. Always wondered why and never really knew.
It was very dry last year and the water got very low, then around November we got a BIG rain that brought it right back up to normal. I rather expected the rainfall and subsequent runoff that refilled it to muddy it up more than usual but got the exact opposite.
It was left VERY clear and was a real treat to actually SEE the fish darting at my lures. Never had that there before. But I liked it and would prefer if it would stay that way.

Did you fix the issue? We have the same issue here in Texas.

@@PaulaAlves -- No. I didn't do anything. I just kind of sat in the house and stayed away from the world and said, "Gosh, I would have fixed that by now if not for that darned virus!"

Does it matter when the sample is taken? For example, if we have gotten a lot of rain fall should i wait a little while until we have a stretch of time without rain? We have a pond like this on the land we bought 4 years ago and i know there is a alot of snapping turtles and little channel catfish that im sure is not helping...

Our pond is clay ground. Very reddish. The goldfish survived the first winter and are good. We also have catfish, bass and some other fish. Can my pond ever be clear?

Both my ponds are clay and they have a beautiful tea stained appearance because I don't spray or kill my pond weeds/ grasses. If you're pond is set up for bank fishing then you'll have turbid water. My ponds are surrounded by good shore grass and pond Lilly's, pond reeds. I fish from a small boat. All that vegetation provides food and cover. The plus is anyone who trespasses to fish are out of luck with no boat.

If your HOA kills the Eel grass via spraying, what would you do to clear the water up? Im assuming there is an overabundance of organic Phosphorus

I have a similar question to Doug Allen's, does gypsum taken from discarded sheetrock have any potential to harm cattle or wildlife if added to a pond? I have a significant amount from a new home build I plan on crushing and adding.

    • @txprolake
      @txprolake  4 года назад

I wouldn’t use actual sheet rock unless it’s a very small pond

I have a large pond and it always has that dirty water look, it's been here for at least 10 years and it has cleared a few times but never stays that way, is there any way to connect with you and come up with a plan? I would love to get your input and give more information on my setup. Great video and I am going to try your suggestions how would you dose a 2 to 3 million gallon pond

Thanks Steven - great video. I tried your experiment with our 70 acre lake and the alum dosed sample was clear in just two days. I assume an alum treatment will be the way to go for clearing up our lake. Can you elaborate on what is actually going on chemically - I have a precipitate at the bottom of the jug. Is this some form of an aluminum sulfate compound?

I see this comment is from 3 years ago I did this experiment and the alm cleared it up the best what chemicals did you buy to put in your pond is my next question

My clay bottom pond with no liner is fed by a few downspouts, plus a french drain. When it's raining you can see the muddy water cloud entering the pond from the french drain so I have a mechanical problem with runoff into the pond. So the pond is always muddy looking with very low visibility. KOI fish are fine but you can't see them except when they come up for food. There is no algae. What's the best way to clear up the muddy cloud water? Add gypsum? Alum? Or should I add a waterfall filter?
